Films For a Cause is an online fundraising movie event featuring the premiere of Hope's Legacy. This episode includes a delightful chat with Douglas B. Maddox, the director and producer, on the making of the movie which deals with Lizzie’s strong emotions after the death of her grandmother; her obligations to the farm and her horses, and an upcoming three-day eventing competition. In this episode, Lisa and Julianne continue the series, Conversations with the EQUUS Herd. After a chat to catch up on the current social situation, the episode features interviews with Candace Carrabus, Linda Sheehan and Janet Winters from the EQUUS Film and Arts Fest at the Kentucky Horse Park. 

Candace Carrabus writes from the Lincoln County, Missouri farm she shares with her husband and daughter. A scoliosis diagnosis at age 11 changed her life. A horse lover from a young age, she signed up for riding lessons and learned much more than posting trot. With quiet power, horses provided comfort and a sympathetic ear, never judging or poking fun at her cumbersome back brace. Those years, though often difficult, taught Candace the value of persistence, the healing power of believing in oneself, and how strength can be gained through kindness. Her stories are imbued with the irresistible wonder, mystery, and solace her equine friends have provided.

Linda Brown Sheehan is a lifelong animal enthusiast, and supporter of charitable organizations specializing in the prevention of cruelty to animals.   The experiences and observations she has volunteering in animal rescue provide ample material for her artwork.   Linda and her husband Eric, both from Iowa, have two sons and two dogs. The family currently lives in Plano, Texas. Linda's book, The Story of Bubbles, was written to benefit Becky's Hope Horse Rescue in Frisco, Texas.

Janet Winters fell in love with mysteries and horses thanks to Trixie Belden. After reading Trixie's first adventure, in which she and Honey cantered down the bridle path to solve a mystery, Janet was hooked. Then came Agatha, Sir Author, Rex, Daphne, and of course Dorothy L., who inspired her to name her horses after characters in the Lord Peter Wimsey series. Janet was encouraged to write after winning a fifth grade essay contest which was actually published in the local newspaper. After that, her writing took a deviant turn to ad copy, press releases, and commercials, for which she snagged a Matrix Award.
After thirty years of convincing people to buy things they didn't need, she turned to her real love...mysteries. She penned her first novel "Murder at Morgan House", introducing amateur sleuth Ivy Snow, her psychic teenage daughter Jaycee, and potential paramour Detective John Garrett. In this episode, Lisa and Julianne take a quick break from the series, Conversations with the EQUUS Herd, to speak with Gretchen Lida, contributing writer for Horse Network.
Gretchen is an essayist and an equestrian, with work appearing in The Washington Post, Brevity, The Rumpus, The Washington Independent Review of Books, The Los Angeles Review of  Books, Plaid Horse Magazine, Horse Nation and many others. She teaches composition in Illinois, lives in Wisconsin, sometimes lives on Nantucket Island and is still a Colorado Native.

Gretchen brings a sense of normalcy for "horse people" in this time of uncertainty through her series of articles for Horse Network. From articles on the "less than half-truths" behind the familiar t-shirt saying, "My Horse is My Therapist" to the joys of riding an opinionated mare, her writing draws the reader into a world where being a horse girl and knowing a horse girl is something to be proud of. As she states regarding the benefits of the positive side of the stereotypes involved,
"Power. Or, better yet, empowerment. So, to those who quake at the thought of a horse girl, I say, “Good. Be scared.” That’s right. Beware the horse girl. The word beware comes from an old English term that referred to prudence, being wary, or a sense of vigilance. It meant to watch carefully, and with caution. And it is true horse girls are a thing to watch, a thing to be careful of, and a thing to fill you with awe.

In this Zoom call, the conversation between Gretchen, Lisa and Julianne includes flashbacks to the EQUUS Film Festival in December, favorite films from the fest, reviews of some of the films on The EQUUS Channel, and personal stories of favorite "horsey memories." They also stray into the current hot topic of how to cope with isolation during the pandemic.

In a personal essay for Horse Network, Gretchen sums it up. “Still, the need for quiet and ceremony is deeply human. For me, that need for ritual and contemplation is fulfilled in another building. One that smells more like timothy than incense and that requires a different brand of footwear finery. I am a member of the church of Equus.”

