"Wu Gang Chops the Moon Tree" (吴刚伐桂, wú gāng fá guì) comes from Youyang Zazu, a Chinese book written more than 1,100 years ago in the Tang dynasty. The old text is only a few lines long. On the moon there is a sweet-smelling osmanthus tree, more than a kilometer tall. A man named Wu Gang keeps chopping it, but every cut closes right up again. The old book says he made mistakes while learning magic, so he was sent there as a punishment. In our story it is not a punishment. It is a promise from his teacher: "Cut down this tree, and I will teach you all my magic."

Wu Gang is the best woodcutter in the mountains. Other people need a whole morning to cut down a tree. Wu Gang needs three swings — CHOP! CHOP! CHOP! "There is no tree in the world I can't cut down!" One day he sees an old man standing on a cloud, and he asks to learn magic. But when he waters the magic plants, he runs after a rainbow butterfly. When he watches the fire, he runs off to hear a song. So his teacher flies him to the moon and hands him an axe: "Cut down this tree." Easy, right? Can Wu Gang do it? And what is so strange about this tree?

"The Jade Rabbit" (玉兔捣药, yù tù dǎo yào) is one of China's oldest moon stories. Chinese poems from almost 2,000 years ago already say a white rabbit on the moon is making medicine. How did the rabbit get there? Our story comes from an old tale from India. The Chinese monk Xuanzang wrote it down about 1,300 years ago. In the old tale, the rabbit jumps into a fire to feed a hungry old man, and the old man, who is really a god, puts the rabbit's picture on the moon. In our story, the old man catches the rabbit just in time.

Deep in a forest live three friends: a clever fox, a quick monkey, and a little white rabbit. One day a hungry old man sits down under a tree. "Can you find me something to eat?" The fox jumps at the river — SPLASH! — and brings back a big fish. The monkey climbs a tree and brings back an armful of fruit. But the little rabbit looks and looks, from morning until the sun goes down, and finds nothing at all... What will the rabbit give the old man? And who is this old man, really?

"Kuafu Chases the Sun" (夸父逐日, kuā fù zhú rì) comes from the Classic of Mountains and Seas, a Chinese book more than 2,200 years old. The old text is only a few lines long: the giant Kuafu runs after the sun, drinks two rivers dry, and dies of thirst on the way north. His walking stick turns into a forest, which people say was a peach forest. In our story Kuafu does not die on the road. He is too tired, lies down, and closes his eyes as if he is falling asleep. In 2022 China launched a satellite to study the sun, and it is really named Kuafu-1.

On a high mountain in the north lives a group of giants. Kuafu is the tallest. His head touches the clouds. He loves to watch the sun, but he cannot work it out: where does the sun go at night? One morning he picks up his big stick and says, "I am going to chase the sun." He crosses a mountain in one step and a river in two. All day he runs. The sun gets bigger, redder, and closer. But he is so thirsty. He drinks the Yellow River dry. He drinks the Wei River dry. The sun is right in front of his hand. Does he catch it?

"The Eight Immortals Cross the Sea" (八仙过海(下), bā xiān guò hǎi) comes from a Chinese novel written about 400 years ago. In the book, the immortals fight the Dragon King after crossing the sea. We do not tell that part; we only tell the crossing. In the book Iron-Crutch Li throws his iron crutch into the sea; we follow the folk pictures and let him use his gourd. The tower on Penglai island is real, and so is the sea mirage people see there. Today "the Eight Immortals cross the sea, each showing their own power" is a common Chinese saying: everyone has a different skill, and every skill gets the job done.

The eight immortals go to the island of Penglai to watch the moon rise out of the sea. In the morning it is time to go home. Usually an immortal just steps on a cloud, but Lü Dongbin says, "No clouds today! Everyone cross with your own treasure." Li throws his gourd into the sea and it turns into a boat. Zhang Guolao rides his donkey backwards across the waves. Han Zhongli lies on his big fan and floats. He Xiangu's lotus opens into a pink flower boat. Han Xiangzi plays his flute and the sea opens a road. Eight immortals, eight ways — who has the greatest power?

"The Eight Immortals, Part 2" (八仙过海(中), bā xiān guò hǎi) tells the stories of the other four immortals. Zhang Guolao rides his donkey backwards and can fold it into a piece of paper, a tale from Tang dynasty records. He Xiangu, the only woman among the eight, ate a powder made from a shining stone and became light as a leaf. Lan Caihe sang in the streets and gave his money away; an old book says he rose into the clouds and dropped a shoe, and we let him ride a crane. Han Xiangzi made a peony bloom in the snow. In the old stories these three were Lü Dongbin's students, and Zhang Guolao was his friend.

