Episode 128: K9 Hates French People (City of Death)

dimanche 25 août 2024Durée 01:03:51

We’re off to Paris (don’t you think it has a bouquet?) for what is held up by many as the outstanding adventure of Season 17 – City of Death! Will we find it as endearing as the majority of fandom seems to (8th in DWM’s Mighty 200 poll and 5th in the 50th anniversary poll, don’tcha know)? Well, you’ll have to listen in to find out!

Join us as we discuss the clear step-up in both SFX and model work, the absolutely sparkling dialogue, whether Count Scarlioni is the best-dressed man in all of Doctor Who, Duggan’s questionable method of just punching things, and whether Countess Scarlioni just thought that her husband was gay (and not a spaghetti alien). Of course, we have to rag on the French (it just had to be done!)

If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this story available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). If you’re a little old fashioned (like Anthony) and prefer physical media, you can find the entirety of Season 17 on Blu Ray from Amazon US (https://amzn.to/4cnZioD) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3yvWfg9)

Bonus Episode 37: A Collection of Dodo Don'ts (The Celestial Toymaker Animation)

dimanche 18 août 2024Durée 47:42

It’s a full house, as we are joined by both Alan Siler and Diana Birney to discuss the recent animation of The Celestial Toymaker. Will it be the best animation yet, or nothing more than psychedelic nightmare fuel?

Join us as we discuss the pros and cons of the controversial animation style, whether Dodo is the worst companion of all time, the racist under/overtones of the story, possible other animation styles for future missing episode animations, and whether this story might benefit from a full remake by David Lynch. Of course, we consider whether the animation actually improves the story.

If you would like to watch along with us, the animation is available on Blu-Ray and DVD from both Amazon US (https://amzn.to/4fKWlBb) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3Ap2DGq)

Episode 120: Missing the Junk in the Trunk (The Ribos Operation)

dimanche 5 mai 2024Durée 01:04:44

The Watchers universe became so out-of-balance during the turbulent times of Season 15 that the White Guardian has summoned us all and instructed us to find the Key to Time so that we may bring balance back to fandom! That can only mean one thing: we’re kicking off Season 16’s Key to Time saga with The Ribos Operation!

Join us as we discuss our new companion(!), Holmesian double-acts, the smart use of the Shrivenzale, the touching relationship between the Graff and Shollack, and the original plan to have Garron be Australian. We also get into a little bit of a heated debate on whether Binro was a good addition to the story.

If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the entirety of the Season available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). If you prefer physical media, you can find the entirety of the season on DVD from both Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3UuAcNB) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/44rFj5U).

Episode 58: No Other Women in Space (The Space Pirates)

dimanche 9 mai 2021Durée 51:36

This episode, we bring to you our discussion of a story that is, in the eyes of fandom, one of the worst stories of all time. Seriously, in Doctor Who Magazine’s 50th Anniversary poll, it came in at 7th last. It’s also the last story to have missing episodes. That’s right, it’s the one and only The Space Pirates! Will we find it as bad as accepted wisdom would have it?

Over the course of the episode, Don questions the justice system of the time that this is set in, Julie continues to fangirl over Jamie, Anthony questions the decision to merge the pirate and cowboy genres and then set the whole thing in space, and Reilly gets the name of The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon wrong and attempts to fix in post-production with some hilariously bad dubbing. As a group, the crew ponders the potential of a The Adventures of Milo Clancy spin-off.

For those of you who want to watch this along with us, this story is sadly missing – the existing episodes are available as part of the Lost in Time DVD boxset through Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3pea8s9) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3pmd2em). The audio of the missing episodes is available as part of The Lost Episodes: Collection Five CD boxset, available Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3jl0H6p) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3G7gq31). This is story is available to stream through Britbox US (http://www.britbox.com) and Britbox UK (http://www.britbox.co.uk).

Episode 57: The Mix-a-Lot Principle (The Seeds of Death)

dimanche 25 avril 2021Durée 57:40

This episode, we discuss the first return of everyone’s favourite lizardmen as the show revisits the base-under-siege genre in The Seeds of Death! Will the Watchers enjoy it better than their debut adventure? You’ll have to listen to the episode to find out!

Over the course of the episode, Anthony questions why the T-Mat base on the Moon has a hall of mirrors, Don discusses his theory about rear-end size being the status ultimate symbol of the Ice Warriors (#THICC), Julie continues her Jamie love-fest, and Reilly questions how the Ice Warriors’ react to temperature. The entire crew talks traumatic stress and the effective way that it’s represented in this story.

For those of you who want to watch this along with us, this special edition of this story is available on DVD as an individual release through Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3aAaHnW), and as part of the Revisitations 2 box set through Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3tT0laG). Episode 56: Gond But Not Forgotten (The Krotons)

dimanche 11 avril 2021Durée 54:05

This episode, we discuss the script debut of the legendary writer Robert Holmes, in a story where a group of students use the power of acid to overthrow their educational overlords! Surprisingly, it’s not footage of student riots from the 1960s – it’s actually The Krotons!

Over the course of the episode, Don gets passionate about canon, Reilly contemplates the hours of fun that would be a Kroton video game, Julie tries to make sense of why the Gonds never previously rose up against the Krotons, and Anthony gives a mini history lesson. The entire team discusses how utterly terrible and nonsensical the Krotons’ method of powering their spacecraft actually is.

Over the course of our discussion, Don casts doubt on Isobel’s photography skills, Reilly talks Cyber branding, Julie helpfully keeps track of all the up-kilt filming attempts (quelle surprise!), and Anthony gets an early start on the UNIT dating question. Additionally, the entire team can’t help but rave about their love of Kevin Stoney as Tobias Vaughn.

Episode 54: Too Expensive, Too Welsh (The Invasion - Episodes 1-4)

dimanche 14 mars 2021Durée 42:39

This episode, the Watchers in the Fourth Dimension head back to contemporary(ish) Earth, where trouble is brewing with suave businessmen, thuggish paramilitary troops, and a silver menace lurking in the background, as they tackle the first half of The Invasion!

Over the course of our discussion, Julie talks about the Doctor’s obnoxious door-bell etiquette, Reilly once again contrasts Lethbridge-Stewart against the bad bosses of Season 5, Anthony thinks too hard about Cyberman continuity, and Don expresses his strong, strong dislike of the new Cybermen. The entire crew discuss whether Vaughn was creeping on Rutledge’s secretary, and whether Rutledge was trying to avoid his wife…

Episode 53: One for the Dads (The Mind Robber)

dimanche 28 février 2021Durée 56:25

This episode, the Watchers in the Fourth Dimension find that reality is getting too hot anyway, and move outside of the confines of our reality and into a world where they could well become works of fiction. It can only be The Mind Robber!

Over the course of our discussion, Julie (of course) has strong feelings about the temporary re-casting of Jamie, Anthony learns some things about Scottish culture, Reilly finds himself curious about Captain Jack Harkaway, and Don has theories on the origin of the story’s villain and the nature of the Land of Fiction itself. The entire team find themselves loving how meta this story ended up being.

This episode is dedicated to the memory of Hamish Wilson, who sadly passed away from COVID-19 in March 2020.
