16 Mar 2021

My guest today is David Hoang, who in my opinion has one of the best Design Twitter accounts. I've been following him for some time and have learned a ton about design leadership in the process. To be able to have him on the podcast today is an absolute pleasure, and you're going to love it.
I've mentioned that the Designed Today podcast is changing, and in today's intro, I'll finally give you some details on what that change is going to look like. In short, things evolve. This podcast needs to evolve just like your career is evolving.
What does your career evolution look like? Well, you may be nearing an opportunity or crossroads of leadership and management. Does your company provide tracks for both individual contributors and managers? What are the responsibilities that come with each? And how do you know what track is right for you?
Today we'll dive into what you need to consider before transitioning from and IC to Manager.

The new year is off to the races. Like many of you, I've got my fingers crossed for a better year than the last. I recognize however that to make the year better, I've got to do my part. Make your own luck.
My encouragement to you today is this... If you're not a "resolution" kind of person, join me (a fellow non-resolution person) in breaking that mold this year. Isolate and identify those things in your life that are bringing you happiness, and chase after more of it. Identify what you want to accomplish this year, and make plans to achieve it.
Designed Today has some fun things planned for the new year, and I'm excited to continue to introduce you to new guests

Where've I been? I took the summer off. The better question is why. Maintaining balance has always been a struggle, this summer I tried to figure it out and I think it was a success.
Maintaining Creativity // Ep. 8
26 Jun 2018
00:29:44
This episode has been a long time coming! A couple months back I was scrolling through my Instagram feed and came across some pretty cool things that popped out at me. They all happened to be designed by my friend Marnie Weintz.
Go Get ‘Em // Rant 3
05 Jun 2018
00:09:51
Today's rant is less of a rant and more of a positive vibe being sent in the direction of the many UX candidates who I've had the opportunity to know over the last month or so.
Whose design is it anyway // Ep. 7
14 May 2018
00:53:26
I had such a blast with this opportunity to speak at Product Hive. Utah has such an amazing design community that you can join at no cost. This presentation got really technical, but for those who can speak mobile app design, you'll be able to get some insights and tips about learning when to go custom or native in your app design/build.
Deploy Empathy // Rant 2
01 May 2018
00:04:54
Over the last couple weeks, I've discovered a concept that I've finally been able to put into words. This is something I feel I lacked as a new designer who was coming from the business world where the books either balanced or they didn't. There was always a right answer and a wrong answer. For the most part, things were always black and white.
Beautifully Simple Apps // Ep. 6
24 Apr 2018
00:44:03
Back on the show is my friend Jacob Jorgenson, a designer turned iOS developer. We got on a subject today we are both passionate about which is app simplicity.
Less Micromanaging, More Creativity // Rant 1
04 Apr 2018
00:02:26
Today I've got a little rant for you. Something I hear quite often is how "micromanaged" designers feel. It's something I dealt with early in my career. I've got a few suggestions for you to get past it.
A Unique Breed // Ep. 5
28 Mar 2018
00:31:34
What an amazing opportunity it was to be invited to speak on campus as an Alumni at BYU-Idaho.
Utah Warriors Rugby Branding // Ep. 4

00:32:27
Utah is getting a professional Rugby team and my guest today, Billy Racule, has had the special opportunity to design for the new organization.

Torrey Podmajersky is the author of the best seller Strategic Writing for UX, one of the original UX writing books published by Oreilly, and holds a 4.7 out of 5 stars on Amazon. Additionally, Torrey works as a UX writer for Google and was kind enough to share her time with us today.
In this episode, we talk about how every UX designer can become a better UX writer with some basic insights to help frame it up right in your mind. We also talk about typical problems that designers tend to struggle with when they write, and how to overcome them.

This is week 3 of the Soft-Skills mini-series, and we are starting off where both Uncle Mikey and I struggled in the self-assessment challenge from last week. The category of struggle was collaborating in groups, which in and of itself is a huge category of topics. We narrowed in on articulating your design choices and taking your stakeholders along on the journey of your design process.
This week's challenge is to record yourself presenting. It can either be in an actual meeting in which you're presenting or record yourself as your prepare to present for your next meeting. Either way, the hope is that you'll come out of it capable of taking a few notes in where you can improve on your presentation skills.
Over the next few weeks, listen along and ask yourself the hard questions. Figure out where it is you can make improvements. I bet we will talk about it. At the end of each episode, we will leave you with a challenge. Our hope is that after taking the challenge, you can report back on what you learned or experience. Feel free to drop us a line and share your story. Messages can be received on LinkedIn or Instagram, or via DM on the Designed Today slack channel. We hope to hear from ya.

