Diana Byer, Artistic Director Emeritus: Creating a Legacy, New York Theater Ballet and Beyond11 Sep 202400:51:53

“Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey and special guest, Diana Byer, founding director of the New York Theater Ballet.

In this episode of Dance Talk with Joanne Carey, join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest, Diana Byer, as she shares her life in dance which began from a suggestion made by her pediatrician to exercise. That first class lead to a lifetime career in dance, an art form on which she continues to leave her imprint and is creating a profound and exemplary legacy.

Diana discusses her commitment to developing dance artists and her outreach program for homeless and at-risk children.

Diana Byer received her principal dance training from Margaret Craske and Antony Tudor. She is the founder of New York Theater Ballet that stages works that are intimate in scale and able to touch audiences in deeply personal ways. Hailed by Dance Magazine as “a miniature American treasure,” NYTB is known for its theatrical inventiveness, high production quality, excellent technique, and accessibility to its audiences. She has been a guest instructor of the Cecchetti Society of America, the Cecchetti Society of Canada (Toronto), Cornell and New York Universities, State University of New York at Purchase, Martha Graham School, and other centers of dance. Ms. Byer conducts master classes in schools and performance settings across the USA and Europe.

Ms. Byer received extensive media attention for her ongoing work with homeless and at-risk children, winning special citations from President George Bush, First Lady Hillary Clinton, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the President’s Committee on the Arts & the Humanities. The LIFT Community Service program, which provides dance classes, performance opportunities, scholarships, and services for homeless and at-risk children in New York, was initiated at NYTB through her vision and commitment.

In 1988, 1990, and 1993, Ms. Byer received the Helen Wieselberg Award of the National Arts Club in recognition for her ongoing work with LIFT. In 1992, Lincoln Center produced, at Alice Tully Hall, a one-hour presentation for children called Dreams On A Shoestring, featuring an original script based on Ms. Byer and LIFT. She received a Humanitarian Hero recognition from Good Housekeeping Magazine for her ongoing work with LIFT and was the 2023 Martha Hill Dance Fund Lifetime Achievement Awardee. The feature-length film LIFT, documenting Ms. Byer’s journey of LIFT, was featured in the 2022 Tribeca Festival and recognized with a “Children’s Resilience in Film Award” by Shine Global.

In December 1996, she was again spotlighted in two features in Dance Magazine. Ms. Byer coached the principals in the Columbia Pictures film, Center Stage. She was a member of the Antony Tudor Centennial Celebration Committee and in 2008 staged Tudor’s Judgment of Paris for the American Ballet Theatre Gala at The Metropolitan Opera House. She is a repetiteur for the Antony Tudor Trust and a member of the Board of Directors of the Dance Notation Bureau and The Clive and Valerie Barnes Foundation.

In 2010 she assisted Kevin McKenzie in ABT’s restaging of Antony Tudor’s Jardin Aux Lilas (Lilac Garden) and staged Agnes de Mille’s Three Virgins and a Devil for the Alabama Ballet.

In 2011 Ms. Byer restaged Antony Tudor’s Soiree Musicale and the dances from Agnes de Mille’s Carousel, Oklahoma, and Brigadoon for American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company.

She continues to direct the NYTB School which she established in 1978.

"Where the Dance World Connects, the Conversations Inspire, and Where We Are Keeping Them Real."

Eduardo Vilaro, Artistic Director & CEO Ballet Hispanico: Honoring the Past. Celebrating the Present. Creating A Future.07 Sep 202400:53:13

Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey and special guest, Artistic Director & CEO, Eduardo Vilaro, Ballet Hispánico

In this episode of “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey, join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest, Eduardo Vilaro, who sits at the head of Ballet Hispánico, leading the organization into its 55th year as a world-class organization with a spirit of love, grace and humility.

This engaging and beautiful conversation explores the history of Ballet Hispánico, Mr. Vilaro's story of emigrating from Cuba at 6 years old, his career, his love for his culture, life and the art form along with his continued commitment to making the life and experience of the community around him purposeful and beautiful.

