Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. Feed Your Head: The Great Jefferson Airplane Deep Dive is an audio documentary that was consciously crafted to act as the ultimate repository of fact and opinion on one of the greatest bands to ever walk the face of the earth. It includes long-form interviews, commentary on their history, wild stories, and star ratings for every release.

Part 23 of the series features Jack and I (in his penultimate contribution to this series) doing a deep dive on the songs off the band’s final studio album for almost twenty years, Long John Silver.

Here are just a few of the many things that Jack discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • Why Jack never wrote a solo composition for the Airplane beyond the title track of this album;
  • Jack’s defense of this late-in-the-game attempt by the band to pull it together one last time;
  • A paean to Papa John Creach’s contribution to the band;
  • Jack’s thoughts on the twin poke-to-the-eyes of the Catholic Church on the record;
  • And an in-depth, track-by-track deep dive on every song off Long John Silver.

Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. The Crazy Tale of Quicksilver Messenger Service is an audio documentary series that was crafted to act as the ultimate assemblage of fact and opinion on one of the greatest bands to ever walk the face of the earth. This 8-episode series is built around a 2 1/2 hour interview with The Patti Smith Group’s Lenny Kaye, and the main event: an unprecedentedly detailed five-hour interview with last man standing David Freiberg, a very special experience that—regardless of how you feel about the group—will absolutely blow your mind with its unique twists and turns. There’s in-depth commentary on their history, a slew of endlessly wild stories, and star ratings for every release. Prepare yourselves: Lenny Kaye’s the wind up, and David Freiberg is very much the pitch.

This is Part 4 of the series—and part 1 of my discussion with David—in which we cover the completely insane early days of Quicksilver Messenger Service, packed with stories that seem more like mythical tall tales than true events.

Here are just a few of the many things that David discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • His early jobs actually working for the railroad;
  • A rundown of his three distinct pot bust arrests;
  • How he met Dino Valenti, which led directly to his involvement with Quicksilver;
  • Trying to get the band off the ground while both Dino and David were behind bars;
  • The period when the band lived together on a soon-to-be-condemned series of quasi-houseboats;
  • The period when the band lived in what they described as a “Victorian insane asylum”;
  • The cowboy period when the band lived out on a horse-filled ranch while The Grateful Dead lived nearby and got into an Indian trip;
  • And the derivation of their crazy name.

This is Part 3 of the series, a deep-dive into the early days of Dino Valenti, a fascinating chronology of the events that led to his initial vision for Quicksilver Messenger Service. In addition, we examine his one and only 1968 solo album.

Here are just a few of the many things discussed in this episode of Discograffiti:

  • Dino’s carny background, and his confusing slew of noms de plumes;
  • His early relationship with a certain legendary Andy Warhol superstar, about whom his song “Let’s Get Together” may have been written;
  • An overview of Dino Valenti’s Lost Recordings compilation;
  • How Dino funded the legal representation for his marijuana bust;
  • The second legendary song with which Dino became entangled, and how he got his hands on it;
  • The incredible story behind how Dino’s record label intentionally sought revenge against him;
  • Carol Kaye’s least favorite studio date of all time…with Dino Valenti;
  • And some behind-the-scenes tales that shed badly needed light on Dino’s one-of-a-kind solo record.

  • Marty Balin splits the band, and Papa John Creach joins;
  • The working title of “Pretty As You Feel”, custom-designed to steer it clear of radio play;
  • The great balance of songs that were built up from jam sessions for the LP;
  • Whether or not Jack empathized with the pain inherent in Jorma’s lyrics for “Third Week In The Chelsea”;
  • The unique way in which Jorma wrote “Chelsea”;

  • The crucial part that Mary Lattimore’s harp contributions play in their new, sample-free sound world;
  • Pete’s doo-wop obsession;

Part 20 of the series covers the eventful 20-month period from Volunteers’ November 1969 release to the protracted recording sessions for Bark—which concluded in July 1971—in the style of an audiobook.

