Welcome to Episode 53 of Endurance Horse Podcast.
April 24th of 2021 was the day I turned 50 and I wanted it to be a memorable occasion. So Jim and I loaded up a rented van with two of our sons and our German Shepard and headed out our Wisconsin driveway bound for St. Joseph Missouri as our destination. We were on a mission to visit two museums, one way station and also to present the National Pony Express Museum with the 16 x 20 large wooden plaque engraved with the names of 500 riders in our Pony Express 1900 Mile Challenge.
The Pony Express 1900 Mile Challenge has been popular with our listeners and the riders of the WARHORSE Endurance Challenges as we help to promote and preserve the Pony Express National Museum. We believe that the Pony Express Museum is a unique part of equine history and one that is deserving of preservation.
We hope you enjoy a stroll down this very unique part of equine history where horses and riders were the main characters in the story. | Lynn Atcheson and Banner - Tevis 2021 | 23 Dec 2021 | 00:25:53
Episode 51 of Endurance Horse Podcast Lynn Atcheson & Banner Tevis 2021 created by: Christina Hyke December 23, 2021 We are soon wrapping up our 4th year of YEAR of ENDURANCE HORSE PODCAST and trotting on strongly into 2022, year 5! Endurance Horse Podcast first aired in March of 2018, we have averaged 12 episodes per year and have stayed free and commercial free for our listeners. And most importantly I hope Endurance Horse Podcast is known as a place on the airwaves that always champions the horse and rider no matter which place they come in. I know the AERC motto is To finish is to Win, though I believe to saddle up and to show up takes courage and I will always champion you for trying, for daring to place your heart and your horse at the starting line.
Wooohooo! Is all I can say about wrapping up the past 4 years of podcasting! We are at over 40,000 downloads! I honestly remember being in awe when we reached 256 downloads! It seems the podcast has filled a niche for riders who love to go the distance and spend time out in nature with their horses, those who love the process of conditioning, camping and making memories together. As my friend Mary Ellen always says, every mile a smile!
It is always a joy to get to talk with Tevis riders, and especially one that so many of our WARHORSE Endurance family were following on the Tevis 2021 online tracker. Can you imagine being 2 miles from the finish line and having to pull? That is what happened to our next guest, Lynn Atcheson of Washington State. Lynn’s horse, Banner has a distinctive look with his bright coloring and roached mane, I have admired his photos on facebook for sometime and all the beautiful images Lynn shares of him. I was surprised to learn that he is 21 years old! I was cheering for them watching the online tracker provided by Tevis. Their ride took a turn for the worse and the official miles they accomplished that day were just shy of 98. Can you imagine pulling that close to the finish line?
You are invited to listen in while Lynn and I chat about how she got into horses, endurance and her 2021 Tevis ride.

Welcome to Episode 45 of Endurance Horse Podcast Dr. Jay Mero- Winner of 2021 Haggin Cup Created by Christina Hyke on July 28th 2021
Maybe you were one of the many people tracking the progress of the Tevis Cup that was this past weekend, July 24th 2021 under the last full moon of July? This moon is called the Rider’s moon and it is under this moon that the annual Tevis Cup was to be ridden. For the 66th annual riding of the Tevis Cup riders had to deal once again with smoke from wildfires. In the next few episodes of Endurance Horse Podcast we will be sharing short interviews with some of those brave soles who saddled up and faced what is arguably one of the toughest endurance events in the equestrian world. Tevis is often called the Grand Daddy of them all and has even inspired events as far as Australia and the Tom Quilty Gold Cup.
Tevis, unlike the Quilty historically is held at the same venue from year to year and although there maybe some slight changes in trail, many of the milestones have remained the same since 1955. Although many think of the Tevis of a climbing ride, likely due to the world famous Cougar Rock images, there is actually, by the numbers roughly 17,000 feet of elevation gain and over 21,000 feet of elevation loss. As you will hear mentioned in several of the interviews, some keys to conditioning for Tevis are hills, hills and hills.
In this episode of Endurance Horse podcast I am honored to bring to you an interview with the 2021 Haggin Cup winner Dr. Jay Mero. For those of you new to the podcast or new to endurance, the Haggin Cup is arguably the most prestigious of north american endurance. Riders from around the world travel to auburn, CA to tread along this historic and as some say, magical trail.