Zhang Guolao is so old that he cannot remember his own age. He rides his little donkey backwards. Why? "When I go forward," he says, "I like to look at the road behind me." When he does not need the donkey, he folds it into a piece of paper! He Xiangu jumps from treetop to treetop and picks fruit for her mother every morning. Lan Caihe wears one shoe and sings in the street, until a white crane comes to carry him into the sky — and one shoe falls off. Han Xiangzi covers a flowerpot with a cloth on a snowy day and asks, "What color do you want?" What is under the cloth?

"The Eight Immortals, Part 1" (八仙过海(上), bā xiān guò hǎi) tells how the first four of China's Eight Immortals came to be. The Eight Immortals were fixed as a group in a novel from about 400 years ago, but each one has older folk tales. We tell four: Iron-Crutch Li, whose soul left his body and had to borrow a lame beggar's body; Han Zhongli, a general who lost a battle and met an old immortal in the mountains; Lü Dongbin and his famous "millet dream"; and Cao Guojiu, who gave all his money to the poor. For young listeners we do not talk about death in the body story, and we keep the war to one line.

Long ago, eight immortals lived in heaven, but they all started as ordinary people. Li Xuan could send his soul far away while his body stayed home. He told his student, "Watch my body for seven days." On day six, the student ran home. When the soul came back, the body was gone! Han Zhongli was a general who lost a battle and got lost in the mountains, where an old man by a fire asked him a strange question. Lü Dongbin fell asleep in a little inn while millet cooked on the stove. In his dream he lived a whole life, then woke up. Was the millet done yet?

"Leizu and the Silkworms" (嫘祖养蚕, léi zǔ yǎng cán) is the story of how people found silk. Leizu was the wife of the Yellow Emperor. A history book from 2,100 years ago names her, but the silk story itself is a folk legend told much later. The most famous part is a silkworm cocoon falling into a bowl of hot water, and a thread coming out that goes on and on. We keep that part. We do not talk about what happens to the worm inside the cocoon. We do show the real way silk farmers keep some cocoons so the moths can come out and lay eggs for next spring. Today, silk is still one of the softest and most precious cloths in the world.

Long ago, people did not know how to make cloth. Leizu loved to walk in a mulberry grove. One spring she heard a tiny sound: sha-sha, sha-sha. Fat little white worms were eating the leaves! She came back every day to watch. One day the worms stopped eating and wrapped themselves in shiny thread, making little white balls. Leizu took a few home. That night, one ball slipped from her hand into her bowl of hot water. She fished for it with a twig — and out came a thread, thin as a hair, that would not stop. She pulled and pulled, all the way out the door. What was inside that little white ball?

"Yu the Great Tames the Flood" (大禹治水, dà yǔ zhì shuǐ) is about 4,000 years old. It is part legend and part early history. The old books say Yu worked on the flood for thirteen years, and passed his own door three times without going in. We leave out the story of Yu's father, who tried to block the water and failed. The three scenes at Yu's door — a baby crying, a baby waving, a child calling "Daddy!" — come from later retellings; the old books give only one line. The dragon that draws a river with its tail is from an old legend too. Today "passing his door three times without going in" is a Chinese saying for someone who works so hard for everyone that they cannot go home.

Long ago, a great flood covered the fields and villages. People climbed up the mountains to stay safe. Others had tried to stop the water with high walls, but the water only rose higher, and the walls fell down. So the leader Shun asked a man named Yu for help. Yu did not start digging right away. First he walked a long, long way to see where the water came from. He found out: you cannot stop water, but water always flows downhill. So Yu and the people dug rivers, to give the water a road all the way to the sea. It took thirteen years. Three times Yu passed his own door — and did not go in. Can you guess why?

"Jingwei Fills the Sea" (精卫填海, jīng wèi tián hǎi) is more than 2,200 years old. It comes from the *Classic of Mountains and Seas* (《山海经》). The old story is very short: a little girl, the daughter of the Flame Emperor, drowned in the Eastern Sea. She became a small bird with a white beak and red feet. Her call sounds like "Jingwei," so that is her name. Every day she carries pebbles to fill up the sea. We added a few things for young listeners: the sunrise, the little boat, and the talk between Jingwei and the sea. We do not use the girl's old name, because it sounds just like the goddess Nüwa from episodes 2 and 3. Today "精卫填海" is a Chinese idiom for someone who never gives up.

