From art burnout to balance 22 Jul 202400:51:48

Whoop we made an episode!! After a long hiatus, Julie & Phoebe discuss the challenges they've faced in balancing art, life, and other responsibilities. We reflect on the difficulties of staying connected and maintaining a creative practice amidst busy schedules and personal obstacles. Despite these challenges, Phoebe talks about recent efforts to carve out studio time, the emotional rollercoaster of feeling like an artist, the pressure of social media, and the small victories in reconnecting with their artistic identities. Julie talks about her new podcast, "The Creative Kind," and how it offers a different perspective by interviewing other artists. They also touch on the importance of community and support, highlighting how connecting with others facing similar struggles can be validating and motivating.

You Asked, We Answered! 04 Sep 202300:49:00

This week we thought we’d try something new, so as the title suggests we asked the listeners to throw some questions at us. From our favouring artists to our favourite colours, there’s hopefully something of interest for you to listen to as we witter on... Full disclosure, we asked for questions aimed specifically at either of us but ended up just having a big ol’ pile that we picked randomly from. So sorry if we asked the wrong question to the wrong person, or if we didn’t manage to get to your question, we might just have to do another Q&A episode down the track! Keep the questions and fails coming, you can DM us a voice note @faillikeanartist on instagram and we might just play it out on the pod - Imagine that!

Navigating Comparison & Competitiveness as Artists28 Aug 202300:53:23

This week on the pod we discuss the tricky subject of comparison and competitiveness. We both admit to having these feelings especially during recent times when sales have been slower, and talk openly about how it makes us feel, and how we manage things when the green eyed monster inevitably does show up. We both realise that it is completely normal to feel a level of competitiveness and comparison, and it’s not about trying to quash that, but it’s what we do with those feelings that matters. We share personal anecdotes highlighting times when we’ve caught ourselves comparing, feeling jealous when we see fellow artists succeed, and how feelings of envy can actually be signposts towards growth. We chat about the negative impact of using others’ success as a metric to compare ourselves to, how to manage social media and stop the doom scroll… and how it’s far better to lean into community rather than see others as competition.

So if you’ve ever compared yourself to other artists and feelings of scarcity are creeping in, you’re not alone! This episode is one for you.

Gallery Representation, from Swiping Right to Partnering Up!21 Aug 202300:56:54

In this episode we discuss forming relationships with galleries and interior stores. From finding and approaching a gallery (specifically how we have approached them), and what to do if you get the ‘dreaded rejection’ email or worse still - totally ghosted. It’s a bit like the dating game really - just like finding the right partner involves figuring out compatibility, communication styles and looking for someone who supports you, finding the right gallery who you connect with and one that supports your growth in a way that feels aligned with you is very important. But it’s not always an easy journey - of course there’s always going to be times when things don’t work out, so finding a gallery does take resilience! Of course, we only have our own experiences to draw from, and we share what we feel are some things to consider. However, we have future episodes planned where we actually talk to some experts to get the inside knowledge!

When Failure Leads to Art Opportunities with Laura Horn07 Aug 202301:06:55

Well what an exciting episode - for the first time we have a co-host on the pod, the wonderful Laura Horn! We had a lovely relaxed chat with Laura, who is such an easygoing person full of so much knowlege and art biz wisdom.

We ask Laura where she is on the Fail Scale, and chat to her about why she hasn’t released an episode of her own podcast ‘The Laura Horn Art Podcast’ in almost a year. She reveals to us her biggest failure - and how that inspired a big change of focus that lead to a very successful but different type of revenue from art. We chat about how she has managed to step away from social media but still have her art business thrive, and her plans for her new art and recording cottage studio!

Thank you so much Laura! xx

Time Management & Self Care30 Jul 202301:01:47

This week on the pod we’ve both had fairly stressful things going on, which has led to some fwobbles and generally feeling like we are running on empty. So we end up chatting about how to apply self care during times when, well, there doesn’t seem to be time - and you realise there will never actually be enough time unless you make it. That led us onto the subject of time management where we discuss different strategies such as ‘paying yourself first’ and how we manage (and fail to manage) our time.

Pulling Threads & Answering Questions23 Jul 202301:02:28

This week is a slightly more upbeat conversation after the heaviness of the previous one. Phoebe breathes a sigh of relief that the school holidays are over, and reflects on her recent kid’s art workshop. Julie is sleep deprived, also grateful for some more studio time, and reveals how her new fitness regime is playing out…

We discuss the new meta app that is the latest hot topic - Threads. What is it? What’s the point of it, and do we - especially creatives - need it? We dig into how it could be useful vs a time waster.

We then move on and answer some of the listener questions that came in following on from our episode on quitting, pivoting, resting and second jobs.