Eduardo Vilaro is the Artistic Director & CEO of Ballet Hispánico (BH). He was named BH's Artistic Director in 2009, becoming only the second person to head the company since its founding in 1970, and in 2015 was also named Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Vilaro has infused Ballet Hispánico’s legacy with a bold brand of contemporary dance that reflects America’s changing cultural landscape.

Mr. Vilaro’s philosophy of dance stems from a basic belief in the power of the arts to change lives, reflect and impact culture, and strengthen community. He considers dance to be a liberating, non-verbal language through which students, dancers, and audiences of all walks of life and diverse backgrounds, can initiate ongoing conversations about the arts, expression, identity, and the meaning of community.

Born in Cuba and raised in New York from the age of six, Mr. Vilaro’s own choreography is devoted to capturing the Latin American experience in its totality and diversity, and through its intersectionality with other diasporas. A Ballet Hispánico dancer and educator from 1988 to 1996, he left New York, earned a master’s in interdisciplinary arts at Columbia College Chicago and then embarked on his own act of advocacy with a ten-year record of achievement as Founder and Artistic Director of Luna Negra Dance Theater in Chicago.

The recipient of numerous awards and accolades, Mr. Vilaro received the Ruth Page Award for choreography in 2001; was inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame in 2016; and was awarded HOMBRE Magazine’s 2017 Arts & Culture Trailblazer of the Year. In 2019, he received the West Side Spirit’s WESTY Award, was honored by WNET for his contributions to the arts, and was the recipient of the James W. Dodge Foreign Language Advocate Award. In August 2020, City & State Magazine included Mr. Vilaro in the inaugural Power of Diversity: Latin 100 list. In January 2021, Mr. Vilaro was recognized with a Compassionate Leaders Award, given to leaders who are courageous, contemplative, collaborative, and care about the world they will leave behind. He is a well-respected speaker on such topics as diversity, equity, and inclusion in the arts, as well as on the merits of the intersectionality of cultures and the importance of nurturing and building Latinx leaders.

Andy Chiang emigrated to the Bronx, New York, from Taiwan when he was 14, with a single mom who worked as a nurse. A math whiz from a young age, Chiang caught the attention of a teacher who encouraged him to apply to prestigious undergrad programs. Computer science was just beginning to take off when Chiang began at MIT, and he eventually migrated from math into computing. He worked at IBM over several summers, researching automatic programming (or early AI), earning both money and MIT credits. Through his work at IBM, he received his master’s degree as part of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science’s 6-A program.

Finishing his studies at the dawn of the personal computer, Chiang resisted the call of Silicon Valley heeded by many of his peers. Instead, he stayed on the East Coast and joined a startup, founded by a fellow MIT alum, that focused on transactional computing in finance, designing systems to be crash resistant. He moved on to working on crash resistance at AT&T Bell Labs before starting a company called Intellimed, an early pioneer in electronic medical records. After selling the company, he worked as an independent consultant on projects in health care and finance.

Chiang had already met his future wife at MIT when she performed for the Chinese Student Club in a dance troupe visiting from Taiwan. (Chen was the troupe’s lead dancer; Chiang was the club’s president.) The two stayed in touch, and Chen eventually emigrated to the US to attend New York University. They married in 1982, and Chen started her namesake company six years later. By the time Chiang decided to step away from consulting and dedicate himself full time to the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, he had also served on a panel evaluating grants for the NEA and on the board of the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation.

