| Laura Story - So Long, Normal | 27 Oct 2021 | 00:32:56 | |
It's always tempting to try to live up to the expectations other people have of us. Even if our past is marked by success, it's burdensome to try to keep that up. Normally, most of us keep at it- we keep striving the fulfill the expectations we think people have of who we are and what we do. It can feel overwhelming or frightening to imagine dealing with their disappointment with us. Fortunately, we don't have to get stuck in normal- we are new creations every day. This week on the podcast we dig into that conversation with my friend, Laura Story. About Laura and her Latest Book In the shifting (or even collapsing) of everything familiar in life, you don’t have to wring your hands in fear. Push past the loss of your “normal” with bestselling author and Bible teacher Laura Story, and step into the new story God is writing for you. You've been faced with circumstances beyond your control. Your plans are altered. But you have the blessing of a Father who loves you enough to take off the training wheels and place his beloved child in the best possible scenario for your good and growth. So Long, Normal guides you to leave behind the idols of comfort, caution, and routine so you can live strong and well, even when life takes an unwelcome turn. In her confessional, conversational style, worship leader, Bible teacher, and Christian recording artist Laura Story weaves her own personal stories with examples from Scripture of characters whose lives were upended by unexpected (and undesired) change. P.S. We'd like to extend to you a free month of our exclusive Bob Weekly content. All you have to do is click this link and sign up for a month of video teachings and a guided curriculum. Also on the episode: Producer & Co-host : Scott Schimmel Living a focused, engaged life of love, adventure, and impact shouldn't be a mystery. It's what we're all wired for, it's what we all long for. But, it's not the norm. From all the places I've traveled to and the people I've met, I know that most people don't experience that kind of life. They feel... Like they're missing out on a different life, a life that others seem to experience. That it should've all just worked out by now, but it hasn't. Frankly, like they're languishing- and this must be as good as it gets. But, there's so much more... That's why we started putting these digital courses together. I can't travel everywhere, and not everyone can travel to me. But, what if there was a way to share life together and walk through these simple ideas I've been learning? Before, we've released these courses one at a time. Then we'd close the registration. But through the pandemic, we learned that a LOT of people want to keep growing, and they're looking for a framework they can trust. So, we put them all together- 6 interactive digital courses. Two specifically designed to help you identify and unleash your big ambitions. One for budding authors. Another for speakers. A course for your family. A course for your career. With more coming in the future. And, since we already have Bob Weekly as a monthly subscription for exclusive content, we threw that in there, too. | Philip Yancey - Putting Faith Back Together | 20 Oct 2021 | 00:33:09
If you’ve participated in a community of faith before, you’ve probably quickly realized what most people eventually discover- it’s filled with a bunch of imperfect people. Whether you go to a megachurch or a local community church, it’s not uncommon for us to have experiences that get us more than a little off-kilter and disoriented about our faith. Sometimes, we can even get the wires all crossed and mistake who God is with what people speaking in His name do. The question is, how do we think through our faith and our relationship to the church well? How can we integrate our experiences and rediscover a faith in God that’s marked by love and grace? I doubt there’s anyone who can speak more wisely about that than Philip Yancey. Philip Yancey has authored over 25 books, in which he has wrestled with God, with the Church, and with fellow believers. After surviving a church background of what he now calls “toxic faith,” he ultimately came to know a God of grace and beauty. With a journalistic, story-telling style, he invites readers to accompany him as he probes the deepest mysteries of the Christian faith, and challenges readers to live as followers of Jesus. Many have done so. His books have sold more than 15 million copies in English, and have been translated into 40 languages worldwide. Philip’s bestselling titles include What’s So Amazing About Grace? and The Jesus I Never Knew. His most recent book is a memoir, Where the Light Fell, released by Convergent Books on October 5th. Philip Yancey and his wife lived in downtown Chicago before moving to the foothills of Colorado, where they enjoy mountain climbing, skiing, wildlife, and many other delights of the Rocky Mountains. | Levi Lusko - Rediscovering Childlike Faith | 13 Oct 2021 | 00:29:35
