Lisa Weinstein Bio:


Lisa Weinstein is the Program Officer for our Science and Capacity Programs. Prior to joining Wilburforce, Lisa was the Senior Program Officer at the Turner Foundation, where she managed grantmaking to conserve and protect land, water, and wildlife throughout the U.S. Lisa also previously worked for Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources as an Assistant Chief of Nongame Conservation within the Wildlife Resources Division. Lisa has a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Biology and Ecology from Michigan State University and a Master of Science degree in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. When not working, Lisa enjoys hiking, bicycling, snowshoeing, and spending time outside with her husband and child.

She has spent the last 20 years working in various roles of community and economic development, environmental policy, grassroots organizing, social impact, and philanthropy. Cathy has served on dozens of community boards and commissions – including the local City Council, and as a governor-appointed commissioner for the state’s volunteerism initiative, Serve Washington. She has a BA in Communications from WWU, a master’s degree in social Entrepreneurship and Change from Pepperdine University, and a Certificate in Sustainable Business from Presidio Graduate School. She lives just outside of Bellingham, WA with her husband and animals on a shy acre near the Lummi Nation on the Salish Sea.

Dedee Wilner-Nugent Bio:


Dedee Wilner-Nugent began her career as a fundraising professional as the Executive Director of a small arts organization and then as a Development Director for a non-profit emergency animal hospital. Her experience managing capital campaigns began in 2001, when she joined The Collins Group, a consulting firm serving organizations in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, and California.

After a decade of successful, high-paced campaign work, Dedee took a 7-year break from consulting to serve as Director of Public Affairs for Central City Concern, one of the largest social service, healthcare, and housing agencies in Oregon.

In 2018 Dedee returned to capital campaign management as a capital campaign advisor with The Varga Group, a highly regarded boutique fundraising firm in Oregon. Five years later, Dedee was excited to join Capital Campaign Pro as a campaign advisor and to begin offering campaign expertise to nonprofit organizations across the USA.

David Secord Bio:


After 20 years in foundation and university leadership jobs, I established Barnacle Strategies as my independent consulting and volunteering platform. From a home base on an island in BC, I work with partners in Canada, the United States, and sometimes farther afield. I enjoy variety and so at a given time consulting clients might include foundations and funder affinity groups, partnership-oriented academic and research institutions, Indigenous people's organizations, and big or small NGOs. Projects and advising tend toward the creative and relevant, and often integrate environmental, socioeconomic, and biocultural strategies - especially place-based ones. I also help organizations recruit outstanding talent by managing executive searches and keep fresh by serving on several volunteer boards.

Rebecca Darwent Bio:


Rebecca Darwent is an internationally recognized expert in philanthropy and community-led initiatives. Her upcoming TED talk on the transformative power of community-led philanthropy is set to inspire individuals and organizations to embrace collaborative approaches in driving positive social change. With a diverse background spanning philanthropic advising, consulting, and global partnerships, Rebecca brings a wealth of knowledge and practical experience to all endeavors. She has led multimillion-dollar investments in equity, health, and education. She is currently a Senior Advisor to Philanthropy Together focussing on raising awareness of and funding for collaboratives, specifically those that are community-led. As a co-founder of the Foundation for Black Communities, Rebecca spearheaded fundraising, community engagement, and advocacy, resulting in a historic $200 million commitment to Black philanthropy by the Canadian government. Previously, Rebecca served as the Director of Global Partnerships at Singularity University, overseeing tech and education programs across five continents. She also worked as a Senior Policy Advisor to the Minister of Children and Youth Services in the Ontario provincial government, responsible for the Anti-Racism Directorate. Rebecca is a dedicated volunteer currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Black Communities, The Philanthropy Workshop Canada, and Laidlaw Foundation. She has been recognized as a Women Leaders for the World Fellow and honored as a Canadian Millennium Laureate.

