My family are living in Canning Town, in the East End of London, close to the Royal Docks. It's late summer, 1939 and rumours are rife about an impending war with Germany. The government are encouraging families to send their children out of London, in anticipation of heavy bombing once war is declared. The children would be taken to safe areas far away from the city, but for security reasons parents would not be informed where or when.
