Episode 84: St. John's Holds Off Providence 75-7312 Jan 202400:42:40

St. John's is currently tied for first place in the Big East and has started conference play 4-1 for the first time in 23 years. The Johnnies came out hot against Providence at MSG and then had to withstand a mighty counterpunch. In the end, some missed free throws by St. John's and a timely rebound by RJ Luis made it a rollercoaster of a game that ended with a 75-73 win.

Devin Carter dazzled for Providence but this tough fought win for St. John's is what builds a team's resilience come February and March.

Episode 83: St. John's Beats Villanova 81-71, Improve to 11-407 Jan 202400:36:08

St. John's went on the road and did something they haven't done since 1993, and that's beat Villanova at The Finn. Thanks to Joel Soriano and Daniss Jenkins the Johnnies were able to overcome not having Chris Ledlum, and a new career high by Brady Dunlap made sure of that. Dunlap got his first start as a Johnnie and rewarded Rick Pitino with 12 points in the 2nd half, to finish with 15. It was a solid defensive effort as the Johnnies held Eric Dixon and the Wildcats in check, something they often were unable to do in the past. St. John's is tied for first in the Big East at 3-1 and are now 11-4 on the season.

St. John's capped off their season at Carnesecca Arena with an 86-70 win over the Butler Bulldogs to improve to 10-4 on the season, and 2-1 in Big East play. With Posh Alexander returning to Queens, it was the Johnnies who would hound the Dogs into submission. Brady Dunlap introduced himself to the fans in Queens with 13 points and Joel Soriano added another double-double in his final game in Carnesecca Area. Episode 80: St. John's Unable to Play Grinch, Lose to UConn By 426 Dec 202300:33:03

St. John's had a great opportunity of stealing a win from the national champions on the road. Earlier in the day they'd learn that Donovan Clingan would miss the game for UConn and RJ Luis would be suiting up, so things were breaking right for St. John's. They took a 6 point lead into the half as the new zone defense was on display and working effectively once again. Some late mistakes and missed free throw unfortunately had St. John's go home with the loss but there were plenty of silver linings to take away from the loss.

The Red Storm kicked off conference play in style with a wire-to-wire win over the Xavier Musketeers, 81-66. It was the most balanced and complete effort of the season by the Johnnies and one that left Rick Pitino very happy after the game. Nahiem Alleyne got the start, Joel Soriano dominated the 2nd half, and St. John's started their conference play season 1-0.

Then we preview the big match up of the weekend against UConn. Will they be without Donovan Clingan? Can St. John's make it 3 in a row?

Episode 78: Red Storm Respond, Ram Fordham By 2219 Dec 202301:02:36

It was a get right game for St. John's from the defense to the bench, St. John's went into Madison Square Garden looking for put the ugly BC loss behind them. With Joel Soriano facing his old team, he made sure to let them know what they have been missing. 20 points, 10 rebounds from the big man helped St. John's to a 77-55 win as they get ready for Big East play.

(24:24) Then we're joined by friends of the pod Patrick Kane and Cole Latshaw of the Red Storm Rapid Reaction Podcast as we give our thoughts about the non conference portion of what we've seen of St. John's. Episode 77: Defensive Woes Continue, Red Storm Fall to Boston College13 Dec 202300:26:15

St. John's had a 10 point lead in the 2nd half, but the poor defense that head coach Rick Pitino has talked about all season made its way to Brooklyn and gave it all away. St. John's allowed Boston College to score at will, get to the paint whenever they wanted and could never stay in front of their defender. It's a loss that will hurt St. John's long term but if their defensive issues don't get corrected soon, there will be plenty more tough losses ahead.

Joel Soriano had a career high 24 points, Chris Ledlum chipped in with a double-double and Nahiem Alleyne proved once again why his championship experience is invaluable to this roster. Episode 173: Defense Pushes St. John's over Ole Miss 63-5808 Dec 202500:40:23

It's the true definition of a win is a win as St. John's offense was anemic and thankfully Ole Miss was worse. Powered by Defense and 8 blocks by Zuby Ejiofor St. John's finally beat an SEC team for the first time since 2012. Poor shooting, rough half court offense and just an overall cold night for just about everyone following a 9 day break led to an ugly basketball night in front of almost 15,000 fans at MSG. Tons of questions still remain with this team as they improve to 5-3.

