Today’s electronic treat of an interview features DJ/composer and technologist Robert Henke AKA Monolake. He is a German computer music artist working in the fields of audiovisual installation, music and performance. Born in Munich, and now lives in Berlin. Many of his works use multiple channels of audio or are specifically conceived for unique locations and their individual properties. For the past few years, he has been exploring the artistic usage of high power lasers in his installations and performances. As Monolake, Robert’s minimal, dub-influenced techno helped establish the sound of the Chain Reaction label in Berlin. Most famously, he helped to develop Ableton Live, and designed the Atlantic Waves software for performing live with other producers in different countries simultaneously. Morton Subotnick is one of the great pioneers of electronic music and multi-media performance, and an innovator in works involving instruments and other media including interactive computer music systems. He also co-developed the incredible Buchla synthesiser. At 91, he still composes, performs and lectures about his love of electronic and interactive music. This exclusive episode of Electronically Ours (originally only available via our Patreon) is very special and features two old friends of Martyn, who are both luminaries at the top of their professions – Professor Malcolm Garrett, legendary graphic designer for an amazing range of artists including The Human League, Heaven 17, British Electric Foundation, The Buzzcocks, Simple Minds, Duran Duran, Peter Gabriel amongst literally thousands of others. He has been a close collaborator with Martyn for over 40 years, and will be onstage for the first time controlling images for the forthcoming Heaven 17 present Reproduction and Travelogue shows in September. Alex McDowell’s career started in London, as an art student at the Central School of Art and Design and in 1975, he and Sebastian Conran staged the Sex Pistols first headline concert. His first commission as a designer was for Iggy Pop’s Soldier album, and he has since become one of Hollywood’s leading production designers, creating video designs for many famous 80’s artists including Madonna, Michael Jackson, ZZ Top, Sade, Depeche Mode and Queen. This led to creating worlds for major Hollywood films - Minority Report, Fight Club, The Terminal, Corpse Bride and Man Of Steel, amongst many others. He now specialises in ‘world building’ – designing complex digital worlds as a narrative tool when creating storylines for major movie makers.
