Supreme Mystic28 May 202501:00:59

In this episode, I’m talking with Chino and Jeff from Supreme Mystic. This band blurs the lines of heavy music with a unique blend of hardcore and grunge that seeks to uplift as well as entertain. It was awesome to talk with these guys about their impressive paths through music which ultimately led to the formation of the band. As you would expect, we also talked about origin stories, first concerts, and pizza toppings. Supreme Mystic just finished up their debut album called Kala Rupa which should be out by the end of summer, if not sooner. Keep your eyes on their socials for updates.

You can catch Supreme Mystic live on June 6th at the Outer Limits in Detroit. They will also be at the Upstage Music Fest in Clearfield, PA on August 9th.

Salvation‘s End15 Dec 202100:53:02

We checked in with Brandon, Tim, Dave, Sean, and TJ of Salvation’s End. Joining us were fans Krystal and Tony. Salvation’s End recently released the new single called “Monarch” off their upcoming album. Tim (vocals) contacted me to share the new music. I was blown away and ecstatic to have Salvation’s End on the show. They play highly aggressive yet melodic metal that I absolutely love. If you imagine a love child forged from Nevermore, Judas Priest, and Exmortis, you’ll have an idea of the blazing metal glory that is Salvation’s End.

We talked about how Salvation’s End came together and their work on the new album. Along the way we touched on our favorite topics including first concerts, musical influences, first records and of course pizza toppings.

Sit back, grab your favorite beverage and check out this conversation with Salvation’s End and their fans.

The Lucid Furs01 Dec 202100:56:36

We brought back one of our favorite bands for season 2, The Lucid Furs. We caught up with Karen, Gordie, Nick, and Dan on the road supporting their new album Damn! That Was Easy available on Argonauta Records. This new album retains the band’s signature psychedelic hard rock with a touch of the blues. However, they take this a step further with a couple of tunes dipping into the funk zone. Overall it makes for a very enjoyable record that is delicious and addictive.

During our chat we learned what the Lucid Furs enjoy most while on the road, the recording process for Damn! That Was Easy, and other assorted odds and sods. Since we know their pizza preference, we switched things up with dreaded question number 2, nuts or no nuts in brownies.

Sit back, grab your favorite beverage and dig into this chat with The Lucid Furs.

Nagazi17 Nov 202100:57:38

A chat with Joe, Nakkim, and Andy from Nagazi along with fans Erica, Dustin, and Mary. Nagazi are on the cusp of releasing their latest EP called March of the Serpents which is out on December 3rd. The new album is the next level of heaviness from a band that has already made their mark by creating bashing riffs with tons of groove.

We started off talking about the name of the band. A quick lookup on Google and Wikipedia shows that Nagazi is the name given by Georgian people (as in near Russia) for their shepherd dogs. Apparently a friend of the band suggested the name. Once the right line-up was established, the band used the name. Nagazi captures the intensity of the band and their music very well.

We also spent some time talking about the recording of March of the Serpents and new band members (Nakkim - bass, Andy - guitars). The new album was recorded with Scott Bush (Cinder) in his studio in Tennessee. Evidently Scott has some great stories about David Lee Roth. Sounds like we need to get Cinder on the show.

We continued to talk about some of our favorite topics such as first albums and first concerts. As usual, we wrapped up with the dreaded debate regarding pizza and pineapple.

Drink Their Blood20 Oct 202101:04:33

A chat with  Ben, Jeff, Andrew, and Todd from Drink Their Blood along with fans Brandon, Hannah, Bonnie, and Jacob. Drink Their Blood is very hard to quantify. They mix death metal, progressive metal, and jazz into a very intriguing mixture all their own. Their shows are a blast of sonic energy guaranteed to captivate.

Our chat delved into how the band got started and introductions of new members Todd (guitar) and Andrew (drums). The new lineup builds off an excellent foundation. Now that shows are back, Drink Their Blood off and running. There is also talk of recording new music in the not too distant future.

We had a blast talking about the music everyone is getting into these days, first albums, and pre-show rituals. As usual, we wrapped up with the dreaded debate regarding pizza and pineapple.

Electric Huldra22 Sep 202101:14:58

A chat with Bobby, Dominic, and Troy from Electric Huldra along with fans Adam, Johnny, Anthony, Nick, and Audrey. As well as a brief hello from the guys in Slumlord Radio. Electric Huldra are a hard hitting rock band that channels a bit of the 70’s and stoner rock vibes while making the genre their own. I first heard them at Fuzz Fest where I became an instant fan.