Long ago, the Flame Emperor had a little daughter. She loved to watch the sun rise out of the sea. One morning she took a small boat to find where the sun lives. At noon the wind changed. Big waves took the girl and her boat down to the bottom of the sea. But she did not disappear. That day she became a little bird, calling her own name: "Jingwei! Jingwei!" From then on, she dropped pebbles into the sea every day. The sea laughed: "You can never fill me up." What did Jingwei say back?

"The Carp Leaps the Dragon Gate" (鲤鱼跳龙门, lǐ yú tiào lóng mén) is about 2,000 years old. It comes from a Han dynasty book called *Records of the Three Qin* (《三秦记》). The old story says: on the Yellow River there is a place called Dragon Gate. The water there is very fast. Fish that jump over it become dragons. Fish that fail get a mark on the forehead. In our story, the fish that fall just bump their heads and try again. Two parts are new for this episode: the little carp finds a rising stream of water under the waterfall, and after she becomes a dragon she comes back to help the old carp. Dragon Gate is a real place in Shanxi, China. Today, Chinese families say "鲤鱼跳龙门" to wish a child good luck at school.

Every spring, the carp of the Yellow River swim upstream to Dragon Gate. It is a huge waterfall between two mountains. An old carp says: whoever jumps over it will become a dragon. The big carp jump and fall, jump and fall. A very small carp wants to try too. She jumps once, twice, five times. Her head is red and her tail hurts. Then she stops and watches the water. A peach blossom petal drifts by — and she discovers a secret. Can you guess what it is?

"Chang'e Flies to the Moon" (嫦娥奔月, cháng é bēn yuè) is the story of who lives on the moon. It was first written down about 2,100 years ago in a book called *Huainanzi* (《淮南子》). The old line is very short: Hou Yi asked the Queen Mother of the West for the elixir of immortality, and Chang'e **stole it** and flew to the moon, leaving Hou Yi heartbroken. We tell the kinder folk version, the one most people know today: a bad man named Feng Meng came to seize the elixir while Hou Yi was away, and Chang'e swallowed it because there was nothing else she could do. A later book by Zhang Heng says she turned into a toad on the moon — we leave that out. The tale that Mid-Autumn moon-gazing began with Hou Yi setting out offerings for her is folklore; the festival itself only took shape much later, in the Tang and Song dynasties.

After Hou Yi shot down the nine suns, a goddess from the far western mountains — the Queen Mother of the West — gave him a small round shining pill. "Eat this and you can fly up to the heavens and never grow old." But there was only one pill. Hou Yi shook his head: he did not want to fly away alone and leave his wife Chang'e behind on earth. So he gave the pill to her to keep. On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, Hou Yi went out hunting, and his student Feng Meng, who had pretended to be sick, burst into the house to seize the pill. With no other choice, Chang'e swallowed it — and she grew lighter and lighter, light as a feather, and floated up into the sky. There were so many places she could have gone, but she kept looking back down, and in the end she stopped at the moon. Can you guess why?

"Hou Yi Shoots the Suns" (后羿射日, hòu yì shè rì) explains why there is only one sun in the sky. It was first written down about 2,100 years ago in a book called *Huainanzi* (《淮南子》). The old book says the archer shot down *all ten* suns — the version where he leaves one behind came later, from folk retellings, and that is the one we tell here. Also, the archer in the old book is called simply "Yi," and he is not the same person as "Hou Yi" of the Xia dynasty; the two were mixed up long ago. Today everyone says "Hou Yi," so we use that familiar name throughout. The ten suns living on the Fusang tree come from a different old book, the *Classic of Mountains and Seas* (《山海经》).

Far away in the east, by the great sea, grew a huge tree called Fusang, and ten suns lived in it. They looked like ten golden birds. Each morning one of them took a turn flying across the sky, from east to west, bringing light and warmth to the world. But one morning, all ten woke up at once. "Flying alone every day is so boring — let's all fly together today!" And whoosh — up went all ten suns. The rivers ran low, the young crops turned yellow and crumbled, and the ground cracked open. So the leader Yao sent for the finest archer of that time: Hou Yi. He climbed to the highest mountaintop with his great bow. Twang! — and one sun burst into thousands of golden sparks and drifted down. After the ninth, only one sun was left. Hou Yi set another arrow on the string... and then he stopped, and slowly lowered his bow. Can you guess why?

