The Surreal World (with Lee-Sean Huang) [rerun]22 Aug 202400:55:48

THREE big pieces of news!

#1: Season 5 is coming on Thursday, September 5! Now is a great time to get subscribed and ready—we've got a killer roster already lined up and you won't want to miss it!

#2: If you weren't able to get out to our Seattle live show as part of Seattle Design Festival, not to worry! SDF has published a video of the whole show to their YouTube channel that you can watch, either on its own or paired with the other SDF Day 1 Mainstage presentations. It was so wonderful to get to connect with Seattle's design community and to share a stage with the great Terry Marks! Big thanks to the entire team at SDF for making the show happen!

#3: There is still more summer news yet to be revealed, and as soon as I can do it, I plan to publish the announcement to the folks who read our newsletter first, so if you're not already signed up, what are you waiting for? Christmas? That's a long time away and you will know what the announcement is well in advance of December 25, unless you are very, very inattentive. Don't wait—subscribe to the newsletter and let it be your Christmas miracle!

This week in the feed as our final rerun of summer: those tossed salads and scrambled eggs must have been calling again back at the midpoint of season 2, because Did I Do That? was in Seattle for the AIGA Design Conference 2022! Lee-Sean Huang (Creative Director of Foossa and Director of Design Content & Learning at AIGA) joins Sean to talk dialup conspiracies, leveraging the combined might of the Center for Academic Precocity and the Cronkite School of Journalism to make a reality show, and what business people think about.

You can find more about Lee-Sean at his website, leesean.net, or follow him nearly anywhere social by searching for the handle @leesean. You can learn more about Foossa’s work in service design, futurecasting, and more at foossa.com. You can find the Lee-Sean's podcasting work with the AIGA on their site, or by searching for "AIGA Design Podcast" wherever you prefer your pod-based experiences are found; AIGA recently has been expanding their podcast and exploring the theme of "Margins" and it's been really great to listen to—go check it out!

This episode was recorded at the 2022 AIGA Design Conference in Seattle, Washington on Saturday, October 22, 2022 and originally published on Thursday, November 17, 2022 as part of season 2.

Quivering Filthy Jamboree (with Dan Rhatigan) [rerun]08 Aug 202401:07:33

Summertime fun-time rerun-time continues, but before it does, some big news: I'm doing a live Did I Do That? in Seattle for Seattle Design Festival on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 4:15pm in Lake Union Park! I'll be joined on stage by the incredible Terry Marks!

Terry Marks is an award-winning designer with laurels from the likes of HOW, Print, Communication Arts, Neenah, Potlatch and more. He had judged a number of national and local design competitions and is a published author, twice for Rockport Publishers and yet his favorite might be Mr. Crumbly Dreams a Tiger for O’Neil Printing + Rule29. Terry is a champion of collaboration, fan of the kind and good, Fellow of AIGA Seattle, and veteran of the Executive Board of the AIGA National Board of Directors.

I hope you can make it out to the live show—it's going to be really special to bring this silly podcast to the SDF mainstage and bring it to friends new and old out in Seattle!

This week in the feed, though: To close out 2022, we called in The Fixer! “Logotype surgeon” and type designer Dan Rhatigan (Director of Type Products at Type Network) sits down with Sean to talk about failing successfully, gifts from fast food heaven, and not quite getting to act with Gwyneth Paltrow in a high school musical.

You can find Dan’s work all over the internet—his blog is at ultrasparky.org, and he can be found @ultrasparky on Twitter and @bijoutype on Instagram. Speaking of the latter, his foundry Bijou Type (bijoutype.com) should be up an d running soon with an update of Dan’s beautiful graduate school typeface project you can add to your own type collection. His fantastic Pink Mince zine series can be found and purchased at pinkmince.com and @pinkmince on Twitter.

This episode was recorded Tuesday, December 20, 2022 in Portland, Oregon and originally published right at the start of 2023. Were we ever so young?

That Ain’t It, Folks (with Rachel Frankel)04 Apr 202401:12:06

Throw away your phones and pick up your oil paints! Rachel Frankel (Senior Brand Designer at Zendesk) joins Sean to talk portfolio lust, Apple allergies, and the weirdest social network’s weirdest pivot yet (and it’s only partially to video).

