Paul Nicholson is a graphic designer. Over the past three decades, he has shaped the visual identity of electronic music, creating artwork for artists including Skrillex and Pharrell Williams. His most enduring work remains the logo he designed for Aphex Twin, now one of the most recognizable symbols in contemporary music.

He welcomed us into his home and studio in West London, where we spoke about his lifelong relationship with drawing, the visual culture of record sleeves, and the underground electronic music scene that emerged in the early 1990s. Surrounded by books, sketches and references, he reflected on the origins of the Aphex Twin logo, the mythology it has accumulated over time, and the role graphic design plays in shaping collective memory.

For Études, Paul Nicholson created the graphics for a capsule collection launched alongside Résonances, presented at IRCAM in Paris. Revisiting the visual language of early digital culture, he drew from the glitches, textures and technological limitations that defined a generation of designers and musicians.

The conversation continued along the canals of West London, where industrial architecture and traces of obsolete technologies echoed the themes running through his work. Together, we explored how design quietly shapes the objects we live with, the music we remember, and the symbols that endure.

François Dufeil is a visual artist. He lives and works at Wonder, where he creates sculptural tools from industrial containers diverted from their original function. He invites artists — musicians, painters, and ceramicists — to activate his works through public performances.

He welcomed us into his studio in Bobigny, where countless gas cylinders gathered for the making of his sound sculptures are arranged throughout the space. Together, we traced the thread of his creative process, moving between sketches, prototypes, and instruments used as part of our collaboration.

For the Spring–Summer 2026 show "Surroundings", François Dufeil created a soundtrack composed alongside his longtime collaborator Charles Dubois and performed by percussionist Amélie Grould. “At the Palais de Tokyo, in that immense space, we conceived an amplification that brought another dimension to the music,” he recalls.

The artist then took us to Les Instants Chavirés in Montreuil, where Solénoïde, an automated sculpture performing a composition written by Anna Holveck, was being presented. On the evening of April 3, we documented a performance by Charles Dubois — a percussive journey through space embodying the connection woven between visual and musical practices.