"Cangjie Invents Writing" (仓颉造字, cāng jié zào zì) is the myth of how Chinese characters began. It was first written down over 2,000 years ago, in books called *Xunzi* (《荀子》) and *Huainanzi* (《淮南子》). The old line says: on the day Cangjie made the characters, millet rained from the sky and ghosts cried in the night — a little spooky! We tell the happy folk version: we keep the wonderful rain of grain, and leave the ghosts out. The details that Cangjie was the Yellow Emperor's record-keeper, had four eyes, and got his idea from animal footprints come from later books, so we tell them as legend.

Long ago, people could not write. To remember things, they tied knots in ropes — a big knot for a big thing, a small knot for a small thing. Cangjie kept records for the Yellow Emperor, and his ropes were full of knots. But when the Emperor asked, "How many bags of grain did we harvest last month?" — Cangjie counted his knots and just could not remember! Then one snowy day, an old hunter pointed at the ground: three-pronged prints mean a bird, round ones mean a deer — one look, and you know who passed by. Cangjie's eyes lit up: what if he drew the shape of each thing, one picture for one thing? A circle with a dot became "sun" (日). A curved crescent became "moon" (月)... And on the day the characters were finished, something amazing fell from the sky. Can you guess what it was?

"Shennong Tastes a Hundred Herbs" (神农尝百草, shén nóng cháng bǎi cǎo) comes from *Huainanzi* (《淮南子》), a book written about 2,100 years ago. The old book tells it in just a few lines: Shennong taught people to plant grains, and tasted every plant and every spring himself, so everyone would know what was safe — on his worst day, he was poisoned seventy times. One note: the earliest book does not mention tea. The tradition that Shennong discovered tea goes back to the Tang-dynasty *Classic of Tea* (《茶经》); the famous line about tea curing his poisons appeared much later, so in our story tea is the fresh little leaf that lifts his spirits, while healing herbs do the curing. Some folk tales also give the story a sad ending with a deadly herb; we do not tell it that way.

The mountains were full of plants — but which ones were safe to eat? Nobody knew. Some people got terrible tummy aches from eating the wrong ones. Shennong, the kind leader, made a brave decision: he would taste everything himself, then teach everyone! Sweet red berries — good to eat. Bitter green leaves — remember those. Cool spring water — sweet or bitter? Taste and see. But danger came too. One day, after tasting a little plant, his tummy hurt and his head spun — poison! The old book says he was poisoned seventy times in a single day, yet he never gave up. And after a long day of tasting bitter plants, what fresh little leaves made him feel bright and strong again?

"Suiren Drills Wood for Fire" (燧人钻木取火, suì rén zuān mù qǔ huǒ) comes from *Han Feizi* (《韩非子》), a book written about 2,300 years ago. The old book tells it in just a few words: a wise man drilled wood to make fire, taught everyone how to use it, and people honored him with the name Suiren — "the one who brings fire." The woodpecker that inspires him in our episode comes from later retellings of the legend.

Long ago, people had no fire. Fruit and fish could only be eaten raw, winters were freezing, and nights were pitch dark. Only lightning could set the forest burning — and once, someone found a piece of meat roasted by the wildfire. It smelled wonderful and tasted so much better than raw! But when the rain came, the fire went out, and nobody knew how to make a new one. Then one day, a curious young man saw a woodpecker pecking a tree — tok, tok, tok — and tiny sparks flew out! He wondered: if I drill wood against wood, can I make fire too? The first time, the wood only got warm. The second time, there was just a wisp of smoke. And when a spark finally jumped out, the wind blew it away... Can he find a way to keep that little spark alive?

"Nüwa Mends the Sky" (女娲补天, nǚ wā bǔ tiān) comes from *Huainanzi* (《淮南子》), a book written about 2,100 years ago. Two notes about our version: in the oldest book, this story and the story of Gonggong knocking down Mount Buzhou were two separate tales — later storytellers joined them together, and Gonggong's rival became Zhurong, the god of fire. A fight between water and fire is easy for children to understand, so we follow that version. Also, in the old book Nüwa cut off a giant turtle's legs to hold up the sky; in our story, the kind turtle swims over and helps all by itself.