Our chat delved into how the band got started and in particular how Troy started playing the bass through his guitar. The band is working on new music with Adam Wilkinson handling the mix. They plan to release the new music on cassette as well as digitally.

We talked a bit about the thriving local rock music scene and some of the awesome people within that scene. While the scene that Gene Simmons may have known with mega rock bands is gone, there is still plenty of great music. Our conversation wandered into influences, first albums and concerts. As usual, we wrapped up with the dreaded debate regarding pizza and pineapple.

EPCYA01 Sep 202100:47:58

A chat with Aaron, Julio, Jonathan, and Dustin from Epcya along with Tom from Slumlord Radio. Epcya hails from Grand Rapids. Their music touches on many genres including ska, punk, funk, progressive, and metal. It is an eclectic mix and we talked on where that mix originates. Epcya also blends lyrics in Spanish and English. We chatted about what influences a particular song to be in Spanish or English.

Our conversation with Epcya touched on a few songs from their album Metamorphosis. In particular the song “Hongos / Super A”. The story behind this one is fantastic. As usual, we wrapped up with the dreaded debate about pizza and pineapple.

Cavalcade18 Aug 202101:25:51

A chat with Cale, Brad, and Sean from Cavalcade along with fans Jacob, Ben, and Chuck. Cavalcade is one of the unique heavy bands that I’ve had the pleasure of listening to and seeing live. Their sound embraces some many wonderful aspects of the term “heavy”. We talked a bit about how Cavalcade came up with their sound. This led to a bit of quantum entanglement as myself and Sean crossed paths a few times in our earlier lives in the Michigan Metal scene.

Our chat with Cavalcade also took a turn into musical gadgets employed by bassist Craig Horkey. Finally, we hit upon favorite subjects such as first albums and concerts. As usual, we wrapped up with the dreaded debate about pizza and pineapple.

Distilled Tongues21 Jul 202101:07:00

A chat with Sean, Mike, and Jeremy of Distilled Tongues as well as fans Zac and Chris. Their new debut EP is a fantastic barrage of powerful rock riffs. Our chat included the story of how Sean and Mike transitioned from a folk band into the super groove rock that they play today. Mike was stretching his wings from the tremendous thrash riffs of his other band Pick Axe Preacher. Jeremy (who also plays in Cosmic Sands) saw that Sean and Mike were looking for a drummer and it was a done deal.

Our talk with Distilled Tongues also included a bit about the recording process which was completely do it yourself. A testament to the band’s skill in self-producing from their home studio. We wrapped up with our favorite topics of first albums, concerts, and the crucial question of pineapple on pizza.

In this episode, I’m talking with Patrick and Jeff from Solar Monolith. It took me way too long, but I finally got a chance to talk with these awesome people about their heavy hitting music. We talked about how the band came to be and the creation of their excellent new album The Crooked Path. In addition to chatting about song writing and musical influences, we talked about one of my favorite subjects: pizza.

Don’t miss your chance to experience Solar Monolith live on May 10 at Doom and Bloom, May 22 at the Sanctuary in Hamtrack and June 6 at the Corktown Tavern,

Dead In 524 Mar 202101:07:21

A chat with Dana, James, Brent, Dave, and Rob from the band Dead In 5 and their fans Graham, Ed, Paige, Petra, Gryffen, Joe, Andy, BJ, and Missy. We talk about how Dead In 5 came up with their name and how the ethos of living every day to the fullest is broadcast loud and clear through their music. Having recently won best rock band in the Detroit Music Awards, we chat about what that means for the band.

Our conversation checks in with how the Dead In 5 have been coping with the pandemic. With the focus off of shows, they have been doubling down on writing and recording new music. Questions about songwriting, hair styles, and first records were asked and answered. We even heard about encounters with Don Knot’s nephew and Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Finally, we wrapped up with a bit of controversy and the dreaded pineapple on pizza question.

Grab a beverage and enjoy a fantastic talk with Dead In 5 and their fans. See the links for more fun.