Here are just a few of the many things discussed in this episode of Discograffiti:

  • The critical response to Volunteers;
  • What went down during the Airplane’s set at Altamont;
  • The end of the decade (both literally and metaphorically);
  • The Airplane’s 1970 single, their sole 45-only release;
  • Marty & Spencer are out / Joey & Papa John are in;
  • Hot Tuna releases their debut;
  • A lengthy examination of Blows Against The Empire, which represents the birth of the Jefferson Starship name;

Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. Prior to barreling headfirst into the creation of Discograffiti’s upcoming Husker Du audio documentary series, Dave Gebroe talked with Bob Mould about the resurrection of his other great power trio: Sugar.

Here are just a few of the many things that Bob discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • Why Sugar ended after a run of such massive success;
  • The rough circumstances in Bob’s life & career from which Sugar was initially born;
  • How Copper Blue and Beaster were recorded in one great simultaneous rush;
  • The difficulties faced and overcome by Bob, David, and Malcolm during the creation of File Under: Easy Listening;
  • Bob’s favorite Sugar records in descending order;
  • The types of music that Bob makes just for himself, without thinking of releasing;
  • The closure he was able to reach with Grant Hart at the end of his life;
  • And the two records Bob claims are the standard-bearers, against which he can’t help but compare everything he makes.

Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. Part 12 of the series takes a brief breather from the Jefferson Airplane trajectory, as we broaden our focus to take in two historically significant musical firsts that went down during the Summer of Love—the very first rock and pop music festival (The Magic Mountain Music Festival, held one week before Monterey Pop!), and the very first bootleg record (Bob Dylan’s The Great White Wonder).

Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. Host Dave Gebroe talks with OG Love mainstay Johnny Echols about the classic psych band’s entire recorded output (for 4 1/2 hours total), with commentary on their history, wild stories, and star ratings—from both Dave and Johnny—for every release. 7 & 7 & 7 Is: The Definitive 21-Episode Story Of Arthur Lee & Love was consciously crafted to act as the ultimate repository of fact and opinion on one of the greatest bands to ever walk the face of the earth, the almighty Love.

Part 22 is the final episode of Discograffiti’s unparalleled Love series, which heralds the return of Johnny Echols, who—upon hearing the first several episodes and realizing that this truly was, indeed, the ultimate repository of fact and opinion on his band, after all—offered to answer every remaining question that still lingered, as this is going to be his final time plumbing the depths of Love’s legacy.

Here are just a few of the many things that Johnny discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • The original plan for recording “Revelation” for Da Capo;
  • Why Johnny was wary and uncomfortable around Bryan MacLean back in the day;
  • The alternate career path not taken in Johnny’s life;
  • Stories about playing with Jerry Garcia and Moby Grape;
  • The only band that Johnny conceded to blowing Love off the stage;
  • The well-known vocalist Arthur was attempting to emulate on “Your Mind And We Belong Together”;
  • And saying goodbye to Arthur—Johnny’s best friend and musical brother in arms—right before he passed away.

Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. Host Dave Gebroe talks with podcast OG Joe Kennedy about the classic psych band’s entire recorded output, with commentary on their history, wild stories, and star ratings for every release, including long-form interviews with both Johnny Echols and the members of Baby Lemonade, who’ve served as Love now for coming up on 35 years. 7 & 7 & 7 Is: The Definitive 21-Episode Story Of Arthur Lee & Love was consciously crafted to act as the ultimate repository of fact and opinion on one of the greatest bands to ever walk the face of the earth, the almighty Love.

Part 21 was initially intended as the final episode to Discograffiti’s Love series (it’s now the penultimate). Astoundingly, the insanity does not stop here…if anything, it’s jacked up a few notches before Arthur takes flight once and for all.