Episode 73: St. John's Obliterates Holy Cross, Improve to 4-226 Nov 202300:25:44

After a tough week in Charleston, St. John's took a few days off to regroup. They stepped back onto the court in Queens on Saturday night and put a beating on Holy Cross to the tune of 91-45. It was the debut of RJ Luis who looked like a future star in a Red Storm Uniform. St. John's toned down the turnovers, dominated in the paint and got a bunch of points from their bench. On the heels of the Utah win, this Holy Cross dismantling was the type of confidence building win to keep the momentum rolling ahead of the road test against West Virginia.

Episode 72: St. John's Bounces Back, Beat Utah for 3rd Place in The Charleston Classic22 Nov 202300:43:09

St. John's left Charleston, South Carolina with two wins and momentum. After squeaking a win out against North Texas and falling to Dayton, the Red Storm had their hands full with a bigger Utah team. Luckily for Rick Pitino's crew, something clicked and the Johnnies put up 91 points in the most complete game played thus far. This was the St. John's team that a lot of people wanted to see and thought they'd see under Rick Pitino.  I'm joined by Kevin Connelly from Storm the Paint to go over the much needed win for St. John's

Great bounce back performances by Chris Ledlum and Nahiem Alleyne were aided by Daniss Jenkins, Joel Soriano and Jordan Dingle's best game of the year.

St. John's comes home 3-2 as the easier part of the non-conference schedule awaits.

Episode 71: St. John's Splits First Two Games in the Charleston Classic18 Nov 202300:38:07

St. John's kicked off the Charleston Classic with a nail bitter of a win over North Texas 53-52. After a hot start, the Johnnies offense hit a brick wall and it took great team defense and some late Joel Soriano free throws to win. Next up for the Red Storm was the Dayton Flyers which started out much better for St. John's, things went well in the first half, and then it all fell apart in the 2nd half mainly because of the fouls, and poor defense. Dayton beat St. John's 88-81.

We react from Charleston as St. John's falls to 2-2 on the season and will play in the 3rd place game on Sunday.

Episode 172: St. John's Craps Out in Las Vegas30 Nov 202501:03:51

Episode 64: St. John's Survives 89-78 vs Rutgers in Double OT22 Oct 202300:21:17

St. John's finally got a chance to play another team in a red jersey besides themselves. October 21st 2023 marked the first day that Rick Pitino coached the Red Storm in a basketball game. Albeit an exhibition against Rutgers, it definitely didn't feel like a game that didn't count. It took 10 extra minutes, and St. John's blew a 20 point lead but in the end came out on top.

St. John's beats Rutgers 89-78 in a wild game, one that Rick Pitino is happy went the way it did...double overtime and all.

We have injury news, NBA scouts at practice, some great anecdotes from Simeon Wilcher, and a great story from Brady Dunlap about his dad changing his jumpshot in 7th grade leading to tears, but also great success.

Episode 60: Rick Pitino Lands 4 Star Recruits Jaiden Glover and Khaman Maker22 Sep 202300:38:14

He credits Coach Mike Dunlap for believing in him and not letting him quit on St. John's when adversity hit his senior year. Sean gives out advice to young kids facing a similar career path after college and more.

Evans is now trying to do his part and help St. John's student athletes take advantage of their name, image and likeness, by being an advisor with Johnnies Collective. Episode 55: The Pressing Questions This Off-Season19 Aug 202300:49:32

Hiring Rick Pitino brings a lot of noise from the outside, good and bad. Since Rick Pitino was named head coach of St. John's in March there has been a ton of buzz, and Queens has been a hot bed of basketball action this off-season. With that buzz has of course been detractors and doubters. Said detractors and doubters, and perhaps even some St. John's fans, have been asked if all the sunshine and rainbows at St. John's is premature.

(5:50) I'm joined by Frank Molfetta as we break down the newly released non-conference schedule and how St. John's will fair in the pivotal swing games that are the Michigan, Charleston Classic, and West Virginia.

(24:49) Then we discuss some questions that will need to be answered if St. John's wants to be successful in year one of the Rick Pitino era. We play a little devils advocate, and discuss which questions hold water and which are just hate from the masses this off-season!

Let us know what you agree with and disagree with!

