I think you'll hear in this conversation some helpful insight that Rebecca and 25 other young adults' stories yielded. I think you'll also find hope!

Loving and Learning Through Heroin Addiction28 Jan 202000:33:03

God is present always, everywhere. And Jesus loves us always, everywhere. No matter what our choices are. And sometimes, we are making poor choices and still loving Jesus. We need to embrace that tension. In this episode Beth and Kate James talk about living in that tension with her son, a heroin addict. Are you living with an unknown in your life? You'll be encouraged by Kate's story.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Who have you been surprisingly drawn to love?
  2. Addiction is not choosy. Has addiction hit your loved ones? How did it affect your pride and humility?
  3. “If you do this, then this will happen. It’s not that simple.” How does this make you feel?
  4. Are you trusting God with an unknown? Are you waking up daily, trusting again?
  5. Humility is necessary to love others and trust Christ. What do you think about that in your own life?

Becoming Honest with Ourselves21 Jan 202000:33:26

Heather Caliri shares insight from personal experience and now in her mini-course about managing anxiety. "It starts with being honest with ourselves. This leads to discernment in knowing what our body is feeling and needing. We become less alienated from ourselves." Join Beth Bruno and Heather in a discussion about becoming more whole.

Reflection Questions:

1. If you’re a mom, do you feel like you’re involved in meaningful work? What is that? Do your kids see you doing it?

2. What do you make of Heather’s comment to her girls: “You don’t have to sacrifice your selfhood and giftedness to care for other people.”

3. Heather says that sometimes lovely isn’t soft and pretty, but ugly and raw. Do you relate?

4. Regardless of what you struggle with, how can you begin to name it for what it is?

5. What are simple things you can insert into your life that are life-giving? They don’t have to be complicated, christian-y, or expensive. Heather mentions yoga, coloring, puzzles, music, etc.

Discovering and Embracing an Ethnic Identity14 Jan 202000:34:39

While Sandhya's story is unique, we all have an "origin" story. Where have you come from? Jump in to Beth's conversation with a new friend to gain ideas of how to share these sorts of stories with the women in your life. Questions below to help.

Reflection Questions:

1. What about your story? Are there parts you can have a righteous anger toward?

2. What words would you choose to mark your body with significance?

3. Did  you have experiences as a child that no-one ever entered into with you?

4. Sandhya describes The Lenses Institute and Biblical Oneness as working toward oneness, not sameness. What are your thoughts around that? Does your table include others that are different from you?

Cultivating Compassionate Attention for Ourselves07 Jan 202000:33:44

Beth Bruno and Aundi Kolber discuss how to cultivate compassionate attention for ourselves. Aundi weaves her work as a therapist with her personal journey in her new book, Try Softer. An accessible, "regular person" counseling book, Try Softer is a kind guide to help you better understand and care for yourself. Listen in and follow the discussion guide to consider how this conversation might impact your story.

Podcast Discussion Guide:

1. What do you think of Aundi's description of her own fierce and lovely? "Fierceness is the willingness to protect the lovely. Setting boundaries is a fierce love for oneself."

2. Aundi talks about our window of tolerance. Do you have a sense of what your window of tolerance is?  She says: "We can get stuck in looking for things to help the pain. From the outside, this may look like indulgence. From a trauma-informed perspective, it's not fully addressing what is going on. It's not what we actually need."

3. Aundi says a Try Softer approach begins with becoming aware of our bodies. Where do you notice responses in your body? Compassionate attention starts with curiosity. "What might I need right now to be more gentle with myself?" Ask yourself this the next time you notice you're reacting to something.

4. What do you think your attachment style might be?

5. Have you been in "systems" as an adult that chipped away at your secure attachment with oneself?