| EPM the Master of Disguise Part 2 of 3 Dr. Sam Crosby | 20 Apr 2021 | 00:51:07 | |
Welcome to Episode 42 of Endurance Horse Podcast Stories of EPM & Dr. Sam Crosby, DVM Part 2 of a 3 part series Created by: Christina Hyke April 2021 Most difficult day of my life spurred me into creating a three part series on EPM.
In Part 2 of 3 episodes with a focus to shed light on EPM. Most horse owners that have even heard of EPM equate this disease as showing up as a horse with a wobbly or drunken hind end, though there are many small, red flags that show up long before a sudden onset of EPM. EPM is an infection of protozoa that attack the central nervous system of the end host, the horse. Some varieties of this protozoa tend more towards attacking the muscle, to learn more tune into this episode of Endurance Horse Podcast where we will hear two more stories from horse owners followed by an interview with Dr. Sam Crosby, DVM of Crosby Equine Services.
Sandy Patmore, Michigan USA Amy Maguire, USA Dr. Sam Crosby, DVM Oklahoma, USA Crosby Equine Service on Facebook Veterinarians Encouraging and Teaching VET Program American Association of Equine Practitioners Pathogenes Labs Testing Lab for EPM “Pathogenes is a small research laboratory with large ideas, located in Fairfield, Florida. We test samples, analyze data, and invent tools to diagnose and treat horses with neurodegenerative diseases including EPM, equine protozoal myeloencephalitis.”
We were blessed to get you a code for Karbo Combo probiotic, use this at the Karbo Store Website. I tried Karbo Combo for a follow up probiotic after Grace's treatment for EPM. Grace had a significant improvement with Karbo Combo and continues to be on it. We also tried Karbo Combo for JR, I did not notice any difference with this product. With JR we did see a big difference in him with SarStart as an aftercare follow up, and with Grace, not much difference on Sarstart. Each horse has it's own individual biome, and what benefits one greatly may not have a significant affect on the next horse. Before starting Karbo Combo, Grace could not back up straight, she was swinging her left hind leg significantly and backing up almost sideways. For Grace, after about three weeks on Karbo Combo we noticed a significant difference with her. She eats it readily, and she tends to be picky with powders etc, Karbo is a pellet and we plan to keep her on it for the rest of the year or longer. The Karbo Store gave us a one time use coupon code for our listeners to try Karbo Combo. We reached out to them because not only had other horse owners dealing with EPM had great things to say about Karbo Combo, so did Dr. Sam Crosby. It was at their recommendation that we gave Karbo a try and wanted to see if we would get get a better deal for you to try it at least once with your horses and see if it helps: Coupon Code for $10 off: EHP10

| UPDATES Virtual Events Interview with DAWN HAAS | 19 Apr 2020 | 00:52:05 | |
Welcome to Episode 38 of Endurance Horse Podcast
Created April 19th 2020
Interview with Dawn Haas of Appaloosa Distance Riding Association, Dawn tells her story of how she found endurance riding , helped create local trails and her a bit about her appaloosa horses.
It is a virtual Challenge based totally on the honor system, we trust you will track your miles and truly hope that you would share videos, photos and screen shots of your mileage to our WARHORSE 100 Mile Challenge FB Group. There is a small fee to cover the costs of shipping, design and creation of the medals (or for outside of the USA embroidered patches). We hope that you join us in this Challenge, share it with your friends and share your journey with us in the Facebook group. We have riders who I know will knock this out in one month by riding 25 miles or more per week. We also have drivers, even a mini! We have horses being walked lovingly by their owners because the horses are too young or too old to be ridden, so they are walking their horses by hand on the days they can. This goal is so customizable! We just wanted to connect with more riders, and cheer them on towards a truly milestone goal. I am loving hearing all the stories, moms riding with their children, husbands with their wife and older horses finding new purpose again. Won’t you join us? We know you know how to social distance in the best way possible, with your horse!

