WEEKLY FASCINATION with Tracy Greenwood Hosting DiJ10 Sep 202401:47:14

This interview was taken from my appearance on the Weekly Fascination show hosted by Tracy Greenwood, which you can watch here. Oh, and the cover art? Yeah, that’s definitely not the work of any fancy algorithms. Nope. Just a genuine, hand-drawn synthwave masterpiece of a “photo” of Tracy and me, in all our photorealistic glory. Absolutely no tech involved. None whatsoever.

  • NOTE: The claim that “1/3 of hafu children become futoukou (不登校児, meaning ‘children who don’t go to school,’ which includes both dropouts and those who are homeschooled)” seems to be more of an anecdotal or social observation rather than a widely documented statistic in official reports. While various sources highlight the challenges hafu children face in Japan—such as bullying, struggles with identity, and social exclusion—there is no specific government report or academic study that confirms the 1/3 figure. I can’t recall the exact source of this information, but it’s important to note that my daughter, for example, is registered as a junior high school (JHS) student despite being homeschooled, as our local municipality doesn’t officially recognize homeschooling as an option.
  • 30% to 40% of runway models in Japanese fashion shows now identify as hafu.

HH#70: The Otaku Spectrum09 Aug 202403:14:17

Once again, Trevor-kohai was lured into DIJ studios under the pretense of ‘a quick chat’ with 'free pizza and matcha' only to be mercilessly schooled in the ancient, highly classified art of podcasting—WW2 Japanese Secret Police-style. Picture it: 12 grueling hours of unrelenting waterboarding with Calpis (don’t worry, we used the fizzy kind for maximum effect) before he finally caved in and agreed to grace us with his presence for another round of HAPPY TIMES. And let me tell you, folks, the results are nothing short of miraculous. So buckle up, grab your spoons, and prepare yourself for a steaming hot serving of double cheese gyudon—served with a side of Trevor’s tears. Just the way you like it!

In this episode, we invite Professor John Rucynski back to discuss his book, Bridging the Humor Barrier: Humor Competency Training in English Language Teaching, and more generally the topic of joking in Japan. John is an associate professor at the Center for Language Education at Okayama University. His main research interest is exploring the role of humor in foreign language acquisition and intercultural communicative competence. In addition to editing two volumes about this passion, he has written numerous articles and given conference presentations around the world. His mission going forward is to at least slightly disprove the maxim that “Nothing is as unfunny as trying to explain why something is funny.” To learn more about John and his work, check out the following books and articles:

THE JAPAN LIGHTS with Iain Maloney08 Feb 202401:36:52

In this episode, we once again sit down with Iain Maloney, author of the critically acclaimed memoir, The Only Gaijin in the Village, to talk about his new book, The Japan Lights.

In 2017, holed up in a hotel room, feverish, despondent, and aimless, Iain Maloney chances upon an article about Richard Henry Brunton, a Victorian civil engineer unknown in his Scottish homeland but considered ‘The Father of Japanese Lighthouses’ in Japan. With more than twenty of his lighthouses still in use today, Maloney sets out with a newfound purpose to visit them all.

Part travel memoir, part history, The Japan Lights visits isolated regions of rural Japan, discovering compelling stories from its past. Maloney witnesses the lingering trauma of the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster, and comes to a new understanding of the precariousness of life on a planet that is 71 percent water. Along the way, he explores the paradox of Brunton, a flawed human being whose work saved hundreds of thousands of lives and made the seas around Japan safer for all.

A THOUSAND GRACES with Karen Hill Anton05 Jan 202401:13:22

In this episode, we welcome Karen Hill Anton back to discuss her wonderful new novel, A Thousand Graces. As you might recall, Karen was a guest on the podcast in June of 2021 to discuss her critically acclaimed memoir, The View From Breast Pocket Mountain. And now, with this new publication, Karen has broken into the world of literature, with a lovely tale about a young, Japanese female student who doesn’t quite fit into the mold of her surroundings. It’s a thoroughly engrossing, exquisitely crafted tale, that also serves as a window into the stodgy, patriarchal countryside mindset of Japan in the 60s and 70s. A must-read for anyone interested in contemporary Japanese fiction.