With all of the serious things happening in the world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or even bummed out. It’s hard to go through your normal routines and carry out your obligations while carrying the stress of the world on your shoulders. Sometimes, if you’re like me, you feel a level of anxiety to fix everything, or at least do something heroic to make a big splash and try to change where everything is headed. But God isn’t asking us to be a hero necessarily, he’s asking us to participate. What’s the best way to jump in? With the same playful, open-hearted attitude a kid would have. To show up, ready to play, willing to say yes to the adventure God has for us. This week on the Dream Big Podcast, we invited my friend Levi Lusko to share his recent children’s book and the message behind it we all need to hear. Levi Lusko is the founder and lead pastor of Fresh Life Church, located in Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, Utah and everywhere online. He is the bestselling author of “Through the Eyes of a Lion,” “Swipe Right,” and “I Declare War.” Levi also travels the world speaking about Jesus. Through television, online streaming, and Levi and his wife Jennie’s bestselling books, their ministry reaches around the world. They enjoy family days, getting outside, good coffee and sharing new experiences. The Lusko family includes one son: Lennox, and four daughters: Alivia, Daisy, Clover, and Lenya, who is in Heaven. | John Mark Comer - The Flag in the Sand | 06 Oct 2021 | 00:38:06
Sometimes, without realizing it, we can find ourselves off track from the life we’re meant to live. Or, to put it another way, we wake up one day with a sense that we’re living someone else’s life; we’re in the wrong story. Maybe you might even say it’s a good story- it’s just not the right one for you. Most of us didn’t find a lot of clarity about ourselves- our identity and purpose especially, when we were younger. No one helped us wrestle with the big questions, but we had to make decisions about what to do with our lives nonetheless. So we went down a path hoping it would all work out. But what do you do when you discover that the path you’re on doesn’t lead you to the person you’re becoming, or it doesn’t help you express your deepest values? It’s those types of questions that remind me to talk with my wise friend, John Mark Comer. John Mark is the founding pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, Oregon, a teacher and writer with Practicing the Way, and the author of six books: The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, God has a Name, Garden City, Loveology, My Name is Hope, and his newest: Live No Lies. | Max Lucado - Courage for Today and Hope for Tomorrow | 29 Sep 2021 | 00:23:32
We just returned from a bus tour, visiting with friends from Tulsa to Charlotte. One consistent theme I heard from hundreds of conversations was about finding hope again after nearly two years of what our world has gone through. In the words of my friend, Max, “Don’t measure the height of the mountain. Ponder the power of the one who made it. Don’t tell God how big your storm is. Tell the storm how big your God is. Your problem is not that your problem is so big, but that your view of God is too small.” Listen in for more of his wise words in this week’s episode. Max Lucado is a pastor, speaker, and bestselling author who, in his own words, “writes books for people who don’t read books.” He serves the people of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, and his message is for the hurting, the guilty, the lonely, and the discouraged: God loves you; let him. His newest book, You Were Made for This Moment: Courage For Today and Hope for Tomorrow (Thomas Nelson, September 2021), is a relevant and timely release for a society still reeling from racial divides, political strife, and a global pandemic. Also on the episode: Producer & Co-host : Scott Schimmel Living a focused, engaged life of love, adventure, and impact shouldn't be a mystery. | Paul Burns - Driven by Identity Not Circumstances | 15 Sep 2021 | 00:30:51
It’s easy to get distracted by our circumstances- whether it’s how our body feels, an urgent problem to solve at work, a house filled with noisy kids, or the latest news headline. Our distractions are just that- distractions from what’s most important. So what does it look like to navigate through those distractions? We can’t control the world around us, but we can develop habits that help us stay focused and centered. There aren’t many people I’ve run across who do better at living a focused, centered life than my friend, Paul Burns. Paul Burns is a believer, builder, maker, dreamer, husband, father and also happens to be a senior executive at Twitter. At Twitter, Paul helps brands, businesses and people see the power of conversation to change the world. Paul believes that when we begin to have more open, healthy and loving conversations (especially about the things we disagree on), we are one step closer to looking more like Jesus. When he's not at Twitter, Paul helps lead a non-profit organization called Matthew House where he helps inspire hope, restore dignity and empower independence for refugees around the world (matthewhouse.ca). Paul lives in Toronto with his wife Olivia and two boys Anderson & Wesley and can be found on Twitter and Instagram @paulburns Also on the episode: Producer & Co-host : Scott Schimmel The Dream Big Academy Living a focused, engaged life of love, adventure, and impact shouldn't be a mystery. | Sheila Walsh - Choosing Authenticity | 08 Sep 2021 | 00:37:36
