Episode 117: Mobilising Movements with Esther Foreman

Épisode 117

mardi 27 août 2024Durée 43:40

"Think Big, Get Shit Done, Have Fun"

Esther Foreman has spent 20 years in the social-good space, time spent running award-winning campaigns, supporting enterprise and building teams. Her career went from Doctors without Borders, Shelter, Help the Aged and Mencap to the Social Change Agency, where she supports over 600 organisations to grow, innovate and support people through fiscal and process hosting.

We start with some excellent (though quite niche) holiday advice from James before we wonder whether our latest guest is related to Kenneth, and then we dive into a packed episode including a failed PhD, how leadership and cults go wrong and the magic in decentralised technology. There’s a life-changing meeting with Bob Geldof, a reminder of Kenneth’s cover-star status and the unique challenges for middle-children. Then there’s female founders, why you should choose a chauffeur over a babysitter and a cool origin story. We dive into our risk-appetite, getting the money to those making the impact and a call to arms for mutual aid.

It’s a belter.

Episode 116: Are you an Artist, a Manager or an Entrepreneur with Rob Woods

mardi 23 juillet 2024Durée 01:13:01

Our guest on the podcast this week has worked in fundraising since the year 2000. If you can find a fundraising trainer more passionate and purpose-driven about the sector, we’re yet to find them.

His business, Brightspot Fundraising, has helped thousands of individuals to unlock their potential in fundraising. Offering a series of expertly constructed courses and programmes we’ve been huge fans of this guest and his role in the sectors for many years. So much so, that this will be his second appearance on the pod, originally joining us in Dec 2017 in what was our 20th episode.

We’re pleased to welcome back Rob Woods to the Do More good podcast.

Episode 108: What to expect at IFC 2023 with Willeke Van Rijn

vendredi 29 septembre 2023Durée 56:29

"It's a community coming together"

James and Kenneth struggle to contain their excitement around the upcoming International Fundraising Congress, mainly due to the prospect of dressing up as their hometown myths and legends. Fortunately they are joined by CEO of The Resource Alliance, Willeke Van Rijn to bring some sense (and a sense of health and safety) to proceedings.

We hear about the young eighteen year old who dreamt of seeing the world and the career which followed, working in a variety of roles and continents before taking the helm at the organisers of the IFC. There’s passion, curiosity, pressure and ambition. We talk about the expectations on the event, who to look out for and what not to miss. There’s news from backstage, how to make the most of the the experience and ensuring you scoop every spoonful of custard from the jar.

LAST CHANCE PROMOTION

In collaboration with our friends at The Resource Alliance, we are delighted to offer £175 off tickets to the event coming up on the 17th October 2023 for Do More Good listeners. I know, right?
Simply use the code IFC175 when registering, but hurry, we only have a handful of tickets. Head to www.resource-alliance.org and we’ll see you in Noordwijk!

Episode 38: Matt Collins spills all on going agency side

mardi 8 octobre 2019Durée 46:56

“Darling, I’m on the 7.10“

Our favourite emojis is a hot topic this week as we chat to Matt Collins about the career which led to him setting up his own agency. James takes a day off for a climate rally in order to avoid school whilst Kenneth is top of the class, earning his FA badges. Matt tells us how he dreamt of joining Childline as a kid then worked there as an adult. We admit to the temptation of working for profit, before adhering to Matt’s Dad’s wishes to do good, perhaps on the radio. Kenneth’s Dad, it turns out, is Welsh.

There’s a discussion on why colleagues are leaving the sector, how to build a passionate team and the texts Mrs Kenneth receives at ten-past seven. We chat mental health and therapy, stay up late at night and day-dream about winning awards. There’s the future of the sector and terrifying twenty year olds, all before we get to the all-new quickfire round.

Episode 37: Rosie and Simon get sociable

mardi 1 octobre 2019Durée 49:49

"Work hard and be nice."

A private members club, no less, is our venue for this week's episode, not the kind of place you'd expect to see the cereal box challenge. James is limping and Kenneth gets emotional, fortunately Rosie and Simon are on hand to talk us through the opportunities and pitfalls of social media. We learn about frustrated showjumpers, reducing screen time and the importance of good hair in job interviews.

We chat mental health, develop super-powers and bring our authentic selves to the Twitter party. James swots up on Bake Off, Kenneth is the modern-day Dickens and we all get too many notifications.

Episode 36: Taking a gamble on sport with Sue Anstiss MBE

mardi 17 septembre 2019Durée 52:25

“There’s a Peruvian Division Two game on“

This week on the Kenneth Foreman Podcast we start with a brief recap from our summer holidays and some now utterly redundant excitement around the Ashes. Our guest is genuinely impressed at some private investigation before we’re disappointed that she didn’t bring the breakfast samples. Sue Anstiss MBE (no less) joins the show to talk us through her career and how she went from selling chocolate from the boot of her car to eclipsing her siblings and securing the long-awaited GB vest.

