Taste, Texture, & Smell: How Sensory Sensitivities Affect Autistics' Experiences With Food19 Sep 202500:17:04

What if your sensory needs around food were not something to fix, but something to honor?

In this solo episode of Dr. Marianne-Land: An Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast, Dr. Marianne Miller explores how taste, texture, and smell can shape food experiences for autistic people, especially those struggling with ARFID or longstanding selective eating. For many neurodivergent folks, eating is not just about hunger or nutrition. It is about navigating an overwhelming sensory world where food can trigger discomfort, distress, or shutdown.

In this episode, Dr. Marianne challenges the idea that “picky eating” (not a fan of this term) is a behavioral issue. She instead centers a neurodivergent-affirming lens. Dr. Marianne explains why certain tastes may be too intense, why some textures are intolerable, and how even the smell of cooking can completely derail someone’s ability to eat. Rather than dismissing these experiences, she offers a framework that respects the wisdom of the sensory system and centers bodily autonomy.

Throughout the episode, Dr. Marianne also highlights how intersecting identities influence whose sensory needs get honored and whose get ignored. Fat autistic people are more likely to be accused of bingeing instead of being screened for ARFID. Autistic people of color may be labeled as oppositional instead of recognized as overwhelmed. Trans and nonbinary folks may feel especially vulnerable to dysphoria or sensory shutdown. When treatment spaces fail to consider these intersections, they increase the risk of harm and deepen eating-related trauma.

Listeners will come away with a greater understanding of what sensory-based food aversions really are and how we can create supportive environments that do not rely on compliance, but rather collaboration, compassion, and choice.

Content Caution

About halfway through the episode, Dr. Marianne discusses common invalidating experiences autistic people have in treatment, including being coerced into eating foods that feel unsafe, ignored by providers, or misdiagnosed because of anti-fat bias or racism. There are no graphic food descriptions, but this part may be activating for folks who have experienced treatment trauma or food-related distress.

When Words Harm: The Link Between Childhood Verbal Abuse & Disordered Eating (Content Caution)17 Sep 202500:13:58

What happens when the most painful wounds from childhood were not physical but verbal (or were both)?

In this solo episode, Dr. Marianne Miller explores how childhood verbal abuse shapes our relationship with food, body image, and self-worth. Words like "You're too much," "Are you really going to eat that?" or "You’d be pretty if you lost weight" do not just pass through us. They often take root and become beliefs that fuel restriction, binge eating, ARFID, and body distrust. These early messages are rarely named in traditional eating disorder care, yet they are at the center of how so many people learn to disconnect from their own needs.

This episode also takes a close look at intersectionality and how verbal abuse is often amplified when it lands on marginalized identities. Fat children, neurodivergent kids, BIPOC youth, disabled teens, and queer or trans kids often receive more frequent and more punishing verbal messages about food, emotions, and appearance. These experiences are not isolated. They are shaped by broader systems that devalue certain bodies and behaviors while demanding compliance and control. Dr. Marianne outlines how those messages become internalized and how they show up decades later in eating struggles that are often misunderstood or minimized by standard care.

Rather than framing recovery around food rules or rigid programs, this episode invites you to imagine a different path. One that centers truth, autonomy, compassion, and body liberation. Whether you are navigating ARFID, binge eating, restriction, or an unnameable discomfort with food, this conversation offers validation and a starting point for deeper healing.

WHAT YOU'LL HEAR IN THIS EPISODE
  • The many forms verbal abuse can take in childhood

  • How shaming language around food and body shapes long-term eating patterns

  • Why intersectionality matters in recovery

  • How internalized shame drives disordered eating

  • Why traditional eating disorder treatment often fails marginalized clients

  • What a neurodivergent-affirming, sensory-attuned, liberation-focused approach looks like

Quasi-Recovery Explained: When Eating Disorder Recovery Feels Incomplete27 Aug 202500:15:43

What happens when you're no longer engaging in dangerous eating disorder behaviors, but food still feels like it controls your life? In this episode, Dr. Marianne Miller unpacks the concept of quasi-recovery, a space that can feel both safer than active illness and yet not fully free.

