Charli has Sam Lowry and Dwight Leeper on this week to talk about pumps in Senegal and how they continued to give of their skills even in retirement. Sam Lowry was born in South Weymouth, Massachusetts in 1952 and then spent his childhood and early youth in Cincinnati, Ohio. Currently a retired engineer living in Huntsville, Alabama he joined Rotary International in 2018 as a member of the Huntsville Rotary Club for the opportunity to be involved with volunteer work. Sam has a Bachelor of Arts in Engineering and Applied Physics from Harvard University, a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and a PhD in Engineering Sciences from the University of Tennessee Space Institute. After service as a Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps, he arrived in Huntsville in 1981 from Cleveland, Ohio to work as a NASA engineer in the MSFC Analysis Branch during the early years of the Space Shuttle. In 1991 he joined CFD Research Corporation, where he spent 14 years helping develop a class of computer software tools known as Computational Fluid Dynamics. After CFD Research Corporation, he spent a year as a full-time science teacher at Lee High School and then as a volunteer for the next seven years teaching their AP Physics class. Following his full year as a teacher at Lee, he went back to the private sector as CEO and co-founder of Simerics. Simerics develops simulation software for modeling pumps and fluid systems used in a variety of applications, including the oil and gas, water, and automotive industries. Having retired from Simerics in 2016 , he enjoys a mix of consulting, travel, recreation and volunteer work, including serving as one of the leads on a recently approved Global Grant to introduce deep-water hand pumps into rural communities in Senegal, working with the West Chester PA Rotary Club as the International Sponsor and the Dakar Soleil SN Rotary Club as the Host. This year, he is very much looking forward to helping provide reliable access to clean water for rural communities in Senegal under the Rotary Club Deep-Water Pumps for Senegal project. Dwight Leeper's philosophy, borrowed from Scouts, is “to leave the world a better place than we found it.” He began his Rotary journey in D7510 NJ in 2002 with the Fanwood Scotch Plains Club. There he served two terms as Membership Chair and two as President. He served the District with a three-year term as Assistant Governor, as Deputy Governor, Vice Governor and was District Governor 2012-13 during which he led a U.S./Canada NID in Pakistan and subsequently hosted a GSE team from Pakistan. He is a graduate of the Leadership Institute, a multiple Paul Harris fellow, a member of the Paul Harris Society and have been a facilitator at multi-district PETS. He chaired a District Long Range Planning Committee for two years and joined a District team to Nepal, He joined the West Chester Rotary Club in 2015. With our District, I have been a DG trainer. This week on the Pod, Charli has Mark Connolly on to talk about his path. Currently, Mark serves as Global Product Manager of mechanical packing and gaskets at A.W. Chesterton, a world leader in helping process industry companies and manufacturers improve the reliability and efficiency of their process platforms. As a global product manager, Mark works closely with manufacturing, marketing, product development, and field product specialists to ensure current and new products continue to provide world-class solutions to fluid sealing needs across industries. Mark joined Chesterton in 2017 as a Process Engineer in the Operational Excellence team. As a part of the Operations team, he was a key member in developing process improvements and quality controls within manufacturing. Prior to working at Chesterton, he worked as a manufacturing engineer at RBC Bearings, an aerospace bearing manufacturer in Fairfield, CT. Mark holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University. He is a Certified Six Sigma Green Belt and Lean Black Belt. Mark is an avid college football fan that also enjoys skiing, running, and playing competitive ultimate frisbee with his wife, Jenna.

He received a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois and is also a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture. Brian supervises the treatment plant operations for the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant (WRP). The Stickney WRP is one of the largest wastewater treatment facilities in the world. It serves residents in the central part of Chicago and 46 other suburban communities within a 260-square-mile area. The Stickney WRP currently serves over 2.3 million people, cleans an average of 700 million gallons of wastewater per day, and can treat 1.4 billion gallons per day.