| THE FARM- Interview with Tracy Porter & Shirley May of Milton, WI | 20 Mar 2020 | 00:44:06 | |
Welcome to The Farm Interview with Shirley May & Tracy Porter Endurance Horse Podcast Hosted by Christina Hyke Created March 19th, 2020 I know it is a challenging Spring for those in North America, and for all of us across the world. Though I'd like to wish you all a Happy Spring, it is my hope that we can brighten your first day of spring! So the best laid plans of mice & men…… Episode 36 of Endurance Horse Podcast was to be on Ride Management, though the recent world health concerns put a damper on my plans to travel around getting several interviews with Ride Managers. I was able to do a few interviews, and just so happened to interview a few friends before the pandemic restricted all the movements and gatherings.
In Episode 36 we will hear from two great horsewomen, mother and daughter, Shirley May and Tracy Porter. We chat about how both of them got into horses, a bit about horse training and yes a little about endurance. Shirley and Tracy operate a 120 acre boarding facility in Milton, Wisconsin
It is my hope that you enjoy this episode getting to know this midwest horse trainer and her mother. And I hope it helps to take your mind away from current events, even if only for a few minutes. Shirley May Wisconsin, USA

| LONG FEATHER Racing - Also Milwaukee Art Museum & Veterans Light Up the Arts | 07 Mar 2020 | 00:39:00 | |
Welcome to the Long Feather Racing episode of Endurance Horse Podcast with The Milwaukee Art Museum & Veterans Light Up the Arts
Created February 27, 2020 Welcome to episode 35 of Endurance Horse Podcast!
This topic may seem to have little to do with endurance riding, we distance riders are often talking about riding the same horse over many miles, in this episode we talk to a father who manages a racing team that is comprised of his family members. Long Feather Racing Team stands tall among the many skilled teams who participate in Indian Relay Racing.
One rider, 3 horses and many team members comprise the team. Riders must mount bareback on their own power and relay onto three horses to win this race. Though swapping horses, high speeds and bareback seem to have little to do with endurance, I reached out to Richard Long Feather of Standing Rock Reservation to connect with him and listen in as shares his love of Indian Relay Racing.
It is funny how things come together if you track them backwards. As you may know, I had the idea for WARHORSE Endurance ride, that then also led me to loan an idea and name for a second ride to Laura to change the name and theme of her ride. I loaned her the name I had for another ride, Spirit Horse. Laura then spoke to people who gave her the idea to fund raise for an equine program at Rosebud Reservation- which brought me to purchasing the DVD, HORSE NATION, which helped me to find out about the Mankato ride, and the Wounded Knee ride, and then apparently FB suggested Long Feather Racing- and so I found Richard’s family & now Richard is on Endurance Horse Podcast.
Richard’s family works as a team traveling during the racing season covering many miles with typically six horses to care for. This sounded very familiar to the ride camp we all travel around to. I wanted to make a connection with Endurance Horse Podcast and this amazing family. As you can see, what started out as a short interview turned into much more as I found myself enjoying this man’s love for his horses and his home. I hope you all can forgive me as I learn the more technical side of recording. I think that we had a bad phone connection, though I hope you can listen long enough to see what a good horse connection we made. Sit back, hold on and enjoy the ride!

Welcome to Part 1 of 2 Focused on Rider Health Endurance Horse Podcast
Created February 3, 2020 Welcome to episode 32 of Endurance Horse Podcast! Rider health is the topic today & it has been a popular one, not surprising, all of us are riders & all have health to deal with. When it comes to rider health we are referring to an encompassing topic. Today we are chatting about everything from overcoming injures, dealing with illnesses, how horses are therapist and yes, some about riders fitness & emotional health. Guess what? SO many files were sent in I couldn't possibly fit them all into one episode, and believe it or not I am about to leave here in an hour to go do a second interview on this topic! Honestly I was hesitant to cover this topic, as I know some of it can be hard to hear. It maybe easier to trot through a ride camp world where we all just smile and wave at each other- and not be the tiniest bit aware of what could be going on in the body of the other rider--- though think about how much we pay attention to the health of the rider's horse. I hope this episode does a lot to remind us all that all riders have more to contend with than the weather, the horse and the trail.