John Esterle Bio:


John Esterle retired as Co-Executive Director of The Whitman Institute (TWI) in July 2022 when TWI, an independent foundation based in San Francisco, spent out all of its assets and ceased operations. TWI worked to advance social, political, and economic equity by funding dialogue, relationship building, and inclusive leadership. TWI also played a leading role in launching the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project in 2020, a five-year collaborative initiative to address the inherent power imbalances between foundations and nonprofits. John began his career at TWI in 1988 and became its Executive Director in 1998. He later led its transition from an operating to a grantmaking foundation as well as its decision to sunset the foundation. A past board president of Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement and the Rooftop PTA, he also served on the boards of The Germanacos Foundation, LeaderSpring, and Images and Voices of Hope. Currently, John is a board member of The Right Question Institute. Prior to joining TWI, his most notable job was directing a pilot project called Crime and the News Media, which featured a series of dialogues between journalists and advocates of alternatives to incarceration. John received my B.A. in Liberal Arts from the Hutchins School of Interdisciplinary Studies at Sonoma State University and my M.A. in Broadcast Communication Arts from San Francisco State University.

Jim Enote Bio:


Jim Enote is a Zuni tribal member and CEO of the Colorado Plateau Foundation. He serves on the boards of the Trust for Mutual Understanding, and Grand Canyon Trust, and formally with Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation. He is a National Geographic Society Explorer, a New Mexico Community Luminaria, and an E.F. Schumacher Society Fellow.


Jim’s service over the past forty years includes natural resource, cultural resource, philanthropic, and arts assignments for many organizations including UNESCO, UNDP, International Secretariat for Water, Nordic Council of Ministers, Tibet Child Nutrition Project, the Mountain Institute, National Geographic Society, US Bureau of Indian Affairs, US National Park Service, Zuni Tribe, and several major charitable foundations, museums, and universities. He has written in Heritage In the Context of Globalization; Science, Technology, and Human Values; Sacredness as a Means to Conservation; Mapping Our Places; Indigenous People and Sustainable Development; A:shiwi A:wan Ulohnanne, and Redrock Stories, to name a few. Recent short pieces include; We Cannot Live by Sentiments Alone, The Museum Collaboration Manifesto, Buyer Beware, What I Tell Boys, and Please Don’t Call Me a Warrior.


In 2010 while serving as the director of the A:shiwi A:wan Museum Jim was awarded the first Ames Prize for Innovative Museum Anthropology during the American Anthropological Association’s annual conference. In 2013 he received the Guardian of Culture and Lifeways Award from the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums, and in 2016 received the Hewett Award for leadership and service to the New Mexico museum community and for achievements in the museum field. He lives in his work in-progress home at Zuni, New Mexico.

Peter Stangel Bio:


Peter Stangel of Aiken, SC joined the US Endowment in April of 2010. An ecologist by training, Peter received a B.S. in Biology from Furman University and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. Previously he was with National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, most recently as Director of Science and Evaluation. With the Foundation he also served as Eastern and Southeastern Regional Director, and Neotropical Migratory Bird Initiative Director. Peter has extensive experience building corporate conservation partnerships, and has worked with Walmart, Shell Oil Company, ConocoPhillips, and Southern Company, among others. He has more than 20 publications in the technical literature and nearly 200 in the popular magazines.

Meta Loftsgaarden Bio:


Meta Loftsgaarden has been Forest Supervisor for the Mt. Hood National Forest since October 2021. Her career experience includes numerous leadership positions supporting local economies, communities, and science-based restoration and conservation. Before joining the Forest Service, Loftsgaarden was Executive Director for a state agency - the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB). This unique agency invested $150 million per biennium in native fish and wildlife habitat and water quality projects throughout Oregon. She was also Governor Brown's lead for the state's 100-Year Water Vision. Loftsgaarden previously worked for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service on partnership and policy issues including farmland protection, working forestland easements, and strategic conservation. In Montana, she promoted economic and natural resource policies as the head of the state’s Agriculture Marketing and Business Development Bureau and as the Governor’s deputy communications director. Loftsgaarden has a Master of Public Administration from Portland State University and a Bachelor of Science from Montana State University.
