Jim (Father) and Zach (Son) talk about their ideas and perspectives on fantasy fiction, starting with Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series but straying in various other directions as well. The generational difference in how they view what they read will become obvious (and entertaining, they hope!). Come enjoy our debates and explorations over what all these books mean, and see who you agree with.

Magic Burns Review: A Massive Upgrade for Kate Daniels
mercredi 19 août 2026 • Durée 20:34
🔥 BOOK 2 DELIVERS! 🔥
Jim is continuing his journey through the Kate Daniels series with Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews—and this second installment takes a noticeable step up from Magic Bites!
Magic and technology are constantly battling for dominance in this post-apocalyptic version of Atlanta, but now a massive magical flare is approaching. That means stronger magic, increasingly dangerous supernatural threats, ancient mysteries…and, naturally, Kate Daniels finding herself directly in the middle of ALL of it.
In this spoiler-lite review, Jim breaks down:
⚔️ Why Magic Burns improves on the first book
🔥 The fantastic magic-vs.-technology worldbuilding
🦁 Kate and Curran's increasingly entertaining relationship
🔍 The mysteries surrounding Kate—and why their slow reveal is working
✨ How the magical flare expands the possibilities of this world
🏃 Why the pacing works so much better this time around
📚 And whether Jim is officially committed to finishing all TEN Kate Daniels novels!
As a longtime fan of The Dresden Files, Jim is finding plenty to enjoy in Ilona Andrews' distinctive take on urban fantasy. Two books in, the big question is becoming less “Will I continue?” and more “Just how good is this series going to get?”
Have you read Magic Burns? Did you think it was an improvement over Magic Bites? And without spoilers for later books, where does it rank among your favorite Kate Daniels novels? Let us know in the comments!

Old Man’s War Book 7: Brilliant Comeback or Cash Grab?
lundi 17 août 2026 • Durée 17:55
John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War series was finished.
Or so we thought.
Ten years after The End of All Things, Scalzi unexpectedly returned to the universe with The Shattering Peace, the seventh Old Man’s War novel. But after a decade away, could he recapture what made the series work? Did he actually have something new to say—or was this simply one trip back to the well too many?
In this spoiler-lite review, Jim dives into The Shattering Peace and explores:
🚀 How the book builds on the first six Old Man’s War novels
👽 What we finally learn about the mysterious Consu
⭐ How former supporting characters step into major roles
🌌 The fresh ideas Scalzi brings to this familiar universe
😂 Scalzi’s trademark characters, humor, and rapid-fire dialogue
⚠️ Three reasons this book might NOT work for you
📚 And whether The Shattering Peace should truly be the END of Old Man’s War
Jim enjoyed returning to this universe—but sometimes a great comeback also provides the perfect opportunity to say goodbye.
Did Scalzi pull it off?
Watch the review and then let us know: What did YOU think of The Shattering Peace? And do you want an eighth Old Man’s War novel, or should Scalzi leave the series here?