Episode 63
Dr. Brian Bourquin of NOMV
Thank you for tuning in to this insightful episode of the Endurance Horse Podcast. We hope you found Dr. Brian's discussion on the unique challenges facing veterinarians and the work of Not One More Vet (NOMV) both enlightening and inspiring.
As equestrians, we have a special opportunity to support NOMV and show our appreciation for the dedicated professionals who care for our beloved animals. Whether it's by visiting nomv.org and contributing directly or by joining us in the Trail Blazer 100 Mile Challenge, every effort counts.
Remember, throughout the rest of March, let's make it a point to express our gratitude to the veterinarians who keep our horses healthy and happy. Consider sending a thank-you note, including a photo of your horse or pet, or even a small gift card to show your appreciation.
Together, let's make March the unofficial Veterinarian Appreciation Month for horse owners everywhere. Let's flood them with support and love, showing them just how much they mean to us and our animal companions.
Don't forget to sign up for the Trail Blazer 100 Mile Challenge at warhorseendurance.com and join fellow equestrians from across the USA and around the world in our efforts to support NOMV while conditioning ourselves and our horses.
Thank you for being a part of our community, and until next time, ride on with gratitude and appreciation.
RIDE FAR. RIDE WELL. RIDE OFTEN.

Welcome to Episode 27 of Endurance Horse Podcast Tevis Cup 2019 Part TWO
Created September 28, 2019
Welcome to episode 27 of Endurance Horse Podcast! We are working overtime this weekend to get this part two of Tevis 2019 out to you. You will hear some construction sounds at the beginning of this episode as Jim & I share with you the excitement we have of putting up our new barn. We hear from a rider who went to the educational ride that is hosted on the Tevis trail and you can hear about her experience to see if this is a trip you would like to take. We will hear more from more riders and a lot more from crew and from long time Endurance Podcast contributor Keisha Wood as she is both crew/volunteer helping to mark trail at Tevis 2019 . So sit back, hold on and enjoy the ride!
Some of the audios sent in were quite a bit longer than average, though I chose to share the extra audio, as it is full of good information, and it fits appropriately as this episode is about an extra lengthy ride.
Please have patience with Jim & I as we are quite giddy about finally getting our little barn built. I will be so happy to see all the horses peaking out of their stalls, I fully plan to after chores sit in my camping chair, eyes closed and listen to all the munching of hay. #happygirl