My guest today has made a huge splash in the freelance design world after. After his appearance on the Young Guns show hosted by Chris Do of The Futur, Connor was off to the races designing logos for businesses of all types. But to get himself to that point he had to be prepared. In his own words, learn what worked and what didn't work for Connor as he jumped both feet into the freelance career.

Soft-Skills: So You Think You've Got It All (Week 2) // Ep. 96
03 Nov 2020
00:35:00
If you're joining us for week 2 of our mini-series on Soft-Skills, we're going to assume you no longer need to be convinced of the importance of these skills in the workplace. I will take this opportunity however to note that, none of this will matter if you can't honestly assess where you stand when it comes to these skills. All of this will be time wasted if you're not earnestly invested in improving your soft-skills.
This stage is going to sting a little bit. If you're doing it right, then you're going to have to face some truths you've either willfully ignored or become blatantly oblivious to.
Our challenge to you this week is to take the self-assessment via the link below and reflect on those results. We'll be back in 2 weeks with part 3.
Over the next few weeks, listen along and ask yourself the hard questions. Figure out where it is you can make improvements. I bet we will talk about it. 27 Oct 2020
00:56:17
Laura Silva is the VP of Accessible UX Design at Bank of America and shares with us what a day in her life looks like. Her background wasn't always rooted in accessibility, but after a few life events, she felt inclined to help those who are often forgotten.
In this episode, you'll learn how you can look out for those with different accessibility needs, whether they be physical or mental, temporal or permanent.
We also get to answer a few questions that come in from the audience, which contributed to a great episode.

I've got some special for you... Today's introduction is the start of a new mini-series in which my good friend Michael Curtis will be joining me to talk about Soft Skills, and how you can strengthen your own.
Over the last few years, I've found Uncle Mikey and I expressing similar thoughts on the topic. It's one of the reasons that we became friends in the first place. Over the last couple years, you've heard me share some thoughts here and there about these soft skills, also known as 'interpersonal skills', or umbrellaed under the term 'Emotional Intelligence'. Today marks the start of series which we hope will help bring you greater awareness into your own soft skills, and how to improve in the area that needs improvement. After all, studies have shown that only 15% of your workplace success can be contributed to your hard-skills, therefore 85% of what will bring you success in your career can't be found in your classroom curriculum.
Over the next few weeks, listen along and ask yourself the hard questions. Figure out where it is you can make improvements. I bet we will talk about it. At the end of each episode, we will leave you with a challenge. Our hope is that after taking the challenge, you can report back on what you learned or experience. It's the grand finale of our Soft-Skills mini-series! These last 7 episodes with Uncle Mikey have been a blast and I've learned a ton. Today is no exception. In our last episode, we dig one of the top UX Buzzwords... Empathy. What is it? Do you need it? How can you get it? All in today's episode.

Your Unique Journey Into UX (w/ @UXGoodies Ioana Teleanu) // Ep. 91
29 Sep 2020
00:40:55
It wasn't too long ago that people were born and their parents knew from Day 1 what they were going to grow up to be. For some it was a Doctor, for others it was a lawyer. Some people were going to take over the family grocery store. But if you start asking around, I could almost guarantee nobody today was born and raised to be a UX Designer.
This would then mean that a career in UX wasn't planned, and we stumbled into the field from some other discipline. For me, a career in UX Design wasn't discovered until a few years after receiving my bachelor's degree in Business Marketing.
My guest today is Ioana Teleanue, she is the face behind the extremely popular and insightful Instagram account @UXGoodies. With over 200k followers, she is continually sharing tips and advice for those getting into the field of UX.
Today we discuss first how your unique background before getting into UX can be a benefit to you, and second, we delve into some of the advice she's given to designers who are stuck in their early career not knowing the next move.

In 2020, it's still unlikely to come across UX positions that still don't require a bit of UI work. However, unless you came from a visual design background, chances are you didn't spend much time learning UI while in your Bootcamp or online learning. This could ultimately hinder your hireability.
Give this episode a listen and take the challenge to improve your UI over the next couple of weeks.

The Power of Vulnerability (w/ Logo Designer James Martin) // Ep. 89
15 Sep 2020
00:44:19
Social media cultivates a world in which we feel pressured to live behind a facade of "everything's good" and "always sunshine over here" - but the truth of the matter is nobody is actually living that way, so why do we pretend?
When quarantine hit, and everyone found themselves working from home, I began to see a natural evolution to get a glimpse of what happens "behind the scenes". From kids walking into zoom meetings, to dirty laundry in the backgrounds, to cats walking across keyboards. And guess what, nobody cared. Fact, it almost resonated to be able to see your boss experiencing the same things you were facing.
Turns out, being real and vulnerable may actually resonate more with people than these facades we've created and hide behind.
My guest today is branding and logo design superstar, James Martin. Nobody has personified vulnerability and transparency on social media as this man has, and he'll be the first to tell you that his vulnerability has only yielded positive results. Whether you've got a massive following or no following at all, we can benefit from learning how to live with a little more vulnerability.

