| Why Draw Near? | 16 Oct 2020 | 00:03:24 | |
Thank you for listening to Draw Near. Before beginning, start with this short "trailer" of what Draw Near is about, why Fred and Kara chose this name, and the goal of this podcast. Let's grow together.
| Still Here | 21 Jan 2026 | 00:25:46 | |
Draw Near is still here—and this episode is all about returning to our "why."
After a season of being in and out, adjusting rhythms, and letting life take its course, we wanted to speak honestly about where Draw Near is right now and how God has been gently guiding us forward. This episode invites you into our discernment, hope, and trust.
Rooted in Isaiah 42:3, we reflect on the image of the Servant who does not break a bruised reed or extinguish a dimly burning wick. These words have shaped how we understand this season; It has not been a failure or fading, but as a time of careful tending. Jesus knows how to work with what is fragile. He repairs without rushing and restores without pressure.
We share how this passage has helped us see the recent shifts in Draw Near as an invitation to listen more closely, allowing the Spirit to breathe life into the work in more sustainable ways. The mission remains. The vision endures. What’s changing is the rhythm.
If you’ve ever wondered whether something good was slipping away—or whether a quieter season meant God was less present—this episode is for you.

| Surrender: Trusting God in the Waiting | 08 Oct 2025 | 00:46:08 | |
What does it mean to actually surrender to God?... and how do we begin to do it? There are seasons when God feels silent, when prayers go unanswered, or when our hearts wrestle with waiting. In those moments, surrender can sound like a nice idea but feel nearly impossible. So, where do we begin?
To continue your journey to total surrender to God, check out The Surrender Journal (https://www.drawnear.me/drawnearshop/p/the-surrender-journal) on the Draw Near Shop (https://www.drawnear.me/drawnearshop). It shares 30 uniquely crafted meditation exercises that will bring you to a place of surrender.
Reflection Questions from this episode:
What does it look like for you to actively surrender to God’s timing right now?
What truths or promises do you cling to when waiting feels hard?
Can you recall a time when waiting brought unexpected grace, growth, or healing?

| Eucharistic Revival w/Tim Glemkowski (MLMG Ep 2) | 13 Oct 2023 | 00:22:28 | |
In this first part of a two part discussion, we are joined by Tim Glemkowski, who is helping to lead the Eucharistic Revival in the United States. What is the Eucharistic Revival? How did it come about and is it necessary? What does it have to do with the mission and identity of the Church? And, how can the average lay person get involved? These are some of the many questions we seek to answer as we sit down to discuss this generational moment and growing national movement.

| The Still Small Voice: Finding God in Silence | 04 Oct 2023 | 00:35:50 | |
Why are so many uncomfortable with silence? We live in a world where there is always noise. There's always something to consume. We are never without entertainment. However, God is found in the silence; the still small voice. Why is this both scary and amazing? How can we set aside silence in our lives?

| Doubting Thomas (MLMG Ep. 1) | 27 Sep 2023 | 00:24:26 | |
Episode 1 of My Lord and My God: Doubting Thomas. MLMG is a show on the Eucharist that will make it's way over to be hosted on the Draw Near podcast page, too! Enjoy this additional weekly content, and if you're already a MLMG listener, enjoy these re-runs!
In our very first episode, we take some time to reflect on the words of St Thomas, "My Lord and My God." He speaks these words after his famous doubt... "Unless I stick my fingers in his wounds I will not believe." Why did Thomas say this? What can we learn from him? How is St Thomas' encounter with the risen Christ similar to what we are invited into every time we attend Mass and receive Communion? These are just some of the topics we will explore in this episode!

