Some of the most memorable places on a European river cruise aren't always the cities that made you book the itinerary.
Travelers may choose the Danube for Vienna and Budapest, the Seine for Paris and Normandy, or a Dutch waterways cruise for Amsterdam. But sometimes it's the smaller, less familiar port—the name you barely noticed when comparing itineraries—that becomes one of the places you can't stop talking about when you get home.

And “underrated” doesn't mean undiscovered.

Cochem, Germany | Moselle River
The Moselle doesn't always receive the attention of the Rhine, but the sailing itself can be one of the highlights.
Steep vineyard-covered hills rise above the river, villages sit along the water, and castles appear above the valley.
Cochem brings all of those elements together, with its riverside Old Town, surrounding vineyards and Reichsburg Castle overlooking the Moselle.
It's also a perfect example of why travelers shouldn't dismiss a smaller port simply because they don't recognize its name.
River Cruise Reality Check: When comparing itineraries, don't look only at the major cities. Ask what the river lets you experience between those cities.
Miltenberg, Germany | Main River
Many travelers sail portions of the Main without giving much thought to the river itself.
Miltenberg is one reason you should.
Its historic center, half-timbered buildings, old market square and Mildenburg Castle create the kind of small-town German atmosphere many travelers picture when dreaming about Europe.
And it doesn't need a long sightseeing checklist to be worthwhile.
Sometimes a great river cruise port is simply a wonderful place to wander.
Les Andelys, France | Seine River
Paris may get top billing on a Seine River cruise, but Les Andelys offers an entirely different chapter of French history.
High above the Seine are the ruins of Château Gaillard, the fortress associated with Richard the Lionheart, while Petit Andely sits below along the river.
It's a reminder that a Seine cruise isn't simply about Paris, Monet and Normandy's 20th-century history. Medieval Normandy is part of the story too.
Tournon-sur-Rhône, France | Rhône River
Lyon, Avignon and Arles may be some of the recognizable names on Rhône itineraries, but Tournon-sur-Rhône deserves a closer look.
Tournon sits directly along the Rhône, with its historic center and castle overlooking the river. Across the water is Tain-l'Hermitage and the vineyards of Hermitage.
Rather than simply taking an excursion to wine country, here you're standing in the middle of the Rhône Valley landscape.
Sometimes the best choice is not to rush away from the port where your ship has docked.
Pinhão, Portugal | Douro River
On the Douro, the landscape is an essential part of the destination.
Pinhão sits in the heart of the Douro wine region, surrounded by terraced vineyards and wine estates.
Even the town's railway station helps tell the story of the valley through its famous azulejo panels depicting vineyard work and Douro landscapes.
Pinhão isn't about collecting famous monuments.
It's about understanding the relationship between the river, vineyards, wine and people of the Douro Valley.
Vidin, Bulgaria | Lower Danube
For many travelers, “Danube River cruise” immediately means Vienna and Budapest.
But the Danube continues east.
Cruising through Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania introduces travelers to a very different part of Europe, and Vidin is one example.
Its Baba Vida Fortress sits beside the Danube and reflects centuries of history far removed from the imperial capitals farther upstream.
It also raises an important question for repeat river cruisers:
You've cruised the Danube—but which Danube?
The Lower Danube can offer a dramatically different cultural and historical experience.
Dordrecht, Netherlands | Dutch Waterways
On Dutch and Belgian waterways itineraries, Amsterdam and nearby attractions such as Kinderdijk naturally attract attention.
But don't assume every smaller port is simply somewhere to leave on an excursion.
Dordrecht's historic waterways, harbors, bridges and trading heritage make the city itself worth exploring.
Before automatically boarding a motorcoach, ask:
What if I stay?
Sometimes one of the advantages of river cruising is simply stepping off the ship and discovering the place where the river has brought you.
How to Choose a Better River Cruise Itinerary

Don't judge an itinerary only by the number of cities you recognize.

