Lorna lectures to both doctors and nurses about nutrition for Endometriosis including to specialist Endometriosis surgeons, she also speaks to the public, patients in hospitals and charity support groups. Lorna’s published work includes an evidence-based peer reviewed case analysis chapter on nutrition for Endometriosis, thyroid and hormone health – the link to this book in available in the show notes.

EF#21: How Endometriosis Affects Fertility with Lizzie Alexander10 Mar 202100:26:19

For the first episode in Season 2, and as its Endometriosis Awareness Month, I wanted to talk to you all about how your fertility can be affected by Endometriosis. This is not to scare you, but to present you with what is known and understood, so that you can then understand why certain actions to improve your health and fertility are recommended.

Medical knowledge of Endometriosis is still underway and continually evolving with new science – this is why in allopathic medicine there is no known cure. In functional medicine, there is an understanding of the systems that are affected by Endometriosis and this gives a roadmap of what steps and tools are needed for your body to heal and optimise your fertility.

In this episode I talk about:

  • Endometriosis statistics
  • What Endometriosis is and does to your body
  • Three direct ways your fertility is affected by Endo
  • Five indirect ways fertility is affected
  • The use of massage to improve blood flow, breakdown scar tissue and unblock fallopian tubes

EF#20: Five Functional Tests for Endo Fertility with Lizzie Alexander25 Nov 202000:45:11

It’s the last episode of the season!! This episode is all about how functional testing can be used to delve deeper into what is happening in the body. Integrative nutrition and lifestyle techniques can then be applied in a specific and focused manner that is unique to the individual, i.e. you! There is a lot you can tell from your symptoms, these will certainly give a picture of what is going on, but there are a variety of tests that a functional practitioner can use to understand where the imbalances are occurring in the body. In this episode I talk about five types of tests that are great for women with Endometriosis trying to get pregnant. These include blood tests, three types of microbiome tests, including the gastro-intestinal (GI) system, and urine and saliva tests for comprehensive hormone testing in the form of the DUTCH test.

This week’s episode is an interview with Ruby Ben from Ruby Ben Health in Texas, the USA. Ruby tells us about how she finally found out she had Endometriosis when she and her husband were trying to get pregnant. She explains how finally working out she needed to look at her body as a whole, listen to what it needed, feeding it foods that didn’t use lots of energy to digest them, so she had the energy to heal her body. She also shares her fertility journey, how she wants to get pregnant naturally and the steps she has taken. Ruby then shares how she wanted to then help other women in the same position about her self-healing journey she has learnt on her journey with other women.

EF#15: Adenomyosis vs Endometriosis – a Natural Healing Approach with Sara Lopez21 Oct 202000:42:04

This week’s episode is all about Adenomyosis (Adeno), often called the sister to Endometriosis. I had a great interview with Sara Lopez, who has Adeno, and who is also an Adenomyosis Coach. According to one study, that Sara mentions in the interview, 91% of women with Endometriosis have Adenomyosis, they just may never know. In this episode we talk about the symptoms, differences from Endo, how to get it diagnosed, how you can manage it with a holistic approach, how it might fertility and more.

Sara has always cared about women’s health, and when she was a teen her mother suddenly had a hysterectomy - her recovery was long and painful to watch.  She decided she wanted to help others find alternative ways to heal besides hysterectomy. She wanted to be that woman that says “of course you can find relief holistically”, so she became a women’s health coach.  Now that I’ve seen so many women have huge health shifts with a holistic approach, I can say that it IS possible if you are ready!

The things we discussed were:

  • Sara’s journey with Adenomyosis
  • What Adenomyosis is and the comparison to Endometriosis
  • Symptoms of Adenomyosis
  • Methods of diagnosis
  • How to address low iron resulting from heavy periods
  • How Adeno affects fertility
  • Sara’s holistic approach to reducing her and her client’s symptoms including lymphatic drainage, castor oil packs, acupuncture, abdominal massage, nutrition, gut healing.

I love to hear true healing success stories that inspire you that it is possible to live pain-free. Ashley was tired of going to the doctor and being told that her only options were the pill or to get pregnant so she decided to take matters into her own hands and apprenticed with Nicole Jardim to become a Women's Health Coach and then continued on to go to school for Nutritional Therapy. When Ashley is not working to help others she loves to spend time with her husband and two dogs travelling, reading, cooking, running, and hiking in the beautiful Arizona desert.

EF#7: Using the mind’s visualisation capabilities to improve your fertility with Joanne Verkuilen26 Aug 202000:49:34

In today’s podcast episode I interview a woman who’s voice I have listened to many many nights during my fertility journey, so as you can imagine it was a great honour to interview her and hear her voice for real! My guest is Joanne Verkuilen, the creator and mastermind behind Circle and Bloom, which provides guided visualisation and meditation programs for fertility and much more.