| Four Steps to Hearing God's Voice | 04 Sep 2023 | 00:24:11 | |
This episode serves as a companion and follow up to our "Does God Speak to Me?" episode. Here we are joined by Julie Storr, from Lectio the Liturgy. Julie presented at our recent Draw Near Retreat in which the theme was, "Hearing God's Voice." Julie offers some great practical steps for not only hearing the Lord's voice, but also building a lifestyle in which a relationship with God characterized by talking with your loving Father is not just a wish, but an actual lived experience, rooted in prayer, in Scripture, and in the life of the Holy Spirit.
Our journey with the Lord is one that is lived step by step! So many effective spiritual disciplines that help us grow in the life of prayer and relationship with Christ walk us through a process of steps (e.g. Lectio Divina, Ignatian Discernment, the ACTS prayer method, etc). If you are looking for a way to grow deeper in your relationship with Christ, if you are not sure if you have ever heard the Lord speak, this may just be a great place to start!
This four step method to hearing God's voice comes from Habakkuk 2:1-2
"I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower, and look out to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concering my complaint. And the LORD answered me: "Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.""
Step 1
Quiet Your Heart and Mind
Poistion yourself in faith to hear. I can hear Jesus' voice because he said so (Jn 10:1-5; Jn 1-:27)
Step 2
Put Yourself in Jesus' Presence
Prepare and quiet yourself to receive. Focus your spiritual eyes on what Jesus wants to give you. Use Scripture, music, art, to help reset your mind.
Ask God direct questions. Ask and you shall receive! (Mt 7:7)
(e.g. "What do you want me to know right now?" "How do you want to love me today?" "Who have you given me to love today?"
Step 3
Pay Attention
Pay attention to the spontaneous thougths, images or feelings in your heart that flow like a stream.
Step 4
Honor God's Words
Honor what the Lord has spoken by writing down what you receive. Do not doubt, just write.
This four step method was adapted from Enounter Ministries (https://encounterministries.us/) and the book, The Four Keys to Hearing God's Voice.
This adaptation is prepared and provided by Julie Storr. Learn more about her ministry by visiting lectiotheliturgy.com (lectiotheliturgy.com)

| Hearing God: Does God Speak to Me? | 30 Aug 2023 | 00:30:20 | |
We are back!!! In this episode, we reflect on our experiences coming back from our summer "break", unplanned home renovations and being a sheep. In all these things, the Lord was speaking! But what do we mean by the Lord was "speaking?" What does it mean to hear the Lord's voice? Is hearing the Lord's voice something we all can do? What does this have to do with sheep and our identity? These are the questions we seek to answer in the first of a series on "Hearing the Lord's Voice." Hearing the Lord's voice is not a privilege to be earned, but rather an inheritance, a promise from our loving Father. As such, we hope this series will help you grow in your relationship with the Lord, and hear the voice of our Shepherd.

Draw Near listeners may recognize that the name sounds familiar. | Swimming Upstream (ISAM PREVIEW 2: Ep. 2) | 26 May 2023 | 00:02:04
We have some exciting news to share with our listeners!
We have partnered with our long time ministry colleague and friend Eric Gallagher in forming a ministry apostolate. Phase 1 of this effort, launches on the Feast of Pentecost: May 28, 2023! Much more to come as it is not simply a podcast!
Draw Near listeners may recognize that the name sounds familiar. That's because the three of us drew inspiration from what we have seen and witnessed in our many years of combined ministry experience, in our time forming disciples, and of course in our own seeking to grow in relationship with Christ. We also drew inspiration from this: https://www.drawnear.me/blog/iseeamovement
You will hear more about this in our first two episodes which launch on Pentecost! In the meantime, enjoy these previews!