My love for equines & animals in general began as a young girl, swimming in the creek behind our house and catching carp & tadpoles (my mom had to ask me to return the living aquatic beasts frequently to the creek - I had them in a bucket next to my bed). I consider all living things to have the same importance as humans - I really hate to even kill flies in our horse barn although my horses certainly don’t agree here. On to the equine history....My equestrian activities began with riding english, dabbling in local shows & riding in the Wayne-Dupage Hunt (a drag pack - not fox hunting) club. After some pretty bad wrecks & injuries to match I have jumped ship to enjoy western dressage & moseying’ on the trails with my husband Steve. I am a classically trained oil painter & photographer (I still think in ‘film’ setting) I love to meld different animals & subjects into what could be perceived as a ‘traditional setting’. My brain works akin to Dr. Seuss - designing & creating in my mind a very free, no rules, no box sort of outcome - quirky & eccentric?, perhaps. About Cindy Erkel and the Billy and Blaze project:
One of those small bright spots of the late 1930’s was the first published work of C.W. Anderson, Billy and Blaze. This little book started Mr. Anderson on his prolific book publishing career and set the stage for many happy hours of reflection for children around the world. The hope and triumph of this gentle story contributed positively to the greater universal needs the times demanded. As such, the Billy and Blaze series has become a classic, cherished by those who grew up wishing the pictures of Billy and his bay pony, Blaze, could come to life. As a published children's book author, Cynthia Rogers Erkel took the opportunity to embellish the gentle story with the other people in Billy’s life whom must have existed somewhere between the lines. In order to make a film, the story needed to be expanded with dignity, staying as true to the spirit of the original as possible. The C. W. In this episode, Lisa and Julianne introduce listeners to artist Kody Bundy and filmmakers Karen Sailer and Charles Perry. The panel-style interview was recorded during the EQUUS Film and Arts Fest at the Kentucky Horse Park in December.

Artist Kody Bundy creates her artwork with knives and brushes. According to Kody, "Growing up on the rolling prairie of my fathers farm, I had a deep appreciation for horses.  When I wasn't spending time riding or just hanging out with them I was drawing them. After high school graduation I put away drawing and began my life working and training horses. During the Western Art Week in 2015 at Great Falls, MT I first observed a Scratchboard artist and was amazed by the detail she could achieve by using the tools she used to create her artwork. The panels I use are layered with white china clay and are airbrushed with either black India Ink or a choice of colored India Inks.  Then the  fun begins.  I use razor blades/ X-acta knives, fiberglass brushes and nibs to remove the ink to engrave my image on the panel.  Colored artwork is layered with ink using a paint brush. Imagine seeing a single blade of grass or a whisker in 3-D.  Because that is what it is, etched in clay."

Karen Sailer, born in 1962, grew up in Germany and has lived in Ibiza, Spain since 1995. When asked when she was 14, what she wanted to be, she replied: veterinarian, textile designer, landscape architect, writer and filmmaker. She studied veterinary medicine, was chief designer of a carpet company in Nepal and then became Ibiza‘s most successful landscape architect. As a modern medicine woman, who has learned from the great wisdom keepers of our earth, she has cultivated her gift of turning deserts into paradises into soul-rejuvenating work with people and horses. Karen Sailer has often shed skin and, with the journey back to her past life as a warrior in 16th century France, opened a new chapter in her eventful life. The publication of a 12-minute short film in February 2019 about her experience with the old equestrian figure and the decision to openly and authentically share her magical journey on social media has suddenly made her a public person, which has been breathlessly followed by thousands of people.

Producer, director, and cinematographer Charles Perry creates films that explore race relations, political issues, and interpersonal perspectives. His current film, ‘The Black Cowboy’ takes you into the world of African-American history and culture that is little known. Most of us know the cowboy as a gun toting white man like John Wayne. But the Hollywood portrayal of the Wild West is a whitewashed version of reality. It is thought that, on some Texas trails, about 25% of cowboys were black.The Black Cowboy is a look at a little known chapter in the history of the United States. It is a story that illuminates the often overlooked people who contributed to the building of the ideal that is the American dream.