We hear about how she set up her agency at just 26, the power of sport to change lives and, if you listen carefully, how to correctly pronounce Stockholm. There’s an exclusive live-on-air plus a reminder of what staple should always form part of a successful campaign. We talk about challenges in the wider industry and how to keep a team motivated before we get into a discussion around the prevalence of gambling in sport and what we can do to combat it.

James finds love on the cross country course, Kenneth turns down a big-money sponsorship opportunity and we all get a lesson in 21st century role models.

Episode 35: What's the Puff Story with Ethical Design

mardi 3 septembre 2019Durée 55:50

“Ultimately, you need people who care“

We kick off with a round-up on nicknames this week before we hear how Puff Story started her career in New York at the age of 21. She went on to swap the bright lights of the Big Apple for the bright sparks of the Silicon South and joined an agency focused solely on life-saving, life-changing or problem-alleviating projects, without any compromise and a crazy business model.

We learn about setting your organisation’s mission, selecting staff and inspiring the next generation. We hear about dodging hurricanes, delivering blood and adopting the Top Gun approach to training. James accidentally downloads YouTube, Kenneth checks out some coarse fishing videos and Puff predicts an imminent podcast-wreck. There’s the dangers of the infinite scroll, dark patterns and how we can employ ethical design to sleep well at night. Plus there’s risk-aversion, the unstoppable rise of voice and consideration of the limits to Alexa’s power. There’s time for Nikos to think he’s won it and the best nickname of all time.

We do not, however, discuss AI.

Episode 34: Discussing Diversity, Digital and Don Corleone with Zoe Amar

mardi 20 août 2019Durée 46:40

“Everything is on fire, please come and sort it out“

This is one for the scrapbooks as Kenneth and James record an episode to listen back to when they’re fifty seven. To help, Zoe Amar joins them describing how she turned her back on mergers & acquisitions, forwent investment banking and instead used law to help people. The legal profession proved useful when switching to the charity sector, not mention her involvement with the feared St Alban’s mafia, of which she is a key player.

Zoe describes how she extinguishes fires, defeats online trolls and avoids the all you can eat buffet. Plus we’re talking about how you can integrate your work rather than layer it, giving the supporter a better experience. Zoe questions leaders in the sector and provides the stats to show the pace of change has been far too slow recently.

James scraps his plans for an audience survey whilst Kenneth likes the look of the corner office, so Zoe describes her own experiences of diversity in the third sector giving us some quick wins and gives the guys some tips on how to attract some new listeners to the show.

Episode 33: Turning adversity into opportunity with Claire Warner

mardi 6 août 2019Durée 01:03:38

"A lady I will never meet saved my life"

After James spent a couple of days furiously scribbling notes and Kenneth spent hours practising his presentation, your hosts bumped into Claire Warner in the bar at the IoF Convention.

They got chatting about her career, how it all began as a ballsy 21 year old who thought she could secure sponsorship without any experience whatsoever. There's the benefits of a life involving artistic endeavour and helping people to be the best they can be.

Claire describes how people buy passion and Kenneth worries about how he has become the average of the six people he spends most time with. There's just time for James to wonder why people listen to outsiders more than insiders before things get emotional...

Claire details her love-hate relationship with social media, despite the fact it saved her life and propelled part of her to viral stardom, securing offers of TV appearances around the world. Our guest tells her story from diagnosis to paying it forward through the support of strangers and how she wants to improve the sector for everyone.

Episode 32: Chatting career crossroads with Joe Freeman

mardi 23 juillet 2019Durée 46:10

"I speak in emoji sometimes."

Following his hit blog post on his future in the sector we chat to wannabe-vet Joe Freeman about his roles to date and where he plans to go as he steps into the big office. We manage to keep a straight face as Kenneth details his childhood ambitions to become a doctor and lament the loss of the James' Jolly Newspaper from the presses.

Joe describes the genesis of digital teams in charities and how we're monitoring the next generation of leaders coming to the fore. We hear what it takes to become Insta-famous and how they align with the skills Joe looks for in applicants to his teams. We also highlight some great work being done at the moment and the highlights of Joe's career.

K-Dizzle sneaks in a mention of New Media Age magazine, we question whether we need to be more ethically aware in choosing platforms, how conversations are turning private and force Joe to decide live on air where his next role will be. Joe remains steadfast in his refusal to boost James' Twitter followers so in an act of petty vengance we leave in the section we promised to edit out.
