Episode 201: Dazzling Killmen03 Sep 202401:49:04

This week we're discussing every album by Dazzling Killmen. While they were peers of bands like Scratch Acid and the Jesus Lizard, and worked with Steve Albini numerous times, the Killmen were impossible to compare. Equal parts noise rock, punk, and math rock, their music is ferocious, complex, and unmeasurably tight. If you're into noisy aggressive music at all, you simply must hear them. They are legends who don't get nearly enough credit.

Episode 200: Metallica (Pt. 1)27 Aug 202402:12:15

This week we're discussing every album by Metallica from 1983 to 1988. That's right, all the thrash albums. This era highlights not only some of their most ferocious and technical material (and let's face it, BEST albums), but also their time with legendary bassist Cliff Burton before his tragic death. Everyone and their mom has heard these albums, but now it's time to hear them again.

WAR. by WHORES. | Album Review25 Jun 202400:34:02

This week we're discussing WAR., the newest album by noise rock band WHORES. This album hits insanely hard. If you find yourself in the mood for noise rock with a healthy dosage of sludge metal mixed in there, you'll have a hard time finding a better album than this one this year. Crank this one loud, folks.

Black Country, New Road Made Mike Cry04 Oct 202200:23:03

This week we’re discussing Ants From Up There by Black Country, New Road. If you haven’t heard of these guys, they’re spastic, unpredictable, and surprisingly emotional post-rock from the UK. This is a fascinating album on its own, but days before its release, singer/guitarist Isaac Wood left the band. While they are continuing without him, you have to hear this album to fully appreciate what that means.

Episode 151: DRI27 Sep 202201:48:32

This week we’re discussing every album by DRI, the Dirty Rotten Imbeciles. Led by singer Kurt Brecht and guitarist Spike Cassidy, DRI helped to pioneer crossover thrash (the hybrid of hardcore punk and thrash metal). They were the most explosive and speedy punk band in their formative years, but they quickly transitioned seamlessly into one of the best and most respected thrash bands. Play them loud and try not to speed if you do it while driving.

How Heavy Is the New Russian Circles Album?20 Sep 202200:24:52

This week we're taking a break from discographies to talk about the latest album by Russian Circles--Gnosis. For those who don't know, Russian Circles is an instrumental post-metal trio made up of Mike Sullivan (guitar), Dave Turncrantz (drums), and Brian Cook (bass). We're fans and we think you should be, too. If you like the band, chances are you'll like the new album, but it's probably safe to say it won't be winning over any skeptics.

Episode 150: Swans (Pt. 1)13 Sep 202202:17:23

This week we’re discussing every album by Swans from 1982-1986. Led by the unpredictable and immensely talented Michael Gira (and accompanied by long-time collaborators Norman Westberg and Jarboe), Swans is a band that can’t possibly be described in a paragraph. Their musical range is unprecedented and continues to evolve today. However, this era of the band made some of the most punishing, brutal, and disturbing music ever made. Unlike anything and truly barbaric. Enter with caution.

Loose Ends: God of Thunder by White Zombie06 Sep 202200:42:52

[ORIGINAL PATREON AIR DATE: 1/28/2022] This week we're tying up some loose ends by discussing White Zombie's God of Thunder EP. We really should've covered this on our White Zombie episode, but we didn't so here ya go. It's a solid EP that highlights the band's transition into the White Zombie we all know and love. Plus some hilariously entertaining vocals by Rob. We also talk endlessly about the Babe movies, wrestling entrances, interventions, and other stuff that doesn't matter. Be sure to check out our full episode on White Zombie if you haven't already!

Episode 149: Thrice30 Aug 202202:21:03

This week we’re discussing every album by Thrice. If you’re a fan of this band, you’ll have to wait in line if you want to stab us. To say we didn’t enjoy our time with them might be an understatement. Thrice started out emo, then grew into a brutal post-metal band for about 5 minutes before maturing into standard alt rock. We go into excruciating detail.

Episode 148: Catherine Wheel23 Aug 202201:30:12

This week we’re discussing every album by Catherine Wheel. Credited as one of the pioneers of shoegaze (which is technically true), Catherine Wheel never stopped growing musically within their lifetime. However, they never lost the essence of the 90s. Seriously, they’re one of the most 90s bands ever. Also, singer Rob Dickinson is Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson’s cousin. Whoa.