The Brutal Truth About The Wolf Den: Should You Read It?
dimanche 16 août 2026 • Durée 24:04
What happens when historical fiction takes you into one of the darkest corners of ancient Pompeii—and refuses to look away?
In this spoiler-lite Fantasy for the Ages review, Zach takes the lead on Elodie Harper’s The Wolf Den, the first book in her acclaimed trilogy about women struggling to survive, endure, and reclaim some measure of control over their lives in ancient Rome.
Our central character, Amara, is an educated young woman who has been sold into slavery and forced to work in a Pompeian brothel. Her circumstances are brutal—but Amara is intelligent, ambitious, resourceful, and determined that the Wolf Den will NOT define the rest of her life.
Zach breaks down what makes this novel such a compelling read, while Jim faces an entirely different question: Can Zach actually convince him to add it to his already mountainous TBR?
We discuss:
🏛️ Elodie Harper’s immersive recreation of ancient Pompeii
🐺 Amara and the women of the Wolf Den
💔 The novel’s difficult and sometimes brutal subject matter
🤝 Friendship, survival, ambition, and resilience
⚖️ Power, slavery, class, and the struggle for agency
📚 Why Zach recommends the book
👍 Who might LOVE The Wolf Den
👎 Who should probably stay away
🤔 And whether Zach can convince Jim that this historical novel belongs on his TBR!
The Wolf Den isn’t exactly the kind of book Jim normally reaches for—but Zach makes a surprisingly compelling case. Does he actually succeed?
House of the Dragon Season 3: The Rise and Fall of Rhaenyra?
samedi 15 août 2026 • Durée 56:28
🔥 The Dance of the Dragons is officially a BLOODBATH.
House of the Dragon Season 3 has come to an end, and Jim is joined by Derek from D&J’s Epic Quest to break down the entire season—with FULL SPOILERS and absolutely no protection from dragonfire.
Did Season 3 finally deliver the war we’ve been waiting for? Did it improve on Season 2? Who emerged as the season’s MVP? And at this point, is there actually anyone in Westeros we should WANT sitting on the Iron Throne?
🐉 In this episode, we dig into:
• Rhaenyra’s increasingly dangerous belief in her own destiny
• Daemon finally getting back to doing Daemon things
• Aegon and Aemond—and which brother had the stronger season
• Jace and Helaena’s devastating storylines
• Alicent’s place in the war she helped create
• The Battle of the Gullet and Tumbleton
• Ulf, Hugh, the dragonseeds, and the wisdom—or insanity—of handing random people dragons
• The best performances and biggest surprises of Season 3
• Team Black vs. Team Green: is EITHER side still worth rooting for?
• How Season 3 compares with the first two seasons
• Our hopes—and fears—for the final season
⚠️ SPOILER WARNING: We discuss the entirety of House of the Dragon Season 3. Finish the season before watching!
Then join the conversation in the comments: What did YOU think of Season 3? Who was your MVP? Team Black, Team Green...or Team Everybody-Here-Is-Terrible? And what score would you give the season out of 10?
The Mummy 2026 Is Good Horror… But a BAD Mummy Movie
vendredi 14 août 2026 • Durée 22:31
Lee Cronin has dug up The Mummy for a whole new generation—and this is DEFINITELY not the mummy movie you remember! 😱
In this spoiler-lite review, Jim takes a look at Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (2026), the dark, twisted new reimagining from Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. With the director of Evil Dead Rise behind the camera, you can probably guess this isn't exactly Brendan Fraser battling Imhotep while delivering one-liners.
We’re talking:
⚰️ How this version completely reinvents Mummy mythology
😱 The seriously disturbing horror Cronin brings to the story
🎭 Strong performances and surprisingly deep worldbuilding
🩸 Some spectacular—and VERY nasty—effects
🏺 How it compares to previous Mummy movies
🤔 Why Jim thinks this is good horror… but a bad Mummy movie
😬 And an ending that requires a LOT of suspension of disbelief
Jim has loved the classic Universal Monsters for decades, enjoyed the Brendan Fraser Mummy trilogy, survived the attempted Dark Universe reboot, and appreciated Cronin's Evil Dead Rise. So where does this bizarre new interpretation fit?
Is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy a bold reinvention—or did it stray too far from what makes The Mummy… The Mummy?