| TEVIS 2019 PART ONE | 28 Sep 2019 | 01:10:32 | |
Welcome to Episode 26 of
Endurance Horse Podcast Tevis Cup 2019 Part 1
Created September 27, 2019
Welcome to episode 26 of Endurance Horse Podcast where we will hear from not only the winner of Tevis 2019, though also from volunteers, crew and more riders! Did you know that the Tevis Cup, also known as the The Western States Trail Ride, has been held every year since 1955? This makes Tevis the most established modern day endurance ride in the world, possibly the universe. Tevis has been the inspiration for other such great rides as The Big Horn 100 and The Tom Quilty Gold Cup. It is amazing to me how one group of riders, with an idea can establish something so inspirational that has been standing the test of time for several decades, and that has inspired others to build on what was started by Wendell Robie and his friends.
Only roughly half (54%) of the people who toe the line to begin Tevis will complete it. The statistics at teviscup.org show that from 1955 until 2017 roughly 10,365 have started Tevis and only 5,615 had finished. To finish, is truly to win. I am equally inspired by those who did not finish, as I am by those who did, because it takes the same amount of courage to even attempt to finish and ride the Tevis. No one truly knows what may happen during a ride or how their day will go. We are grateful for those of you who send in an audio, whether you found your buckle at the end of the ride or not this time, thank you for including the listeners of Endurance Horse Podcast in your journey.
Of course, there was one horse rider team that did cross the finish line first and that was the young and talented Miss Sanoma Blakeley of Oregon. Sanoma crossed the finish line at 9:27 pm just ahead of a three time winner of the Tevis Cup. It is a testament to this young lady that her horse, RA Ares Bay, aka Goober pulsed down quickly and vetted out sound at the end of arguably the world’ toughest one day 100 mile endurance ride in the world. Sanoma has a proud heritage of endurance riding. Sanoma’s mother has 6 Tevis buckles, Sanoma’s father has 5 Tevis Buckles and Sanoma’s brother won the Haggin Cup in 2014 at the age of 15. As if that is not an interesting enough of a tale for you, Sanoma’s 2019 Tevis Cup champion, Goober, was found as a two year old on Craigslist, an add was offering him up as a free horse. Goober is her dad’s horse, and apparently earned the name Goober by his silly antics such as leading other horses around. Sanoma has said she has the greatest parents in the world, and the greatest horse, and who could argue with that? Let’s hear a brief recount of the Tevis 2019 journey from Sanoma herself, without further ado, I bring to you episode 26 of Endurance Horse Podcast, enjoy. The Wendell Robie trophy is awarded to horses who have five Tevis completions. If you know of a horse who has met these requirements and not received the award, please follow this link for more information. Wendell Robie Award. | Non-Traditional Endurance Horses | 22 Aug 2019 | 01:27:58
Welcome to Episode 24 of
Endurance Horse Podcast Created August 21, 2019
Hello and Welcome to Episode 24 of Endurance Horse Podcast! I’m Christina Hyke, an equine photographer based in Southern Wisconsin.
This episode is focused on the non traditional endurance horse. First, I wanted to share with you something I learned at the Midwest Horse Fair this year. I had a vendor booth there for my photography & it gave me a good segue to also share my love of distance riding with other riders. What I learned shocked me a little bit- here I was at an event that is plum full of riders from all over the Midwest- this is a 3 day horse fair in Madison Wisconsin that boasts over 300 educational clinics/seminars in three days, over 500 vendors and typically sees over 61,000 attendees. At this horse owner filled event - most (as in likely over 70%) of the people I talked with about endurance had no idea what it was. Let that sink in. At a horse fair. Horse people did not know what endurance is. The second thing I learned was that when I met riders who did know what endurance was- they thought it was a west coast only sport. Even though there are 56 rides hosted in the Midwest Region.
The third thing I learned was that the riders who did know what endurance was - did not think they could do it because they did not own an Arabian. Some people also felt they were too old, that the sport is for those under 25.
This podcast is to encourage those riders who maybe thinking of trying distance riding- that you can do it with any sound horse that you condition up well. Some breeds of horses, generally, fair better in higher temperatures/humidity than others and some horse breeds in general do have naturally lower heart rates- though I would like to tell you that here are some horse owners that are riding a non traditional breed in endurance and they are loving it.
To confirm that the Arabian & the half Arabian are the go to horse in the sport I reached out to Mike Maul & AERC. Here are the 2018 numbers of breeds entered at AERC rides. Thank you Mike for providing the numbers & thank you AERC office for always being so helpful on the phone or by emails.
It is easy to see by the statistics Mike Maul so kindly sent to me that Arabian & half Arabian horses are not just seemingly the dominant breed in endurance- they surely out number the rest, easily. However, there are many great qualities to other breeds & this inspiration for episode 24 is to encourage you to try the breed you already have or the one you love.
I am sharing as the first audio in this episode, the before/during and after of my little 13 year old mare’s first LD with me, just over a week ago on August 10th.
I followed a conditioning plan, a few hiccups along the way (hoof abscess) Though much training & prayers- we got there.
I’m sharing Grace’s update on this episode because she was basically a love baby. She is by our Trakehner Karino’s Fire & our of our paint mare- Baily 💖 we intended Grace to maybe be shown in dressage- or trail ride. Certainly never pictured her as an endurance prospect. Though here I am, sharing with you the audio of our non traditional horse, a much adored mare, a big puppy dog personality.....without further ado, here is my emotional moment out somewhere between mile 21/22 when I knew that she was going to finish strong.
Thank you Grace for such an enjoyable ride- and all the rides we rode to condition to get to this point. Thanks for being the horse that added to my record & carried that 25 miles closer to my 1,000 mile goal. Here’s Grace…..as a few hours young filly. Am sharing this image of Jim walking with her for the first time, as he has been by my side all of the way, and also because this is how I kept seeing her on my ride, that is part of what caused emotion to swell, the other part that got me was the song “Flawless” that kept playing in my mind. It has the verse of “Grace, Grace, God’s Grace….” And I felt that it truly was the prayers that helped her abscess heal in time for the ride. So there was that to make me emotional at mile 21, her as a baby and also the fact that the conditioning plan had worked. I knew this was the right ride for her to begin. Grace settled into her campsite August 9, 2019. She is amazing. Love this little mare so much.

