Hello Everyone!

I was so excited when Amar Smalls reached out about being on the podcast. He is so funny and extremely talented. We talked about his dance journey, how he ended up in Ailey 2 (so iconic), Jake the snake, his art collective BROKELAND, and how sometimes he feels like Hannah Montanna.

AMAR SMALLS (Brooklyn, NY) began his dance training at The Abrons Arts Center Henry Street Settlement in New York City. In 2017, he graduated from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Arts and Performing Arts. He was a Scholarship and Independent Study student at The Ailey School and also trained at the Harlem School of the Arts and Steps on Broadway. At age 16, he started an art collective entitled BROKELAND, where artists create music, film, and paintings.

Órla Baxendale is a dancer from the UK, who moved to New York City for The Ailey School Scholarship Program. She has performed at New York Fashion Week, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and was recently cast in a new show about immigration in the US. She is a lover of ALL things fashion and creativity and never shys away from bold colors!

Wow, I had so much fun listening back to this conversation with Aidan from Feb 2022. We speak about his journy with dance, falling in and out of love with the art form, filming dance and he explains how NFTs can really change the futire of dance! There are so many great moments, this is seriously one of my favorite episodes yet!

Aidan Gibney is a New York City based filmmaker and director. Currently working as a director with Coming of Age and Pavillia NYC.

As one of NYC’s premier visual artists, Aidan is a lead photographer and filmmaker at the award-winning off-broadway show ‘Beyond Babel’. Aidan has worked in partnership with some of the entertainment industries best, including Casey Neistat’s 368, David Dobrik, Art Basel, B&H, Adobe, EA, and more. His works have been published throughout a wide range of articles ranging from ARTnews magazine to Dance Magazine and Dance Spirit magazine. Recent films include Rear View (2021), Emawk music videos, Behind Babel (2020), Rooted Kings (2020), to name a few.

Along with media arts production, Gibney is a professional choreographer and dancer on projects with k-pop’s BTS, Emawk, Ian Eastwood’s Young Lions, SHINSA The Collective, and much more.

Yay! First interview back after a while and it's a good one. 

Shiloh Goodin and Sara Brians are theatre-makers and the co-founders of Collectus. With years of witnessing and living the hardship of the creative career, they formed Collectus to give artists a damn break from having to carry it all themselves. They create and run an immersive creative support groups called Pod that has been called "a game-changer," "creative therapy and think-tank combined," and "more powerful than I could have even hoped." Sara performed as a Rockette and has worked on six Broadway shows. She now directs and choreographs for live theatre, events and film and is a dance educator at several of the country's top theatre & dance schools. Sara is also obsessed with cycling and plants. Shiloh has performed and choreographed around the world in musical theatre, teaches at conservatories like AMDA and AADA, and is making her Broadway debut this year. She was trained early as a facilitator and community organizer through her years serving on the California Youth Council, designing and running statewide conferences for young activists and leaders. Together, Sara and Shiloh use their combined experience as directors, educators, facilitators and creatives to design true community support for creative people. So artists can go solo, but not alone.

I loved talking to Jason Potell a few months ago. Jason is an incredible ballroom dancer and has traveled the world, learning different partner dances, teaching, and organizing events for the ballroom community. When he is not on the dance floor, he works to make his community better. Jason is currently running for Congress in Los Angeles, and he hopes to be a voice for all dancers, artists, and performers across the country! I loved chatting with Jessica Dorcey back in December. Jessica is an outstanding actor and singer who has had a fascinating journey with dance. She shares how she got into the theater world, the process of claiming the identity of "dancer," and an honest and emotional conversation of her relationship with dance right now. Jessica is also a real estate agent killing it in colorado! She broke down how buying a house might be more possible than you think. While we chatted, we made some hot chocolate spoons.

Hello!

I had SO much fun talking with my friend Ryan Miller back in December. Ryan never planned on being a dancer when he was younger and then even tried to quit but the unverse had different plans for him! While we chatted, attempted to make snowflakes and they sort of turned into facemasks.... check it out in the youtube video! 

Ryan is a dancer, teacher, choreographer, program creator.... he seriously does it all. You may have seen him dancing for Lizzo, Rihanna, Madona, Travis Scott, Kim Kardashian... just to name a few. Recently he was involved in the making of Karmas World on Netflix!

Happy Valentines Day!! This month I am focusing on getting studf done especially with my media. I saw the 50th Dance On Film Festival at Lincoln Center this weekend and was so inspired! My task for this week is to finish the dance on camera course I have and make a solid plan for my own dance film. In this episode I also talk about the Super Bowl Half Time show which has been in the news quite a lot and has brought to light how porrly dancers are paid and treated in this industry.

Today I am sharing my conversation with Melissa Bingey. While we chatted, we made diffuser onaments out of air-dry clay. check it out in the youtube video!

Melissa is a recent college graduate of Seton Hill University where she majored in Business Administration with specializations in marketing and human resources. During her time in college she began instructing dance at Apples Dance Lab. She has been instructing and choreographing dance for 4 years. Her training includes acrobatics, ballet, contemporary, tap and jazz. Before teaching, Melissa was a competitive dancer since the age of two. After graduating college she has combined her passion for dance and business to create her dance wear brand MP Athletics. MP Athletics is a dance wear brand made by dancers for dancers. Melissa hopes to create an inclusive brand that highlights the natural beauty of dancers with comfortable and versatile dance wear pieces.