Episode 54: Chris Ledlum Comes Home25 Jul 202300:43:25

Just when you thought the roster was set, and the dog days of summer would provide little to no news...Rick Pitino does it again. A few months after committing to Tennessee over St. John's and Indiana, the Harvard transfer had a change of heart and found his way back into the portal.

The Staten Island native who played for the AAU New York Jayhawks is coming back home and joining a loaded St. John's team. We discuss the impact of Chris Ledlum, the potential starting lineup, how this still feels so foreign and more.

I'm joined by Thomas Cavanagh, Writer for SB Nation’s Rumble in the Garden and House Enterprise’s Road to the Garden.

In a related move Quinn Slazinski left St. John's and committed to West Virginia.

Check out Thomas' newest article on Chris Ledlum: https://www.rumbleinthegarden.com/2023/7/23/23800469/st-johns-recruiting-breaking-down-game-of-newest-johnny-chris-ledlum

Episode 53: Simeon Wilcher Commits to St. John's13 Jun 202300:27:06

Just when you thought they were done, Rick Pitino had another trick up his sleeve. After receiving his NLI release from North Carolina, Simeon Wilcher, a consensus top 35 player in the 2023 class took one visit. A few days later, he committed to the school who got his lone visit.

The 6-4 guard from Roselle Catholic is a bonafide stud who puts the proverbial cherry on top of Rick Pitino's inaugural class in Queens. I'm joined once again by NY Post's Zach Braziller to break down just how monumental this is for the St. John's basketball program.

Episode 52: Julian Champagnie Returns07 Jun 202300:49:27

On Episode 52 we welcome back fan favorite Julian Champagnie after a year in the NBA. When we last spoke Julian was getting ready to report to the Delaware Blue Coats. Since then he's been with the 76ers and thrived in 15 games with the San Antonio Spurs to close out the regular season.

We go through his first year as a pro, the highs and lows, how different the G-League is vs the NBA, scoring a career high 26 points and the movie-like story that went along with it...and so much more. Of course I couldn't let him go without talking some St. John's hoops...Julian gives his thoughts on Rick Pitino and the upcoming St. John's Red Storm, Joel Soriano's breakout year last season and more!

Episode 51: Jordan Dingle is a Johnnie13 May 202300:52:39

Rick Pitino has landed his splash of the off-season with Ivy League Player of the Year Jordan Dingle, committing to St. John's on Friday. The second leading scorer in college basketball last year, Dingle returns home to play for the new look Johnnies.

Over the last week, the Red Storm have also added RJ Luis, a transfer from UMass and their fourth Iona Gael transfer in Sadiku Ibine Ayo.

It's a guest packed show as Zach Braziller of the NY Post, Patrick Kane of the Red Storm Rapid Reaction Podcast and Frank Molfetta all return to help break down the busy week.

We go through the impact of Dingle joining the roster, how St. John's stacks up with the rest of the Big East so far and even some schedule talk. It's a jam packed episode!

Episode 50: A Plan Is Coming Together04 May 202300:46:37

It's been just about 50 days since Rick Pitino took over the reigns at St. John's so why not drop episode 50 right along with it. The month of April saw a lot of roster turnover and new faces added. Fans will have 10 new names to learn as Rick Pitino restocks the shelves in Queens.

With only three players from last year's squad returning, many fans were worried early on about how the new staff would construct the team, what kind of vision would they have, and what kind of talent would be brought in. Well I'm here to break it all down, go through the new roster that still has three spots remaining.

To help me do that I'm joined by Frank Molfetta, known to the masses on Twitter as FrankinGeneral, he hosts a bunch of the spaces meet ups on the social media platform and he's kept his eye on all the happenings just as closely as I have. We go through each player on the roster, how they fit, and why Rick Pitino carefully selected each one to be part of his first year at St. John's.

Episode 49: Louisville Legend Peyton Siva31 Mar 202300:40:07

On today's episode I wanted to find out what a Rick Pitino program was really like, from the inside. What it takes to play for Pitino, work for Pitino and win with Pitino. There may not be a better person to answer these questions and more than Lousiville Cardinals legend and 2013 National Champion, Peyton Siva.

Siva played four years for Rick Pitino at Louisville went to two final fours and won it all his senior year. We discuss his recruitment, the expectations, the preparation and so much more as we try to tell St. John's fans what this new era under Rick Pitino will be like.