You can find Rachel’s work all over the ‘net (and IRL):

All Angles (with Kim Sutherland)21 Mar 202401:10:09

OMFGCO Creative Director and author/designer of Rural Kimberly Sutherland joins Sean to talk the horrifying truth about figs, the top ten signs you’re in romcom, and the crowning of Portland’s #1 (vegan) ice cream boi. Why not grab a Gatorade and join the fuuuuuuuuuuuuun!

You can find Kimberly’s work all over the ‘net (and IRL):

  • You can find more of Kim’s work—both design and art related—on her website, kimberly-sutherland.com!
  • The OMFGCO Journal, which Kim co-writes with Fritz Mesenbrink, is the best place to go to learn the latest from the studio, and is where you can go first to hear about when the And Then What?! podcast drops. Along with their Journal articles, you can also find audio versions which might be considered soft pilots for the show all on their own! Keep your eyes (and ears) peeled for it and their upcoming merch!
  • If you’re planning on attending Creative Works West 2024 in Seattle at the end of April, Kim will be hosting a workshop on Brand Concepts & Frameworks alongside OMFGCO’s Fritz on Saturday, April 27 at 9am! If you’re interested, hop on over to the Creative Works site to learn more or their Eventbrite to register! As of this writing, tickets are still available!

Addendum: Since I’ve come to record this episode, I’ve learned that there are in fact some varieties of figs that do not require wasps to pollinate them. Still, the truth that most figs pretty much consume wasps in order to become figs is undeniably A PROBLEM that we must reckon with as a species if we are going to continue to live on this planet.

Hot Dogs and PB&J (with Matt Graff)07 Mar 202401:19:54

Get those offer codes ready! Creative Director Matt Graff joins Sean to talk Pee-Chee folder portfolios, unusual interview questions, and the six quadrants of action sports marketing.

You can find Matt’s work on his website, mattgraff.com. He’s currently looking for his next Creative Direction role, so if your studio is looking for someone, reach out! Matt can also be found on LinkedIn at inkedin.com/in/mattgraff.

Feed Drop: Two Designers Walk Into a Bar08 Feb 202400:29:29

To close out our season break, I wanted to share one last feed drop! The creators of Two Designers Walk Into A Bar reached out a few weeks back to connect as fellow creators of media about design that doesn't take design too seriously. They make a really fun show, and this episode comes from the end of their third season covering a subject my students have heard me talk about many times: one of the most financially catastrophic packaging redesigns in history. It's a really wonderful show—give it a listen and then give them a follow! You can find them on whatever podcasting platform you like, as well as Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, X, and LinkedIn!

Two Designers Walk Into a Bar, Episode 50: The Pepsi (Logo) Challenge

Pepsi announced it’s moving forward by moving backwards (sort of), returning to more of a traditional look for their logo and cans. (Think black. It's a slimming color.) But as they kick their last logo to the curb, we go back in time to discuss how they became saddled with this burdensome brand look in the first place. We talk ovals, smiles, globes, magnetic fields and cosmic forces of the universe in this special breathtaking and scientifically-tangential episode.

Images, articles and links mentioned in this episode can be found on their episode page: https://www.twodesignerswalkintoabar.com/episodes/episode-50-pepsi-logo-story

This episode was originally published June 7, 2023.

General Podcast Info:

Two Designers Walk Into a Bar is a podcast about iconic design and popular culture.

Hosted by graphic designers and collectors Todd Coats and Elliot Strunk, the podcast is constantly looking at pop culture and thinking about how it influences us and what we do for a living. Starting with a theme, we choose iconic work that we find meaningful and use humor and insight to break it down, turn it inside out and try to understand why it has stood the test of time.

Two Designers Walk Into a Bar encourages listeners to dive into their libraries, mini storage units or memories with us.

Fontroversy #2: "Comic Sans: From Their Hate Came Love (And Money)"28 Dec 202300:30:23

Graphic design may be our passion, but everybody needs a break too! While Did I Do That? is off for a few weeks between seasons, enjoy a few episodes of our sister podcast Fontroversy, produced by one of Sean's classes in Spring 2023. If you missed episode 1, no worries—unlike the glut of superhero cinematic universe movies out there, there's nothing there you need to know to enjoy to this one! If you want to revisit it, though, you can find it here!