We really enjoyed recording this episode and our conversation covered everything from PCOS, Endometriosis, infertility, power of the mind, the placebo effect and how powerful this is, the need for hope and empowerment, how our body just needs the right tools to be able to heal itself and much more! I hope you enjoy it and find some inspiration from this, and that what you think and believe about your body, really does have a physical impact on your body. You can control how you are feeling.

Joanne Verkuilen is the founder of Circle + Bloom which aims to share the incredible power of the mind-body connection. Her various programs and guided meditations are designed to empower anyone on their journey. Diagnosed with PCOS and the possibility of infertility as a late teen, she did struggle to conceive. She had two very different pregnancy experiences but it ended with two happy, beautiful children.

When her friend Stephanie also started having fertility problems and seeing what she went through, this gave Joanne a business idea. Thus she created Circle + Bloom back in 2008. Exploring the connection between the mind and body, she created a meditation program for both infertility and cancer. Her company grew fairly into the scale that it is today and has since helped over 50,000 women worldwide.

The topics we discussed were:

  • Joanne’s PCOS and secondary infertility journey
  • The rollercoaster, emotional pain and trauma associated with infertility journeys
  • How Joanne found visualisation and meditation helped her best friends fertility, and went on to create Circle & Bloom with the support of Bernie Siegel (best selling author)
  • An amazing story of a boy who overcame fatal brain cancer through visualisations
  • How a plant-based diet has helped really helped her have healthy ovaries free of PCOS
  • The importance of the mind-body connection and how you can reverse long term negative beliefs that can be some peoples root causes behind unexplained infertility and Endo pain.
  • The need for taking control, hope, belief and empowerment when it comes to health conditions and not to accept negative believe patterns as the truth.
  • The believe you can reverse conditions like PCOS and Endometriosis through reversing our thought processes.
  • How our bodies are incredible and have the ability to heal with the right physical, mental and spiritual tools.
  • The pain-fear-tension triangle in relation to Endometriosis and how visualisation and meditation could be used to break this and assist with reducing Endo pain.

EF#6: Using Food as Medicine for Endo and TTC with Lizzie Alexander, PhD19 Aug 202000:49:09

In today’s episode I talk about nutrition. This is a huge topic, but I wanted to introduce the general nutrition principles related to 1) improving your Endometriosis symptoms and 2) optimising your body so you are ready to get pregnant and then sustain a healthy pregnancy. There are a lot of similarities between these two objectives, but also there can be some conflicting ways of approaching nutrition, meaning that many women with Endometriosis can follow the ‘Endo-diet’ to reduce inflammation but end up under-nourished or further under-nourished, which will not help you in getting pregnant.

So, here are some of the things I talk about are:

  • What is a ‘diet’ and what is the ‘endo-diet’?
  • What foods could actually be an issue and why?
  • Six key principles I recommend to clients to follow

PLUS, three things I always do when working with my Endo Fertility coaching clients

EF#5: Good guts, lively livers, fibroids & endometriosis with Christine Garvin12 Aug 202001:00:00

Your gut health is literally one of the most important systems in your body, especially combined with the actions of the liver. In this episode, we talk about the “gut-liver axis” as my guest Christine Garvin refers to it. This relationship is so important for the balance of our hormones, which has a strong effect on the symptoms of Endometriosis and the ability of the reproductive system to work optimally.

The digestive system has until the last few decades been relatively understudied - research is now showing how fundamental it is to so many other systems within our body. It affects our immune system, mental health, hormonal health, detoxification of the body, energy levels and so much more!

In this episode, my guest is Christine Garvin, MA, NE, RWS, a Functional Health Coach based in Asheville, North Carolina, in the US. She weaves together her personal health journey - including a fibroid surgery that nearly killed her - with her training in functional health, nutrition, and hormones to help women heal their gut and achieve hormonal balance. She is the host of the great podcast, Hormonally Speaking. Christine sees clients from all over the world via Zoom and offers self-guided healing programs on her website. You can find out more about Christine on her website at https://christinegarvin.com, on Instagram (@Christine Garvin) and her YouTube channel (@Christine Garvin).

We had a fantastic conversation and covered so many topics, some of which follow on very nicely from Episode 4 about stress and the adrenals. So here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • Her experience with a 6cm fibroid that resulted in her losing some of her intestines and getting sepsis
  • What fibroids are, the symptoms and how you find out you have them
  • Laparoscopic myomectomy vs. hysterectomy
  • Understanding what the root causes behind fibroids
  • Antibiotics, stress and poor gut health
  • Stress response and hormones
  • Diagnostic tools such as DUTCH for hormones, and GI-map to help diagnose gut health issues
  • Setting personal boundaries
  • Liver detoxification
  • Estrogen dominance
  • Surgery risks of intestinal damage and what to ask your doctor

PLUS, supplements, probiotics and other solutions to improve gut and liver health!