Episode 147: Poison Idea16 Aug 202202:04:56

This week we’re discussing every album by Poison Idea. As brutal and crazy as the American hardcore scene was in the early 80s, Poison Idea stood above the rest in how devastatingly real they were. Gun violence, morbid obesity, drug dealing, homelessness, and death are just as much a part of this band as their music. Led by vocalist Jerry A. Lang and guitarist Tom “Pig Champion” Roberts until his death in 2006, Poison Idea make a strong argument for being the kings of punk.

Episode 146: Probot09 Aug 202200:58:28

This week we’re discussing the one and only album by Dave Grohl’s Probot. The band was a passion project by Grohl and was made to quench his thirst for metal. Every track has a different, legendary guest vocalist. Lemmy, King Diamond, Max Cavalera, Cronos, and Wino are only a few of the heavy hitters we have on this album. Even Jack Black makes an appearance. If you’re a fan of metal, this one is a must.

Episode 195: Siouxsie and the Banshees (Pt. 2)18 Jun 202401:55:24

This week we're discussing the remaining albums by Siouxsie and the Banshees. This era covers 1984-1995, into their subsequent break up. While there are still plenty of beloved albums in this era, this is also where some complications hit the band. One of which being their brief stint with The Cure's Robert Smith on guitar. It's not all good, folks, but there's still great stuff to be had here. Be sure to check out part 1 of our Siouxsie episodes, which is episode 190.

Episode 145: The Virgins26 Jul 202200:53:30

This week we’re discussing every album by The Virgins. Let’s just address this up front—we hate this band. It wasn’t our idea to cover them and we wish we weren’t so easily bribed to do so. But we did our best to give this band a fair shot and came out nauseous. Led by sole consistent member, singer/model Donald Cumming, The Virgins were short-lived, but were part of The Strokes’ era of indie in the early 00s. That’s about all we got.

This week we’re discussing every album by System of a Down. If you’ve been alive for the past 20 years, you can stop reading this. If you haven’t, then System of a Down was basically one of the last (maybe even THE last) massive, mainstream rock band in America. A fact that is doubly impressive when you hear how intricate and absolutely insane some of this music is. Extremely talented, unique, and wild. Not for everyone, but an important band.

Episode 143: The Blood Brothers12 Jul 202201:33:28

This week, we’re discussing every album by The Blood Brothers. They a hard band to condense into a single description, but let’s just say they’re wild and they’re not for everyone. From Seattle, WA, The Blood Brothers can technically be called indie or post-hardcore, but they were far more mathy, chaotic, and unpredictable than the standard noisy rock band. There’s a lot to love and hate here, that’s for sure.

[ORIGINAL PATREON AIR DATE: 12/31/2021]

We deliberately didn't cover this album on our original ELO episode, but we're finally getting to it now. This record is the soundtrack to the box office flop of the same name, Xanadu. Aside from starring Olivia Newton-John, we don't know much about the movie, but the soundtrack isn't too bad! At least the ELO half isn't. The first half is pure Olivia Newton-John, so take that how you will. The two collaborate on only one song here, just in case you were expecting the most 80s supergroup ever. Don't forget to check out our full episode on ELO (links below), as well as our Loose Ends on ELO's most recent album, From Out of Nowhere.

Sims (Scratch Acid), Duane Denison (later of Tomahawk), and Mac McNeilly, The Jesus Lizard were special, plain and simple. Tight and punishing rhythm section, strange and haunting guitar lines, and David Yow screaming, slobbering, and breathing all over the mic. Listen to them now, please.

This week we’re discussing every album by post-punk band The Sound. Led by the late Adrian Borland, who tragically committed suicide in 1999, The Sound is easily one of the most underrated post-punk bands to exist. They began as garage rock-inspired punk and quickly made their way toward the new wave side of things, but with a few surprises along the way. Interesting and ultimately heartbreaking story this band has.

Episode 140: MF DOOM14 Jun 202202:17:28

This week we’re discussing every album by MF DOOM. Known for his incredibly unusual samples, complex and clever lyrics, and his stainless steel gladiator mask, DOOM (real name Daniel Dumile) opened up an entirely new layer of hip-hop. There is so much to say about this dude—he was truly something else. We’re pretty sure he died in 2020, but we’re not certain.

Episode 139: Portishead07 Jun 202201:35:04

This week we’re discussing every album by Portishead. Credited with pioneering trip-hop, as well as being one of the biggest bands of the 90s, Portishead released only three albums, yet managed to evolve alt music exponentially with each one. While they’ve never officially broken up, they are in no rush to put out records and only do so when they have something to say. A rare and impressive trait from a band with their level of success.