Here are just a few of the many things that Joe discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • Arthur’s medical maladies, along with his reluctance to talk about them with everyone in his life;
  • An inside scoop about what Arthur was capable of versus what he was releasing;
  • The details behind the incredibly chaotic final tour planned for Arthur & Baby Lemonade;
  • The very last vocal that Arthur ever recorded;
  • The insane story of The Memphis Love;
  • Arthur’s passing;
  • Joe and I pick our top 3 Love records, plus our least favorite;
  • And an in-depth, track-by-track deep dive on the On Earth Must Be EP, Arthur’s very last Love studio release before his passing.

Part 9 of the series features Jack and I doing a deep, deep dive on the songs off the band’s classic sophomore effort.

Here are just a few of the many things that Jack discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • How “Today” came to be;
  • Recording “White Rabbit”;
  • The classic song that was included almost as an afterthought;
  • The slow launch of the record, because of its flop first single;
  • And an in-depth, track-by-track deep dive on half the songs off Surrealistic Pillow.

Prepare for some hardcore revelations. Part 20 is the second part of my raw, honest interview with Mike Randle, Rusty Squeezebox, and David Green, three-fourths of the band Baby Lemonade, who’ve effectively acted as Love now for over 30 years.

Here are just a few of the many things that Baby Lemonade discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • How they all pitched in alongside Arthur to reach for the stars upon his release from prison;
  • The story most illustrative of Arthur’s personality ever, involving a dildo in a swimming pool;
  • The Forever Changes victory lap: Arthur on his best behavior, and Arthur on his worst behavior;
  • The turning point, when things started going straight downhill;
  • The attempts made to squeeze out just one more Forever Changes-level Arthur Lee masterpiece;
  • How Johnny Echols wound up stepping into Arthur’s rather large shoes;
  • Plus if and how this thing could possibly continue even after Johnny.

It includes long-form interviews, commentary on their history, wild stories, and star ratings for every release.

Part 7 of the series covers the period from January 1966 to October 31, 1966—that is, from the release of their debut album to Grace joining the group and recording album number two—in the style of an audiobook.

Here are just a few of the many things discussed in this episode of Discograffiti:

  • The Airplane’s first major press coverage;
  • How The Haight handled being overrun by floods of lost children who were looking to live this new lifestyle they’d seen on TV;
  • Signe’s farewell;
  • A brief history of both Grace Slick and The Great! Society;
  • The creation of the original “Somebody To Love” & “White Rabbit”;
  • Grace joins Jefferson Airplane;
  • And an exclusive interview with Ruthann Friedman—writer of The Association’s #1 Summer of Love smash “Windy”—who recounts nearly becoming Jefferson Airplane’s vocalist before Grace wound up getting the gig.

  • And their collective assessment of their recorded legacy as Love.

Part 18 covers the early 1990s to the early 2000s, a period which encompasses both the nadir and zenith of Arthur’s career—that is, his stint in prison and his redemptive, post-release victory lap tour of Forever Changes—by which time Arthur’s experienced the kind of adulation of which he’d been deserving since a large audience had last paid attention.

Here are just a few of the many things that Joe discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • The Origin Story: how Baby Lemonade wound up crossing paths and then working with Arthur Lee;
  • What spurned the unfortunate early exit of Baby Lemonade bassist Henry Liu;
  • Their first recording session together, and why it was an immediate red flag for the new backing band;
  • The facts behind the evening that landed Arthur in prison;
  • Why a man named Gene Kraut was almost entirely responsible for the rehabilitation of Arthur’s reputation;
  • The new batch of Arthur Lee material, and the central conundrum it posed;
  • The big comeback falls apart during their homecoming show at Royce Hall;
  • And an overview of Arthur & Baby Lemonade’s “Girl On Fire” single.

Part 17 covers a fifteen year period (from the late 1970s to the early 1990s) during which the wild choices Arthur made in his life overshadowed his music as a priority…and yet still somehow made him no less fascinating.