In fact, it isn’t even on his mountainous TBR! So Zach has a challenge: explain what makes this award-winning novel so beloved—and determine whether there’s any chance of convincing his dad to add yet another book to the pile.We discuss:🏛️ Madeline Miller’s reimagining of Greek mythology⚔️ Achilles, Patroclus, and the road toward the Trojan War❤️ The novel’s central romance and character relationships📚 Miller’s prose, storytelling, and use of the original mythology😭 Why this book has such a powerful emotional reputation👍 Reasons you might LOVE The Song of Achilles👎 Reasons this might not be the book for you🤔 And the big question: Can Zach convince Jim to read it?This episode also highlights something we want to lean into more on Fantasy for the Ages: Jim and Zach love a lot of the same fiction—but we definitely don’t love ALL the same things. Did John Scalzi Actually Stick the Landing? | The End of All Things Review
mardi 11 août 2026 • Durée 19:51
The end of a series comes with PRESSURE. After six books of soldiers, aliens, interstellar politics, conspiracies, and John Scalzi’s trademark sarcasm, could The End of All Things actually stick the landing for the original Old Man’s War story arc?
In this spoiler-lite Fantasy for the Ages review, Jim dives into the sixth Old Man’s War novel and looks at how well Scalzi brings together the pieces established throughout the series—especially those set up in The Human Division. We’ll talk characters, pacing, humor, the interconnected novella structure, the resolution of the massive conflict, and whether the finale delivers a satisfying payoff.
And yes, we know: “The End” wasn’t REALLY the end! Ten years later, Scalzi returned to the Old Man’s War universe with The Shattering Peace in 2025. Fortunately for Jim, waiting this long to read the series means there’s no decade-long wait required. That review is coming soon!
🚀 In this review:
• Spoiler-lite summary of The End of All Things
• Six reasons you might love it
• Three reasons it might not work for you
• How it builds on The Human Division
• Whether Scalzi successfully wraps up a story this big
• Jim’s thoughts on finally completing the original Old Man’s War arc
• Why some Old Man’s War fans seem to prefer “early Scalzi”
Have you finished The End of All Things? Did Scalzi stick the landing? And where does it rank among the original six Old Man’s War books? Let us know in the comments—but please keep things spoiler-lite for readers who haven’t finished the series!

The Best of Kurt Russell: Ranking His Genre Masterpieces & Messes
lundi 10 août 2026 • Durée 31:39
Kurt Russell has been a staple of science fiction, fantasy, and horror for DECADES—and somehow, whether the movie is a masterpiece or a mess, Kurt Russell is almost always great. But which of his genre movies is the BEST? And how many have you actually seen?
In this Fantasy for the Ages Jim solo episode, I’m ranking EVERY Kurt Russell SFF & horror movie from worst to best! Along the way, I’m also giving Kurt a separate letter grade for his individual performance—because sometimes Kurt Russell is MUCH better than the movie he’s in.
We’re talking iconic roles and cult favorites from across his incredible career, including:
🎬 The Thing
🐍 Escape from New York
👽 Stargate
🚛 Big Trouble in Little China
🩸 Bone Tomahawk
🚗 Death Proof
🪖 Soldier
🌎 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
🦊 The Fox and the Hound
🎅 The Christmas Chronicles
🦸 Sky High…and more!
Then, after ranking the movies themselves, I flip the question around: What happens if we ignore the quality of the MOVIE and rank Kurt Russell’s performances instead?
That gives us a very different Top 10!
Finally, I reveal my own three FAVORITE Kurt Russell genre movies—and critical consensus gets absolutely NO vote in that one.
How many of these have YOU seen? What’s your favorite Kurt Russell SFF or horror movie? And what is his single greatest genre performance: MacReady? Snake Plissken? Jack Burton? Todd? Stuntman Mike? Somebody else?
John Gwynne's Of Blood and Bone: Worth the Hype? | Zach's Review
dimanche 9 août 2026 • Durée 19:41
John Gwynne knows how to go BIG—and his Of Blood and Bone Trilogy takes readers back to the Banished Lands for another sprawling adventure packed with warriors, monsters, massive battles, ancient powers, and plenty of bloodshed!
In this spoiler-lite Fantasy for the Ages review, Zach makes the case for why epic fantasy fans should read A Time of Dread, A Time of Blood, and A Time of Courage. What does this trilogy do especially well? How does it build on the world Gwynne created in The Faithful and the Fallen? And are there reasons some fantasy readers might want to skip it?
Jim hasn't read Of Blood and Bone yet—but he HAS read and enjoyed all four books of The Faithful and the Fallen. So the big question is: Will Zach's review convince him that this trilogy needs to move up his mountainous TBR?
Join us as we discuss:
⚔️ John Gwynne's return to the Banished Lands
📚 All three books of the Of Blood and Bone Trilogy
🔥 Characters, battles, worldbuilding, pacing, and epic scale
🩸 Why Zach thinks the trilogy works
🤔 Who will love these books—and who might not
📖 Whether Jim needs to get reading!
