Disney World Restaurants Vibe Check

If you've spent any time at all hanging out with the Gold Key Adventurers, you know we have a lot of opinions about the best places to eat and drink around Walt Disney World. For this week's episode, we're going to throw that all out. We're talking restaurants, but totally ignoring the food and beverage part - you know, their whole reason for exising. Instead, we're going to rate the best (and some of the worst) eateries on Disney property based solely on their decor and atmosphere.

The atmosphere of a restaurant is almost as important as the food they serve - if the vibes aren't right, the meal just won't be enjoyable. When you add Disney's tendency to theme the heck out of everything, and write extensive background stories for every bathroom and snack stand to the equation, the atmosphere of a restaurant can sometimes even elevate an average meal to something more memorable than it deserves to be.

In this episode, we go around the virtual table and discuss some of our picks for Walt Disney World restaurants with the best atmosphere, as well as some that receive a special dishonorable mention and could use a refurb. In no particular order, some of the spots we talk about are Magic Kingdom's Skipper Canteen, Steakhouse 71, Oga's Cantina, Citrico's, Chef Mickey's, and Abracadar. Can you guess which get a thumbs up, and which a thumbs down? What restaurants at Walt Disney World Resort get your vote for best atmosphere, and which just don't pass the vibe check?

Icon of the Seas Trip Report

This week, the Gold Key Adventurers Society gathers to share some tips on how to beat the heat while visiting Walt Disney World in Florida during the peak summer season. To avoid the scorching heat, we suggest going to the parks early in the morning and late in the evening, taking breaks during the middle of the day, and spending time at the pool when it's hottest. For those staying overnight or longer, choosing to stay at a Walt Disney World resort hotel can enhance the overall experience by taking advantage of early entry and extended park hours, and hopping between parks to avoid the heat from the hottest ones, such as Animal Kingdom and Epcot. When it comes to seeking ways to escape the heat, we share with listeners the various indoor attractions that provide a good respite. The Magic Kingdom has indoor attractions like PhilharMagic and Enchanted Tales with Belle. In Epcot, indoor options like Living with the Land and The Three Caballeros boat ride are recommended. In Hollywood Studios, the light show at night is beautiful as is Toy Story Midway Mania. We also share our favorite cooling gear for staying comfortable and suggest using handheld fans, lightweight, rechargeable fans, and cooling neck gaiters. We also caution listeners against spending too much on overpriced cooling towels and suggest using a bandana or wet ball cap. Additionally, we share fun facts about the Disney parks, including some history and trivia. We also discuss some of our favorite pools and water attractions in Walt Disney World, including Stormalong Bay and the Big Blue Pool. We even suggest finding rest and respite at pool bars and sit-down meals on the hot days. We emphasize the importance of staying on-site to quickly return to the resort and avoiding traveling off-property during peak season. For those looking to relax and avoid the heat on Florida's hottest summer days, some tips include arranging for preferred parking or utilizing the Skyliner. We also recommend indulging in some treats like Dole Whip or a citrus swirl, and drinks from Trader Sam's, and the pool bars at Riviera and Nomad Lounge. We also discuss an upcoming Indiana Jones movie and share some alternative options for cooling down, taking a humorous note in the popular song and making a funny joke. We close the show with some recommendations for staying hydrated while visiting theme parks and for avoiding heat stroke and dehydration. We suggest bringing water bottles or simply asking for water at quick serve counters. We also discuss drinking electrolyte beverages like Powerade or smart water for salt replenishment. And we remind our listeners that it's important to stay cool and not party too hard during the hot Florida summers, and to take breaks when necessary. 1. That’s right Dan. Courtesy of ThemeParkProfessor.com, first we have a report that Disney’s Magical Express shuttle service will be retired starting January 1, 2022. Here’s Disney’s official statement: ““Vacationers have more options to choose from than ever for transportation, including ride-share services that save time and offer more flexibility to go where they want, when they want. In light of this shift, when Disney Resort hotel bookings open for stays in 2022, we will no longer offer Disney’s Magical Express service for airport transportation, starting with arrivals Jan. 1, 2022. We will continue to operate the service for new and existing reservations made at Disney Resort hotels for arrivals throughout 2021. Additionally, complimentary transportation options – such as buses, monorails and Disney Skyliner – will continue to be available within Walt Disney World Resort for Disney Resort hotel guests, including to and from all four theme parks.”- Disney Parks”

Roger Chapin, a spokesperson for Mears transportation, the company that provides the buses for Disney’s Magical Express told Orlando’s Spectrum News that ““Walt Disney made us aware of their decision. While we are disappointed Disney will no longer offer this service, we intend to continue offering transportation services between the airport and all area theme parks and hotels to meet the demand of our visitors now and in the future.”