Part Two The Tom Quilty Gold Cup 2019 Episode of Endurance Horse Podcast Created August 15, 2019
Hello and Welcome to Episode 23 of Endurance Horse Podcast! I’m Christina Hyke, an equine photographer based in Southern Wisconsin. Since the beginning of Endurance Horse Podcast, Australia has been a part of the podcast. And one of the most wonderful things about the podcast is its ability to connect riders from all parts of the world. It is through those connections that I first learned of the Tom Quilty Gold Cup, a one day, 100 mile endurance ride based in Australia and inspired by the Tevis Cup.
*If you are new to endurance riding, you may hear different riders were first- that is because there is are weight divisions with placings as well as a Jr. rider division. The TQ 2019 had an amazing story in that Jolene Cole placed first HW rider & BC, along side her daughter, Emma, who was also first place Jr and BC. Flame, the horse that Emma was riding is from the same line of Chip Chase Sadaqa that Emma's grandfather, Peter Cole, rode to a Quilty win many years ago. This family has endurance legacy running in their veins! Thank you Emma and Jolene for sharing your journey & history, what a dream come true for you and your daughter. In this episode of the podcast we are going to hear from the dauntless crew of Marvel Endurance, and yes, Kat- I caught that 'End Game' reference in your audio ;) (Marvel fan girl over here too)

It is through those connections that I first learned of the Tom Quilty Gold Cup, a one day, 100 mile endurance ride based in Australia and inspired by the Tevis Cup.
Sydney, Australia- April 5th 1966, a hotel was the location for a gathering of 23 riders who were meeting to discuss the possibility of Australia having a one day, 100 mile ride of it’s own. In that room, was back in 1966 the 23 people agreed and formed a committee to create a ride formatted after the Tevis Cup held across the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the United States. The Tevis had held its first ride in 1955, a decade prior to the formation of the Tom Quilty Gold Cup.
In celebration of the 53rd running of the Quilty, I would like to welcome Bob Sample to the podcast. Bob has a long history with the Quilty. His family has four generations of riders winning several Tom Quilty Gold Cups, Bob among them. Bob has been kind enough to send us a brief summary of the Quilty to kick off episode 22. The BIG HORN Episode of Endurance Horse Podcast Episode 21
Welcome to The Big Horn 100 episode of Endurance Horse Podcast Created July 27/28th 2019 (yes I pulled an all nighter again Daryl Owen)
Hello and Welcome to episode 21 of Endurance Horse Podcast! I’m Christina Hyke, an equine photographer based in Southern Wisconsin Today is July 27th, 2019.
When I learned that both Bridget and Dante were headed to the Big Horn 100 it inspired me to dedicate this episode of Endurance Horse Podcast to the Big Horn 100. The Big Horn 100 predates the creation of the AERC, American Endurance Ride Conference, that is an impressively long running ride! If you have been doing endurance very long, chances are you have heard of the Big Horn 100.
Shell, Wyoming is the base camp of the legendary Big Horn 100 mile, 1 day ride. Twice this ride has been host to the Race of Champions, and a champion you must be to ride from the elevation of 4,000 feet rising to the climb of 10,000 feet elevation. The Big Horn is a single loop of some of the most challenging, rugged and beautiful trail that America has to offer. It has been told to me by more than one rider that the difficulty of this trail rivals that of the Tevis Cup. I, personally, cannot say, as I have not ridden either trail, though I feel honored to share the stories from this trail with you, and maybe some of you are hearing about this ride for the first time and will hear the call of the Big Horn Mountains and take up the challenge to ride through climbing mountains, wild flowers and wild weather. Can you hear it? The Big Horn is calling you.
This year Big Horn 100 was managed by Cindy Collins. Cindy loves this ride and from all the good feedback I have seen online and in the files that have been sent to the podcast, the riders truly love Cindy and the Big Horn- the descriptions given have surely made the Big Horn a ride to aspire to and one to never forget. I am thankful to each of the riders who took the time to share their audio from Big Horn 2019. One of my favorite audios is from a rider traveled all the way from Maryland to see the Big Horn, one of her bucket list rides, get checked off of her list. Peggy Thompson has been riding endurance longer than the current AERC website has been keeping records. Peggy will share her journey on the 50 mile endurance ride at the Big Horn 2019, though before she does, here is a short history of the Big Horn.
Greybull, Wyoming, 1970 was the setting for a meeting of the Canyon Cavaliers Saddle Club. It was during this meeting that local rider, Dale Perkins mentioned an article he had read about a 100 mile, 1 day ride that traversed over the Sierra Mountains in California. The beloved Big Horn mountain was right in the backyard of the Canyon Cavaliers Saddle Club and Dale said that there was no reason why there couldn’t be a ride like one that hosted here, over the club’s much loved Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming.
The idea was well received by the club, though they needed help to create such a ride. They sought out advice from a Laramie veterinarian who they had heard had actually ridden in the Western States 100 Mile One Day ride, also known as the Tevis Cup. The young veterinarian Dr. David Nicholson agreed to travel to Greybull and share his insight into what it would take to manage a 100 mile, 1 day endurance ride in the Big Horn Mountains. And, thus, with a good idea, much homework and planning, the Big Horn 100 Mile, Inc. was formed, Tom Van Gelder was elected first president and created The Big Horn 100, Inc into a 501 c3 non-profit. So there you have it, in the fall of 1970 the concept of the Big Horn 100 began and the organization of the 501 c3 called the Big Horn 100, Inc. was established in 1971. The AERC, American Endurance Ride Conference was established in 1972.