Case studies are already an incredibly tricky thing to figure out. Even once we get all the details locked in, it's easy to lack confidence when we see parts of the traditional UX process missing from a project.
If you're considering a small white lie to work in a survey which never actually happened, or if you want to showcase some other skills that just aren't as apparent in your case studies, let me put forth this idea I've been working on that I call "Micro Case Studies."

Many people struggle to find that balance between speaking up for your design decisions and coming off as too defensive. This balance between humble yet confident is a hard one to master. Fortunately, my guest today, Elize Todd, as figured out how to strike that balance and has learned the positive outcomes of speaking out.
This goes even further than just articulating or presenting your project. You should also consider (although scary) how to vocalize what you need from your company, peers, and other coworkers.

We are all going to have bad days. We're all going to have those days where we planned out our stretch goals, and when it comes time to act, we find excuses not to do it.
I've found that for me its important on those days to just show up. Show up for your job, your class, and the workshop you RSVP'd for. Show up for your friends and family. Taking a day off just makes it harder to get going again the next day.
What are you training your mind for? What have you conditioned your brain to do when you just don't want to take action? Do it anyway.

You might "like" Disney, but that's childsplay in comparison to my next guest. In this episode of Designed Today, my guest Adam Landefeld, the SVP of Product at Domo, shares insights he's learned from the original Disney Imagineers and how he's applied it to building software products.
Adam has been passionate about all things Disney from an early age. Studying what made Walt, Walt. Today he's been able to become friends with many of the remaining original Disney Imagineers. If you've not heard of an Imagineer before, these were the folks that Walt hired to help bring a bit of the Disney Magic Cinema to his highly anticipated theme park, Disneyland.

What a whirlwind of a week. I somehow went from extreme excitement on a project to a grinding halt after just one phone call. What happened that lead me to have to fire this client, I'll let you know in this week's storytime.
I share these stories not to put anybody on blast. You wouldn't know the people or companies I'm talking about because I'm trying to keep their anonymity. But there ARE lessons to be learned here, and those are most valuable.

Often times we think of our UX Deliverables as a checkbox or a level to pass. It's in those situations you need to remind yourself of why that checkbox exists. Understanding the value of our deliverables starts with knowing what the deliverables are, and the value they can bring to the table.
Ana Santos is passionate about these deliverables, and on today's episode, she's going to coach you through how to make the most of them. Specifically, we will take a look at our portfolio case studies, and understand the value of each step along the process.
Ana's background in UX Design is strong and includes a contract role with Google in her early career. Give this episode of Designed Today a listen and learn how you can strengthen your portfolio and case studies by understanding the value of your deliverables.

It's no secret that my feelings towards recruiters are… rough at best. Corporate recruiters have never done me any favors other than escorting me to an interview, which in truth, I could have done on my own. Agency recruiters are another ball of fun. They tend to be a sizable percentage of my LinkedIn connection requests, followed by a surface level conversation where I’m treated like a commodity.
Then this episode happened. I can’t say “it's all changed” but understanding is definitely improved. My guest today is Joe Taft, and talented UX Designer with over 5 years of industry experience. Currently, he’s a Senior UX Designer with USAA, but in a past life… he was a recruiter.
In this episode, Joe talks about the role of recruiters from both an agency and corporate perspective. We talk about how we can sift through the bad recruiters to find the good ones, the ones that will have your back, and actually help you land a position in the industry. My hope is that after this episode, if you’re between jobs, or looking to get your foot in the door, you’ll know how you can benefit from a relationship with a UX recruiter.

There are many reasons that today is the best day to begin your own freelance UX career. Many in my network were laid off at the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic and rehiring has been slow. Others are just unhappy with their job and have found it difficult to leave just yet. Whatever your reason, its not too soon to start the journey.
My guest today is the perfect guest to get you started. Michael Janda has an extensive background in design as a service including a successful agency with top clients like Fox and Disney. More recently he's turned Business and Design coach. His newest course "Freelance with Janda" is now available.
In today's episode, he takes us through some of the secrets to success in those first few months of your freelance career.

