Denis Hayes Bio:
Denis Hayes is an environmentalist and a long-time champion of solar & renewable energy. He rose to prominence in 1970 as the coordinator for the first Earth Day. He subsequently founded the Earth Day Network and expanded the event to 180 nations. Earth Day is now the most widely observed secular holiday in the world.
During the Carter Administration, Hayes was director of the federal Solar Energy Research Institute (now the National Renewable Energy Laboratory). Hayes became an adjunct professor of engineering at Stanford University for several years, and also practiced law in Silicon Valley. Since 1992, Hayes has been president of the Bullitt Foundation in Washington and continues to be a leader in environmental and energy policy. He was the principal developer of the Bullitt Center, judged by World Architecture Magazine to be "the greenest office building in the world."
Hayes has also served as Executive director of Environmental Action, Director of the Illinois State Energy Office, Visiting Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Fellow of the Worldwatch Institute, Fellow at the Bellagio Center, and Richard von Weizsäcker Fellow of the Bosch Foundation.
Hayes has received the national Jefferson Awards Medal for Outstanding Public Service as well as numerous other awards. Time Magazine named him as "Hero of the Planet" in 1999; the NYT profiled him as its Newsmaker of the Day; and Life Magazine selected him as one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century. His newest book, COWED: The Hidden Impact of 93 Million Cows on America's Health, Economy, Politics, Culture, and Environment, was published by W.W. Norton in 2015.

Previously, he was the CEO and co-founder of EcoScraps, which Scott’s Miracle-Gro acquired (NYSE: SMG), where he was a Director for their sustainability and hydroponic business unit. He has led sustainability initiatives with the US State Department, United Nations World Food Programme, Amazon, Google, Home Depot, Walmart, and some of the world’s largest food companies etc
Daniel has been named one of the top Social Impact Entrepreneurs in the USA by Bloomberg Businessweek and has been featured as the cover story in both Inc. Magazine and Forbes. Daniel studied English at BYU where he currently serves as an adjunct professor and is on the board of advisors for the Ballard Center for Social Impact.

Helen Flannery directs research for the Charity Reform Initiative at the Institute for Policy Studies. Helen’s research focuses on the relationship between philanthropy and inequality, including the policies and practices surrounding charitable mega-giving, private foundations, and donor-advised funds.
Prior to her current employment, Helen provided nonprofits with reporting, analytics, and industry benchmarking services through her work at Target Analytics and ROI Solutions. At those organizations, she also wrote extensively on charitable sector fundraising topics such as direct marketing, sustainer giving, and the economic factors affecting donor behavior.

Lee Crockett Bio:
As executive director of the Shark Conservation Fund (SCF), Lee is responsible for designing and implementing programmatic and grantmaking strategies, managing SCF’s grantmaking portfolio and staff, forming strategic partnerships with NGOs and other funders, fundraising, ensuring strong operations and governance, and representing the SCF to governments, NGOs, philanthropists, and the public.Prior to joining the SCF, Lee spent 20 years working on fisheries management at the state, interstate, federal, and international levels with both the US. Government and the non-profit sector. Most recently, he was the Director of U.S. Oceans for The Pew Charitable Trusts where he led Pew’s efforts to establish policies to end overfishing and promote ecosystem-based fisheries management. Before joining Pew, Crockett was executive director of the Marine Fish Conservation Network, the largest U.S. coalition dedicated to promoting the sustainable management of ocean fish. Prior to that, he was a fishery biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries Service, leading agency efforts to protect essential fish habitat. He also served as a staff member of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries.Crockett holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in biological oceanography from the University of Connecticut.

He has held positions at the Center for American Progress on their Poverty to Prosperity team, as Majority Staff Counsel for the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and in the Obama administration as a Policy Advisor at the U.S. Department of Education. Erik began his career in Washington, D.C., at the National Congress of American Indians Policy Research Center.He holds a J.D. from UCLA School of Law, an M.A. in American Indian Studies from UCLA’s Graduate Division, and a B.A. from Whittier College.

Lisa has a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Biology and Ecology from Michigan State University and a Master of Science degree in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. When not working, Lisa enjoys hiking, bicycling, snowshoeing, and spending time outside with her husband and child.

She lives just outside of Bellingham, WA with her husband and animals on a shy acre near the Lummi Nation on the Salish Sea.

After 20 years in foundation and university leadership jobs, I established Barnacle Strategies as my independent consulting and volunteering platform. I enjoy variety and so at a given time consulting clients might include foundations and funder affinity groups, partnership-oriented academic and research institutions, Indigenous people's organizations, and big or small NGOs. Projects and advising tend toward the creative and relevant, and often integrate environmental, socioeconomic, and biocultural strategies - especially place-based ones. I also help organizations recruit outstanding talent by managing executive searches and keep fresh by serving on several volunteer boards.

Rebecca Darwent Bio:
Rebecca Darwent is an internationally recognized expert in philanthropy and community-led initiatives. Her upcoming TED talk on the transformative power of community-led philanthropy is set to inspire individuals and organizations to embrace collaborative approaches in driving positive social change. With a diverse background spanning philanthropic advising, consulting, and global partnerships, Rebecca brings a wealth of knowledge and practical experience to all endeavors. She has led multimillion-dollar investments in equity, health, and education. She is currently a Senior Advisor to Philanthropy Together focussing on raising awareness of and funding for collaboratives, specifically those that are community-led. As a co-founder of the Foundation for Black Communities, Rebecca spearheaded fundraising, community engagement, and advocacy, resulting in a historic $200 million commitment to Black philanthropy by the Canadian government. Previously, Rebecca served as the Director of Global Partnerships at Singularity University, overseeing tech and education programs across five continents. She also worked as a Senior Policy Advisor to the Minister of Children and Youth Services in the Ontario provincial government, responsible for the Anti-Racism Directorate. Rebecca is a dedicated volunteer currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Black Communities, The Philanthropy Workshop Canada, and Laidlaw Foundation. She has been recognized as a Women Leaders for the World Fellow and honored as a Canadian Millennium Laureate.

John Esterle is recently retired as the  Co-Executive Director at The Whitman Institute, an independent foundation in San Francisco with a mission to advance equity through funding dialogue, relationship-building, and inclusive leadership. He is also the co-founder of Trust-Based Philanthropy. John explains the steps of trust-based philanthropy, and how a foundation can incorporate elements of the concepts within their own giving strategy.

John Esterle Bio:
John Esterle retired as Co-Executive Director of The Whitman Institute (TWI) in July 2022 when TWI, an independent foundation based in San Francisco, spent out all of its assets and ceased operations. TWI worked to advance social, political, and economic equity by funding dialogue, relationship building, and inclusive leadership. TWI also played a leading role in launching the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project in 2020, a five-year collaborative initiative to address the inherent power imbalances between foundations and nonprofits. John began his career at TWI in 1988 and became its Executive Director in 1998. He later led its transition from an operating to a grantmaking foundation as well as its decision to sunset the foundation. A past board president of Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement and the Rooftop PTA, he also served on the boards of The Germanacos Foundation, LeaderSpring, and Images and Voices of Hope. Currently, John is a board member of The Right Question Institute. Prior to joining TWI, his most notable job was directing a pilot project called Crime and the News Media, which featured a series of dialogues between journalists and advocates of alternatives to incarceration. John received my B.A. in Liberal Arts from the Hutchins School of Interdisciplinary Studies at Sonoma State University and my M.A. in Broadcast Communication Arts from San Francisco State University.