I had a fantastic time talking with Jake about the Moon Orchids new self-titled album. Jake reveals the story behind the band, his approach to songwriting, and how the band got their name. Mazinga02 Apr 202501:07:18

In this episode, I’m talking with Chris “Box”, Tony, and Marc from Mazinga. I’ve been a huge fan of Mazinga since seeing them for the first time back in 2009. It was outstanding to finally talk with them and learn about the origins of the band as well as chat about their new epic album called Chinese Democracy Manifest - Greatest Hits Vol. 2. The story behind the album name and some of the tunes on this album are pure gold. As usual, we talked about music origins for each band member, our mutual love of Black Sabbath, and pizza.

You can catch Mazinga live at Tip Top Deluxe in Grand Rapids on April 11, and over at the Sanctuary in Hamtramck on April 12th.

We talked about how Trey made his way into the band and the work they have been doing together to write and record new music. During our chat, Ira Briggs from the Deck in Muskegeon stopped by as he is working with Slumlord Radio on the new record. In this episode, I’m talking with Brandon, Rich, and Joey from Cullossus. This was such an easy and awesome conversation - I could have talked with these guys for hours. In addition to talking about the origins of Cullossus and their super heavy music, it was a lot of fun talking about great shows they have seen, our shared love for Black Sabbath, and guitars. During our chat we also got into how each of them got into music and of course pizza. Check out their bandcamp page for music and be on the lookout for new music coming soon. Absentees19 Feb 202501:03:02

In this episode, I’m talking with Tony, John, Matt and Jarret from Absentees. I had a blast talking with these guys about their journey into crafting their own brand of heavy hitting punk rock. We chatted about their latest EP called All the Hertz: Volume 1 which was recorded and produced by Jon-Mikal of the Idiot Kids (who are Fans With Bands alumni). Our conversation included favorite tunes on the new EP, the recording process with Jon-Mikal, songwriting, wrestling, and pizza. There is no rest for the Absentees as they are working on new music and hope to release vinyl this year on Jett Plastic Recordings. In between songwriting and recording, Absentees will be doing more shows throughout the year.

In this episode, I’m talking with Jacob from The American Hotel System. Having seen them at the Sounds Like Michigan fundraiser for the Michigan Music Alliance, I immediately wanted to chat with them about their music. Their alt-rock music features great hooks and extremely thoughtful lyrics. You can experience their evocative songwriting on their recent EP called Can You Hear It? I had a great time talking with Jacob about his path in music, how the band came to be, songwriting, and more. The American Hotel System is planning a busy spring and summer of shows. Recorruptor22 Jan 202501:02:12

Tales from the Crypt!

I had to reschedule my guest who was supposed to be on this week for Fans With Bands, which left a hole in the normal release schedule. However, this is a bit of a blessing in disguise! You see, when moving the podcast to Substack, there is an undocumented limit of 100 episodes that can be imported. Fans With Bands had 121 episodes, so 21 episodes from the first season are not here on Substack.

So, to fill the void, you get to listen to the very first episode featuring Lansing’s death metal band Recorruptor. I apologize in advance for the poor audio quality. In the early days of ZOOMing, well, sometimes, folks ’ cell or internet signals were not the greatest. Beyond that, this is a time capsule as this episode was originally on Oct 26, 2020.

I hope you enjoy this dip into the archives. I’ll be working to sprinkle in the missing 21 early episodes over time so we have a full record of Fans With Bands here.

Recorruptor Show Notes

A chat with Clint, the vocalist for the Lansing, Michigan extreme metal band Recorruptor, and Nick, a fan of the band. In this episode, we talk about Nick's first experience with the band at Mac's (a classic dive bar in Lansing) and picking up Recorruptor's "Some S**t" demo. This launched Nick into following Recorruptor through their "Bloodmoon" and recently released "Funeral Corridor" albums.

We also delved into the gateway bands of Slayer and Lamb Of God that pulled Nick and Clint into more extreme forms of metal. A big shout out to the godfather of the double kick drum, Dave Lombardo! Nick was curious as to the drinking routine for load in, and we got into Clint's 21st with GoatwhoreBlack Fast, and Acid Bath. Hilarity then ensues :)

Our talk gets a bit cerebral when we discuss the calming and cathartic aspects of metal music. While some may find the blistering chaos of Black Dahlia Murder beyond the pale. Extreme metal fans find the blasting power releases the tension from the day and leads to a blissful zen.