Finally we wrap up with a call out for anyone in Dunedin who is interested in getting together with us in August when we meet up IRL! If you are please drop Julie a line here: faillikeanartist@gmail.com

Quitting, Second Jobs, Pivoting & Resting16 Jul 202300:47:18

As always, check out our Substack for a full list of show notes, ramblings and recommendations

This week we delve into the the tricky subject of when you feel like you want to throw in the towel, and give up trying to make ‘ends meet’ as an artist…

First, Julie chats about why she’s feeling peppy and shares her enthusiasm over her newest cloudscapes. Phoebe shares how the winter school holidays are going, how she survived a long car journey and her plans for a local kids art workshop.

This brings them onto the topic, as Phoebe reveals she’s been finding it challenging running an art business lately. They chat about the pitfalls of being self employed during a time when the economy is struggling, and what other options there are out there for artists. Julie boulsters Phoebe’s moral and reminds her of all the ways she’s diversified her income stream, and they discuss how feeling like ‘quitting’ can really just be a motivator to explore new directions or just to press pause on full time arting, and perhaps supplement your income another way - and how none of these makes you a failure.

We have never had so many people DM us about a topic before, so next week we’ll be dedicating a whole episode to answering your listener questions around quitting. If you have any more questions please drop us a line and let us know.

Unravelling Perfectionism - Part 209 Jul 202301:00:32

Check out our substack for a full set of show notes: https://faillikeanartist.substack.com/

This week, Julie chats about how her photoshoot went, and Phoebe reveals how she got over a fwobble. She also reveals her big news - that her artwork is now being represented in Australia by Greenhouse Interiors!

In this episode we carry on the conversation around perfectionism. We dig a bit deeper into how perfectionism affects our art practices, how it shows up in sneaky ways - even the recording of the podcast…

“The imperfections are what connect us so often. We strive for perfection to belong, to be loved and to have approval, and yet what connects us more than anything is the imperfections of our journey” - The Imperfects Podcast.

Unravelling Perfectionism - Part 102 Jul 202300:45:09

This week Julie discusses how lucky she feels to love her job, her impending photoshoot and her struggle with writing a newsletter. Phoebe is sick of the rain, feeling likes she’s failing at remembering important things and has finally sent off an important parcel of artwork. She has been procrastinating, which leads them into this week’s topic of perfectionism. What is perfectionism and how does it show up for them both? Do they even consider themselves perfectionists?

Positivity during difficult times25 Jun 202301:05:31

In this episode we delve into the topic of positivity, after a listener asked if we would consider changing the podcast title to something more ‘positive’. Julie and Phoebe chat about their thoughts on this idea, and why they decided to use the word ‘fail’ in the podtcast title in the first place. This leads them into a deeper dive into the concept of positivity. It’s not always easy to stay positive when life throws you lemons, (and you’re out of gin and your tonic has gone flat) sometimes you don’t want to ‘smile’ and put on a brave face. So what else can we do? They reflect on how they turn difficult situations around - using analogies about marigolds and onions…

Juggling porridge & listener Q's18 Jun 202301:14:47

This week on the pod Julie’s household has been hit by yet another bout of illness, causing her to fret over more missed studio time. Phoebe debriefs Julie on how her first ‘Sip and Paint’ art workshop went… and it brings up some profound realisations about why she has avoided teaching for so long. Julie realised she may now not be able to complete as many artworks for her exhibition, but shares a podcast she listened to that had a positive impact on the way she viewed this - realising that its only her that cares about the number of artworks, and the importance of enjoying the process rather than becoming stressed over a fixed outcome. Then they move on to answering listener questions, and share their advice on topics ranging from studio lighting and creating engaging instagram posts, to overcoming creative block and getting over the fear of getting crickets when you share your work.

Enjoy!

From sunbathing to surrendering...11 Jun 202300:57:53

Woohoo! We’re back after a two week break - a break that almost broke Julie! We really missed recording and chatting to each other, and had so much to tell each other that this episode ended up just being a ‘catch up’ chat, rather than the Q&A episode we had planned (that will be coming next week instead). We hope you enjoy this informal, funny chat that’s even less structured or professional than ever!

We discuss holidaying with kids and how challenging the reality of it can be, almost as challenging as saying the word “Worcestershire”! Julie is also struggling to name her upcoming exhibition, but shares how every cloud has a silver lining - her Fiji cloud photos have sparked a new creative direction…Phoebe updates us about her ‘fwobble’ and talks about how letting go of her word of the year has led to some surprising things happening. She also shares about a new venture that is out of her comfort zone - but she’s facing the fear and doing it anyway!

We hope you enjoy!