When a typeface ripped from the funny pages starts to get contentious, surprise guest expert Whitney McPhie (currently serving as Interim Creative Director at Willamette Week) intervenes to school Lena and Sean on what Comic Sans can really do.

IMPORTANT EDITORIAL CORRECTION: Gentle Giants Dog Food does NOT, in fact, use Comic Sans on its packaging—it instead uses a DaFont-style Disney-inspired sans paired with, of all things, Bank Gothic Sean apologies for this truly shameful oversight, although in their defense, attempting to look at any one specific type block on the package without being immediately distracted is basically impossible.

Making Mistakes Confessional14 Dec 202300:57:21

As both Season 3 and 2023 draw to a close, the time to seek forgiveness is at hand! Earlier this year, Did I Do That? set up a confessional booth—with Sean playing the role as part priest, part Frasier Crane—to collect true stories of design disasters, missteps, failures, and more from anonymous guests who sought to clear their guilty consciences.

How can you find peace when faced with cross crossworders, ghost(ed) cookbooks, and duck pornography? There’s only one way to find out!

(To be clear: the way is listening; you must listen to find out.)

WANT A DESIGN CONFESSIONAL AT YOUR EVENT?

If you have a live event and want me to set up another design confessional for it, either in Portland or beyond, let’s talk! I’d love to do more events like this in the future.

SPECIAL THANKS

The clips used in this episode were collected as part of “Future Fonts and Friends,” a party held for TypeCon 2023 at Outlet in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, August 17, 2023. All guests were indeed anonymous, and so if you hear any familiar voices, I guess just ignore that? Come to think of it, what do real priests do about that problem?!

Huge thanks to past guest Lizy Gershenzhon and Travis Kochel of Future Fonts for inviting me to be a part of the event, to the organizers of TypeCon for putting up with me, and to my 2023 MVP Orion Cortez for building the confessional booths based solely on two terrible sketches I made.

Additional thanks to past guest Kate Bingaman-Burt of Outlet for her eternal support of / patience with me just in general, but especially the white-hot ball of stress that is me when faced with a live event. Thanks, too, to the kind folks at Jolby—who didn’t even have anything to do with the party and had no reason to help me!—for letting me steal power from them for a couple of hours just because I happened to set up next to their studio.

YOU’VE MADE IT THIS FAR…

I want to all of you listeners out there for keeping this show going and growing. This marks the end of both our third season and second year, and I don’t think I ever would have imagined there would be as many folks out there following it as there are around the world. If you’ve enjoyed the first two years of this show, please tell a friend! I want to keep this project growing, and the community around it growing as well.

  • If you have some nice things to say about what this project means to you, please send me an email! If you have mean things to say about me, please relay them to your dentist while they have their hands in your mouth—they’ll understand and relay them directly back to me, I’m sure.
  • I don’t ordinarily plug the tip jar, but if you have some change between your couch cushions you want to throw my way, I would really appreciate it.

Design Triscuit (with Zachary Winterton)30 Nov 202301:04:31

Creative Director and Design TikToker Zachary Winterton joins Sean to talk about the people in your (Geocities) neighborhood, bad leadership advice from cheerleaders, and Charlie the Cactus: the supermarket mascot of our dreams?

Zachary is probably best found these days on TikTok (tiktok.com/@zacharywinterton), Instagram (instagram.com/zacharywinterton), and YouTube (youtube.com/@ZacharyWinterton) where you can find his latest short form design-centric videos. You can sign up for The Creative Brief, Zachary’s weekly newsletter, on his website at zacharywinterton.com/newsletter. That same website, zacharywinterton.com, is where you can see some of his past work.

Sometimes The Moment Needs Extra Mayo (with Kyle Letendre) [Rerun]25 Jul 202400:58:07

Rerun summer continues with another past guest from way back in 2022—lettering designer extraordinaire and Portland flower fan Kyle Letendre joins Sean to talk Minnesota’s missing lakes, misguided entrepreneurial spirit, and rebrands that aren’t quite making the grade. We’re filling in the pixels in that JPEG manually in person while we get to the bottom of a question that’s been on everyone’s mind: what’s Sean’s favorite food color?

Kyle most recently did artwork for TypeCon 2024's identity, which you can see on the TypeCon website.