Today I am sharing my conversation with Alexis Sicklick that we recorded in November! While we chatted, we made nutcrackers out of toilet paper rolls, and tbh mine looked pretty scary (check it out in the youtube video)

Alexis Grew up dancing and still is an active member of the NYC dance community when she isn't running her own business, being a professional chef, or writing her latest cookbook! We speak about how her training as a dancer still shows up in her life as a chef and her fantastic cookbook inspired by the Nutcracker. I am jumping into the land of working out... pray for me because I've been very seditary since zoom dance classes fizzled out. In this episode I'm sharing a few online and in person cross training classes I'm going to try. Some are free (yay!) and some cost real human money. Hello! 

I'm excited to share my conversation with the Incredible Carlos Kidd. While we chatted we decorated pumpkins and it was kind of a mess. Just so you know there were some weird technical issues during our livestream. I'm not an audio engeneer but I did my best to edit the strage audio!

Carlos Is a professional artist with many different skills! He claims the titles of professional dancer, lifestyle beauty & fashion photographer, director, actor, rapper, and mental health advocate. When he was growing up he was passionate about many different artistic areas, but never had the resources or mentors to guide him in the direction he wanted to travel. At 22 he decided to leave Pace University to pursue dance full time and along the way things started to fall into place. 

He now co-runs a production company called CARMA with his partner Emma (check out her episode!). Carlos is also in the process of developing a mental health/vulnerability support group called "Safe Space"

Hello! I'm excited to share my conversation with the amazing Lizzie Croucher. While we chatted we made pinch pots because not only is she an incredible dancer but she is a fantastic potter!

Lizzie started dancing as a child and went on to train in contemporary & ballet in London, UK at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Ater completing her time in university she performer traveling the world before moving to project management in community dance & visual art. Currently she is a full time ceramic artist. She produces hand thrown pottery, specifically one-off and small batch items, with their own little personalities.

Hello! Today I'm talking to Allison Bollinger while making paper cut out bats (spoooky vibes because our interview was in October lol)

Alli Bollinger, born and raised in Syracuse New York, now resides in New York City! She graduated with a BFA in Dance in 2020, and Is passionately pursuing a professional dance career. Along with that, she also works as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach. Alli is the creator of Wellness Without Obsession, a 1:1 health coaching program that helps women discover a better relationship with food and exercise, and gain a strong sense of confidence in their health. Overall Alli is very passionate about living a life doing what you love as your healthiest, happiest self!

Hello! Today I'm talking to Porshia Derival & Yvonne Chowwhile while making a three way creature drawing!

Porshia Derival is the Executive Director of H+ | The Hip-Hop Dance Conservatory. Growing up in Long Island, her journey in hip-hop dance started as a teenager at her local dance studio. In 2013, Porshia ushered in a new era of Dance Sustainability® for H+ at the historic You Belong Here.® Launch Party hosted at the adidas originals store where she was the voice behind the company’s next 20-year prospectus. Ever since, Porshia has keenly directed the organization's creative partnerships with top brands spanning a variety of industries, from Pastry Dance Sneakers in footwear and apparel, CORE Hydration in commercial drinks, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Shake Shack in dining, to MAC and Christian Dior in beauty and wellness, and many more. In 2013, Porshia was also appointed as Demi-Soloist of H+ | Theatre of the Mind® {TOTEM®}’s Repertory Company and has since taken on infamous characters such as “Black Barbie.” As the Executive Director, Porshia continues to be the keeper of the Kindness Capital Champions®, the elite chamber of donors and sponsors that graciously fuel the pro-bono services H+ offers to dancers to date: DanceMart®, SPA®, MEDIC®, and Pimp My Style®.

Yvonne H. Chow is a 1st generation Chinese American woman from the Bay Area, CA. She moved to NYC to pursue a profession in Hip-Hop Dance and has been training at H+ | The Hip-Hop Dance Conservatory via The BLADE Dance Technique® (S. Thomas, 1995) for over a decade under the mentorship and tutelage of H+ | Founder & Artistic Director Safi A. Thomas. She now serves as the Director of Operations, Education Director, Curator of Works, and Principal Dancer of H+. She works towards Dance Sustainability® daily by cultivating the the NGO's Special Consultative Status at the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. She also provides experienced oversight of the 30+ programmatic elements/community initiatives aimed at the majority of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for dancers and artists.

Hello! Today I'm talking to Nick Silverio while making avocado facemaks

Nick Silverio trained at Elite Academy of Dance in Shrewsbury, MA, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a concentration in Commercial Dance Management. He recently co-founded Artswrk (www.artswrk.com), a professional network for artists and creatives, with his long-time dance partner Ramita Ravi. Television: "Girls5Eva," "Saturday Night Live," "America's Got Talent," "So You Think You Can Dance" (Season 11/12 finalist). Theatre: Billy Elliot the Musical (Older Billy/Dance Captain - Goodspeed), La Cage Aux Folles (Riverside, Pioneer, Goodspeed), Elf the Musical (3rd & 4th national tour, Madison Square Garden). As a choreographer, Nick self-produced the viral video "First Burn" and has choreographed music videos for Penn Counterparts, Neisha Grace, and pop duo Eleven. He teaches guest workshops and competition choreography for studios across the East Coast, judges for various dance competitions, and coaches [solidcore] classes in NYC and on the Equinox+ app.

Hello! Today I'm talking to Jennifer Margono while making cat toys

Jennifer Margono studies House, Contemporary, and Hip Hop social dances in NYC, and grew up as a studio kid doing Ballet, jazz, and modern. Her recent credits include Beyond Babel (Keone and Mari), Shinsa (Bo Park), and The Orsano Project (Phil Orsano of Complexions and Joffrey), and is an alum of The Neighbors. 

She graduated with Distinction from Duke University with a B.S. in Evolutionary Anthropology and minors in Dance and Psychology, and was Co-President of multicultural dance group, defMo. Jennifer also works full-time at Google in their Advertising Technology business (aka the $$$ making part) as a Solutions Consultant.