Anxiety, success and having a ‘fwobble’21 May 202301:11:16

In this week’s episode Phoebe shares her ‘panic and the pizzeria’ and her decision to change her ‘word’ of the year. She talks about how this year she has felt like she has been on the backfoot and talks about the anxiety that she's been struggling with because of this. Julie lets us know how she got on at her first ‘artist meet-up’ social event, wonders whether she’s been taking photos illegally and reveals a solution to her hunt for pliers! She shares that she's feeling time pressured to be able to adhere to her own deadline, especially with a holiday looming - will she be able to relax??!

They both delve into the idea of success and what this means to them. What is the difference between pride and success? And why can’t Julie say she’s successful!? It's a tricky topic and it brings up some interesting thoughts and feelings!

AI & Art - Is it Intelligence or Insanity?14 May 202301:10:33

In this episode Phoebe and Julie open the can of worms that is AI in art. They discuss this rapidly evolving new technology and its impact in the art world. And what a messy can of worms it is! They acknowledge that with this landscape changing so rapidly, the information they share may well be out of date very quickly. They try to keep the conversation neutral however it does occasionally swerve into their own personal opinions…

They (do their best to) answer listener questions about the use of AI in art and also the concerns over copyright, how AI image generators collect their data via ‘scraping’ and the potential risks this poses to artists. Also what impact the use of AI might have to those artists who create digital or graphic design work. They acknowledge that AI can have many benefits to artists such as short cutting some mundane creative processes, or how easy it can be to create ‘original’ source images, and how text AI generators can help those who struggle with writing. They also touch on the ethical and environmental implications around AI and talk about the need for development of regulations around the creation of AI art.

We may or may not end the show with Phoebe rapping a “Fail Like An Artist” rap created by ChatGPT…

Odd socks, crocs and the importance of art friends 07 May 202301:04:40

As an artist, experiencing self-doubt and loneliness is inevitable, especially since many of us tend to work alone. In this episode, Julie shares her struggles with self-doubt and exhibition worries, & how she overcame a recent experience of the 'comparison trap' with the help of her art friends. Phoebe expresses concern that Julie is working too hard (does she ever sleep?) shares some exciting news about her crocs*, and discusses her own current struggle with her work being stuck in the 'messy middle' stage. They also discuss they divided opinion of “should socks match” and introduce The Fail Scale - where are they at this week? If 1 is “whoops I spilled my paint water” and 10 is “whoops I burned down my studio”??

The conversation then shifts to the importance of having 'studio buddies' and how having an artist friend to talk to can help us overcome difficult moments more easily. If you are seeking a studio bestie, you can use the hashtag #FLAAPfriends in your posts or stories to let other artists know that you are open to connecting with someone. Remember that it's not necessary to meet up or even be in the same country - virtual support buddies can be just as valuable as in-person friends!

Perceptions Around Instagram 11 Dec 202300:57:59

This week we are chatting about perceptions. Phoebe recently reached a milestone and tipped over 100,000 Instagram followers, so we chat about how this came about after a long time little growth. We discuss how this number is a bit like being ‘rich in Monopoly’ and doesn’t mean instant sales or success. We delve into how it is impossible to predict when a reel will go viral, and also how follower count can impact people’s expectations and perceptions. We both have different ways of communicating using Instagram, but the one key similarity is that we never stray from being ourselves - sharing in a way that comes most naturally to us - and we both agree that using it to keep an up-to-date portfolio of work and building a genuine connection with your audience is far more important than follower count number. We also talk about what to do when you feel like there’s “no point” in posting because of the algorithm, and what holds artists (ourselves included) back from posting, such as worrying about how others perceive you and your art.

We hope you found this week’s episode interesting, please let us know your thoughts and any questions it raised.

"Shut up, you can" and other motivational quotes30 Apr 202300:58:30

We’re back baby!! We hope you’ve missed us in your ears because we’ve certainly missed podcasting. This week the format has changed slightly, firstly you’ll notice the pod has dropped at the beginning of the week, (yay you can now plan your entire week around when to listen!) and secondly since we hadn’t had a proper chat for a while, we decided to keep this episode more of a catch up rather than focusing on one particular topic. There definitely still fails in here though! Julie chats about her mission of setting herself a deadline to finish an ambitious amount of paintings and Phoebe…fails a lot…! And you’ll have to listen to find out why!

Failing at Prints11 Apr 202301:06:30

To print, or not to print… that is the question. In this episode we delve into the world of prints. Julie talks about when she tried to make selling photographs work and why she doesn’t offer prints or photographs any more. Phoebe talks about her print offerings and how she feels she’s failing at making them a streamlined part of her business. This week we also reached out to two artists for extra advice, Jen Seivers and Sierra Roberts, as we both felt we lacked enough experience to give a rounded view! With their help we do our best to answer as many listener questions as we could in the time we had. Feel free to carry on the conversation - if you have more questions do reach out!