Not-so-coincidentally enough, the day this episode is re-released (Thursday, July 25, 2024) Fontroversy's Lena Hall and I will be appearing at TypeCon's Education Forum to present about the type education side of how Fontroversy came to be—it's going to be a real kick, and if you're going to be attending TypeCon, check out the EdForum schedule page on TypeCon's website for scheduling information. Stay tuned to the newsletter, too, Fontroversy friends, for more news on the show coming later this summer!

Also the night this episode comes out, I'll be at Future Fonts & Friends holding our second ever Making Mistakes Confessional! That event is free, open to the public, packed with friends of the show, and is your chance to share any design foibles that have been haunting you with our design therapist-in-residence. Future Fonts & Friends is happening at Outlet (2500 NE Sandy Blvd. in Portland) from 6–9pm. Hope to hear you there!

Stay tuned for more event news, including more information about our Seattle show, in the newsletter!

What Could Go Wrong? (with Emily Tate)16 Nov 202301:15:58

Emily Tate (Senior Digital Art Director for Studio A at Adidas) joins Sean to talk about America’s most frightening college mascot, disinterested dogs, and William Shatner's Pandora surprise.

You can find Emily’s work on her portfolio work, emilytatedesign.com. You can see more of her design work and giver her a follow on Instagram at instagram.com/emilytatedesign.  In addition to Adidas.com, you can also still see Emily’s work on the Burgerville small dip packages—go get some with your next burger!

This episode was recorded on Saturday, November 11, 2023. As I mention towards the end of this episode, this is our first recording in a new studio space, which does have some electrical interference, echo, and outside sound bleed issues long since solved in our other space. I’ve done my best to mitigate all of these in post-production, but apologies if you do pick up on any buzz, reverb, or street noise!

Me To A Freakin’ Tee (with Celestia Caredio)02 Nov 202301:00:07

Freelance designer, paper crafter extraordinaire, and former student Celestia Caredio joins Sean for a very special not-quite-Halloween-anymore episode to talk about The Haunting of Full House, bookbinding in a hostel, and jewel cases. Plus, is a tech startup possibly planning on sending Sean to the great beyond? There’s only one way to find out—to listen in! (well, okay, or you could just wait and see if it happens, but listening would be better for my stats)

  • You can find Celestia’s current site at celestiagrace.com, or very occasionally on social media at @celestiagrace on Instagram! If you’re looking for an excellent freelance senior designer who can throw a killer Halloween party, you can also connect with her on LinkedIn too at linkedin.com/in/celestia-caredio-06457439
  • Celestia did indeed turn her early mix CD design project “My Room” into a Spotify playlist, and was gracious enough to share it here: open.spotify.com/playlist/5G4vfVoBHx8m7PD051eVmq! It’s chock full of lesser known tracks from some of the coolest bands of the mid-to-late aughts, so give it a listen! Fair warning, though: as Celestia puts it, there is a lot of angst in this album.

This episode was recorded Saturday, October 21, 2023 in downtown Portland, Oregon, and marks the last episode in our dank and dark PSU Art Building studio! May it get to live out its final days in peace, being filled with random junk for events that we’ll forget we have until after the event we might need it for is over.

Spooky and Cheesy, But So Perfect (with Ashod Simonian)19 Oct 202301:28:22

Ashod Simonian (co-owner of Imaginary Authors perfume and co-author of both the “Portland Book of Dates” and the brand new “Seattle Book of Dates”) joins Sean to talk roadside attractions, band photo cliches, and the classic dilemma of adulthood: do I get a job at the IRS or work on Scooby Doo?

  • You can find more about Ashod on Instagram @ashod, or on his website, ashodsimonian.com!
  • The Portland Book of Dates is out just about everywhere you can find beautiful books, and has just recently been joined by The Seattle Book of Dates! Both are gorgeous—filled with tons of Ashod’s beautiful RISO-esque illustrations. You can order The Portland Book of Dates at Powell’s, Bookshop.org, Barnes & Noble, and many other fine retailers! The Seattle Book of Dates will drop November 14th, but you can pre-orderit at Powell’s, Bookshop.org, Barnes & Noble, and many others near you as well!
  • You can find more about Imaginary Authors, the beautifully packaged non-gendered perfume line Ashod co-owns and designs for, at imaginaryauthors.com. Ashod was kind enough to share a few samples with me and I can confirm that they smell fantastic and look really good on a shelf to boot!