We all want to be known- it’s a deep need inside of everyone. We want to have people in our lives we can count on to hold onto us even when we lose it a little. But, that gets tricky. On one hand, we don’t want to be a bummer to our friends. We don’t want to weigh them down. On the other hand, we want to be people others can count on. We want to build ideas, companies, and lives that are strong and put together. But, when life gets too much, or when we experience loss or trauma, the worst thing possible is to realize you’re on your own. Maybe you’re going through something difficult right now. Or, perhaps you have something painful that you’ve been holding onto. If you don’t, you certainly will in the future- there’s no escaping hardship, pain, or loss no matter what path you’re on. So, what will it look like to build the type of authentic connections you really need? I’m so glad we could have my friend, Sheila Walsh, on the podcast to help us navigate these big ideas. ??Sheila Walsh grew up in Scotland and has spoken to over six million women around the world. Her passion is being a Bible teacher, making God’s Word practical, and sharing her own story of how God met her when she was at her lowest point and lifted her up again. Sheila loves writing, has sold almost six million books and is a national bestselling author. She is also the cohost of the television program Life Today, airing in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia, with almost one billion potential viewers daily. Calling Texas home, Sheila lives in Dallas with her husband, Barry; her son, Christian; and two little dogs, Tink and Maggie, who rule the roost. | Richard Rohr - Finding & Living From the Center | 01 Sep 2021 | 00:35:00
In our busy, frenetic world, it’s easy to slip into a mode of living that looks and feels a lot like autopilot. We go through the motions, move through our calendars, and rinse and repeat each day. In so many ways the life we long for and the life we’re designed for remains out of our grasp. So, for so many people, we try to shake things up. We sign up for a sprint triathlon. We announce to our friends we’re launching a podcast. We start planning a vacation or a bathroom remodel. For a time, it works. We feel more present, alive, and focused. But then the autopilot mode returns. What does it look like to find an alternative reality? To lean into a different way of thinking, and a new way of living? I can’t think of anyone who can help us find that way better than Father Richard Rohr. Father Richard Rohr is a Franciscan friar and ecumenical teacher who bears witness to the deep wisdom of Christian mysticism and traditions of action and contemplation.?He is the founder of the?Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC)?and academic Dean of the Living School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he has lived since 1986. For over fifty years, Father Richard’s personal experience of God’s infinite and transforming love has inspired his lifelong work of helping to remove the barriers that keep people from knowing God’s love for themselves. He teaches how God’s grace guides us to our birthright as beings made of Divine Love. He is the author of numerous books, including? The Universal Christ, The Wisdom Pattern, Everything Belongs, and?Falling Upward. READ: Universal Christ, by Richard Rohr Resource page: http://universalchrist.org Book URL: https://store.cac.org/collections/all/products/the-universal-christ Description: In his decades as a globally recognized teacher, Richard Rohr has helped millions realize what is at stake in matters of faith and spirituality. Yet Rohr has never written on the most perennially talked about topic in Christianity: Jesus. Most know who Jesus was, but who was Christ? Is the word simply Jesus’s last name? Too often, Rohr writes, our understandings have been limited by culture, religious debate, and the human tendency to put ourselves at the center. Drawing on scripture, history, and spiritual practice, Rohr articulates a transformative view of Jesus Christ as a portrait of God’s constant, unfolding work in the world. “God loves things by becoming them,” he writes, and Jesus’s life was meant to declare that humanity has never been separate from God—except by its own negative choice. When we recover this fundamental truth, faith becomes less about proving Jesus was God, and more about learning to recognize the Creator’s presence all around us, and in everyone we meet. Thought-provoking, practical, and full of deep hope and vision, The Universal Christ is a landmark book from one of our most beloved spiritual writers, and an invitation to contemplate how God liberates and loves all that is. CONSPIRE conference Friday, Sept. 24 – Sunday, Sept. 26 In this time of great unknowing, how do we expand our sense of self to include love, healing, and forgiveness—not just for ourselves and those like us, but for the entire world? Join thousands of spiritual seekers from across the world...
