This week we explore the incredible career of the brilliant and prolific British character actor Percy Herbert. Chances are if you've seen some of the all-time classic war movies of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s then you'll recognise Percy Herbert. We are thrilled to be joined by his daughter Katrina Wood, Katrina shares some incredible stories about her father and the many films he worked on. With over 90 film and TV appearances he became one of Britain’s most recognisable supporting actors with roles in Cockleshell Heroes, A Hill In Korea, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Sea of Sand, Tunes of Glory Guns at Batasi, Tobruk and The Wild Geese.

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of hosting a discussion at We Have Ways Festival 2024 about the making of the classic war film A Bridge Too Far with the fantastic Sebastian Abineri. Seb was a member of Attenborough's Private Army (APA) the film's specialist supporting cast. Seb regaled us with stories from the making of the film and answered some audience questions. We turn to the archives of the SSVC this week as we talk about 3 of our favorite British Army training films and Documentaries from the 'Services Sound and Vision Corporation' who produced thousands of these films for the armed forces from the early 80s into the 90s. We talk through 'Operation Biting', 'Fighting Patrol', and 'SBS Oil Safe'. 

Later in the episode, we read out replies from one of our hypothetical questions from the listeners which leads to Trevor Howard leaving us in hysterics!

We hit the beaches and make a dash for the sea wall this week as we talk Normandy on Film with Paul Woodadge of WW2TV. Paul is a historian and battlefield guide who lives and works in Normandy and is the perfect guest for this run through some cinematic depictions of D-Day on screen. We cover early attempts such as 1956's Screaming Eagles right through to 1998's Saving Private Ryan.

On this weeks episode we look back at Samuel Fuller's 'Merrill's Marauders' which shows the often gruelling conditions that the men of the 5307th Composite Unit went though in the Jungles of Burma in World War Two.

We are joined by historian Gavin Mortimer who has extensively researched the Marauders and was even able to speak to veterans of the unit and shared with us how they felt about the film. Does this film do the men justice or does it fall short? Listen to find out!

We we're thrilled to be invited back to We Have Ways of Making You Talk's festival to put on our FoF War Movie Quiz. It was great to see old friends and new faces and speak to lots of FoF listeners.

The festival had some amazing speakers and some exceptionally cool kit on display - everything from a Matilda I to an early M3 Lee tank which had been used as a range target! In this episode we not only recap some of our favourite parts of the weekend but also hear from historians and some FoF listeners as we asked everyone: Who is your favourite war movie character? We had some great answers!