| By Whose Authority: Catholic teaching on Divine Revelation | 19 May 2023 | 00:46:15 | |
Why don't Catholics believe in sola scriptura (Scripture alone) as the authority of faith? This is a common question posed to Catholics, but are we prepared to answer it? In this episode of Draw Near, Fred and Kara take up this question of authority pulling from Scripture itself.
What is Divine Revelation? It is Scripture and Tradition, and the Magisterium of the Church is at the service of what has been divinely revealed. Through God's great love, he did not leave us to lean on our understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6). Instead, he gave his authority to leaders in the Church, and that authority has been handed on. He gave us a gift in the Church.
Church hierarchy Scripture passages mentioned:
Old Testament: Exodus 24 (there are others not mentioned in the show as well!)
New Testament: Lk 22: 31-32; Lk 8:51, 9:28; Lk 9:1, 22:28-30; Lk 10: 1, 17_**

| Lectio Reflection of Phil 4: How to follow Christ | 03 May 2023 | 00:29:14 | |
Continuing our series of lectio discussions, in this episode we look at one of Fred's favorite passages in all of Scripture: Phil 4:4-9. Paul's words to the Philippians are packed full of encouragement and guidance in how we are to follow Christ. Can we rejoice? More importantly, can we rejoice... always? Even in the midst of difficult circumstances? St Paul wrote to Timothy, "Follow me as I follow Christ." In many ways, those words are for us too! But what does that look like? How do we balance the "being" with the "doing"? Furthermore, in the face of negativity, discouragement, division, and so much in the world that can be troubling to our minds and hearts, how do we maintain our hope? How do we guard our hearts and minds to avoid temptation, fear, anxiety, and despair? The answers to these questions all form the core of our lectio discussion this week!

| I See a Movement | 19 Apr 2023 | 00:43:52 | |
In what is likely the most deeply personal, vulnerable, and passionate Draw Near discussion we have ever offered listeners, we decided to share exactly what is at the heart of what we do. What has the Lord put on our hearts? How does it shape our ministry together? The lives of our families? What do we see as our vision and goals? For the past three years we have talked about these things in passing, but never in a meaningful way. We decided its time to do just that!
It is our deepest prayer and desire that this episode, more than anything else, would inspire you to allow the Holy Spirit to move upon the waters of your heart, to enkindle the fire of God's love in your heart, so that you would be moved to renew the world around you through the joy of the Gospel! Even the greatest fire begins with but a spark!

| Crippled Beggars: A Reflection of Acts 3 | 29 Mar 2023 | 00:38:36 | |
In this episode we continue our Lenten lectio divina Scripture reflections by taking a look at the account of the Lame Beggar at the Beautiful Gate. Here we see Peter and John look at him intently, though they could not offer him the money he was asking for, it did not prevent their fixed and loving attention on him. What they offer the man was something even greater than he asked for. Prayer. Jesus Christ. Healing! The man asked with expectancy; that his needs would be met. But the Lord provided even greater things. Peter and John offered prayer, and expected that that prayer would bear fruit. What are the many things we can learn from this passage? In what ways can we relate to this beggar? In what ways are we called to follow the example of Peter and John? What does all of this have to do with hope? Listen to find out!
Acts 3:1-10
"Now Peter and John were going up to the temple area for the three o’clock hour of prayer. And a man crippled from birth was carried and placed at the gate of the temple called “the Beautiful Gate” every day to beg for alms from the people who entered the temple. When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked for alms. But Peter looked intently at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” He paid attention to them, expecting to receive something from them. Peter said, “I have neither silver nor gold, but what I do have I give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, [rise and] walk.” Then Peter took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles grew strong. He leaped up, stood, and walked around, and went into the temple with them, walking and jumping and praising God. When all the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognized him as the one who used to sit begging at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were filled with amazement and astonishment at what had happened to him."

| I Will Give You Rest | 15 Mar 2023 | 00:36:37 | |
In this episode, we take a different approach than usual, by doing a Lectio Divina together on Matthew 11:28-30. What we offer in this episode is a much deeper, personal and more vulnerable reflection on our walk with Christ and how He is working in our lives during this season; in and through the launch of our full time apostolate work, and especially during Lent. We discuss the things that are weighing on our hearts as well how the Lord is calling us to rest and trust in Him. We pray this conversation will be a blessing in your own lenten journey.
Matthew 11:28-30
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Bar 3:9; 37-41
Hear the commandments of life, O Israel;
give ear, and learn wisdom!
Afterward she appeared upon earth
and lived among men.
She is the book of the commandments of God,
and the law that endures for ever.
All who hold her fast will live,
and those who forsake her will die.
Acts 15:10
Now therefore why do you make trial of God by putting a yoke upon the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?
Gal 5:1
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand fast therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
Mat 5:48
You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
John 14:16
And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you for ever...
Phil 2:1-8
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any incentive of love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which was in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.
1 Cor 13:4-8
Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends...

