Welcome back to Explorers Guild! I’m your host Leah, and I’m here to let you in on the story of some of the best game franchises out there at the moment… in my opinion. So maybe if you’re looking for a refresher, a familiar story to listen to, or you’re just curious about a game you haven’t had chance to play, this is for you! There will of course be spoilers, and I won’t be covering absolutely every detail here in this short podcast, but if something piques your curiosity it’s a game I’d wholeheartedly recommend playing… or at least watching a playthrough of online!

Over the past few years, Sony has been knocking it out of the park with their exclusive story based titles, beautiful cinematic games with unique and interesting premises, and the 2017 release from Guerrilla Games, Horizon Zero Dawn, was no exception. You might have seen a few images from the game, notably the cover art showing our fierce red-headed protagonist battling a… huge robotic dinosaur creature.

In this podcast we'll talk through the entire story from start to finish.

Glossary of terms

Doppler – Shapeshifters of sorts who can mimic man or beast. Naturally rather hideous, but their shapeshifting skills are exceptional. They are naturally gentle and kind.

Djinn – being that can grant 3 wishes, much like genies. No take-backsies.

Witcher- A person who has trained and developed physically via the use of Mutagens to become an effective monsterslayer for hire. Longer life spans, accelerated healing and disease resistance, but sterile with cat like eyes.

Sorceress – Woman educated in magic, doomed to madness unless their latent powers are harnessed and controlled. Study in various schools on the continent and have political influence.

Continent – The land in which the events of the series mostly take place. There are other areas beyond the continent mentioned but they aren’t visited.

Skellige – Nordic inspired islands set off to the east of the mainland. Ruled by Jarls.

Rivia – Small kingdom in the North west mountains.

Novigrad – Free city on the North West area of the continent, within Redania but not ruled by it. Major port, very busy and one of the biggest cities on the continent.

– A Kingdom in the North, not particularly strong, ruled by Foltest until his assassination, for which Geralt was wrongly blamed.

Have you had a gander at the Witcher Netflix series and wondered how it all ties into the game universe? Or maybe you've played through The Witcher series but you're still curious about some of the history and stories the iconic characters are involved in?

In this podcast we look at the story right from the beginning, following Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri's journeys all the way up to the end of the Witcher 3, asking what exactly is a Witcher? Why is Ciri so special? and why is Emhyr such a tw*t?

(Note: I was suffering with some intense congestion while recording this for some reason, sorry if I sound stuffy!)

World of Warcraft - The Lich King

In this episode we explore the origins and journey of the Lich King, the fearsome being that held Azeroth in its frosty grip for many years.

We rehash some of the early events of Sargeras and Kil'Jaeden, and the inception of the Horde on Draenor, so if you've heard this before and want to skip the new stuff starts around 6 minutes in! I left it in for anyone who hasn't listened to the previous episodes.

(and on a personal note: This started as a passion project and as I write and record each podcast the way I tell stories is evolving - originally I intended a casual chat vibe but as time goes on i'm looking forward to settling into telling a story as well as I can. So bear with me as I learn and improve my skills and style throughout this series!)

Topics covered: Tainting of the Orcs, Portal through to Azeroth, Thrall, Orgrim Doomhammer and Grommash Hellscream, Durotar and Orgrimmar, Garrosh's bloodlust and Sylvanas as Warchief... with some bits inbetween.
