What is true freedom?

And why should you strive to have true freedom? What's the reward?

In many therapy and self-help programs, such as 12 step programs, it begins with a desire to have freedom FROM something: freedom from pain, bondage, limitation, addiction.

But, as the Buddha taught, aversion - our desire to get rid of something in order to be free - is part of the core of the false self.

See, if we're trying to be free from something, we're still married to it vibrationally. As long as you're focused on what you're being free from, you're still in bondage to that very thing.

In fact, the more we try to get freedom from, the more bonded we become to that cycle and the more we're stuck on that wheel of karma. Every time we try to get or "get rid of" from that place, we create more karma because we're increasing our sense of separation from the one life, the source, and the substance of all of creation.

That substance of all creation is who and what you are now ...not who you're going to be when you get freedom from a circumstance you don't like.

And so, as helpful as many self-help programs can be in the beginning, at a certain point we have to shift from trying to get freedom FROM ...to stepping into our freedom TO.

A freedom towards something. A freedom to choose. A freedom to live the way you want to live.

There's economical freedom. There's mental freedom. There's emotional freedom. And there is, of course, physical freedom in the form of feeling safe and secure or feeling health and wellbeing.

When we have freedom, it gives us more choices in the midst of circumstances to do what we want regardless of how we feel, how much money we have, even what our beliefs tell us.

You start to get distance, which allows you to observe patterns, expand your awareness, and experience even more freedom.

"Who do you think you are, God's gift to the world?"

Heck yeah!

You are literally the gift of God to the world, just like me.

Now you might be thinking, "What is this crazy person talking about? Has he looked around at human nature lately?"

Don't worry. I'm not blind to the facts of experience.

Yes, there are a lot of crazy people. Frankly, we're all pretty crazy ...humanly speaking.

But that's not who you and I really are. And that's not what we're worshiping.

You are the Buddha, the Christ, the light of the world.

In fact, the very word "human" comes from the Sanskrit for "man" and means the "dispenser of Divine gifts."

So the very ground you walk on is holy and sacred and hallowed. Because you walk on it.

Therefore you must worship the ground you walk on.

The alternative is false modesty, false humility, or worse: self-loathing.

It's not arrogant or egotistical to worship yourself. It's arrogant and egotistical to beat yourself up, to think of yourself as less than gorgeous and beautiful and powerful and wonderful.

That's arrogant. That's pure ego.

What is the Garden of Eden story?

Adam eats of the fruit of the knowledge of the tree of good and evil. Then all hell breaks loose.

Adam falls into a dream of being separate from the one life or the one power.

In his dream, he succumbs to the belief that there are many powers, divided fundamentally into two types: good power and evil power.

Adam's "knowledge" of good and evil is the fundamental flaw in human consciousness that creates all suffering.

The problem of good and evil is the one problem that creates all of our human problems. It is our sense of being separate from this one life or this one power.

All great religions are established to solve this illusion of two powers, of duality.

The illusion that there's God and you.

There are different types of freedom: emotional, mental, physical, social, financial and many more.

These types of freedom are what we strive to achieve by escaping what's been called "The Five Gates of Hell" that trap us in emotionalism, intellectualism, sensualism, personalism, and materialism.

Ultimately, real freedom can never exist as long as we believe someone or something outside of our consciousness is the source of anything in our life.

As long as we are caught in any way believing anyone or anything outside of our pure center of awareness - any thought, person, situation, emotion, condition, law - we cannot be free because we are caught in one of these Five Gates of Hell.

(It's pretty bleak, isn't it?)

We're hypnotized into striving to get more and more and more from outside us, or get rid of what is outside us in order to feel okay, we're on a treadmill of false freedom.

This is the ego's grandest trick, and it is bleak, indeed!

What have your loved ones given you?

And those that you haven't even known, but who you love because they gave you so much - Buddha, Jesus, Martin Luther King, Jr., Shakespeare, your ancestors - what specific thing or item did they give to you?

It wasn't a specific material object.

Their real gift was their Presence: the activity, quality, or frequency of Consciousness that they caught and downloaded and anchored on Earth.

Perhaps that Divine idea was love. Perhaps it was a belief in yourself.

Whatever it was, they activated and downloaded some eternal quality in a unique and unprecedented way.

There's a story in the Bible about Jesus cursing a fig tree, because it wasn't bearing fruit. The fig tree dies.

Seems kind of out of character for the Christ, doesn't it?

But it's a cautionary tale for all of us; if we don't produce the fruit of our kind, if we do not allow that which is our nature to come to fruition, then Life will get rid of our current forms and circumstances.

We live in a culture that seems to have been built on a single main thrust of, "Buy more! Get this!"

The promise of these advertising messages is that you'll gain more comfort, convenience, safety and security by these external means.

But this comfort and convenience is holding you back from bearing the fruit of who you really are.

If you want to be free, fulfilled, progressive, innovative and creative, to live a life of true vision and purpose, you have to grow and bear creative fruit. You must allow your evolutionary impulse to have its way with you.

By prioritizing comfort or convenience and avoiding growth, you're in opposition to Life itself, and you will experience crisis, stagnation, and - like the fig tree - death in some form or fashion.

Life is not a problem to be solved, but a mystery to be lived. Understand that the pursuit of comfort and convenience at the expense of the emergence of your soul's purpose will you back every time, and, ever-so-softly ...kill you.

Every day, we experience thoughts and impulses that bring about a sense of joy, creativity, and inspiration.

We want to move in the direction of these desires, be guided by them, because these are the soul's expression. This is the emergence of your higher vision.

But then you're stopped short by fear.

Yes, there is healthy, protective fear: the kind that makes you pull off the road when you sense dangerous driving conditions ahead.

But the kind of fear that stops you from coming into alignment with your higher self, stops you from saying "yes" to your Yes ...this fear prevents you from moving the edge of your own self-concept.

Fear and its cousins: struggle, anxiety - even frustration and anger - come upon you like an electric fence. The more energy you put into moving in the direction of your desires in the "greener pastures" beyond the fenceline of your current state, the more energy you'll have to put into protecting yourself from this terrifying, painful threshold.

Until you break down.

Tellingly, this is just when most of our breakthroughs occur, and the reason is that those limits must be broken through in order to grow into our fuller selves.

So, how do we live in a world in which fear is a regular occurrence that's never going away?

The end of fear comes at beginning of our understanding what fear is.

Every poker player has something called a "tell." This is the twitch or quirk, change in body language or tone of voice or focus of the eyes, some signal that lets other players have an idea what you've got in your hand.

Fear is your ego's "tell." It's your personal twitch or quirk that signals you are coming up against your ego's limited self-concept. Your old, limited way of being is cracking open, breaking down, and giving way to something much bigger, bolder, and better.