Episode 138: Mercury Rev31 May 202202:03:19

This week we’re discussing every album by Mercury Rev. Led by Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper (with huge contributions by Dave Fridmann), Mercury Rev left their mark on indie rock with their 1998 album, Deserter’s Songs. But they have so many other albums that are either insanely underrated or overlooked completely. Their friendship with the Flaming Lips explains the stylistic similarities between the two, but their songwriting stands on its own.

Episode 137: Martin Dupont24 May 202201:40:57

This week we’re discussing every album by French electronic group Martin Dupont. While they never achieved mainstream success, they undoubtedly contributed to the advancement of electronic music in the mid 80s. Led by Alain Séghir, who was in medical school to become a surgeon at the time, Martin Dupont’s influence on the genre is obvious. Underrated, underappreciated, and aged better than you’d expect.

Lives Outgrown by Beth Gibbons | Album Review11 Jun 202400:35:07

This week we're discussing the debut solo album by Portishead vocalist Beth Gibbons titled Lives Outgrown. We honestly weren't sure what to expect from this record, but what we got is easily one of the best albums of the year. While there are hints of Portishead's sound here, Gibbons has taken a turn for the dark, orchestral, and tribal. This is one you gotta hear.

Episode 136: Call Me Lightning17 May 202201:05:36

This week we’re discussing every album by Call Me Lightning. From Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Call Me Lightning was a manic indie band (closer to noise rock) made up of core members Nathan Liley on guitar/vocals and Shane Hochstetler on drums. The band was short-lived and there isn’t a whole lot of info on them, but they have a cult following and some insanely good tunes. If you’re a fan of early 00s indie and noise rock in any way, these guys are a must.

[Also, Faraquet was not from Wisconsin--they were from Washington DC and we just forgot to correct it.]

Episode 135: Lauryn Hill10 May 202201:04:44

This week we’re discussing the only album by Lauryn Hill. Hill, who originally left her mark with hip-hop group the Fugees, changed the landscape of R&B/soul music with her album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. However, the immense success of the record led to a laundry list of scandals and drama. Love triangles, lawsuits, potential cult leaders, and eventually Hill doing actual time in jail. There are few artists with this insane of a story.

Episode 134: Septic Death03 May 202201:11:54

This week we’re discussing every album by Septic Death. If you aren’t familiar with the band, you’re definitely familiar with their singer, Pushead (aka Brian Schroeder), who is most known for his incredible artwork. Everything from Metallica, to the Misfits, to having his own limited edition Nike sneaker, Pushead’s style is unmistakable. Septic Death, however, is one of the most absolutely insane hardcore punk bands to ever exist. Words do not do them justice. They’re weird, folks.

This week we’re discussing every album by the great Jim Croce. Known by most as the guy who did “Time in a Bottle” and "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," Croce was an exceptional songwriter and folk musician. The man struggled every minute of his career until his tragic and unexpected death in 1973, just days before the release of what would be his last record. Good stuff, sad stuff, real stuff.

Episode 132: Saint Vitus19 Apr 202201:44:23

This week we’re discussing every album by Saint Vitus. Led by guitarist Dave Chandler, Saint Vitus pretty much invented doom metal in the early to mid 80s after being signed to Greg Ginn’s (of Black Flag) record label, SST. While the band has gone through numerous vocalists and lineup changes, the infamous Scott Wino Weinrich left his mark on this band with some of their best albums. Heavy stuff, but definitely not for everyone.

This week we’re discussing every album by Scratch Acid. Formed in Austin, Texas, Scratch Acid were one of the very first noise rock bands and coined the style associated with Touch & Go Records. Although they are most famous for being one of Kurt Cobain’s favorite bands, Scratch Acid is a group unlike any other. You simply have to hear them. After they disbanded, singer David Yow and bassist David Wm. Sims went on to form The Jesus Lizard.

Episode 128: Death (from Detroit)22 Mar 202201:07:58

This week we’re discussing every album by Death, the proto-punk band from Detroit, Michigan. Such an incredible band with one of the most fascinating and tragic backstories. Death was formed in the early 70s by brothers David, Bobby, and Dannis Hackney. The group somehow accidentally invented punk, but was lost to obscurity because no record label would touch the name Death. Fast forward 35 years and their recordings were discovered and reissued, along with the documentary A Band Called Death. Awesome band, and awesome story.

This week we’re discussing every album by XTC. Led by Andy Partridge, few bands have the creative journey that XTC did. They started out as blistering post-punk, grew into an accessible 80s pop act, went on to pioneer modern alternative, only to end up tossing in a bunch of orchestras, wasting all their money in the process. By the end of their journey, the band was whittled down to two members who hated each other. This is a good one, so strap in.