Sometimes that’s an unusual itinerary.
Sometimes it’s access to experiences that allow us to connect more deeply with the destination.
Sometimes it’s the season, the pace, the amount of time we have in a destination, or simply an itinerary that isn't available very often.
And we deliberately plan fewer of these journeys because I want each one to feel special.
The destination may be familiar. The way we experience it together is what makes it a Signature Journey.
Not the way we do it.
Bryan and I are your hosts and travel advisors, but that doesn't mean we're going to escort you around Europe every second of every day.
On a river cruise, you might choose one excursion while another traveler chooses something completely different. You may decide to wander through town, visit a museum, find a café, relax aboard the ship, or spend some time exploring on your own.
Then later, we may all find ourselves swapping stories over dinner or meeting for a drink in the lounge.
You don't have to do everything together to feel like you're part of the group.
And perhaps most importantly:
This is still your vacation.
In 2026, Bryan and I hosted 30 travelers on an AmaWaterways river cruise through Europe for a military reunion with the Army unit Bryan served with while we lived in Würzburg, Germany.
Afterward, several travelers said some version of:
“Sonia, all we had to do was show up.”
That's exactly what I want.
There's a lot that happens before a group ever reaches Europe—planning calls, flights, packing questions, excursions, deadlines, travel documents, supplier communication and all those little “Am I forgetting something?” details.
Our Signature Journey travelers have access to planning support, a private community and opportunities to meet their fellow travelers before departure.
We're there during the journey, too. We can't control airlines, weather, rivers or every unexpected change that travel can throw at us. But if something does happen, you aren't left wondering what to do next.
Before. During. After. We're there throughout the journey.
One of my favorite things about traveling with a group is watching a little community form.
You start recognizing names and faces before departure. Then you see the same people on an excursion, at lunch, walking through town or relaxing aboard the ship.
Someone tells a funny story at dinner.
An inside joke begins.
People who were strangers a few days earlier suddenly have shared memories.
That's what happened on our 67th CSH journey, and it's something I want to create more of.
Not necessarily reunion trips.
That feeling.
Because years from now, you may remember the cathedral or castle you visited.
But you're also going to remember the people who were standing beside you when something unexpected—or hilarious—happened.
There's nothing wrong with wanting the beautiful photograph.
But I want more for you than a checklist of European landmarks.
I want you to remember what you did there.
Maybe you learned to waltz in Vienna.
Maybe you made a pretzel in Passau.
Maybe you found a Christmas Market stall you couldn't stop talking about.
Maybe you spent an evening laughing with people you hadn't even met a week earlier.
Those are the moments that become stories.
And even if another traveler eventually sails the same river or follows the same itinerary, they won't have exactly the same journey.
The particular combination of people, experiences, conversations and unexpected moments only happens once.
It will never happen quite that way again.
In the episode, I also introduce the first two journeys we've selected for the Europe Unveiled Signature collection.
We're sailing with AmaWaterways from Budapest to Vilshofen beginning November 10, 2027 on a City Escapes itinerary that's quite different from the typical Danube river cruise.
We'll have more time in many destinations, including two full days in Vienna, plus a much broader selection of included experiences. On some days, travelers can choose from as many as six included onshore experiences.
That might mean traditional sightseeing one day and a Viennese waltz lesson, museum visit, underground lake experience, pretzel-making in Passau or another cultural, active or culinary experience the next.
There's even an included dinner and interactive classical music experience at Vienna's House of Strauss.
It's still the Danube.
But it's a very different way to experience it.
More time. More choices. More immersive experiences.
And that's exactly why I chose it.
Our second journey is particularly personal.
Beginning November 29, 2028, we'll travel with AmaWaterways from Frankfurt to Nuremberg on one of its newer Christmas Market itineraries.
Bryan and I didn't simply visit Germany.
We lived there.
I spent more than 10 years living in Germany. Bryan was stationed there with the U.S. Army, our family lived there together, and some of my favorite memories of Europe are tied to that chapter of our lives.
And Christmas in Germany is something I've never forgotten.
The wooden stalls. The lights. The ornaments. The food. The smell of Glühwein and Christmas treats. And walking through a Christmas Market after dark when everything seems to glow.
I'm not simply excited to send travelers there.
I'm excited to take them there.
You don't have to consider yourself a “group traveler” to enjoy traveling this way.
You may simply want the reassurance of knowing someone has thought through the details.
You may love meeting other travelers but still value your independence.
You may have been waiting years for a spouse or friend to finally say yes to Europe.
Or perhaps you'd simply rather experience the journey with a community around you than do it completely on your own.
So instead of only asking:
“Do I want to take this cruise?”
I want you to ask something a little different:
“Is this how I want to experience Europe?”
Because ultimately, that's what Europe Unveiled Signature Journeys are about.
The goal isn't to see the most. It's to come home feeling like you really experienced where you've been.