The water god Gonggong and the fire god Zhurong had a big fight. Gonggong lost — and he was so angry that, BOOM! — he crashed right into Mount Buzhou, the great pillar holding up the sky. A big piece of the sky fell down, leaving a huge dark hole! Water poured down, fires burst up, and people hid in caves, holding each other tight. Up in the sky, Nüwa saw her children in trouble. "Don't be afraid! The sky is broken — I will mend it!" She crossed ninety-nine mountains and ninety-nine rivers to gather stones of five colors — red, yellow, blue, white, and black — and melted them over a great reed fire for nine days and nine nights... The hole was patched! But the four corners of the sky were still wobbly. What could she do?

"Nüwa Creates People" (女娲造人, nǚ wā zào rén) is China's oldest myth about where people came from. It was first written down about 1,800 years ago, in a book called *Fengsu Tongyi* (《风俗通义》). The old book also says the people shaped by hand became rich and the ones flicked from a rope became poor. We do not tell it that way — in our story, every little clay person is just as lovely and just as loved.

After Pangu split the sky and the earth, the world was big and beautiful: tall mountains, long rivers, flowers, little deer, little fish. But the goddess Nüwa walked and walked, and the world felt very quiet — a little bit lonely. One day she bent down to drink from a river and saw someone looking back at her. It was her own reflection! That gave her a wonderful idea: make tiny people out of yellow clay, shaped just like herself. She made one, held it in her palm, and blew on it gently — "hoo—" — and the little clay person blinked, hopped down, and called out "Mama!" But the world was so big. Making them one by one would take forever! So Nüwa thought of a much faster way. Can you guess what it was?

"Pangu Creates the World" (盘古开天辟地, pán gǔ kāi tiān pì dì) is China's most famous creation myth. It was first written down about 1,800 years ago, in a book called *Sanwu Liji* (《三五历纪》). It tells how people in ancient China imagined the very beginning of the world. One little note: the giant axe in this episode comes from later folk retellings — the earliest book does not mention an axe.

Long, long ago, the world was like one giant egg — dark inside, with everything mixed together. In the egg slept a giant named Pangu. He slept for eighteen thousand years! When he woke up — CRACK! BOOM! — he split the egg open. The light parts floated up and became the sky. The heavy parts sank down and became the earth. But Pangu was worried: what if the sky and the earth closed up again? So he stood between them like a big pillar — his head pushing up the sky, his feet standing on the ground — for another eighteen thousand years... In the end, what did his eyes, his breath, and his hair turn into?

Confucius was famous for his great learning — yet when he stepped into the grand temple, he asked about *everything*, this and that. "Kong Rong Gives Up the Pears" (孔融让梨, kǒng róng ràng lí) comes from the *Book of the Later Han: Biography of Kong Rong* (《后汉书·孔融传》) — preserved in the *Kong Family Records* (《融家传》) cited by the Tang scholar Li Xian — the story of a clever four-year-old in the Eastern Han, over 1,800 years old.

A plate of pears, big and small, sweet and fragrant. "Kong Rong, you choose first!" said the grown-ups. The four-year-old stepped up, reached out — and picked the *smallest* pear of all. But why? Can you guess what he said that made every grown-up in the room smile?

"Giving Up Halfway" (半途而废, bàn tú ér fèi) — the phrase itself comes from the *Book of Rites: Doctrine of the Mean* (《礼记·中庸》): *"a noble person walks the path, and to give up halfway — that I cannot bear to do."* Today's tale comes from Fan Ye's *Book of the Later Han: Biographies of Exemplary Women — The Wife of Yue Yangzi* (《后汉书·列女传·乐羊子妻》), written during the Liu Song dynasty about the Eastern Han scholar Yue Yangzi and his wife — close to 1,600 years old.

Long ago, there was a young man named Yue Yangzi who left home to study far away. At first, he was full of confidence. But after a while, the studies felt too hard, he missed home, and so he packed up and came back. His wife was startled to see him. She didn't scold him with raised voice — instead, she walked over to her loom, where a long bolt of cloth was slowly taking shape, thread by careful thread. She picked up a pair of scissors and held them up to the cloth. Yue Yangzi gasped, "What are you doing?" His wife answered, very softly, with a single line — can you guess what she said?

"The Blind Men and the Elephant" (盲人摸象, máng rén mō xiàng) is an ancient Buddhist parable from India that traveled into China with the sutras — recorded in the *Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra* (《大般涅槃经》), the *Dīrgha Āgama* (《长阿含经》), and others, well over 1,000 years old.