| Taylor Hughes - The Road to Wonder | 25 Aug 2021 | 00:27:10 | |
For some people, it’s a really big deal to feel like they’re in control. When life throws them curveballs (or worse), cue the anxiety or frustration. For others, they spend quite a bit of energy trying to avoid complexity or surprises. They prefer life to happen in a predictable way, and like it when they can switch into autopilot mode. But, reality doesn’t work either way. In the wise words of my pal, Taylor Hughes, "Your life is not a puzzle to be solved, it is a mystery to enjoy!" Sometimes we need to be redirected to be able to see the wonder happening all around us. Taylor Hughes fell in love with the art of illusion when his parents bought him a magic kit for his 7th birthday. More than 30 years and 3,000 shows later, Taylor has become known for his signature style of Magic Storytelling. There’s very little in life that’s predictable or promised- except for the guarantee of the unexpected to happen. Whether it’s a small thing like getting stuck in traffic or a big thing like getting stuck inside for over a year, how do you find yourself responding? Although we can’t predict or control what happens to us, we can certainly choose how we’ll respond. Nobody more beautifully demonstrates that than my dear friend, Katherine Wolf. Katherine is a communicator and advocate. She married her husband Jay in 2004 and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Their son, James was born in 2007, and six months later Katherine’s life nearly ended with a catastrophic stroke. Miraculously, she survived and continues her recovery to this day, including having a miracle baby, John in 2015. Katherine and Jay have shared their journey of steadfast hope through their books, Hope Heals and Suffer Strong, and at speaking events both live and online before millions. Together, they founded Hope Heals camp, a community for families with disabilities like them. Katherine, Jay, and their two sons live in the Atlanta area. | Charlotte Gambill - Saying Yes to Adventure | 11 Aug 2021 | 00:25:10
One of the most consistent themes we keep returning to is the theme of daring to take great risks. There’s something hardwired in so many of us that want to avoid risks at all costs, so we create lives that are routine, consistent, and safe. The problem is, as the famous quote says, we can easily slip into “leading lives of quiet desperation”, and miss out on who we’re meant to be. For me, it often takes seeing a real-life example of what an adventurous life looks like that knocks me out of my self-preservation orientation. Charlotte Gambill is that person for me. With over 25 years in church leadership, Charlotte has committed her life to teach, train and invest in others with a passion to see each person connect with their God given purpose. Both locally and globally she has become a sought-after speaker and teacher. From training teams to helping bring strategic leadership and discipleship in a variety of church settings across the world. She is also the founder of Cherish women’s conference, a global gathering of women and has launched We Are One and the Cherish foundation initiatives that are bringing the power of kindness into the most broken of places. Author of 14 books, co-founder of the Dare To Be movement, teaching pastor at Church of the Highlands, USA. Charlotte also serves alongside her husband Steve leading Life Church with five campuses across Europe. Her deepest joy in all of this is building her family first. Happily married to Steve for over 25 years they have two teenage children Hope Cherish and Noah Brave. | Cam Greenwood - Outside the Status Quo | 04 Aug 2021 | 00:26:53
Without realizing it, we can easily slip into a way of doing life that’s overly predictable and monotonous. The status quo is far from the life that God wants us to live. When you’re feeling overwhelmed with the predictability of your own life, one of the most important moves you can make is to get outside of yourself. Cam Greenwood is a guy that’s going to push you to make that move. Cam’s the co-founder (alongside his wife, Elise) and chief pioneer of Zorali - the Australian outdoor brand that's on a mission to get the world outside. Cam’s adventurous spirit has attracted an abundance of attention and he is recognised as one of Australia's most creative entrepreneurs under the age of 30 - being featured on Smart Company's ‘Smart 30 Under 30’ list. His passion for encouraging people to expand their thinking has also led him to share his unique view of the world across Australia & beyond on many different stages and forums. For Cam, life is an adventure. An invisible path is even more exhilarating than the most breathtaking of hikes. And as long as there are more corners to explore, Cam will keep seeking what's around the next one. Ultimately, Cam’s goal is to inspire people to believe that all things are possible when you actively engage in a life driven more strongly by curiosity than by fear. | Scott Hamilton - Skating Into Olympic-Sized Joy | 28 Jul 2021 | 00:34:52