Quasi-recovery often includes improved behaviors, such as more regular meals or weight restoration, but leaves behind the deeper work of healing food fear, body shame, and internalized rules. It can be an especially frustrating and lonely experience, because it is often praised by others even when it does not feel like real recovery on the inside.

Dr. Marianne explores how quasi-recovery can shape lifelong eating struggles and why people often get stuck there. This episode also considers how neurodivergent and marginalized folks are particularly vulnerable to staying in quasi-recovery when treatment does not address trauma, sensory needs, systemic harm, or body autonomy.

This episode covers:

  • What quasi-recovery is and how it shows up in daily life

  • Why healing requires more than just behavior change

  • How fear and food rules quietly persist in this phase

  • Why some people believe they will struggle with food forever

  • What a more liberating vision of recovery can look like

If you have ever wondered whether you are truly recovered or just surviving in a different way, this episode offers clarity, compassion, and hope. You do not have to stay stuck in a version of recovery that does not meet your full needs. There is more available to you.

Trauma & Invalidation: When Eating Disorder Treatment Is NOT Neurodivergent-Affirming With Livia Sara @livlabelfree19 Nov 202400:36:21

In this episode, we’re diving into the often-overlooked world of neurodivergence in eating disorder treatment with the amazing Livia Sara from @livlabelfree! Ever feel like the “one-size-fits-all” approach in treatment just doesn't fit? Livia shares her experiences and insights on what happens when treatment spaces miss the mark on neurodivergent-affirming care, and why that can feel invalidating—and even traumatic. Join us for a deep yet lively conversation as we unpack how treatment can actually be inclusive and empowering for neurodivergent folks, making healing a journey that truly honors individual lived experience!

ABOUT LIVIA SARA

Livia Sara is an autism advocate and eating disorder survivor that now helps others overcome their own mental barriers through her books, courses, and coaching programs. She is the author of the blog livlabelfree.com and the host of the Liv Label Free Podcast. Livia is a lifelong learner that loves listening to audiobooks, going on walks, and reading the latest science on all things neurodiversity and eating disorders!   Livia struggled with an ED for nearly a decade while being undiagnosed neurodivergent (autistic and ADHD) all throughout the duration of her illness. Discovering the underlying neurodiversity component caused everything to "click" for her, and allowed her to see that many of her "ED behaviors" were simply manifestations of neurodivergent traits. Because she had been traumatized by a system that neither recognized nor affirmed her neurodiversity, she has made it her mission to help educate and bring awareness to the underserved niche of neurodivergence and eating disorders!

HEAR FROM DANIELLE ABOUT DANIELLE!

I have been passionate about learning and helping others most of my life. I am originally from Northern California and was overjoyed to study at University of California, San Diego and to live near the ocean. After receiving my Bachelors of Science in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience and Psychology I stayed in San Diego to complete my doctorate in Marital and Family Therapy at Alliant International University and become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #48529).

While at college, I took a course on eating disorders and began to volunteer with a program that focused on eating disorder prevention. I knew I wanted to be a therapist and help people heal and recover from their eating disorders. I planted my roots in San Diego and began working at an eating disorder treatment program. It was clear early on that most of my clients had a trauma history. Some had never called what they went through “trauma,” but could see how their life experiences had contributed to the development of their eating disorder. Others knew they had gone through something that still bothered them in the present, but didn’t know how to talk about it or how to heal.

During this time I acquired extensive experience treating anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, complex PTSD, dissociative disorders, depression, and anxiety. I also began my training in EMDR therapy; a treatment that has become crucial to my therapeutic approach. To help clients on their journey toward healing I also utilize systems theory, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), acceptance commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness. My overall goal is to work collaboratively with clients in order to honor their treatment goals.

In 2013 Kelly Hinds, RDN and I created Savor Podcast. For three years we recorded episodes on nutrition, body image, mindfulness, yoga, eating disorders, dieting, EMDR therapy and beyond. Past Savor podcast episodes are available here.

Before starting my family, I was an adjunct professor at University of California, San Diego, Alliant International University and San Diego State University. I taught classes on eating disorders, stress management, social psychology, and assessment. After my family started to grow, I decided to slow down and work part-time in my Mission Valley private practice in San Diego, California.