All Over The Shop17 Sep 202500:54:02

In this episode, I talk with Todd and Brandon of All Over The Shop. We talk about the dreaded question: what does your band sound like? I of course had my own thoughts, but it is always interesting to get the band’s perspective. Our conversation also included working with Geoff Michael at Big Sky in Ann Arbor to record their most recent EP - Every Ounce Of Energy. Along the way we talk about songwriting, influences, first concerts and of course, pizza toppings.

In this episode, we talk with Jon Torrence. I had a fantastic time talking with Jon about his journey into music, his songwriting, and experience as a teacher. Kay Harper13 Nov 202400:48:44

In this episode, I’m talking with Kay Harper. She is a brilliant and inspiring country artist whose recent single “Freight Train” is a streaming hit. In large part this is due to Kay’s authentic voice and storytelling. I had a great time chatting with Kay about her origins, her songwriting, and plans for the future which include a return to Nashville to record more of her music. If you are in the Ann Arbor area, Kay will be performing at Revel Run in Chelsea on November 15th, 2024. Don’t miss catching this rising star.

One With The Riverbed30 Oct 202400:58:11

Welcome to season 5!! In this episode, we talk with Jared, Jimmy, and Brian from One With The Riverbed. I absolutely fell in love with this band the first time I caught them live at Jeff Fest in Kalamazoo. Dark, atmospheric, and blackened metal music that is brutally beautiful. It checks all the boxes on the What Does Chuck Dig About Metal Music list. It was a pleasure talking with them about how the band came to be, songwriting, influences and more. One With The Riverbed recently released their new album Succumb on Dusktone Records. It surely is one of the best albums of the year.

Head Full Of Ghosts02 Oct 202401:02:41

In this episode, we talk with James and Brian from Head Full Of Ghosts. It was great to talk with them about their band, their latest album called 10.23, their influences, and more. This band puts a new spin on the 90’s rock and grunge stylings. In some ways I felt like I was listening to new Filter, Seven Mary Three, or Our Lady Peace when listening to Head Full Of Ghosts. In this episode, we catch up with Stu and Sean from Pulphonics. Since our first conversation in season 3, Pulphonics have found the freedom to explore their musical ideas. This has led to the creation of their new album Sonic Umami Vol 1. On this record, they are spreading their wings and challenging themselves while creating extremely compelling new music. During our conversation we talked about the changes in songwriting and the new direction their music has taken. Since we’d already talked about pizza toppings, we learned what they enjoy for breakfast 🙂

Mike Walker of Bogue03 Sep 202500:55:15

In this episode, I talk with Mike Walker of Bogue. Mike shares the story of Bogue who were at the center of Detroit’s garage rock scene in the 2000s. They soon recorded a demo with Jim Diamond in Detroit. Sadly tragedy struck when guitarist Dan Maister committed suicide. A couple of years later, drummer Matt Blake passed away due to a heart attack. Thankfully, Mike Walker persevered and has recently released Bogue’s demo on vinyl. Mike shares the origin story of Bogue as well as the story of releasing their demo after over 20 years. It is a great talk and I very much appreciate Mike sharing it with you and me. Get over to the Bogue bandcamp page to get your copy of their icon album, How'd You Feel About Talkin' to Me. It is a fabulous record.

In this episode, we talk with Ian, Elijah, Tegan, and Mer from Headless Mary. I had a fantastic chat with the band about how they got started (including the story on their name) as well as chatting about their last album called Death Is A Moving Target. If you love music that touches that vibe of bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Hum, then Headless Mary is for you. We talked about songwriting, influences, music we are listening to, and our mutual infatuation with Radiohead. Along the way, we of course had to talk about pizza.

Their latest single “Park Place” will be on their new album called Pyres which comes out on Friday, August 23. You can pre-save over on Spotify. They will be celebrating the record release on Friday, August 23 at the Sanctuary in Hamtramck with Central Dogma (a future guest on Fans With Bands) who also have a new album coming. In this episode, we talk with Frank from Trash Fiasco. This punk band from Chicago is eclectic and energetic with sludgy guitars, riveting rhythms, and vibrant vocals. It was great to talk with Frank about the band and their new album Exist as Instructed which includes tunes that have a Melvin-ish heaviness blended with rockabilly and psychedelic grooves. During our conversation we talked about influences, motivations, and pizza toppings.