Brandon Hrycyk (illustrator and host of XRAY FM’s “A Century of Slang”) joins Sean to talk about Beautiful Bean Bucket Hats, regionalisms, and the dangers of volunteering for an art project. It’s bizarre and beautiful and so much fun!

If you’re wanting that warm terrestrial radio experience, why not tune your FM dial to 107.1 or 91.1 in Portland, or 91.7 in Nehalem. Fontroversy #1: "Wingdings: Cheugy Emoji?"07 Sep 202300:46:16

Good news, everyone! We just hit 25,000 listens—which is even more impressive considering that it's been less than a year since we hit 5,000! To celebrate (and not at all to cover a production gap caused by my having to move), I'm sharing the first episode of the limited series spin-off I made with my DES 399 class last term, Fontroversy! It's a really hilarious way to get anyone at all excited about fonts with a great mix of silly stuff and true history, and should be perfect for anyone who likes what we do here.

Too, I'd love some feedback on what you might want out of a Did I Do That? Patreon could look like! If you have ideas or would just want to show your support, drop me a line at ss3@pdx.edu!

If you want to show your support for DIDT, tell a friend about the show, either in meatspace or on MySpace, or consider a one-time "Buy Me A Coffee" tip—It'd mean a lot!

Fontroversy #1: "Wingdings: Cheugy Emoji?"

Plastic Heaven (with Olivia Johnson)27 Jul 202300:56:09

See the sparks fly as digital designer and artist Olivia Johnson (Associate Design Director at Instrument) joins Sean to talk challenging Barbies, Neopets Black Friday, and what Elvis has been up to. Meanwhile, Sean and Nathan Fielder temporarily switch bodies, resulting in a layer of such dripping sarcasm that you won’t be able to tell what isn’t coated in it. Get some sleep folks, or you too might turn into Nathan Fielder (and who has time to graduate from one of Canada’s top business schools with really good grades?).

  • You can find Olivia’s work on the web at oj.co, or on Instagram @o_j.co. Olivia recently separated her handcrafted data viz work onto its own Instagram @handcharted.
  • If you want to learn how to make your own terxtile-based data visualizations, Olivia’s self-paced online course “Data Visualization with Alternative Mediums” is available for $40 (or, for the next few hours, the highly discounted price of $7.99!). Too, if textile work is new to you, the course also includes an introduction to cross-stitch! Give it a download!

You Seem Competent (with Andy McMillan)13 Jul 202301:21:16

Our fun, weird guest Andy McMillan of XOXO, Suckerpunch, and Heck Beer joins Sean for several different kinds of incredible niche podcasts all wrapped into one episode to talk about what’s next in tech, the parts of a balanced breakfast, and the terrible things you might find lurking in the forest. It’s the episode where unbridled enthusiasm meets lowered expectations!

  • Andy can be found these days at andymcmillan.com, or turning LinkedIn into the weird, wild place it was never meant to be at linkedin.com/in/goodonpaper. Give LinkedIn a chance, won’t you?
  • You can find more about Heck, Andy’s new non-alcoholic craft beer, at heck.beer. Sign up for their newsletter there to be notified when tasting pop-ups pop up!

Also, for real, if you send me a self-addressed stamped envelope, I will indeed send you back a self-addressed stamped envelope—I promise you no merch, signed glossy headshots, or anything else—just pure snail-mailed… delight? It's Gotta Be Moo (with Lizy Gershenzon) [Rerun]11 Jul 202401:00:08

Rerun summer continues! In this timely episode from way back in 2022, Future Fonts co-founder and all around rad person Lizy Gershenzon joined Sean to talk pieces of flair, the opposite of missed connections, and The Rainbow Passage. We’re going back to high school and making font magic in an episode that’s got milk—just not in an officially licensed form.

Since this episode came out way back in early 2022, Lizy and Travis have launched the Vectro Type Foundry, home of favorites like the acclaimed Chartwell, Kicker, and Whoa, but also home to new fantastic faces like the incredible Kablammo—check them out and give them a download! Lizy and Travis, along with fellow co-founder James Edmundson of Ohno Type Co., co-founded Future Fonts, where you can get experimental typefaces while they're still in development and help support their creators through the process! It's one of the best places to find new and emerging type, and a great place to start for someone who's new to type and wanting to find out how fun it can be first hand. Check them out at futurefonts.xyz, or at the Future Fonts and Friends event!