| Return to Me With Your Whole Heart | 22 Feb 2023 | 00:08:46 | |
It's Ash Wednesday! Our Lenten journey has begun. In this "shortie" episode, Fred offers a reflection on the readings for the day: in particular, the words, “Return to me with your whole heart…” What do these words mean? What is the Lord calling us to and reminding us of? What can we learn from our tendencies in our human relationships? How do we avoid growing cold in our love and taking our beloved for granted? The answers to these questions are found in this reflection. As you begin your Lenten journey, we encourage you to listen and take up the challenge that Fred offers here: "This Lent, may we return to the Lord with our whole heart, so that the fire of his love may be enkindled in our hearts. May we be filled by that fire with the warmth of his grace; and may we inspire others to do the same."

| Sports and Sainthood | 15 Feb 2023 | 00:57:10 | |
At times the world of sports can seem to run headlong into conflict with the world of faith. Studies and lived world experience seem to reveal that at least in the hearts and minds of many, participation in and consumption of sports entertainment take the priority over matters of faith and worship on any given Sunday. This can be found even in the pressures placed upon young people. What is this the cause of this seeming divide? What does the Church (and Scripture) have to say about the relationship between faith and sports? What value is there in athletics in terms of informing our faith and helping us to grow in virtue? In this episode we are joined by coach and teacher, Kelley Grothus and Fr Patrick Behm as we discuss the answers to these questions and more.

1 Cor 9:22-27; 1 Tim 4:78; 1 Cor 12:1-31; Phil 3:12-15

Trigger Warning: Infant Loss and Miscarriage
In this episode we are joined by our friends Danny and Ashley Swalve as we discuss their journey of coming to a deeper faith in Christ and how that has shaped their marriage and helped them to find great hope even through otherwise overwhelmingly difficult circumstances. At the heart of their testimony is their story of surrender and trust in God's will for their lives; a desire to be used by Him to help bring healing to others who have faced similar challenges.

We have a new podcast coming out on January 24th, 2023! This weekly, year-long show is called, "My Lord & My God," based on the words of St. Thomas. Our focus in every episode will be helping listeners to encounter Christ in the Eucharist and to better understand this most beautiful and sacred mystery: Christ present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. We will explore Scripture, the teachings of the Church, and the writings of the saints. We will also hear many powerful testimonies of how lives have been changed through encountering Christ in the Eucharist. What difference should this encounter with Christ make in our lives? How does it shape our relationship with the Lord and with one another? Listen to find out!
Be sure to subscribe/follow on your favorite podcast platform to catch all the new episodes. In the meantime, enjoy this preview of our fourth episode. "How has your encounter with Christ in the Eucharist changed your life? What difference has it made?" We love to ask people these questions and hear their response. While in reality, this profound mystery of encounter with Christ should be more than just one single experience, we still have those moments that seem altogether unique, impactful, life changing. Like the apostle John, we can find that we even remember the time of day (John 1:39). In this episode, Fred shares his "Thomas" moment. That first encounter with Christ in the Eucharist that really led to him proclaiming, "My Lord and my God!" The full episode will post on Tuesday, February 21.

| All Dogs go to Heaven... or Do they? | 28 Aug 2025 | 00:27:54 | |
Do our pets go to heaven?
It’s one of those questions people of all ages wonder about. Whether it’s sparked by watching All Dogs Go to Heaven as a kid, or by the very real grief of saying goodbye to a beloved family pet, the thought lingers: Will I see them again?
In this episode, Kara shares her family’s personal experience of losing a pet—and how that moment of loss opened up bigger questions of faith, hope, and what God has in store for all creation. Together, let's explore the possibilities by looking at what Scripture and the Catechism actually say about heaven and the renewal of all things. Here, Kara will share her own considerations, as well!