This week we’re discussing every album by the Walker Brothers. Made up of core members Scott, John, and Gary Walker (their last names are Walker in the same vein as the Ramones), the Walker Brothers began as a baroque pop, country western-influenced cover band in the 60s. Their hits “Make It Easy on Yourself” and “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” are gut-wrenching ballads that everyone should hear. However, their last album is entirely original and takes the band in an insane and unexpected direction.

This week we’re discussing every album by the insane Necrophagist. Led by guitarist, vocalist, and main songwriter Muhammed Suiçmez, Necrophagist is one of the most beloved technical death metal bands. Partly because of their brutal and endlessly complex songs, and partly because of their sheer mystery. The band released two albums and is rumored to have recorded a third nearly a decade ago. However, Muhammed has abandoned the project and all plans to release it for seemingly no reason. Necrophagist isn’t for the faint of heart—they’re possibly the most brutal band we’ve covered yet.

Episode 121: Rapeman01 Feb 202200:49:32

This week we’re discussing every album by Rapeman. These guys were a noise rock supergroup made up of Steve Albini on guitar/vocals (Big Black, Shellac), David Wm. Sims on bass (Scratch Acid, Jesus Lizard), and Rey Washam on drums (Big Boys, Scratch Acid, Ministry). Rapeman took the buzz saw noisiness of Big Black and coupled it with one of the most incredible rhythm sections in all of rock. A power trio that sounded ten times bigger than they actually were. While they are the most obscure out of all of Steve Albini’s projects, their brutal lyrics and provocative band name landed them in trouble just as much as you’d expect.

Episode 120: Melvins Pt. 325 Jan 202201:41:50

This week we’re discussing the last remaining albums by the Melvins. This is the most current era of the band, spanning from 2012 to 2021. Easily the least predictable batch of albums compared to the rest, due to the revolving door lineup changes. Countless guest appearances, the introduction of Steve McDonald, as well as a bona fide Butthole Surfers supergroup. As usual, Buzz and Dale continue to not disappoint.

Episode 119: The Pogues18 Jan 202201:27:00

This week we’re discussing every album by The Pogues. Led by the world’s most infamous set of teeth, Shane MacGowan, The Pogues pioneered Celtic punk. If you’re not sure what that sounds like, just imagine the most Irish music you can, speed it up to 100bpm, and you’ve nailed it. Which is a bit ironic since they’re from London and not Ireland. This definitely isn’t a band for everyone, but they’re fun, snarly, and talented as all hell. Grab a pint and sit back, this is a fun one.

Episode 118: Mother Love Bone11 Jan 202200:57:19

This week we’re discussing every album by Mother Love Bone. Credited (along with Green River—check out our episode on them) with pioneering grunge, Mother Love Bone’s promising career was cut short after the sudden death of frontman Andrew Wood. As a result, members Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard went on to form Temple of the Dog (as a tribute to Wood) and eventually Pearl Jam. While Mother Love Bone’s music sounds more alternative metal than grunge, they were still paramount to the scene in Seattle. Good stuff.

Loose Ends: From Out of Nowhere by ELO04 Jan 202200:41:23

There's no excuse for this one. This album came out two years ago and we had no idea. So we're barely covering it now. On the bright side, Jeff Lynne is still kicking! In addition to the album, we also talk about our adventures at Taco Bell. Don't forget to check out our original episode on ELO if you haven't already. Links below!

This week we're discussing the latest album by metalcore band Knocked Loose, titled You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To. Now Alex and Mike aren't the hugest fans of hardcore/metalcore, but they are fans of extreme music. And let me tell you, ANY fan of extreme music must hear this album. The hype is real, folks. This is one of the most creative and engaging metal albums of the year.

Episode 117: ABBA21 Dec 202101:48:02

This week we’re discussing every album by ABBA. They need no introduction, but we will say that they are more than just a disco band—ABBA is an all-around pop juggernaut. With hits like “Waterloo,” “Dancing Queen,” and “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!,” it’s obvious why they were so huge. But they have a thousand great songs you haven’t heard. Grab your platform shoes and get ready.

Episode 116: The La's14 Dec 202100:47:52

This week we’re discussing The La’s only album. Led by Lee Mavers, the La’s put out one of the world’s most famous singles, “There She Goes.” But don’t let that influence you—the rest of the album totally rips. Without question a wonderful album and band, yet Mike and Alex disagree on it entirely. Whose side do you take?