Endurance Horse Podcast - Episode 19 Welcome to Episode 19 of the Endurance Horse Podcast
Publishing on July 1st 2019.
The weather through May/June for Wisconsin was a little wet, though mostly beautiful. Today we are welcoming in July with some hotter weather and a threat of storms for a week! Just yesterday high winds caused a large tree to fall across our driveway, and also our lean to to blow over onto it’s back! With the help of two ropes, Jim & I on the ends of them, and three strong kiddos on the backside of the lean to we where able to muscle it over. Farm kids are good kids :) In episode 19 you will hear from a Montana rider, Joy Kinion, with her first time sending in to the podcast. I had contacted Joy, not knowing that she and Bridget had a connection and it was neat to learn that it was actually Joy’s daughter who had came along to the Fort Howes ride to watch Bridget’s daughter! Mom’s helping moms! I encourage you if you use Instagram to follow Bridget @thismomrides
It is winter in New Zealand & we will hear from two of our favorite Kiwis, Daryl Owen and Jenny Chandler and how winter is going for them there! Erin Glassman shares her experience of her first 100 and Brooke Spears shares about her very recent first 50 in Texas. I love all the stories that got sent in for this episode (what’s not to love?) Dawn Kerr’s audio has some very intriguing family ties to Tevis history to it, and somehow cows keep showing up in this podcast in Dawn’s post and one other…I think I have heard of two endurance riders who actually had taught cows to ride around the farm when they were young girls! And last, though certainly not least! One of my favorite Marvel Endurance riders from Down Under, Adriana Sardoni, gives us an update before she heads for the Tom Quilty Cup. best of luck to you and Victoria! I do believe that Jenny Chandler, Victoria and Adriana are going to do a meet up at the Quilty so we all look forward to hearing from them later in July!

| Episode 18 ENDURANCE HORSE PODCAST- Maiden Rides | 01 Jun 2019 | 01:19:25 | |
Endurance Horse Podcast - Episode 18
Welcome to Episode 18 of the Endurance Horse Podcast!
"Maiden Rides" In this episode you will hear of first time rides at 25/50 and 100 miles. Publishing on June 1st 2019
It is May in Wisconsin, and the weather has been absolutely beautiful, mostly because we are SO happy it quit raining! The trails are gorgeous, the horses are all shedded out, humming birds are at the feeders and fluffy youngsters are waddling along beside their momma & poppa goose parents! Today Jim & I went out on a 4 mile hike with the kiddos & saw two very fluffy sandhill crane babies strolling along with their parents, as well as too many young geese to count. Spring is certainly here and summer is just around the bend. In episode 18 you will hear from one of our Australian friends as she recounts her first time ever riding a 50 mile (80k), you will also hear in the podcast for the first time New Zealand rider, Jane Ferguson as she shares of her adventures into her first 100 mile ride and how a mid to back of the pack horse progressed to 100 miles (160k), Tara Leroy does an interview with Kim Jaye as she recounts her (very recent) first ever novice ride of 12 miles (20k), Tennessee Lane discusses the importance of conditioning more than just muscles and also a bit about how she achieved her goals at the recent Mount Carmel XP. I give an update on my Gracie Girl & her trip to the vet hospital for a check up.
Without further ado, I bring to you episode 18 of Endurance Horse Podcast, may you be encouraged, inspired and find a few riders you can relate to or at the very least, laugh with! Please let me know how you are enjoying the podcast by sending us an email. Thank you for indulging me while I go on about Grace, you know how it is when someone lets you talk about your horse....I literally can go on and on about her