One thing that you won't miss if you're tuning in to watch the Summer Olympics is loss and disappointment, more so even than victory and celebration. The games, and the journey to get there, are filled with grief, setbacks, rejection, loss, and pain. The question for every athlete who experiences loss is this: what will you do with it? Will you allow it to define you and predict your path? The same question applies to us because no one escapes those types of experiences. The most recognized male figure skating star in the world, Scott Hamilton has won 70 titles, awards and honors including an Emmy Award nomination, induction into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame and a privileged member of the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. In 1984, Scott captured the attention of the world with his Olympic Gold medal performances in Saravejo and since has shared his love and enthusiasm for the sport as a analyst/commentator, performer, producer and best-selling author (Finish First: Winning Changes Everything, 2018; The Great Eight, 2009; Landing It, 1999). He further inspires others as a speaker, humanitarian, and as a cancer and pituitary brain tumor survivor. After losing his mother to cancer, then becoming a survivor himself, Scott turned activist, launching the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation (Cancer Alliance for Research, Education and Survivorship). He founded several education and survivorship programs including Chemocare.com and the 4th Angel Mentoring Program. Events such as Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer and An Evening with Scott Hamilton & Friends galas fund research into treatments that treat the cancer and spare the patient harm. Scott recently launched Live Your Days – a call to being present and not let day after day pass, just going through the checklist of life. It is about putting down your phone to enjoy the people and moments that God has given you, because we don’t control the number of days we have on this earth, we only control what we do with them. The online platform includes a weekly podcast interview, 30-day life challenges with easy to implement tips and merchandise, with proceeds benefiting the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation. He is also the founder of the Scott Hamilton Skating Academy at the Ford Ice Centers in Antioch, TN and Bellevue, TN, where he may frequently be found coaching Learn to Skate students and sharing his love of skating. In what little free time remains, Scott can be found on the golf course and enjoys spending time with his wife Tracie and four children – at their home in Nashville, Tennessee. | Tim Timmons - Discovering God Here and Now | 21 Jul 2021 | 00:30:39
If you've ever found yourself with a full schedule but an empty heart, you're in good company. It's far too easy to get caught up in our tasks and commitments and miss out on the presence of God who's always with us. Tim Timmons is one of my friends who reminds me that God is always available in the here and now. After two decades of ministry and a lifetime of looking for Jesus, Tim is no stranger to pain, cancer, sorrow, failure, joy and hope. “For most of my life,” Tim shares, “I found myself working FOR God, and not WITH Him, which led to my tired soul desperately searching for more. Saying, ‘Jesus, is this all there is?’” When Tim is home, he, Hilary (his wife of 23 years), their four children, and friends gather all week long, including Sunday mornings (Journey Church), and encourage each other to put Jesus into practice in the regular rhythms of our days. Tim has a new album with Integrity Music, titled HERE, which is now available. | Lysa TerKeurst - Seeing Beautiful Again | 07 Jul 2021 | 00:29:24
It's far too easy to take things too seriously. It makes sense- life is intense, especially the long season we just went through. | Todd Tilghman - On the Edge of Ambition | 30 Jun 2021 | 00:25:56