| You talkin' about me? | 18 Jan 2023 | 00:45:25 | |
"Treat me like a human being." These were the words of a friend of ours recounting a difficult situation to us recently. These words have stuck with us since. We - like so many we'd be willing to guess - often speak of the "dignity of the human person," and yet belief in that dignity is not always evident in the experiences of daily life. Christ tells us that the world will know us by our love for one another; that we are to love one another as he has loved us. Yet, we gossip, we slander. We are quick to desire empathy and we want to be given the benefit of the doubt, but we are not always so quick to extend that to others. How can we overcome this? What are the implications of the dignity of each human person, on the way we live our lives as social beings? These are some of the topics we dive into with our good friend, and special guest, Sr Fidelis Marie.
*Some of the questions we discuss: *
What’s the difference between gossip and venting? When is venting unhealthy?
What is the line between getting something off of our chest and being uncharitable?
Has our culture trained us to not treat one another as human beings?
What role does evaluating the intentions of others and the practice of empathy play in your interior life?
Is there value in reflecting on how our own wounds and experiences can shape how we interact with others and perceive things?
How should these experiences shape your relationships with others? How can we overcome our tendency to desire empathy and understanding from others but be less inclined to extend it?
What role does vulnerability and authenticity play?

| Great Desires, Humility, and Peace: Ch 5 - I Believe in Love | 21 Dec 2022 | 00:23:04 | |
For a limited time, as a "Christmas gift" to our listeners, please enjoy our full discussion from our I Believe in Love book study on the fifth chapter of this life changing book. Here we discuss the desires of our hearts, how are we to follow and discern those desires, and how the Lord has given us gifts to build the kingdom. Shorter than a typical episode of Draw Near, but also a bit more personal at times, we hope and pray, but also believe, that these discussions will be a blessing to you (whether you have read the book or not - but we hope you will!).
For the Book Study (or for going deeper):
This book, "I Believe in Love," is a personal retreat based on the teachings of St. Therese of Lisieux written by Fr Jean C J D'Elbee
Read Chapter 5 (pgs. 115-140)
Listen to this discussion of Conference 5 between Fred and Kara from Draw Near (drawnear.me)!
Discuss the following discussion questions with a friend OR in the "discussion" feed within the book study on Suscipe (https://community.suscipe.co/spaces/8805059/content) You can also click on this link to join the study! It's not too late!
For your convenience, here are the questions:
1. Chapter 5 opens with the words, "Nothing great ever comes about without great desires... If they are lacking, everything is dull and lifeless." Was there a time you were driven to achieve a desire only to discover that it did not bring fulfillment or glory to God? How did that impact you?
"'When we decide on some action, nine times out of ten we keep asking ourselves, "What are people going to think? What will So-and-so think if I do that?' and not, "What will Jesus think?" (pg.128). Have you ever made a decision based on what others would think? Have you made a decision for God? Which one brought greater peace/ joy/fulfillment or the like?
Reflect on the reality of God's grace at work in your life, and the desires he has placed in your heart; attainable desires according to St Therese! In what way might the Lord be calling you to use your natural gifts, talents, and the desires he placed in your heart, to bring him glory and build the kingdom?
"A ravishing form of humility is simplicity. It is the charm of those who know how to put themselves in their proper place and are not puffed up in their own eyes" (pg 130). Who is someone in your own life that you would describe in this way--simple humility? How might you follow that person as they follow Christ, and imitate their witness?
Building on the discussion about how the Lord speaks to us, and reflecting on being an "angel of peace," as Fr D'Elbee describes it, how is the Lord calling you to be a messenger ("angel") of peace in your home? In your work? In your relationships? In the world around you?