EF#4: Stress, Hormones, Fertility and Endo with Lizzie Alexander05 Aug 202000:37:44

So today I wanted to share with you information about stress and how this affects your delicately balanced hormones, which are so important for fertility. I also go into how this can affect your endometriosis, and even how your endometriosis affects your stress response. Stress is something that I have experienced many many times in my life for a variety of reasons. I have had chronic fatigue in my 20’s and now, unfortunately, have low cortisol and DHEA, what is now called “HPA axis dysfunction” and it is something that I am having to deal with as otherwise, it will prevent me from getting pregnant.

So, some of the things I talk about are:

  • What stress is – physical, emotional, internal and external?
  • The endocrine system and some of the important glands and hormones associated with stress, endometriosis and fertility
  • What our stress response actually is
  • How stress and cortisol affect fertility
  • How endometriosis is affected by stress and how it affects our stress response
  • Chronic fatigue and the different types and potential reasons
  • My personal experience with stress and trying to get pregnant, its effect on my endometriosis symptoms

PLUS, four ways you can manage stress and how to support your body’s response to stress!!

EF#2: Endometriosis Empowerment with Melissa Turner27 Jul 202000:57:18

You might not know it but there is hope after you Endometriosis diagnosis and there are other options beside hormone treatments and surgeries to manage your pain. Were you diagnosed early in your menstrual life and had enough of your endless surgeries? Or has it taken forever to get a diagnosis and only because you are now struggling with getting pregnant?

In this episode, my first guest is Melissa Turner, a stage 4 Endo warrior, who explains how she dealt with her Endometriosis after a diagnosis at 19 years old and seven surgeries. Through her own experimentation and further education as a Naturopathic Doctor she learnt how to manage the pain naturally, which allowed her body to heal itself of the Endometriosis. She developed the REACH Technique Programme so she could help empower women to realise there is hope and alternative possibilities to surgery and hormone treatment.

Melissa Turner has created an online platform for women who wish to better manage their endometriosis through natural and holistic methods. After her own experience and suffering through 7 surgeries, she found a way forward and wants other women to know that there is hope and there is a way to live pain and symptom-free.

You can read more about Melissa and her journey on her website at http://www.endoempowered.com/. Melissa has also created an incredible resource for women with endometriosis through her Endo Empowered Academy. Members gain the specific strategies that address endometriosis at the root cause and help the body heal. You can read more about it here: https://www.endoempowered.com/endo-empowered-academy/

The topics we discussed were:

  • Melissa’ journey with Endometriosis and her seven surgeries.
  • How Melissa found natural practices such as nutrition significantly reduced her pain.
  • The need for hope when being diagnosed with Endometriosis.
  • The role of the Mind-Body Connection / Mindset and how a woman’s negative. thoughts associated with pain can drive and manifest further pain and infertility.

EF#36: Fertility Empowerment, Visualisation and Journaling with Molly Nichols25 Aug 202101:17:19

My guest interview today is with Molly Nichols, a renowned fertility coach, healer, queen of guided visualisations and business mentor. Molly struggled to get pregnant for 7 years. In this interview she explains how a chance encounter changed her mindset, after which she became pregnant both through IVF and naturally, and is now mother to 4 beautiful, healthy children. She decided she needed to share her fertility work with the world and rightly so!

I specifically wanted to talk to Molly about how she uses visualisations and journaling to connect with our inner selves, to help nurture ourselves, find out what blocks or worries we might have, as these can be more powerful than any physical imbalance we may have.

I LOVED this interview, I always find speaking or listening to Molly is empowering and enlightening!

Here are a couple of great quotes:

“What is the conversation you have with yourself”

“What do I actually feel around the experience I am going through right now”

The topics discussed in this episode:

  • Molly’s fertility journey
  • Perfectionism
  • Worthiness of getting pregnant
  • Visualisations to reduce pain, improve healing and get pregnant
  • Doing versus being
  • Is positivity and manifestations really that helpful?
  • Mind-body connection
  • Conceiving as an older woman
  • Multidimensional healing (nutritional, mental, emotional and spiritual)
  • Importance of mental and emotional healing and our resistance to this
  • Journaling and fertility
  • Empathy and safety

A NUMBER OF ACTIONABLE TIPS WERE DISCUSSED INCLUDING:

  • Understanding the environmental factors contributing to EBV complications.
  • Importance of proper testing for conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis related to EBV.