Some of us can sense the moments or seasons when we know deep down that the path we're on is no longer working. Whether you'd describe it as a deep dissatisfaction or a draw towards something else, sometimes it feels like we're on the edge of discovering our next ambition. For anyone right now feeling like it's about time for a change, I can't wait for you to listen to Todd Tilghman's journey on the podcast this week. Todd Tilghman is a husband and father passionate about family, adoption, loving people, bringing joy and music. Though Todd is best known as the winner of Season 18 on NBC’s The Voice, he has been involved with music and singing his entire life. Todd sang his first song in church at age eight and has spent the years since singing for the love of singing. It’s difficult to place Todd’s music into genre constraints as he simply sings what he experiences. Todd has spent his adulthood in full-time ministry and currently resides in Meridian, Mississippi, with his wife, Brooke, and their eight children. Todd and Brooke have a new book coming out June 2021 titled Every Little Win: How Celebrating Small Victories can Lead to Big Joy and Todd is currently working on music for his debut album. | Natalie Decker - Steering Towards the Finish Line | 23 Jun 2021 | 00:26:56
It's tempting to look at someone who's been successful and assume it was an easy ride for them. For most people though, success didn't come easy at all. They pushed through a bunch of obstacles and kept persevering through a variety of setbacks. Confronting fear and anxiety, tolerating a lot of risks, maintaining a relentless focus on an ambition despite the odds or opinions- those are the ingredients that differentiate folks who make it and those who don't. And it's in those realities that we develop the resolve that will sustain us no matter what comes. This week I'm so thrilled for my new friend and Nascar racing sensation, Natalie Decker, to join us in our ongoing conversation about dreaming big. | Michael W. Smith - Lessons From His Father | 16 Jun 2021 | 00:30:43
With Father's Day this Sunday, this is your official reminder- it's not too late to send a gift! Honoring the dads, granddads, and father figures in our lives is a great way to not only acknowledge them but also to give a nod to God for placing them in our lives. I know that Father's Day can be a mixed bag. Not everyone grew up with a kind, loving dad in their lives. There are many dads themselves who struggle with regret or heartbreak because of the broken relationships they have with their own kids. Regardless, this week is an invitation to lean into whatever you need to. It's a reminder that the story with your dad or as a dad isn't finished yet, there's still more to be learned, or still more to be grieved. So let the conversation I have with Michael W. Smith about his latest book be a guide to the reflection work you need to do. Michael W. Smith, a multi-platinum recording artist, has won three Grammy Awards, forty-five Dove Awards, an American Music Award, and has sold more than fifteen million albums. He has also given back to the global community, having raised funds to battle AIDS in Africa alongside U2’s Bono; started Rocketown, a safe haven for young people in Tennessee to meet and find hope; and has helped to improve more than 83,000 children’s lives through Compassion International. With a career spanning more than four decades, Smith has also starred in two films and written fourteen books, including his newest The Way of the Father: Lessons from My Dad, Truths about God. He lives with his wife, Debbie, in Franklin, Tennessee. They have five adult children and sixteen grandchildren. | Michelle Williams - Getting Real and Sorting it All Out | 26 May 2021 | 00:28:40
There are so many ways to get distracted from pursuing our big ambitions. Some of them, though, are much more serious than others- like depression and other mental health challenges. We can't separate our mental health from the rest of our lives- it's the foundation for everything. That's why it's so important to develop habits of getting real, being authentic and honest with friends, and seeking help when you need it. This week, on the Dream Big Podcast, we're engaging in a serious discussion about mental health with a dear friend of mine who is articulate and incredibly genuine. About Michelle Williams: Michelle Williams is a Grammy Award-winning recording artist and actress who rose to stardom as a member of the R&B mega group, Destiny’s Child, and most recently appeared