I Wanna See A Weird Hat (with Mallary Wilson)29 Jun 202301:21:31

Freelance designer, grad student, and fellow Portland Institute for Contemporary Art design alum Mallary Wilson joins Sean to talk inadvertently inappropriate imagery, erasers shaped like food items, and hoarding AOL hours. It’s an episode that’s unforgivably uncool, but we can dig it!

  • You can find Mallary on the web at mallarydesigns.com or @mallarydesigns on Instagram—if you work at an agency and are looking for somebody killer to bring onto your team, reach out!
  • If you’re wondering what the heck we’re talking about with regards to PICA and TBA and all, that, check out PICA.org—those around Portland may know them for their annual Time-Based Art (TBA) Festival, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. It is a weird, good time, and brings parts of the artistic globe to Portland you might never see otherwise.

Not Quite A Number (with Elliott Snyder)01 Jun 202301:03:08

Let’s all have a good time! Did I Do That? is back for season 3! Elliott Snyder of Old Friend joins Sean to talk unique approaches to #vanlife, Portland’s always pleasant winter weather, and what ChatGPT thinks wine bars are for. You’ll find your spot, it’s all we’ve got!

  • You can find Elliott and Jesse’s often hospitality-oriented branding studio Old Friend at their website, oldfriend.co, or on Instagram @oldfriend!
  • Speaking of hospitality, Elliott and Jesse’s wine bar Company is going strong! If you’re in Portland, you can pop by at 916 SE 34th Avenue (just off Belmont across from Stumptown), or check them out on the web at companypdx.com or on Instagram @companypdx. They even have a unique wine club subscription service to help you look like a wine expert to your friends (just don’t go too deep on it or you may have to move to Seattle, where you’ll host a bizarrely successful and high paying call-in psychiatry show on local terrestrial radio—worse still, you will unfortunately have to also live with your dad and his ABSOLUTELY VILE old chair, which totally ruins the aesthetics of your vaguely post-modern mission-style high rise apartment. Who can enjoy their ‘92 Pouilly-Fuissé with that eyesore in the room! And don’t even get me started about how your nearly-identical brother will be constantly flirting with your dad’s live-in nurse! Talk about a bunch of scrambled eggs all over your face! So, basically, be careful learning about wine).
  • You can find Elliott’s own Instagram, including the aforementioned farm content, @elliottsnyder.

Feed Drop: AIGA Design Podcasts, "The Black Experience in Design: Identity, Expression, and Reflection"04 May 202300:44:11

Spring break nears its end (just in time for spring in Portland to actually begin), but not without a feed drop from our friends at AIGA! This special episode of the AIGA Design Podcasts feed features past guest and Director of Design Content & Learning at AIGA Lee-Sean Huang in conversation with the incredible Anne H. Berry, Jennifer Rittner, and Kelly Walters about their book The Black Experience in Design: Identity, Expression & Reflection as part of the the 2022 AIGA Design Conference in Seattle.

The Black Experience in Design is an anthology centering a range of perspectives, spotlights teaching practices, research, stories, and conversations from a Black/African diasporic lens. Through the voices represented, this text exemplifies the inherently collaborative and multidisciplinary nature of design, providing access to ideas and topics for a variety of audiences, meeting people as they are and wherever they are in their knowledge about design. This panel, featuring some of the book's editors, reflects on the process of publishing the book, and highlights some of the themes contained within the perspectives and stories within.

The panel is fantastic, and I'd highly recommend picking up a copy of the book from the Black Experience in Design website, directly from Skyhorse Publishing, or wherever you find books!

Special thanks to AIGA and Lee-Sean Huang for this feed drop—go check out and subscribe to the AIGA Design Podcasts feed, and go check out some what'll be happening as part of the 2023 AIGA Design Conference to be held in NEW YORK CITY?!

If you're listening to this on the day it comes out and you're in the Portland metro area, please come pay my students a visit at Be Honest, our humongous student portfolio showcase event at Wieden+Kennedy! It'll be a good time!