Here are just a few of the many things that Joe discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • Arthur’s less than triumphant reunion with Bryan MacLean for a one-off live show;
  • The unfortunate double function his bandmates at the time may have served, to Arthur’s probable detriment;
  • Arthur finally exhumes the sole outtake from Forever Changes and commits it to wax;
  • Inarguably the worst remake from Arthur’s back catalog, a misfire on a level almost incomprehensibly misguided;
  • The arrests start to pile up;
  • Arthur starts taking business advice from mobsters;
  • Enter Baby Lemonade;
  • And an in-depth, track-by-track deep dive on every song off 1981’s Arthur Lee and 1992’s Arthur Lee And Love.

Part 5 of the series features Jack and I doing a deep, deep dive on the making of the band’s debut album. Expect deliriously interesting digressions.

Here are just a few of the many things that Jack discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • Recollections about the contracts he may or may not have signed;
  • The way that the album was recorded;
  • A discussion about the blurb on the back cover, which empties out into a fascinating discussion about the ideals of the 1960s;
  • The differences between Signe Toly and Grace Slick;
  • What Jack felt like they got right in the Sixties;
  • And a conversation that veers so beautifully, so organically, into one of my all-time favorite digressions in Discograffiti history, exploring the legacy of the hippie era.

Part 16 covers a little-known but unbelievably fascinating era during which Arthur was afforded his final substantial opportunity, and what happened with that opportunity in Arthur’s dubiously capable hands.

Here are just a few of the many things that Joe discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • Arthur Lee bringing the funk in a big way;
  • The great lost Love song, and in many ways the true epilogue to Forever Changes;
  • Arthur’s final big chance;
  • What you get if you’re Eric Clapton and you’ve asked Arthur to open for you;
  • That time Robert Plant and Jimmy Page swung by to meet Arthur;
  • That time Arthur lived out of his car…but with a driver;
  • And an in-depth, track-by-track deep dive on every song off Black Beauty and Reel To Real.

Here are just a few of the many things discussed in this episode of Discograffiti:

  • Grace Slick, Skip Spence, and Spencer Dryden enter the picture;
  • Members begin to play musical chairs as they edge closer and closer to the classic line-up;
  • Their early audition for Phil Spector;

Here are just a few of the many things that Joe discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • The two months during which Arthur had a major label deal, and what he did with that opportunity;
  • Whether or not the music created during that time was even intended for human ears (or any other species, for that matter);
  • Arthur’s transition into shooting cocaine;
  • That time he called the cops…on himself;
  • A new slew of material that trumpeted his new vegetarian lifestyle;
  • Arthur’s continuing insistence on sing-song vengeance tunes written for backstabbing friends;
  • And an in-depth, track-by-track deep dive on every song off Dear You (a.k.a. Love Lost) and Arthur’s solo debut Vindicator.

Part 14 covers the Hendrix-heavy moves of the False Start era, as Arthur’s Love greeted the new decade with his spirited take on the funk-inflected hard rock of the time, yet another large stylistic move away from the Forever Changes era that his fans so desperately craved.

Here are just a few of the many things that Joe discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • The rekindling of Arthur’s friendship with his old buddy Jimi Hendrix only months before his death;
  • Details about the session during which Jimi joined Love, and what was played;
  • The major similarities—and glaring differences—between Arthur & Jimi;
  • The band that Arthur and Jimi were supposedly planning on assembling before his untimely passing;
  • The crumbling of this next line-up, as the substance imbibing begin to gain steam in Arthur’s life;
  • That time Arthur got arrested for zapping people with a cattle prod;

Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. Host Dave Gebroe talks with legendary Jefferson Airplane bassist Jack Casady about the classic psych band’s entire recorded output (for over a dozen hours total), with commentary on their history, wild stories, and star ratings for every release. Feed Your Head: The Great Jefferson Airplane Deep Dive was consciously crafted to act as the ultimate repository of fact and opinion on one of the greatest bands to ever walk the face of the earth, the almighty Jefferson Airplane. As a celebration of the kick-off to what is going to be one hell of a wild ride, THIS ENTIRE EPISODE WILL BE AVAILABLE FREE OF CHARGE ON DISCOGRAFFITI’S PUBLIC STREAM! (...with the implied agreement that, in return, you’ll subscribe to our Patreon to tune in to the rest of the series!)

Going in to this interview, I was under the impression that this might be the only time I’d ever get with Jack. However, after he experienced the legendary “Discograffiti effect,” Jack generously afforded me carte blanche to talk at great length about each of the Airplane’s records. Part 2 is from my first interview with Jack, in which we cover his life story from the Summer of Love up to the late 1980s Airplane reunion.

Here are just a few of the many things that Jack discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • Monterey Pop, Woodstock, & Altamont;
  • How he rolled with Paul Kantner’s more revolutionary material;
  • The details behind how Jack wound up playing on Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile”;
  • How speed skating may have saved his life during the dissolution of Jefferson Airplane;
  • The wilderness years, during which Jack did some of his most vital work as bassist for the San Francisco punk band SVT;
  • His true feelings on the 1989 Airplane reunion;
  • And making After Bathing At Baxter’s, Crown Of Creation, Bless Its Pointed Little Head, Volunteers, Bark, Long John Silver, and Jefferson Airplane.

257A. Rudy Fischmann's "Episode 18": The World's First (And Last?) Triple-Album Cancer Charity Rock Opera (Discograffiti Soldiers Of Sound Podcast Ep 127)06 May 202601:14:33

So it was exactly six years ago this month that primary SOS host Rudy Fischmann started work on an ill-advised project— a rock opera. It was ill-advised because Rudy is actually living with brain cancer, and lacks enough left hand coordination to actually play any instruments traditionally, nor the energy. Still, he’s managed to pull it off with the help of 60 other people from 12 nations around the globe. It may not be major musical history, but it’s an absolute first of its kind.

So minor music history?

The whole thing serves as a fundraiser for two great cancer charities… both very closely associated with rock opera kings The Who. We’re talking about Teen Cancer America and the Teenage Cancer Trust in the UK.

So check out this podcast to learn more about this big, dumb idea that became a brilliant reality, and some of the people who helped make it possible.

To learn more specifics on the rock opera and its fundraising component, visit: https://www.episode18.com

It's simple, really: the music is free, but make a donation to either charity and you're entitled (if you want) to digital downloads, a printed booklet of liner notes, and a lyric/story script. Rudy's not looking to fill your life with clutter... just to get you to take a listen to his music, and for you to share some love with teens going through cancer.

All music is available on most music streaming apps and YouTube. Just search for “Episode 18” by That Cancer Life.

Get to know your new music-obsessed friends in Rudy Fischmann's fascinating podcast-within-a-podcast, The Discograffiti Soldiers Of Sound Podcast, created exclusively by & for Discograffiti's Patreon "Soldiers of Sound" community, where you get to be the guest!

Part 13 covers the first two releases by a brand new Love—Four Sail & Out Here—which features a wild, powerhouse performance style that couldn’t possibly be more different from what had preceded it.

Here are just a few of the many things that Joe discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • How Arthur found the musicians that would populate the second iteration of Love;
  • The massive stylistic differences with which the new Love boldly led;
  • The wild drug habits of the new crop of guys;
  • Insane stories about Arthur’s dog from that era, which was named Self;
  • The very unique recording situation that begat both records;
  • The track selection process that was agreed upon by Elektra’s Jac Holzman and Blue Thumb’s Bob Krasnow;
  • The details behind the abjectly disastrous one-off reunion of the original Love for one final live performance;
  • And an in-depth, track-by-track deep dive on every song off Four Sail & Out Here.

(...with the implied agreement that, in return, you’ll subscribe to our Patreon to hear all the rest of the series!)

Going in to this interview, I was under the impression that this might be the only time I’d ever get with Jack. However, after he experienced the legendary “Discograffiti effect,” Jack generously afforded me carte blanche to talk at great length about each of the Airplane’s records. Part 1 is the first part of my first interview with Jack, in which we cover his life story all the way up to the Summer of Love, just as Jefferson Airplane started making their third LP, After Bathing At Baxter’s.

Here are just a few of the many things that Jack discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • The foundational, near-death experience with which he dealt as a child;
  • His holy sh*t moment of creative epiphany;
  • His first band—also featuring Jorma Kaukonen—which the two best friends formed back in 1958;
  • Who almost got the bass gig in the Airplane before it was proposed to Jack;
  • The early gigs and the making of the band’s debut record;
  • The profound growth the band experienced between the debut and Surrealistic Pillow;
  • Jack’s frank thoughts on free love;
  • And the very beginning of the Baxter’s lunacy.

  • Regrets over drug abuse;
  • Johnny’s upcoming plans with Love;
  • Johnny’s modest outlook on Love’s legacy;
  • And a story about Jac Holzman at the very end that will be seared into my brain for the rest of time immemorial.

Here are just a few of the many things that Joe discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • Arthur’s unsuccessful attempt to eject Bryan MacLean from the band;
  • The fate of Bryan MacLean’s solo album for Elektra;
  • Love’s 1968 New York jaunt, which was plagued with a panoply of problems;
  • The death of their road manager, which Arthur later documented in “Your Friend & Mine - Neil’s Song” on Love’s next record, Four Sail;
  • What happened with Johnny Echols, Bryan MacLean, Snoopy Pfisterer, Michael Stuart-Ware, and Ken Forssi;
  • And finally, the tragic life, and death, of Don Conka.

Part 10 is the fifth part of my interview with Johnny, which covers the material he’d conceived to contribute to Forever Changes, Love’s final single, and the chaotic final days of the band.

Here are just a few of the many things that Johnny discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • The classic final 1968 single that Love made before breaking up;
  • The tracks that Johnny had written and conceived to be part of Forever Changes back in 1967;
  • A brutally honest and raw look back at Johnny’s days using heroin while the band was imploding;
  • How Johnny got off drugs once and for all;
  • The little-known one-time live reunion of Love that came to a swift end;
  • Johnny’s relationship with Miles Davis in the early 1970s, not to mention the possibility that he was an uncredited inspiration behind one of Miles’ seminal records from that time;
  • And some hard truths about the end of Don Conka’s life.

Part 8 is the fourth part of my interview with Johnny, which covers the same time period as Episode 7, but in more granular detail, and heard directly from the man who lived it. Part 8 covers Love’s Forever Changes: the machinations behind the scenes, the making of the record, and all the classic music on it.

Here are just a few of the many things that Johnny discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • Why Arthur thought he was going to die after making Love’s third record;
  • Arthur’s relationship with cocaine at that time;
  • The secret that Arthur kept from the band members during the making of the album;
  • Whether Neil Young had any production involvement, as legend has had it;
  • Johnny’s thoughts on orchestrator David Angel’s contribution to the LP;
  • His true thoughts about turning down Monterey Pop;
  • What Johnny thinks is his best ever moment on record;
  • Finally, that “All of God’s children gotta have their freedom” piece at the end of “The Red Telephone” is explained!;
  • And an in-depth, track-by-track deep dive with Johnny on Forever Changes, plus his own star rating for the record!