This week Charli has Empowering Women alum Cheryl Merchant, CEO at Taco, on to talk about her journey in the pump industry. Cheryl has 40 years of leadership and management experience in manufacturing. She has held leadership positions with industry giants like GM, Mazda, Ford, and Lear Corporation and led teams in the U.S., Mexico, Canada and throughout Europe and Asia. Cheryl spent 19 years as the President and CEO of Hope Global, a manufacturing company with over 2,000 employees and operations in the U.S., Mexico, Czech Republic, China, and Brazil. During that period, Hope Global grew five times in revenue and became a Tier II leader in the Automotive Industry. In 2019, Cheryl joined Taco as President of Taco Family of Companies, North America. In March of 2020, Cheryl was promoted to CEO of Taco Family of Companies Global operations. Since taking the helm, Taco has doubled in revenue, expanded the workforce by 350 team members, acquired a new business unit in England and have planned global operational facility expansions of over 243,000 sq, ft. in the next 3 years. Cheryl has received awards over her career that include Providence Business News Rhode Island Business Women’s Career Achievement Award (2022) and Leadership Award (2001, 2014), New England Business Woman of the Year (2014), Mentor of the Year PBN RI (2016), Crain’s Women in Manufacturing of the Year (2018), Trailblazer in Business / Cheryl Watkins Snead Award (2018). She holds two Honorary Doctorates from New England Institute of Technology for Humane Letters and Bryant University for Business. Her community work includes being a member of the Board of Governors for the Rhode Island Commodores, Advisory Board Member for the University of Rhode Island, member of the Rhode Island Manufacturers Association Advisory Board, and a Board member of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce. Cheryl has also served in the past as a Trustee (Secretary and Chair of Student Affairs) for Bryant University, Board of Governors, and a Trustee of the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council. She has also served on the boards of Rhode Island Economic Development, Governor’s Workforce Board, the Rhode Island Hospital Foundation, and the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce.

This week is a twofer as Charli talks to Mike Franco and Gillian Harding-Moore of PSG Biotech Mike Franco is the Director of Global Biopharma Sales at PSG Biotech, part of PSG, a Dover Company. He began his career at PSG in 2017, serving as sales manager for the Americas. His career has spanned several companies, starting as a research assistant for the Center for Space Physics at Boston University. From there, he became an applications engineer with Panametrics Inc. before joining GE Power Systems in 2002 as a commercial engineer. His time with GE spanned a decade, working in various managerial and leadership roles at GE Industrial, GE Energy Services and GE Oil & Gas. In 2014, he joined Ametek as its regional sales manager, serving in that role until 2017. Gillian Harding-Moore serves as the director of Global Marketing at PSG Biotech & Quantex, part of PSG, a Dover Company. Having an entrepreneurial mindset and big-picture creative ideas has defined her career, which in early years, included Saatchi & Saatchi as its art director. She held a similar role at Euros RSCG before founding her own branding and digital agency, Fuel Creativity Ltd (FCL). 10 years later, having successfully served clients including GSK and Tata Steel, she joined one of her long-standing clients, Fashion GPS as its managing director of Europe in 2011. In 2018, Gillian joined another long-standing client, Quantex, the recyclable pump brand now owned by PSG. Holly joined ABB in April 2021 as the West Regional Sales Manager for HVAC Drives and after seven quick months, she was promoted to a newly created role of Director of Sales where she was responsible for cultivating a proactive sales approach, communicating the voice of customer back to the factory, and continuing the sales growth strategy. She brings years of significant expertise in technical sales across multiple industries such as HVAC, healthcare, manufacturing, environmental, and chemical. Prior to joining ABB, Holly Montrose was a known talent in the industry. She succeeded working for a small competitor, where she didn’t have the tools or advantages of a large organization. She approached the role with the mind of a student and taught herself about the HVAC industry and the technology used to support it. Holly has a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, with a focus in polymers, and a minor in Business Administration. She believes that her studies in the sciences has been a tremendous assets to her career. It has given her the tools to approach technical sales with a systematic approach while constantly driving for the best solution. While newer to the Leadership role, Holly is no stranger to being a leader. She has spent majority of her life practicing and participating in the dance world. She has multiple national titles, Choreography awards, and countless dancers who have become a part of her family.