I work toward providing a calm, safe and grounded space for you to feel comfortable sharing your successes and your struggles. A journey back to self always has ups, downs and surprises. Together we can navigate how to find tools and strategies to help you cope and make space for yourself.

In my free time I enjoy spending time with my husband and two daughters. I also love swimming, paddle boarding, and hiking.

Anne specializes in eating disorders and is a Devon, England, UK registered nutrition therapy practitioner. She is very active on Instagram @theeatingdisordernutritionist. Two things I really like about Anne is her authenticity and her witty sense of humor. I also appreciate that she is an anti-diet dietitian in the UK who is very clear about not focusing on weight loss in her nutrition practice. She also loves food and knows how to cook fun things. I’m excited for you to learn more about her in this episode. :)

Anne has been doing a diploma in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in the last three years, so she combines nutritional therapy with CBT skills or "nutritional counseling.”

ARFID, PDA, & Autonomy: Why Pressure Makes Eating Harder22 Aug 202500:12:15

Why does pressuring someone to eat often make things worse, especially when they are neurodivergent? In this solo episode, Dr. Marianne Miller explores the intersection of ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) and PDA, which can be understood as either Pathological Demand Avoidance or Pervasive Drive for Autonomy. She breaks down how demands around eating, even gentle ones, can increase distress and shut down the nervous system for people with this profile.

You will learn why pressure often intensifies food refusal and how honoring autonomy can become a foundation for safety, regulation, and healing. Dr. Marianne shares what helps instead, from sensory-attuned environments to co-regulation to collaborative care that supports autonomy instead of undermining it.

This episode is especially relevant for those searching for support with ARFID and PDA, whether you're navigating a Pervasive Drive for Autonomy or supporting someone with autism and food refusal challenges. Dr. Marianne discusses key elements of ARFID therapy in California, Texas, and Washington, D.C., with attention to neurodivergent-affirming approaches for sensory-based eating challenges. Topics include autonomy-centered care, the connection between PDA and eating avoidance, sensory accommodations, and how pressure around food can disrupt progress. This conversation is ideal for anyone exploring eating disorder support that moves beyond compliance and toward collaboration.

Whether you are someone navigating ARFID and PDA yourself, or a clinician or caregiver offering support, this episode will offer a compassionate, liberation-focused, neurodivergent-affirming lens on what really helps and why.

🧠 Topics Covered:
  • What ARFID is and how it differs from body image-based eating disorders

  • What PDA looks like and why many prefer the term Pervasive Drive for Autonomy

  • Why pressure, even subtle, can shut down eating

  • How the nervous system responds to loss of autonomy

  • The difference between defiance and nervous system survival

  • Why same foods, routines, and sensory predictability matter

  • How to support eating through choice, collaboration, and autonomy

  • Co-regulation and sensory accommodations as vital tools

  • Why internal demands can feel just as overwhelming as external ones

  • The power of trust, pacing, and honoring difference

Why Letting Go of Restriction Feels Unsafe in Eating Disorder Recovery20 Aug 202500:12:17

Why does letting go of food restriction feel unsafe, even when you're ready to recover? In this solo episode, Dr. Marianne explores how restriction can become a form of survival. She discusses the ways restriction may provide a sense of control, structure, or identity, especially for those who are neurodivergent, live in marginalized bodies, or have trauma histories.

You will learn about the difference between egosyntonic restriction, which feels aligned with your values, and egodystonic restriction, which feels distressing. This insight can help make sense of your internal conflict and guide you toward a more compassionate approach to healing.

This episode offers a perspective rooted in liberation, not compliance. Dr. Marianne invites you to honor the role restriction has played in your life while also creating new ways to feel safe and supported in your body.

📌 In This Episode, Dr. Marianne Covers:

  • Why restriction can feel protective, not harmful

  • How trauma, sensory overload, and executive functioning challenges influence restrictive patterns

  • What it means for restriction to be egosyntonic or egodystonic

A Dr. Marianne-Land SOLO episode! As an eating disorder therapist and an online course creator in San Diego, California, I've been thinking a lot about the role of love and how love can drive many things in our lives. We love our special interests (Star Wars for me!) so we spend time and money on them and talk about them a lot.