| Episode 15 ENDURANCE HORSE PODCAST - CREWING | 20 Feb 2019 | 01:44:16 | |
Endurance Horse Podcast - Episode 15 Welcome to Episode 15 of the Endurance Horse Podcast! Publishing on 20th of February 2019 It is nearing the end of February and I am happy to bring to you a new episode of Endurance Horse Podcast. In this episode, Crewing, or depending on where you live, also known as strapping is a common theme woven throughout the various stories in this episode of Endurance Horse Podcast, and as you will hear in story by Carrie Baris, the endurance and ride and tie community and how it cares for each other does not end at ride camp when the trailers all head back home. Carrie’s story shows us the love and heart of the community that is endurance horse community. The bonds formed in all levels of endurance often become friendships that go far outside of the line where ride camp ends.
To prepare the intro for Episode 15 I searched the definition of crew/crewing and strapping. I will spare you the definitions, they really didn’t fit. Other words that I thought of were family…that did not exactly fit either. Then I searched for the word minister, “To attend to the needs of someone, to give care or serve” & that definition fit perfectly.
Without further ado, I bring to you episode 15 of Endurance Horse Podcast, may you laugh, cry, learn and be inspired. Endurance Horse Podcast Want to connect & find more content including photos? Hello, this is Chris, I hope you enjoyed riding along with us on this virtual loop. If this were an actual ride, we would be likely riding into our first hold right about now and many of us being helped out by our family and crew. This episode was to be about crewing, though one thing was highlighted to me from all the audios I listened to and edited. No horse is easy, we all suffer loss, most of us experience healing through horses and many of us are blessed to have found friends who crew for us in our actual life. Just knowing they are there, waiting to pick us up if everything goes sideways means a lot. A distance ride is much like life, Courtney, I think there is a sermon in there somewhere….. Much love & happy trails to you all. May your stirrups always be the same length and your boots stay dry! Until next time, BYE!

| Episode 14 ENDURANCE HORSE PODCAST - HAPPY NEW YEAR!! | 20 Jan 2019 | 01:17:16 | |
Endurance Horse Podcast - Episode 14 Episode 14 of the Endurance Horse Podcast is being published the 20th of January 2019. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRIAN! (best brother EVER) And Happy Birthday to DARBY, our sweetheart German Shepard.
WELCOME to the Second YEAR of ENDURANCE HORSE PODCAST! Wooohooo! That is so awesome! We are at over 5,000 downloads between Podbean and iTunes, I honestly remember being in awe when we reached 256 downloads! It seems the podcast has filled a niche for riders.
It is officially 20th of January, only by a few minutes, I stayed up late to get this podcast out to you! Sometimes, a girl has to do what a girl has to do- and that sometimes means the only quiet time in the house is after everyone, including the dogs, have gone to sleep! This time I admit, I think it is pretty neat to publish the podcast on my little brother's birthday. Cool that I still get to call him my little brother even though he is WAY taller than I am. It is so exciting when we get to hear from young riders in the sport and in this episode we will hear from a young rider in southern Wisconsin who rides the trails with her awesome Momma & Ride Manager, we will hear for the first time from two Florida young riders who have a great support team around them in their families and in their 4H Club. In Episode 14 we have some nail bitter stories from two of our long time listeners, Jenny Chandler (New Zealand) and Darice Whyte (Canada). We will also hear from rider, blogger, Audrey Hager from May the Horse be with You. And, if you are reading this Courtney, Jim blames you for my interest in at least trying a short RT at least once!
Please do check out the links provided in the show notes as they have some great resources, whether you’d like to hear the Templeton Thompson song that Courtney sang through the woods, if you’d like to check out the Ride & Tie website or if you are interested in learning more about 4H Clubs, or maybe you’d like to read more stories by Darice Whyte at Twisted Tales, and read more stories by Audrey Hager, you can follow the links and get more content!
I also included flyers to the midwest rides that were mentioned, though I don’t know how long those links will last as the new 2019 flyers will likely replace them. As always, life is a journey, enjoy the ride! Send me some audio files and remember it’s as much about the journey as it is the destination.
