Episode 195: Tom Hatsis: The Psychedelic Historian/The Golden Age of Psychedelic Research in the 1950s/How to Avoid a Bad Trip02 Sep 202101:15:06

Thomas Hatsis is an author, lecturer, and historian of witchcraft, magic, Western religions, contemporary psychedelia, entheogens, and medieval pharmacopeia.

In this podcast, despite many detours, (all my fault) we tend to focus on his new book LSD-The Wonder Child:  The Golden Age of Psychedelic Research in the 1950s published by Inner Traditions.

This marvelous new work details the blossoming of psychedelic research in the 1950s.  Tom details the experimentation of different groups--from research labs to the military to bohemian art circles--who were seeking how best to utilize LSD and other promising psychedelics like mescaline.  Sharing the details of many primary source medical reports, the author examines how doctors saw LSD as a tool to gain access top the minds of schizophrenics and thus better understand the causes of mental illness.  The author also looks at how the CIA believed LSD could be turned into a powerful mind-control weapon, including a full account of the notorious top secret program MKUltra.

Episode 178: Iszabel Fairbairn: Movement Medicine/Ecstatic Dance/Sound Therapy/The "How" of Human Consciousness10 May 202101:04:14

Iszabel is an Ecstatic Dance DJ, Movement Medicine Teacher, and Sound Therapist.  She holds classes, workshops, retreats and ceremonies around the world.

Iszabel's teenage days were mostly spent travelling down the motorway at weekends, holding a spot in the club, usually by the speaker, and emerging next morning happy, fulfilled and totally danced-out.  Not knowing what to do with a degree in Modern & Medieval History, Iszabel looked inward and asked her heart.  A career in the music industry followed including artistic management, promotion, and 10 years at BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra producing studio programmes and documentaries.

Iszabel is a resident DJ at Ecstatic Dance UK and Ecstatic Dance Ibiza and has played some of the most forward-thinking festivals, including Burning Man and Buddhafield.  She mixes shamanic tribal beats rooted in the Elemetns with underground club vibes.  She also offers 1-2-1 and group Relaxation and Reflective Sound Therapy sessions, where she plays the gong, Himalayan Bowls, Crystal Bowls and percussion.

Izabel's latest offering is a DJ course for conscious dance teachers and health and wellbeing practitioners.  DJ Mystery to Mastery is a heart based approach to the art of mixing music.  Her hope is that the course will empower people to integrate DJ and musical skills into their medicine box for the benefit of all.

Iszabel trained at the The School of Movement Medicine with Ya'Acov and Susannah Darling Khan, at the British Academy of Sound Therapy with Lyz Cooper and brings all of her experience of life into her work.

Episode 164: Lucinda Bakken White: Transformational Portals Between Life and Death/Confessions of a Bone Woman/Realizing Authentic Wildness in a Civilized World11 Feb 202101:04:47

Lucinda Bakken White, author and soul guide, began her professional career with a MBA and a coveted position at IBM only to realize that material success did not make her happy, as her family and the over culture had promised it would.  After moving through a suicidal depression at age 27, Lucinda boldly pushed against cultural norms to know and express authenticity.  Remarkably, her biggest shift happened when she touched an ancient buffalo bone, and it ignited her passion for working with dead animals.  For over two decades, Lucinda has immersed herself into the sacred realms of death and dying, where she experiences beauty in the seemingly ugly, witnesses the laws of transformation, and recognizes herself in the reflection of nature.  Now, as an elder with experience in the process of self-discovery and personal transformation, Lucinda inspires and guides others to connect with their authentic nature and move through large and small journeys of change that are triggered by fear, depression, anxiety, exhaustion, heartbreak, identity crisis, life stage transitions, illness or the desire to live a more meaningful life.   She is also the author of her memoir, Confessions of a Bone Woman:  Realizing Authentic Wildness in a Civilized World--and currently studying to become a Death Midwife.  For information about Lucinda, visit her instagram page @authenticwildness or her website at:
