The Wrecking Crew is to the Sixties what The Immediate Family are to the Seventies, so it’s no accident that music doc director extraordinaire Denny Tedesco tackled both groups of studio musicians in equally fascinating documentaries.  While we’re on the topic of Graham Nash, The Immediate Family became Crosby & Nash’s touring ensemble, nicknamed The Mighty Jitters on the road for reasons we won’t go into here.

The next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series is Part 1 of Chuck’s chat with Brian Wilson’s favorite drummer, legendary studio maestro Hal Blaine. It’s not hard to understand why Brian worked with him so often: Hal claimed to have participated in over 35,000 sessions and 6,000 singles. His drumming is featured on 150 US top 10 hits, 40 of which went to number one. Chuck’s interview with Hal took place while the latter was living in a retirement community, and the tone is definitely “no shits given” by this point. Hal passed away a few years later in 2019, which makes this posthumously released “Chuck Chat” yet another priceless buried treasure.

Who better to tackle Discograffiti’s epic, multi-episode Deep-Dive into The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds—my second favorite album of all time behind only Smile—than the scholarly yet super-cool Petsoundsologist Chuck Granata, whose book Wouldn’t It Be Nice: Brian Wilson And The Making Of The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds is the ultimate piece of work on the LP?  Chuck and I dived so deep we actually had to seek treatment for the bends, but as you’ll hear it was worth every second.  Episode 1 is the story of the record from soup to nuts, without an examination of its specific songs…which is coming in episodes 2 through 6.

We kick off the Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series at the very beginning…it’s Chuck’s conversation with one of Brian Wilson’s most towering influences, Ross Barbour of The Four Freshmen!  His father Murry took Brian to see the legendary harmony group when he was 14, and he got the opportunity to meet them. The concert and that meeting had a profound effect on young Brian, who said, “My voice was shivering as I was talking to them…I was so in awe of them. It was one of the biggest moments in my life. [Their song] ‘It’s a Blue World’ made me cry. I learned to make four-part harmonies from the Four Freshmen.” Russ passed away back in 2011, which makes this posthumously released interview a particularly priceless buried treasure.

Recorded only two days before the great man’s passing, this audiobook-style episode is a Brian Wilson diary that covers the 27 sessions it took to accomplish one of his great works, a span of six months that kicks off at the moment in December 1965 when he first heard The Beatles’ Rubber Soul and vowed to make the greatest rock record of all time, to Pet Sounds’ release in May 1966. I’m joined by the world’s foremost Petsoundsologist Chuck Granata, author of the incredible book Wouldn’t It Be Nice: Brian Wilson And The Making Of The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds. This episode features a critical cameo by the great Fred Vail.

Here’s just a few of the many things that Chuck discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

• The Pickwick Bookstore acid flashback that inadvertently provided the initial inspiration for Pet Sounds;
• The unlikely figure who first introduced Van Dyke Parks to Brian Wilson;
• The only song on the record that features The Beach Boys playing instruments;
• The record company’s real motivation for releasing “Sloop John B” as a single;
• How Brian countered record company disinterest in a classic meeting held at Capital HQ;
• The importance of Bruce Johnston’s UK Pet Sounds unveiling;
• And a beautiful cameo by Fred Vail describing the atmosphere at the mastering session, which was only attended by Fred and Brian’s wife Marilyn.
