Summary:
When a county employee is found shot to death in sun-drenched daylight while sitting in his county road grader, Undersheriff Bill Gastner is faced with puzzling questions. The simplest explanation - that an errant bullet from a careless target shooters rifle blew out Larry Zipolis brains - is soon discarded as inconsistencies surface. The fatal bullet shows no rifling marks, and investigation shows that the shooter walked directly toward the road grader, in full view of the victim - who did nothing to defend himself.
In addition to the demands of the investigation, Gastner learns that Sheriff Eduardo Salcido has hired a new deputy without discussing the matter with his undersheriff and that the new hire is destined to be the first female road-patrol deputy in the history of Posadas County.
Thus begins Gastners relationship with Estelle Reyes, whose shrewd observations shed important light on a crime that reveals all kinds of skeletons lurking in Posadas County closets.
Steven F. Havill is the author of more than twenty novels set in the American West. He taught in secondary schools for twenty-five years and recently earned an associate of applied science degree in gunsmithing. He lives with his wife, Kathleen, in New Mexico.

Summary:
When Samuel Cross was growing up, he was rarely found without a book in his hands and that was the way his mother, a widow, wanted him raised. His uncle, Stephen Larkin, a frontiersman like Sam's father, wanted him to be strong and able to fend for himself, so he would take him into the mountains every summer to teach him how to fight and use a weapon.
He proved to be as adept at these subjects as he had been at book learning, but when he was 18 and his mother died, he took a job working for Chandler, the trader at Fort Bostwick, for whom he was a well-paid clerk and, eventually, watchdog of the business. What he didn't understand was that he looked forward to troublemakers coming into the shop so that he could confront and deal with them. It was during a visit from the district marshal that he learned of Chandler's crooked ways and of his own notoriety and reputation as a safety killer, one who never fights unless he knows that the law is sure to protect him. When the marshal tells him to leave the fort and learn how to live right, Cross decides to head east.
His strength and skill with a gun make Cross both friends and enemies on the boat he is taking down the Mississippi. He is saved one night from a fatal stabbing by Charles Granville, a well-to-do southerner, who recognizes a startling resemblance between himself and Cross. He proposes that Cross repay him by taking part in a daring deceit. Feeling indebted to Granville, Cross agrees and heads to New Orleans. But can Cross actually pull off the masquerade and fool Granville's parents, friends, and especially his beautiful sister, Nancy. And what is behind Granville's desire to have Cross take on the role of himself?

Publisher: Random House Audio
Genres: Fiction, Westerns
Summary:
Louis L'Amour brings you the Wild West as you've never heard it before. This classic story, complete with a full cast, stirring music, and authentic sound effects, sweeps listeners back to the rough and ready days of America's frontier, where a man had to live by his wits...and his gun.
Death is no stranger to Almagre, a rough boomtown in which the local cemetery, Boot Hill, is almost as crowded as the saloons. Almagre had sprung up in just under two years with a silver strike, and in that short time, it had buried three town marshals.
Into this wild and bloody town rides Texas Ranger Chick Bowdrie, trailing a Pecos bank robber who left two men dead. All Bowdrie has to go on is an unconvincing eyewitness description, a name scrawled on a tattered post card...and his own skills as a master tracker.
But it's his skill with a gun Bowdrie will need when he looks for answers in Almagre, for the town is gripped in a stranglehold by a ruthless cattle baron named Bonelli. To bring his quarry back, Bowdrie will pin on the marshal's star to face down Bonelli and his gunmen - in a town where a badge is a death warrant.

His quarantine is broken by Cage Kingfisher, a mad clergyman who preaches the gospel of death. He orders his followers to round up the survivors of Happyville and bring them home to face the very plague they fled. To save them, Flintlock must send Kingfisher to Hell. Summary:
Law of the Desert Born
These stories represent Louis L'Amour at his best - stirring adventure tales of the ageless Old West, as tough and gritty as the men who tames it. Each story is personally selected, with an introduction and special historical notes, by the author.
Meet men like Shad Marone, the gunfighter who killed in self-defense, but who is forced to run because he killed the wrong man - the sheriff's brother; Matt Sabre, as tough as the Texas trail he rides, on a mission of mercy to the wife of the man he gunned down; and Kim Sartain, a reckless young drifter who refuses to back down from a showdown with a vicious outlaw killer. Every story in this collection bears Louis L'Amour's distinctive brand of unbridled action and unembellished authenticity - taking us into the white-hot deserts, stone-cold canyons, and rough-and-tumble towns of the world only he knows so well.
That Triggernometry Tenderfoot
An action-packed story from the popular western anthology Long Ride Home.
Horse Heaven
When Jim Locklin pays his brother George a visit, he finds George missing, his horse ranch taken over by his brother's estranged wife, and a shifty gambler named Chance Varrow who seems to have become a permanent visitor.
As Jim's suspictions build, they center on one person - Varrow, whose relationship with George's wife, Amie, is a little too close for comfort. Taking matters into his own hands, Jim vows to find out the truth, no matter what the cost. In the end, it will all come down to just two men - and only one will walk away.

Summary:
From the winner of 2014's PEN Robert W. Bingham Prize, an unforgettable debut novel about Loretta, a teenager married off as a "sister wife", who makes a break for freedom.
At the heart of this exciting debut novel, set in Arizona and Idaho in the mid-1970s, is 15-year-old Loretta, who slips out of her bedroom every evening to meet her so-called gentile boyfriend. Her strict Mormon parents catch her returning one night, and promptly marry her off to Dean Harder, a devout yet materialistic fundamentalist who already has a wife and a brood of kids. The Harders relocate to his native Idaho, where Dean's teenage nephew Jason falls hard for Loretta.
A Zeppelin and Tolkien fan, Jason worships Evel Knievel and longs to leave his close-minded community. He and Loretta make a break for it. They drive all night, stay in hotels, and relish their dizzying burst of teenage freedom as they seek to recover Dean's cache of "Mormon gold". But someone Loretta left behind is on their trail....
A riveting story of desire and escape, Daredevils boasts memorable set pieces and a rich cast of secondary characters. There's Dean's other wife, Ruth, who as a child in the 1950s was separated from her parents during the notorious Short Creek raid, when federal agents descended on a Mormon fundamentalist community. There's Jason's best friend, Boyd, part Native American and caught up in the activist spirit of the time, who comes along for the ride, with disastrous results. And Vestal's ultimate creation is a superbly sleazy chatterbox - a man who might or might not be Evel Knievel himself - who works his charms on Loretta at a casino in Elko, Nevada.
A lifelong journalist whose Spokesman column is a fixture in Spokane, WA, Shawn has honed his fiction over many years, publishing in journals like McSweeney's and Tin House. His stunning first collection, Godforsaken Idaho, burrowed into history as it engaged with masculinity and crime, faith and apostasy, and the West that he knows so well. Daredevils shows what he can do on a broader canvas - a fascinating, wide-angle portrait of a time and place that's both a classic coming of age tale and a plunge into the myths of America, sacred and profane.

But Flintlock has his own powerful reasons for crossing into the nightmarish swamp country from East Texas.