I go through the press conference and all the happenings with Zach Braziller of the NY Post as St. John's new era is underway.

Episode 47: St. John's Hires Rick Pitino 21 Mar 202300:28:45

Where there is smoke, there most certainly is fire. Since March 10th, there has been one name everyone has attached to the St. John's Basketball Head Coaching vacancy. That name is now the 22nd head coach in program history.

Rick Pitino, the Naismith Hall-of-Famer, one of the greatest coaches in basketball history, known for taking Providence, Kentucky, and Louisville to the final four will now be tasked in turning around a dormant Red Storm program.

Welcome to a new era of St. John's basketball.

Episode 46: St. John's Fires Head Coach Mike Anderson11 Mar 202300:33:24

On March 10th, St. John's announced that they have made a change in leadership with the mens basketball program and parted ways with Mike Anderson. After four seasons, St. John's failed to get to the post season under Anderson and there will be a new man patrolling the sidelines in Queens come November.

I'm joined by Newsday's Roger Rubin to discuss St. John's coaching history, Mike Anderson being fired, and what's to come. The potential of Rick Pitino is buzzing and we discuss what it would mean if he would be the 22nd head coach in program history.

Episode 45: St. John's Suffers Deja Vu Big East Tournament Ending10 Mar 202300:12:56

After opening the Big East Tournament with a fairly easy 13 point win over Butler, St. John's had a double digit lead against #1 seed Marquette on Thursday afternoon. Much like last year against Villanova, in which they blew a 17 point lead, St. John's couldn't hang on and would end up losing in Overtime.

The offense and decision making by St. John's on the floor was lacking and off of the floor by Mike Anderson was questionable again. The third loss to Marquette has left fans screaming for change, and the noise around the program to head in a new direction at Head Coach amplifies.

Episode 170: Alabama Backcourt Too Much For St. John's in 103-96 Loss10 Nov 202501:17:58

The Garden was rocking, the Johnnies had the lead in the second half, but the trio of Labaron Philon, Aden Holloway and Latrell Wrightsell Jr were too much for St. John's to withstand. The Red Storm offense scored 96 points, even with a low volume and poor three point output, but it's the defense that left many fans scratching their heads. Powered by Zuby Ejiofor's All-American like 27 points and 10 rebound performance it took until the second half for the guards to get going. Alabama got great product from Taylor Bol Bowen to supplement the firepower from the guards at every turn.

So St. John's loses their first big game of the season, one of potentially six big non conference games, we discuss what needs to improve quickly if this team is to make noise later this season. We're joined this episode by Charles Branch of the Crimson Crossover Podcast covering Alabama.

Episode 44: Season Ends with Marquette Loss, 17-14, 7-1305 Mar 202300:22:03

A disappointing season came to a close on Saturday afternoon after a comeback effort fell short against the best team in the Big East. After being down by 19 early in the first half, St. John’s fought back valiantly to make it a tight game with seconds left.

We’ll touch on the UConn loss at MSG and how their fans infiltrated the Garden and what happens next for St. John’s as the next few weeks will be busy it seems. The Big East Tournament starts on Wednesday as St. John’s will face Butler at 3pm.

Episode 43: St. John's Sweeps Season Series With Georgetown 79-7024 Feb 202300:13:59

It's a game you're supposed to win and St. John's did just that, as they get a 79-70 win over the Georgetown Hoyas, sweeping the season series. Andre Curbelo returned to the court for the Red Storm and they would need his 5 steals and 11 points. It wasn't easy as St. John's poor three point shooting made the trip to Washington, and the inability to put a team away made this too close for comfort.

St. John's has two games remaining in the regular season before the Big East Tournament starts on March 8th.

Episode 42: St. John's Lack of Discipline Proves Costly in 77-67 Loss 19 Feb 202300:14:29

In front of a sold out Carnesecca Arena St. John's was looking to make it 14-0 on Bobblehead night. They fought back from down double digits but turnovers, lobs and wide open threes were all catalysts in what would end up a 77-67 loss to the Creighton Bluejays.

The loss is just another chapter in a frustrating season where multiple players were suspended prior to the game as the rollercoaster of a year is nose diving to a finish.