One day, a great creature arrived in a town. It was tall and huge, with wide ears, a long curling trunk, and footsteps that seemed to shake the ground. Some blind men nearby heard about it and were curious — what *was* an elephant, really? Someone led them up close. The first man touched a leg — thick and round — and said, "An elephant is like a great pillar!" The second touched an ear, wide and soft, and said, "No, no — an elephant is like a big fan!" The third touched the trunk, long and curling, and said, "You're both wrong — an elephant is like a long rope!" The fourth touched the belly, broad and round, and said, "You're all mistaken — an elephant is clearly like a wall!" Their voices grew louder and louder... so who, in the end, was right?

"Three Fen Deep into the Wood" (入木三分, rù mù sān fēn) comes from Zhang Huaiguan's *Shu Duan: Wang Xizhi* (《书断·王羲之》) of the Tang dynasty — the story of the great Eastern Jin calligrapher Wang Xizhi, nearly 1,300 years old.

Wang Xizhi was the most celebrated calligrapher of his time — everyone praised his characters. But his beautiful brush didn't come overnight. As a boy, he practiced every single day. If a stroke didn't look right, he'd write it again. When his hand grew sore, he'd rest, then start again. There was a small pool in his courtyard where he rinsed his brushes — over the years, the water in that pool turned ink-black from all his practice. One day he wrote some characters on a wooden plank. Later, a craftsman tried to scrape the ink off so the wood could be reused. He shaved off a layer — and the ink was still there. Another layer — *still there*. The ink seemed to have soaked deep into the wood. How could that be?

"One Cry to Astonish the World" (一鸣惊人, yī míng jīng rén) is a classic Chinese tale, over 2,000 years old, first recorded in *Han Feizi: Yu Lao* (《韩非子·喻老》) of the Warring States period — the story of King Zhuang of Chu and his minister Wu Ju. (Sima Qian's *Records of the Grand Historian: Biographies of the Jesters* also tells a parallel version about King Wei of Qi.)

The State of Chu had a king named King Zhuang. At first, everyone thought he was a bit strange — he hardly said anything important, hardly did anything important, and his ministers grew anxious watching him. One minister named Wu Ju thought of a clever way to speak up. Instead of giving advice directly, he said, "Your Majesty, I've heard there is a great bird on the mountain. For three years, it has not flown. For three years, it has not made a sound. What sort of bird do you suppose it is?" King Zhuang slowly looked up, met Wu Ju's eyes... what do you think the king said?

"Sending Coal in the Snow" (雪中送炭, xuě zhōng sòng tàn) is a saying that first appeared in Song dynasty poetry — the Southern Song poet Fan Chengda even wrote the line "no need to send coal in the snow." Today's tale is a small story written around the idiom, hoping to leave little listeners with its gentle lesson.

In the cold heart of winter, the north wind howled and snowflakes drifted down. In a village, an old woman lived alone in a small hut. One day she opened her coal basket and found it empty — without coal, the stove wouldn't light, and the room grew colder and colder. Next door lived a little boy named A-Ming. While sweeping snow that morning, he noticed no smoke rising from grandma's chimney and thought it odd. He hurried over, knocked, peeked in, and saw the empty basket — he understood at once. He ran home and, with his mother, packed up a basket of coal and a thick scarf... snow was still falling, but what would happen to grandma's little hut now?

"Standing in the Snow at Cheng's Door" (程门立雪, chéng mén lì xuě) comes from *History of Song: Biography of Yang Shi* (《宋史·杨时传》), compiled by Toqto'a and others during the Yuan dynasty — telling the story of the Northern Song scholar Yang Shi, who once stood in the snow outside the home of his master Cheng Yi. Nearly 900 years old.

In the Song dynasty there lived a devoted student named Yang Shi. He had heard of a great scholar named Cheng Yi and went, with a friend, to ask his counsel. That day was bitterly cold — and halfway there, snowflakes began to fall. One flake, two flakes, three flakes, the snow grew thicker and thicker. The two arrived at Master Cheng's door and gave a soft knock. A servant whispered, "The master is resting." The friend said, "Let's come back later, then." But Yang Shi shook his head and decided to wait. The snow kept falling, slowly burying their shoes. When Master Cheng finally woke and opened the door... what did he see?