Failing with Art Supplies04 Apr 202301:15:20

This week on the pod Julie’s experiencing the ‘joys of teething’ and subsequent sleep deprivation, whilst working on so many large artworks that 1 meter actually feels small! Phoebe has learnt a new skill - wand making, is trying anything to make her recovery from covid speedier and is trying out sound healing (*woo woo alert)  to recalibrate her request for abundance. Then we move on to discussing art supplies, the things we’ve bought that we no longer use and what we use now. Phoebe discusses the pros and cons of acrylic whilst Julie does the same for oil paint. Then the listener questions cover a range of topics that we try to troubleshoot and give advice about.

Failing to Get the Blue Tick28 Mar 202301:02:35

What is a ‘blue tick’ and what does it mean if you get one? This week we discussed the ins and outs of the new ‘paid for verification badge’ that Meta are offering Instagram users. We chat about how much does it cost, how can you get a discount, and what the benefits for artists - if any - actually are. We share feedback from those who got a blue tick prior to the paid version plus from a few artists who’ve already signed up for the paid version. As always we discuss our thoughts on the matter and our own fails with getting the elusive blue tick…

Failing at Being Original21 Mar 202301:20:56

What makes art original, when is copying ok and not ok? What can you do if you are worried about being copied? Phoebe opens up about a sensitive time, when she was blocked by an artist she admired, and also times when she has been copied and had images stolen and passed off as others’ work. Julie chats about sometimes feeling unoriginal due to the subject matters she paints, and how it feels to see others doing similar work. We discuss the ideas around whether there is such a thing as an original idea, where creative ideas come from and when it's ok to copy - and how not to cross the line.

Failing at Art & Motherhood07 Mar 202301:25:45

We started today's episode with the title ‘juggling art & life, but it quickly morphed into a discussion on balancing art & motherhood. We do hope to expand on other areas of the balancing act of having a creative career , but we just couldn’t fit any more into this episode !

We discuss the difficulties in finding time for art while parenting; mum guilt, time restraints, and financial pressure. Phoebe was primarily a mum first and then had to carve out time from her life for art, and Julie started her art career first and then had to find a way to parent and still find time to create. We also answer a bunch of listener questions and share some fails.

Failing at Instagram Q&A's28 Feb 202301:25:22

This week on the pod Phoebe and Julie have a follow up conversation about Instagram, this time answering listener questions. We chat about everything from scammers, bots, and fake followers to recording reels without cringing and choosing hashtags. As you can see this is quite a long episode, avd we still didn’t manage to answer every question that was submitted. If your question wasn’t answered we’re sorry! No doubt we will revisit this topic again as Instagram is an ever evolving platform so there will undoubtedly be new features and issues in the future. Hopefully this conversation will spark some ideas and put some concerns to rest, and there will be something in here for everyone to learn something new or put into practice!

Failing Forward - Learning To Pause Before You Start04 Dec 202300:49:46

This week we are chatting about how we reboot or start new artworks and art projects. We discuss the ways that we have failed at this in the past, by jumping in too quickly and not fully allowing ideas to develop, and how we both want to get better at pausing before rushing ahead. When thinking about planning, it’s no surprise that Julie is more of a spreadsheet user and Phoebe tends to use her less reliable ‘mind map’ system… We also discover the ‘interesting’ way that Phoebe visualises a year.

We hope you enjoy this chat, please share with us how you like to plan and restart!

Failing to find a style10 Jan 202300:46:18

It's episode 1 of Fail Like An Artist! In today's episode, we are discussing the juicy and elusive topic of “finding your style” - Is it something you need to search for? Are you born with one? Is it ok for it to change? What's the difference between style and genre?? Julie chats about when she felt called to bring in a completely different subject matter, and how that affected her style and made her worry galleries would reject her. And Phoebe talks about her journey of trying many different types and styles of art from resin to still life and everything in between… and how led her to feel like a failure for not being able to stick at one. Then we share how we have ‘not failed’ - the things we have learnt and where we are at now.

Evolving your art style11 Sep 202301:13:12

This week we revisit the topic of art style. We dig into the difference between style and genre and discuss how our art styles have emerged, and where they continue to evolve. We discuss the pros and cons of wanting to try ‘everything’ and how some people seem to display a style from the get-go. Julie talks through the differences between her two styles of painting, but doesn’t want to be pigeonholed, and Phoebe shares her S.T.Y.L.E acronym that explains how her style is evolving and what things she’s let go of in order to grow. We realise that a style is not a thing that you arrive at but a continually evolving process!