In other Walt Disney World news, Extra Magic Hours have officially been retired at the Florida theme parks. In a statement, Disney reps said “Disney Resort hotel guests and guests of other select hotels will be able to enjoy more fun with 30-minute early entry to ANY theme park, EVERY day. It’ll be a great way to get a jump start on your Disney day, no matter the day! he new early theme park entry benefit helps us better spread visitation across all four theme parks, while providing added flexibility by giving guests extra early park time on each day of their vacation and in the park of their choosing. Please note that guests need valid admission and a park reservation made via the Disney Park Pass system to enter a theme park.”

While it sounds like these are monumental losses to the Disney experience,  it’s really not all that bad, and there’s still a world of reasons why staying on site at a Disney resort hotel is a great value. There’s a lot to be said for staying inside the “Disney bubble”, where you don’t have to leave the magic when you’re done playing in the parks. Transportation between hotels and the theme parks is much more convenient with Disney’s complimentary internal transportation system, and makes it easy to take a mid day break when the sun is hottest and the parks are most crowded. The resort hotels themselves have a ton of great options for dining and activities to keep you busy and entertained, including biking,fishing,great pools, kids activities,painting and craft opportunities,tours,movies under the stars and in the pools,world class food and beverage options, you get the point. 

While Disney’s Magical Express will be missed for its value and convenience, there’s still great options for getting to your hotel if you don’t want to rent a car. While there’s not a lot of details yet, as I mentioned Mears appears to be planning some sort of shuttle service to the resorts. You can also get a lyft or uber from the airport for a reasonable rate. The Brightline Rail system connecting Orlando International Airport to Disney Springs is still slated to open in 2023. Now that dining plans are back at Walt Disney World, it’s time to start planning all the tasted meals you’re going to use those dining credits on in 2024! We’re kicking off a summer of Disney Dining this week with a look at some of our favorite under rated quick service and table service restaurants around Walt Disney World, as well as the spots we think are totally over rated, and not worth spending your precious meal credits on.  We also want to share with you a couple new/newly updated spots that we really think you should check out next time you visit Walt Disney World.

• Should we give Be Our Guest another chance?
• Magic Kingdom dining could use some help.
• Always eat at the Jungle Navigation Co. Skipper Canteen!
• EPCOT is dining heaven, at least as long as you stay in World Showcase.
• Hollywood Studios doesn’t seem like it has a lot of great dining, but we actually had a long list of spots we like there. 
• Animal Kingdom has tons of hidden gems, especially if you like Asian food or barbecue. 
• Disney Springs has too many options to count, but a ton of them are great! Don’t pass on House of Blues, and check out the takeout window versions of some of the nicer table service locations. 
• We didn’t have enough time to dig into the dining options at the resort hotels, but Heather and Jeff recently tried a few new/updated spots they wanted to recommend. The updated menu at Narcoosee’s at the Grand Floridian has elevated the restaurant from “meh” to “must try”! Rosa Mexicana at the Dolphin is elevated Mexican food that is more than worth the trip to sample. Amare at the new Swan Reserve tower is a fantastic spot for some fine Mediterranean style dining. 
• We have a long list of places we still need to eat at! Keep an eye out for more culinary adventures this summer.

Well guys, we made it. 2020 threw everything it had at us, from a global pandemic and the associated hit to the global economy and travel industry, to murder hornets, solar flares, wild fires, volcanic eruptions, a whole buttload of hurricanes, and the most...eventful presidential election anyone could have imagined, and we made it out the other end. We baked bread and planted gardens, did just about everything virtually over video conferences, spent so so so so much more time with our families, found safe new ways to fulfill our wanderlust, and dreamed about where we’d go and the adventures we’d have once the rest of the world opened back up to travel. Let’s start by taking a look back

• In January we, started off with a look at some of the exciting new attractions that were slated to debut in theme parks in 2020-and some of them even opened this year. 