"Mao Sui Recommends Himself" (毛遂自荐, máo suì zì jiàn) comes from *Records of the Grand Historian: Biographies of Lord Pingyuan and Yu Qing* (《史记·平原君虞卿列传》) by Sima Qian of the Western Han dynasty — the tale of Mao Sui, a retainer of Lord Pingyuan of Zhao, who put himself forward to join an embassy to the State of Chu. Over 2,000 years old.

During the Warring States era, the State of Zhao had a famous nobleman named Lord Pingyuan, with many retainers in his household. One day, a great matter required him to take twenty men with him to seek help from the State of Chu. He picked nineteen — and then got stuck on the very last spot. From the back of the room, a man stepped forward. His name was Mao Sui. He had lived in Lord Pingyuan's household for three quiet years, never one to push himself forward. "Please let me come along." Lord Pingyuan studied him: "A truly able person is like a sharp awl in a sack — its point pokes through quickly. You've been with me three years, and I've never heard of any special talent of yours. Why do you think you should go?" Mao Sui replied with a single calm sentence... can you guess what he said?

"Cao Chong Weighs the Elephant" (曹冲称象, cáo chōng chēng xiàng) was first recorded in *Records of the Three Kingdoms: Book of Wei* (《三国志·魏书·武文世王公传》) by Chen Shou of the Western Jin dynasty — the tale of Cao Cao's clever little son Cao Chong, over 1,700 years old.

One day, someone presented Cao Cao with an enormous elephant. Its four legs were like thick columns, its ears like two great fans, its long trunk swinging back and forth. Everyone wanted to know: just how much did it weigh? But in those days, there was no scale big enough for an elephant. Someone suggested building a giant scale; someone else suggested cutting the elephant into pieces — Cao Cao shook his head at every idea.

"Opening a Book Is Always Helpful" (开卷有益, kāi juàn yǒu yì) comes from Wang Pizhi's *Records of Conversations at Mianshui* (《渑水燕谈录》) of the Northern Song, telling of Emperor Taizong of Song and his daily reading of the great encyclopedia *Taiping Yulan* — nearly 1,000 years old.

Emperor Taizong of the Song dynasty had countless matters to attend to, yet he kept one daily habit: reading. In those days, there was an enormous work called the *Taiping Yulan*, with pages piled up like a small mountain. Worried courtiers urged him, "Your Majesty is already so busy — won't all this reading wear you out?" Emperor Taizong just smiled. "Every time I open a book, I gain something. Learning one more thing, understanding one more idea — how could that ever be useless?" And what exactly did he learn from all those books?

27 May 202600:06:19

"Searching for a Horse by the Picture in the Book" (按图索骥, àn tú suǒ jì) tells the tale of the son of Bole, the legendary judge of horses. The earlier phrase "按图索骏" appears in Ban Gu's *Book of Han: Biography of Mei Fu* (《汉书·梅福传》) of the Eastern Han, and Ming dynasty scholar Yang Shen later fixed the idiom in *Yilin Fashan* (《艺林伐山》) with the little story of "Bole's son looking up a horse in the book."

Long ago there was a man who could spot a fine horse with one glance — his name was Bole. He wrote down all his know-how in a book, with drawings of what a fine horse should look like: what kind of forehead, what kind of eyes, what kind of hooves. Bole's son flipped through it and thought, "With this book, *I* can find a thousand-li horse too!" Off he went, book in hand. Down the road, he spotted something crouched in the grass — a great big toad with a bulging forehead, bright round eyes, and strong legs that hopped just so. Beaming with excitement, he scooped it up and brought it home. Can you guess what his father said?

25 May 202600:06:16

"Swallowing a Date Whole" (囫囵吞枣, hú lún tūn zǎo) traces back to Zhu Xi's *Classified Conversations of Master Zhu* (《朱子语类》) of the Southern Song, where "swallowing a date whole" was used as a metaphor for reading without really thinking. Bai Ting later spun a little story around the metaphor in his Yuan dynasty *Zhanyuan Jingyu* (《湛渊静语》), and it's been retold ever since.

A man loved listening to advice about staying healthy. One day an old gentleman said, "Pears are good for the teeth, but too many upset the stomach. Dates are good for the body, but too many bother the teeth." The man thought hard, then slapped his forehead: "I've got it! With pears, I'll chew but never swallow. With dates, I'll just swallow the whole thing — best of both worlds!" The others hurried to stop him: "You can't swallow a date whole — you'll choke!" But he waved them off, tipped his head back, and gulped the date down in one go... how do you think that turned out?