Are you avoiding the glaringly obvious issues of your product because of how familiar you've gotten with the glaring mistake? Maybe you're not even sure how to answer it because if it was still glaringly obvious, then you'd address it. Well, it's not that simple.
Stockholm Syndrome in the Design world is when we've become all too familiar with whatever hardship we've created in our product that we find workarounds for ourselves and call it finished. Your audience won't feel the same way.
Give todays episode a listen to assess if you've missed some dark corners in your projects that need to have some light shined on them again. Also, learn how you can avoid running into these situations altogether.

How To Successfully Demonstrate Your Ambition // Ep. 79
07 Jul 2020
00:46:15
Today you get to meet a friend and mentee of mine, Uliti Fangupo. I met him over two years ago when he was in the middle of a UX Bootcamp. He reached out trying to better himself and his career. It was clear to me that he had the "Drive" and "Ambition" to succeed in the real world.
I took him under my wing and gave him a couple of opportunities and he spun it into gold. After 120+ applications for different jobs, he re-evaluated his approach and landed a great job with a start-up in which he's been successfully building products ever since.
Ambition & drive can be a double-edged sword. For as much good as it can do you, it can have its drawbacks. Everyone needs to learn how to cultivate their drive and ambition, but balance it amidst your other qualities.

Building off of Episode 76 with the Boxing analogy, I'm going to keep that thought process moving forward and share with you today why you need to keep those gloves up and protecting your face.
Among the many punches that will be thrown at a designer as they go along their design process, is the unintentional biases that could slip in and knock us off balance. The outcome is a project that will feel a bit wobbly, and your confidence in the right course of action will diminish.
Today we take a look at 2 of the more common biases that could creep into your project:

Mariah Hay has built product organizations for some years now, most recently for the publicly traded company, Pluralsight. She was directly involved in growing its product team from 150 to 600 contributors in just a short couple of years.
In today's episode, she shares some of the insights gained in helping design those organizations to function at a high level, and what it takes to distribute information to all key players on those teams.
Additionally, we spend a lot of time talking about job titles. For the early-stage UX Designer, this is something you MUST listen to.

Even when I go to the gym, it's hard for me not to continue thinking about the world of UX. As I'm throwing punches into a bag and trying to better my footwork, lessons, and relations flood my mind that would have otherwise been a stretch.
UX Designers can throw a combination of punches. But as the fight progresses we've got to be able to pivot and stay in a good position. All that comes down to our footwork. A UX Designers' footwork is our unique ability to adapt to changing conditions and information

Last year I met with and had lunch with a recent UX Bootcamp graduate. Throughout that lunch, I was impressed by her level of understanding and knew that her realizations since Bootcamp could help so many who were still in school. With that, I invited her to the show and it was well worth it.
My guest today is Olivia Laboriel, shes a freelance UX Designer who graduated last year from a local 13 week Bootcamp. This episode isn't a knock or slander towards her Bootcamp or any Bootcamp for that matter, just a heads up on what you might want to be paying attention to while in school.

Today we depart from the topic of UX and dissect what makes a champion. I'm going to guess that if you listen, watch Designed Today, or are reading these show notes, you are in the pursuit of becoming better. But we often struggle to figure out where to begin. Setting goals should come easily, but getting lost in the details of that goal is all too common.
Today's episode is designed to help you understand what I've been doing recently to get me out of a extra-mile rut.

Did the title get you to come here for a story about how I was a design diva and I've overcome that? Or maybe for a spiteful story about design divas? Wow, what a clickbaity title. Sure there is a bit of design diva in all of us. It's hard to find a pure-bred design diva. But lets self assess to make sure that that design diva which IS in each of us, doesn't take the mainstage all too often.

Catherine Wong is the Chief of Product at Domo, a company that gives other companies BI leverage at cloud scale in record time. Her downline includes around 200 Engineers, Product Managers, and UX Designers. When asked "What advice do you have for someone in tech who is early in their career?" Catherine's response was simply, "Hustle".
This isn't just lip service either. I don't know very many people who've portrayed that mentality more than her. Catherines "Come-Up" story is filled with advice and lessons that will resonate with anyone early in their career, be it still in school or 5-10 years in.

Every now and then its fun to go un-scripted and answer a bunch of audience submitted questions.
On this episode, we answer the questions
How do I increase the phone calls I receive after applying for a job? And how can I get around the whole "no work experience" issue?
What is Nuemorphism?
How can I avoid getting frazzled at morning stand-up meetings?
Is it a good time to get into the UX industry given our current conditions?
How do you repair broken trust in the workplace?
These questions came in via the Designed Today slack community. If you want to join the community, you're invited! Head to DesignedToday.com/community to receive your invite.