In busy European river cruise ports, several ships may need to use the same docking location.
That means ships can dock side by side, a practice commonly called rafting.
If your ship is on the outside, you may even walk through another river cruise ship to reach shore. And if another ship is docked directly beside your stateroom, your beautiful river view may temporarily become a view of your new neighbors.
It’s completely normal.
And it’s one of those river cruise quirks that’s much less surprising when you know about it before you go.
One of the questions first-time river cruisers often ask is whether they should book a stateroom on the port or starboard side of the ship.
For most European river cruises, there really isn’t a “best” side.
Scenery appears on both sides of the river, docking positions vary, and during spectacular scenic stretches such as the Rhine Gorge or Wachau Valley, the best place to enjoy the scenery may be the Sun Deck or panoramic lounge where you can see both sides.
Rather than choosing your stateroom based primarily on port versus starboard, consider the stateroom category, deck, location on the ship, what is above and below you, and the type of window or balcony.
Sometimes your river cruise ship will dock within easy walking distance of the historic center.
Other times, transportation may be needed to reach the destination you came to explore.
Docking assignments can also change based on availability, river traffic, local operations, river conditions, and other circumstances.
That’s particularly important to remember on embarkation day or when exploring independently.
Always check the most current docking information and pay attention to your Cruise Manager’s daily briefing.
Your ship is essentially a floating hotel...
But unlike your hotel at home, this one can leave without you.
Yes.
River cruise itineraries can change because of water levels, lock issues, weather, port availability, navigation conditions, and other operational circumstances.
And unlike an ocean cruise ship that may sometimes change course to avoid weather, a river cruise ship cannot simply sail around an unnavigable section of the Rhine or Danube.
That distinction has been particularly important during the unusually difficult river conditions experienced during the summer of 2026.
Historically low water levels on portions of the Rhine and Danube have resulted in significant itinerary changes for some travelers, including motorcoach transfers, ship swaps, missed ports, and, in some cases, canceled departures.
But conditions can vary significantly by river section, ship, cruise line, and itinerary.
That’s why one traveler can report that their cruise is operating normally while another sailing on the same river is being modified.
Some river cruise lines offer several included excursion choices in a destination, possibly including different activity levels, cycling tours, walking tours, or food and wine experiences.
Others may include a standard sightseeing experience while offering specialty excursions at an additional cost.
When comparing river cruise lines, don’t stop at the words “excursions included.”
Look at what is actually included and ask yourself:
Are these the experiences I want?
And remember...
Included doesn’t mean mandatory.
You paid for a river cruise.
Not summer camp.
Sometimes the best decision is to skip the excursion, find a café, and explore Europe your own way.
River cruising makes traveling through Europe easier, but exploring historic Europe can still involve more walking than first-time cruisers expect.
Cobblestones, uneven streets, stairs, hills, gangways, and walking tours are all part of the experience.
Rather than going deeply into the subject here, I’ve created a complete guide:
Probably less during the day than some first-time river cruisers imagine.
A lot of sailing may happen overnight while you sleep. Sometimes the ship continues downriver while you’re on an excursion and meets you at another docking location later in the day.
And not every mile of the Rhine or Danube is lined with castles and vineyards.
These are real, working European waterways.
You’ll see beautiful villages, vineyards, and historic landscapes...
But you may also pass working ports, highways, cargo ships, modern cities, and industrial areas.
Then come those extraordinary stretches of scenic sailing, perhaps through the Rhine Gorge or Wachau Valley, when you’ll understand exactly why those photographs made you want to take a river cruise in the first place.
When your Cruise Manager tells you scenic sailing is coming...
Be there.
Not...
• Why arriving in Europe before embarkation day can give you valuable breathing room
• What to consider when choosing international flight connections
• How river cruise excursion reservations work and why every cruise line is different
• The difference between included, optional, and additional-cost excursions
• Why a “Gentle” excursion may still involve considerable walking
• Why you don't need to “win river cruising” by filling every available hour
• Why final payment dates can vary dramatically between cruise lines and fares
• Why you should never wait until the last minute to make final payment
• What to do when an airline changes your flight schedule
• What to review during the final months and weeks before departure
• What first-time river cruisers can expect on embarkation day
• Why your stateroom may not be available until the afternoon, even if you can drop your luggage earlier
• What it means when river cruise ships are “rafted” together
• And how to know which Planning Season you're in right now
One of the most important things to remember after booking your river cruise is that you do not need to plan constantly from the day you book until the day you leave.
There will be Active Planning Seasons, when it's time to book flights, choose excursions, make payments, check documents, or prepare for departure.
There will also be Quiet Planning Seasons, when there may be nothing you have to do.
Those quieter months are a great time to learn about your ports of call, read guidebooks, listen to river cruise podcasts, watch destination videos, join river cruise communities, and simply enjoy anticipating your trip.
Eventually, all of those Planning Seasons lead to the best one...
Your Travel Season.
Booking your flights doesn't necessarily mean they'll stay exactly the same until departure.
Airlines routinely make schedule changes, particularly when airfare is booked many months in advance.
If you receive a schedule-change notification, don't panic, but don't ignore it either.
Review the entire itinerary. Make sure your connection is still reasonable, your dates are correct, and every flight segment is still there.
As Sonia says throughout this episode:
Every confirmation. Every time.
River cruise final-payment deadlines vary by cruise line, fare, and promotion. Your balance could be due well in advance of your sailing, while another booking may have a deadline closer to departure.
Know the deadline for your specific reservation and don't wait until the last minute to pay.
Large cruise payments can sometimes trigger a fraud alert, exceed a card's transaction limit, or simply fail to process on the first attempt. Building in a little extra time gives you the opportunity to resolve a problem before your reservation is at risk.