LOVE PART 7: THE FULL STORY BEHIND FOREVER CHANGES (7 & 7 & 7 IS: THE DEFINITIVE 21-EPISODE STORY OF ARTHUR LEE & LOVE SERIES) (Ep. 254)10 Apr 202600:18:46

Love Part 1 on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/3B3FEgFZ58gJOZqSSmaiGG?si=5LuYUXfVRYy2NRE30AszCQ

Part 7 covers Love’s third record, the undisputed masterpiece Forever Changes, which only a fool would argue is not the towering peak of their career: here, then, is the record’s background story, and the making of it. It is often referred to as the greatest album of all time, especially in the U.K., where in 2002 members of Parliament signed a motion declaring Love’s 1967 release "the greatest album of all time".

Here are just a few of the many things that Joe discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • How drugs factored into things during that time, and which drugs they were;
  • What separated the orchestrations intended for this record from the strings on all other rock records up to this point;
  • The misunderstood notions about who is playing what and the band members’ involvement in the process of creating the songs;
  • Whether or not Forever Changes was intended at the outset to be a double album;
  • Just how things got off on the wrong foot on the first day of sessions;
  • The extent of The Wrecking Crew’s involvement in playing on the record;
  • Why exactly they turned down Monterey;
  • The man responsible for sequencing the album, as well as the one song he cut from the track list;
  • And the background story which begat its classic title.

THE FULL STORY BEHIND THE CALIFORNIA RAISINS (OR, THE REDEMPTION TALE OF BUDDY MILES FROM THE ELECTRIC FLAG & BAND OF GYPSYS) (Ep. 253)01 Apr 202600:18:57

Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. April Fools! You may think the joke here is that we’ve made an episode on the California Raisins backstory, but in fact…the joke is that you think this episode is a joke. This touching expose of the raisin industry is actually a disguised Discograffiti episode about the career trajectory of the great Buddy Miles (Electric Flag, Buddy Miles Express, Band Of Gypsys). Host Dave Gebroe teams with OG Discograffiti host Joe Kennedy, and together they create a whoopee-cushioned joy buzzer of an April Fools’ gag that succeeds on every level imaginable.

Here are just a few of the many things that Joe discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • The issues within the raisin industry which provoked the creation of the California Raisins;
  • The father of Claymation, who lent his talents to bringing these shriveled, anthropomorphized snacks to life;
  • A full career overview of Buddy Miles;
  • The crazed extent of the merchandising involved with this phenomenon;
  • The mysterious, off-label fourth California Raisins record;
  • And a not-very-in-depth, extremely shallow dive on The California Raisins discography!

Part 6 is the third part of my interview with Johnny, which covers the same time period as Episode 5, but in more granular detail, and heard directly from the man who lived it. Part 6 covers Love’s Da Capo: the machinations behind the scenes, the making of the record, and all the classic music on it.

Here are just a few of the many things that Johnny discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • How Love shifted from being jazz fans to entering into jazz territory as a band;
  • The background of the sly coda of “7 & 7 Is”;
  • How The Rolling Stones “borrowed” from Love at least twice;
  • The kind of imprint Paul Rothchild’s production made on their sophomore record;
  • How Johnny counters the myths that proliferate around this band;
  • And an in-depth, track-by-track deep dive with Johnny on Da Capo, plus his own star rating for the record!

Part 5 covers Love’s sophomore LP Da Capo: the background story, the making of the record, and a song-by-song overview. An argument can be made that the growth displayed in the gap between record one and two is the most mind-boggling quantum leap in music history.

Here are just a few of the many things that Joe discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

  • The making of the “7 & 7 Is” single, who it was written about, and how it changed sonically from its original conception;
  • How The Doors absolutely idolized Love, but why Arthur helping them get a deal with Elektra wound up biting his band in the ass;
  • The initial conception of their second LP, before things veered off into a whole other terrain;
  • The great lost Arthur Lee classic that he gave away to a rival group;
  • The formation of the briefly-lived septet iteration of Love;
  • The female wedge that drove herself between Arthur Lee and Bryan MacLean;
  • An examination of the largest qualitative Side 1 / Side 2 disparity in music history;
  • And an in-depth, track-by-track deep dive on every song off Da Capo.