We also talked about cuddling cows for therapeutic and other reasons at a B and B in upstate New York (http://bit.ly/CowCuddlesGKAS), some of the outlandish things we’ve overheard guests say while visiting the Disney theme parks, and Jess took us on a tour of Denmark’s sick, twisted theme park masterpiece, Bon Bon Land (http://bit.ly/GKASBonBonLand).

• In February, we made some travel trend predictions for 2020 that mostly didn’t pan out. Maybe they’ll come back around in 2021. We also learned about the majestic quokka, visited a bizarre and slightly sad military theme park in Transylvania (ArsenalParkKTTW),and bathed in Ramen in the most savory spa in Japan (tp://bit.ly/RamenSpaKTTW) We also took a look at some of the best hidden gems at Walt Disney World, and visited the Phallological museum in Iceland (http://bit.ly/PhallologicalMuseumGKAS). Then we talked about all our favorite Disney Parks parties, Barbecue came to EPCOT’s American pavilion, and we learned all about Tokyo’s Penis Festival (http://bit.ly/KanamaraMatsuri )

• March is when things started to get a little weird for most of us, and we started it out with a visit to a themed experience in a Soviet bunker Lithuania which lets you see what it was like to live in the USSR (http://bit.ly/SovietBunkNewsStory). We also took a quick trip to Walt Disney World right before it temporarily shut down, where we experienced everyone’s favorite NBA Experience at Disney Springs, and the newly opened Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. Then we shared some of our favorite ways to bring the magic of the Disney parks into our homes for 2020’s worst travel trend, staycations, and explored not one but two theme parks dedicated to letting you experience the Buddhist version of hell. 

• April started with travel dreams as we discussed our bucket list destinations with special guests and our personal troubadours the Outer Vibe (www.outervibe.com), and Jess introduced us to South Korea’s Loveland Park, a racy sculpture garden (https://bit.ly/LovelandParkNSFW). Then we dared each other to get adventurous with weird and wonderful new experiences around the world, went on a “Night Walk” border crossing experience in Mexico (https://to.pbs.org/2VJoaBV), and finished out the month with a lesson in how to survive a bear attack where we met our friend Punchy The Bear (https://bit.ly/AoMBearAttack), explored the creepiest items in museums around the world including the infamous NecroPants (https://bit.ly/CreepiestItemsAtTheMuseum), and took a tour of all our favorite bars in Walt Disney World, 

• In May we were still thirsty, so we took our bark crawl to Universal Orlando Resort, and also visited a South Korean theme park dedicated to all aspects of the humble bathroom (https://bit.ly/RestroomCulturalPark). Then we explored some of our favorite travel movies, and shared our end of term research papers on US travel destinations and theme park history.

• June brought news of the Orlando theme parks reopening, so we spent some time looking at what a trip to a theme park in the times of the big sick would look like, Heather shared a trip report from the freshly reopened Universal Orlando Resort, and we explored the all American road trip vacation. We also visited a real life West World style amusement park in Japan, met the Social Distancing Skunk Ape, the Wizard of Bras, and our good friend Skinny Pete when we visited the National Hobo Convention in Britt, Iowa.

• In July we continued our look at classic Summer Vacation destinations with episodes on amusement parks and water parks, before closing out the month with a trip report from the freshly reopened Walt Disney World Resort. We also talked about exploring the outer reaches of earth in a space balloon, and the new Jason Bourne Stuntacular, with special effects so real you don’t know where the real world ends and the screen begins. We visited the skull crushing Action Park in New Jersey (https://bit.ly/ActionParkGKAS), learned to scream inside our hearts ,and toured the sadly defunct World of Sid and Marty Krofty theme park (https://bit.ly/WorldOfSidAndMartyKroftAO). 

• In August we celebrated our 1 year anniversary with an Ask Me Anything episode. We also talked about our travel dreams for 2021, and took a tour of the best restaurants at Walt Disney World theme parks and resorts. 

• September was mostly devoted to Universal Orlando Resort, with a tour of all our favorite things to do at Universal, plus a look at our favorite places to eat, shop, and be entertained at Disney Springs. 

• Then we kicked off October with a trip report from our visit to Universal, before spending most of the month getting spooky-we visited haunted destinations around the world, and took a deep dive into the Haunted Mansion. We also did a little armchair imagineering and designed our own theme park rides based on Disney movies, and learned about the secret world of Japanese cuddle cafes. 

• In November, we went shopping, gave a preview of Walt Disney World Holiday celebrations, played another round of Unpopular Opinions, and planned our perfect Disney day with a sports style draft.