Absolutely. Many river cruise ports are located within walking distance of town centers, making independent exploration easy. You can also visit museums, restaurants, attractions, or sites that may not be offered as cruise line excursions.
Yes. Many travelers choose to book independent guides or private tours in certain destinations. Just be sure you understand transportation options, allow extra time, and know the ship's all-aboard time.
Generally, river cruise lines will wait for ship-sponsored excursions that are delayed. They may not wait for independently arranged tours or activities, so planning carefully is essential.

You have more flexibility, but that doesn’t mean you need to add more destinations.
Often, staying longer in fewer places creates a richer and more enjoyable experience.
That two-hour train ride on paper?
It can easily take half a day or more once you factor in:
Packing
Checking out of your hotel
Getting to the train station
Arriving early
The train ride itself
Getting to your next hotel
Checking in
Getting settled
This is one of the biggest reasons travelers often underestimate how much they can realistically fit into a trip.
Instead of trying to check off as many cities as possible, consider choosing a well-located home base and exploring the surrounding region.
Examples:
Florence for Tuscany
Munich for Bavaria
Strasbourg for Alsace
Split for the Dalmatian Coast
Lisbon for Sintra and Cascais
This approach gives you more depth, less stress, and a much more enjoyable trip.
River cruising allows you to visit multiple destinations without constantly packing and unpacking.
Your hotel moves with you.
Meals and excursions are largely included.
And you wake up somewhere new almost every day.
It’s one of the most efficient and enjoyable ways to experience Europe.
The best Europe itinerary is not the one with the most stops.
It’s the one that feels right for you.
More cities does not always equal a better trip.
Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is slow down.