as the Butterfly on Fox’s hit series, The Masked Singer. Her successful solo albums include Heart to Yours; Do You Know; Unexpected, which spawned the internationally charted single, “We Break the Dawn”; and Journey to Freedom, which featured groupmates Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland on the single, “Say Yes.” Also a talented actress, she debuted on Broadway in Aida (2003) and starred in productions of The Color Purple (2007), Chicago (2009–10), What My Husband Doesn't Know (2011) and Fela! (2013). Michelle is passionate about raising awareness about mental health and about sharing the lessons she has learned in her own struggle with depression. | Michael Hyatt - How to Win at Work | 19 May 2021 | 00:29:44
We talk often about what we do for work- it's one of the most common questions and points for conversation. But rarely do we talk about how we work, which matters as much if not more than what we do. When we're not approaching our work with thoughtful intentionality, when we aren't allowing others to speak into our approach, our calendars, and our commitments, we miss the opportunity to experience more joy, meaning, and impact. So this week I wanted to spend some time inviting Michael Hyatt, one of the most deliberate and thoughtful guys in the world, to guide us to be more reflective about work. Michael Hyatt is the founder and chairman of Michael Hyatt & Co., which helps leaders get the focus they need to win at work and succeed at life. | Ginny Owens - Listening to Another Voice | 05 May 2021 | 00:26:14
As we try to think through shifts in our careers or moving forward on our ambitions, nothing will debilitate us faster than focusing on the roadblocks or distractions. Our human nature will draw us to see things that just aren't there, or to miss the important pieces altogether. That's why I asked my dear friend, Ginny Owens, to shed some light on what it looks like to listen to another voice. Blind since age three, Ginny’s unique approach to music and books on darkness, life, and faith has a way of helping us see more clearly so we can find hope in the midst of suffering. Here's what she's learned: "You don't always get to choose your circumstances, but you do get to choose the story your life tells." A multiple award-winning and critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter, Ginny Owens became a household name when she was named the Gospel Music Association’s “New Artist of the Year” in 2000. In a meaningful career that now encompasses nearly two decades of music – including 10 full-length recordings, three EPs, a popular Christmas album, number one radio singles, and numerous film and television placements – Ginny’s heartbeat behind the music remains the same – to inspire others through sharing her own story in song. Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, a degenerative eye condition left Ginny completely blind by the tender age of three. As her vision diminished, her love of music and the piano expanded, and Ginny discovered songwriting as a window into her unseen world. The unique perspectives inspired by her vision impairment have resulted in inspirational lyrics paired with her diverse musicianship to afford her a space on an even more diverse set of stages, including the Sundance Film Festival, Lilith Fair and the White House, and recordings that transcend genre expectations. In November 2016, Owens launched the Love Be the Loudest campaign, an initiative in which a portion of album sales are donated to increasing the work of already thriving non-profit organizations. A 3-time Dove Award winner, Ginny’s songs have also been recorded by popular artists like Michael W. Smith, JJ Heller and Rachael Lampa, and the sought-after songstress was commissioned to write the song, “Fly Away,” for the 2017 film, Trafficked – a song that found itself among the song selections considered for the Academy Awards ballot for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture earlier this year. Ginny is also an author, co-authoring Transcending Mysteries, published by HarperCollins in 2015, and the multi-faceted performer also hosts a popular video blog entitled, “How I See It,” in which Owens helps viewers understand the ins-and-outs of living day-to-day life as a blind person. For more information on Ginny, or her philanthropic work with Love Be the Loudest, visit: GinnyOwens.com and LoveBeTheLoudest.com. Ginny's new book, "Singing in the Dark: Finding Hope in the Songs of Scripture" is now available.
