@mikewindyart sits down with drummer, DJ, and all-aroundmusical powerhouse Jerry Pentecost for a special episode his son Joey calls “Drumming South” — and it's one for the books.

From reshaping his career to spend more time with his twindaughters and amazing partner Amy ❤️ to dropping everything for a whirlwind 24-hour gig in Nashville while on tour with Bob Dylan, Jerry shares the highs, the hard truths, and the heart that keeps him going.

Despite a resume that includes 6 years with Old CrowMedicine Show, Jerry is still asked to “prove” himself — a reality for black musicians in country music. He opens up about that too, including a 2022 Nashville Scene article where he interviewed 30 other individuals who worked in and around Broadway about systemic racism and abusein nightlife spaces.

@starpoundball and @mikewindyart spent a lovely few hours @electricshedtn recently to talk about Aaron's new exhibit there. As we watched the sun move across the wall with the door open and an occasional breeze we moved from topic to topic with ease and occasionally back to ideas or "relevance" and what that means in any particular ecosystem and ways we've tricked ourselves into thinking what we are up to might be lesser than what might be happening in other ecosystems. We talked about his fascination with mind expansion and how sometimes it takes a REALLY long time to finish a painting and ideas he already has for new work. Jim Sherraden (like Aladdin) invited mikewindy and Joey Mitchell over to his studio to get some video and sit down for a long conversation in front of a cozy fire. Recently @mikewindyart made it out to East Tennessee to visit @randylpurcell in his new home studio that looks over a valley to the foothills of the great Smokey Mountains. In 2007 I started teaching at Flagler College as an adjunct and taught Sculpture III to exactly three students. In my second semester, I started teaching Sculpture 1 in the evenings and brought this old avocado green percolator coffee maker to class. Every Monday and Wednesday through 2010 before we did anything in class, we started by making a BIG pot of coffee. I had next to no money, so it was Folgers, powdered cream, and the cheapest sugar from the Winn Dixie on US 1, but anyone who had that class remembers that old percolator and the name we gave ourselves was the Sculpture One Coffee Club. April Webb was (we think) in that first-ever sculpture one class I taught. In the intervening years she has gotten her MFA, makes great art, and now works at FSU in Tallahassee for their Art Department! In this conversation we talk a lot about language and Danielle's delving into language in her creative practice that includes hand lettering and social practice strategies. We also dive into the project she is working on in her MFA program which may or may not have her visiting every Kroger in the southeastern US. She also talks about her company and the grad degree level of knowledge she gained from seeking a patent as well as the grief of when projects don't turn out the way we want them to. I didn't know Alvaro before this conversation. I have only admired his incredible water color/drawings on Instagram.

It was a really awesome conversation and he talks beautifully about the ways in which his advertising career is different than his art making and ways in which these adjacent practices also intersect. We talk about all sorts of things but an exciting piece is the Brazilian skateboarding scene in the mid 1980's. I'm so grateful that Pat took the time to talk with me for a few hours about his photography practice. It was so wonderful to hear how he dealt with coming to the work of great photographers before him by letting it blow his mind but not blow away his curiosity and interest in making images. I was fascinated to find out that he curated one of the first exhibits ever of Vivian Maier's photography at Wilco's Solid Sound Festival.
