DML 21: Dyslexic Voices - Mike Jones12 Oct 202000:45:55

Mike Jones is sharing his dyslexia journey on the show.  It's not an easy story to tell, since growing up with dyslexia can be painful and challenging for so many children.  By sharing his story, Mike hopes to bring more awareness of dyslexia to all schools and educators.

Did you know that the short film, MICAL, was based on Mike's story when he was seven years old and struggling to learn to read?  When Mike was identified with dyslexia, his teachers were still unable and unwilling to help him.  He couldn't even spell his own name.  Mike's mother, Pat Jones, made the decision to learn everything she could about dyslexia, including the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach to teaching reading.  She homeschooled Mike using what she learned about OG and developed games to help him learn.  Pat changed Mike's future.  Mike learned to not give up on himself.  Now, Mike and his wife, Tiffany James, support families through their company, Nessy Learning.  Mike has adapted his mother's games into digital games (apps) for children to learn to read.

Either way . . . the first day of school is coming sooner than later.

114 | Write Down Your Hangcliffers18 Jul 202200:12:11

One of the many things I love about raising a daughter with dyslexia is that I learn from her every single day.  I love the way she sees the world and I love even more how she shares the things she sees and thinks about.

That's where hangcliffers was born!

It started out as a typical night where we were watching a tv series with our daughter and this episode was the last one for the season. It ended without really ending.  You know, the ones where you are left not knowing what happened next. My daughter stood up and said with a very serious face and tone she said to us “that was a real hangcliffer.”

I've had many moms raising dyslexic kiddos share similar stories.  So, how are we going to remember all of these amazing words, expressions, and ideas of our kids growing up?  Write them down.

Listen to learn the benefits of writing it down in letters to your kiddo and how to get started today.

108 | Did you ask for help today? If no, why not?27 Apr 202200:22:05

As moms, it's as if there is this unwritten rule that we have to do it all (for everyone).   The more you do the better you feel, or at least think you will feel and others will know you are a good mom.   Right?  No.  Letting others influence your days is a recipe for disaster and overwhelm.   Spoiler alert:  I already know you are a fantastic mom!

But, in reality, we decide how to spend our days, what makes us happy, and who/what we let into our day-to-day lives.   When you don't choose how to spend your time, the result is feeling stressed, tired, and left feeling unproductive at the end of the day.  What if there was another way? A way to get it done (or not) and feel happy and accomplished at the end of your day.

In this episode, you will learn the 3 ways to conquer your overwhelm and become calmer to enjoy your life to its fullest.  Doesn't that sound great?

107 | Transition Planning 25 Apr 202200:17:37

Transitions are part of life - our kids will have many transitions in the next ten years from elementary to middle school, middle school to high school, and high school to college and careers.  Each stage is a time for growth, excitement, and new challenges.

For dyslexics, it can be a stressful time too, navigating new and challenging academics, relationships, and figuring out who they are and want to be.  As moms, we can help ease the stress and anxiety that our dyslexic kids may be feeling by being better prepared for the transitions.

In this episode,  you will learn tips to help make each transition a little bit easier.

Honestly, I love my to-do list.  There is something so satisfying when I mark off an item.  What about you?  Do you live by a to-do list?

Recently, I attended a dyslexia event and the speaker challenged us to stop doing some things.  It got me thinking about a Not-To-Do List.  Do you have one?  This is the list you don't have that you need (today).

In this episode, Nicole is sharing the Top 3 Not To-Do List - yep, you can stop doing these things now.  Doesn't that sound great?