Perfectionism & Eating Disorders02 Aug 202400:14:54

A Dr. Marianne-Land SOLO episode! I share about an imperfect moment that happened to me the other day, and how a friend encouraged me to record a podcast episode on perfectionism and eating disorder recovery. So I did! :)

Feel like you aren’t good enough? Always comparing yourself to others? Constantly cataloguing your faults and feeling like a failure? It sounds like you are struggling with perfectionism. It can be so challenging to fall into the “compare and despair” pit when there is such an emphasis on perfect looks and perfect achievement, materialistically or otherwise. Perfectionism is a trait that can be common in people suffering from eating disorders.

Struggling with perfectionism AND an eating disorder can lead to (a) feeling like you have to be perfect, so you engage in eating disorder behaviors to try to be perfect, or (b) feeling disappointed or ashamed that you’re not perfect, so you you engage in eating disorder behaviors to counteract these emotions. Either way, perfectionism can be a challenge to recovery. Let's look at how to push back perfectionism and even use it to help your eating disorder recovery in this episode!

Stay tuned for my SOLO episodes on Fridays, as well as the weekly interviews on Tuesdays. :)

Emotion Regulation, Neurodiversity, & Eating Disorders With Jasmine Jaquess, MA, PLPC @black_bold_and_learning30 Jul 202400:31:29

Jasmine is back for the second time! She and I talk about emotion regulation, which is something she specializes in (and even has a workbook for it--see link below!). We also discuss how emotion regulation can look different for people who are neurodivergent and how eating disorder behaviors can serve as survival mechanisms for managing one's emotions.

ABOUT JASMINE JAQUESS, M.A, PLPC

Jasmine is a clinical mental health counselor in the states of Colorado and Missouri. She has a background in sports psychology, trauma, eating disorders, and racial concerns. Jasmine is passionate about learning as much as she can in this life while enjoying the slow and mundane parts of it. Her faith and spirituality are important to her vision and drive in life. Overall, she'd describe herself as the calm friend, a quirky individual, foodie, and someone who's always down to have a good conversation.   As Jasmine says, there are so many rules around food and body. It creates so many limitations more than people realize. Suddenly your clothes are too much, food is too much, the way you look is too much, then you start to isolate or demean yourself. It's just a spiral. Rather than people saying "hey, this isn't true or normal," it gets brushed off and we internalize it. Jasmine struggled with that mentality alone for years, and after she was able to recognize there is so much more to life, it helped set her free. As a counselor, she wants to help others get out of their rut.   Jasmine has an amazing blog on her website, so check it out! :)   Website: https://www.blackboldlearning.com/ Instagram: @black_bold_and_learning  Blog: https://www.blackboldlearning.com/black-bold-learning-blog Mastering Emotion Regulation Workbook: https://www.blackboldlearning.com/mastering-emotional-regulation-workbook   Check out another episode in which Jasmine and I discuss avoidance, body image standards, and the notion of the strong, black woman on Spotify and Apple

Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS) & Eating Disorder Recovery -- My Story19 Jul 202400:20:22

A Dr. Marianne-Land SOLO episode! Since I was a little girl, I was highly sensitive. Family members, coaches, and teaches often called me "too sensitive." My sensory issues included feeling overwhelmed in social settings, disliking bright lights, strong smells (that others may not smell), and loud noises. For decades I thought I was the problem, that I "should" act differently. It affected my self-esteem. I then learned that I am a highly sensitive person--that I have sensory processing sensitivity, and it validated who I am and helped me understand that nothing is wrong with me. I am simply neurodivergent, and the world wasn't designed for my brain. Hear more about my story in this episode!

Stay tuned for my SOLO episodes on Fridays, as well as the weekly interviews on Tuesdays. :)

A Dr. Marianne-Land SOLO episode! I remember when I was in the clutches of my eating disorder, the possibility of body acceptance felt like it was in a galaxy far, far away. I eventually began to understand it, and it was like a new universe had opened up to me. In this episode, I'll share what I came to understand.