Finis Jhung's career spans six decades and has left his mark on Broadway, in film, and on stages across the world. While still a dancer, he studied with the greats—Valentina Pereyaslavec, Vera Volkova, Stanley Williams, Erik Bruhn, Rosella Hightower, and David Howard—and danced in the San Francisco Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet, and the Harkness Ballet. He danced for presidents and dignitaries and eventually founded and choreographed for his own ballet company. Now in the second phase of his career as a renowned and beloved dance instructor, Finis has taught everyone from prima ballerinas and Broadway stars to adult beginners. His goal is to make ballet accessible to everyone, to create innovative ways of teaching, and to inspire present and future generations of dancers. Not content with life in the studio, he has created more than 50 instructional dance videos, produced 18 music CDs, and authored The Finis Jhung Ballet Technique: A Guide for Teachers & Students—all so that aspiring dancers of every level can learn his techniques, without ever leaving home. In Ballet for Life: A Pictorial Memoir, he shares his own story for the first time, starting from humble roots in World War II Hawaii.Still actively teaching at the age of 86, his greatest joy is helping students find their “inner dancer.”

Gene Schiavone: A Portrait of Gratitude, A Dance Photographer and His Treasure Box of Thank You Notes22 Nov 202300:54:33

“Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey and  Gene Schiavone.

In this episode of  “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey,  join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest: Dance Photographer Gene Schiavone  about his  career which grew out of a hobby.

You will meet this humble man behind the lens who captures moments in time thus memorializing history.

Gene shares how he savors the relationships he has made and the individuals he has met, summing up his career by his treasured box of thank you notes, saying in his own words, "You measure your life, in some way,  by how many thank you notes you got."

Gene Schiavone became interested in photography as a child.  With no formal training, he went on to become a sought after Dance Photographer. What began as a childhood curiosity became a budding career,  photographing some of the worlds best ballet dancers. Gene attributes his introduction to the world of ballet to his wife through her involvement with ABT (American Ballet Theater). His informal conversation with renowned ballerina, Julie Kent, piqued his interest in the art form and then began to attend more ballet performances. Around that same time, Gene was given permission to photograph performances of ABT's studio company and after two years was invited to photograph the main company, which led to other requests for similar work.

Gene's work and images includes Boston Ballet, Mariinsky Theatre, Bolshoi Ballet, Washington Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Atlanta Ballet and The Radio City Rockettes among others. His images have appeared New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and all the major dance publications both here and abroad.

In March 2020, Gene retired from studio photography and is currently working on his first book in collaboration with retired ballerina and dance writer, Gavin Larsen.

Gene continues to acknowledge his gratitude for all the dancers he has worked with over the years and for the hundreds of pairs of signed shoes and photos he remembers them by.

Lauren Lovette: I feel like I am in a Playground Everyday26 Oct 202301:03:53

“Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey and special guest, Lauren Lovette, Resident Choreographer for Paul Taylor Dance Company

In this episode of  “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey,  join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest, Lauren Lovette.

Joanne sat in on a rehearsal of a new piece for all male dancers that Lauren created for The Paul Taylor Dance Company prior to this episode.  Here they not only talk about this new piece, but Lauren's career as a ballerina and the transition Lauren made into the modern/contemporary dance world as well as her current position as resident choreographer.  During their conversation, you will also hear that they share the belief that dance belongs to everyone.

Lauren Lovette  personifies the intertwining of dance and choreography, moving seamlessly from one to the other. Her work has been commissioned and performed by leading dance companies and festivals, including the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the Vail International Dance Festival, American Ballet Theatre Studio Company, the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Nevada Ballet Theatre, as well as a self-produced evening entirely of her own work in which she also danced, Why It Matters. She began creating dance as a ballet student, for a 2007 choreographic workshop showing at the School of American Ballet (SAB). Another ballet, for the 2008 workshop, was soon followed by her being selected to create a work for the 2009 New York Choreographic Institute. In 2016, Lovette, then a relatively new principal dancer, was asked to choreograph her first piece, that then premiered at the New York City Ballet Fall Fashion Gala. In 2017, she choreographed for the Vail International Dance Festival, the NYCB Fall Season Gala, and the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company. She was awarded the Virginia B. Toulmin Fellowship at the Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University in fall of 2018, and a year later created a work for the 2019 Fall Fashion Gala at NYCB. Her work at NYCB is noteworthy, forging a path for other female choreographers in an area of dance that has notably been predominantly male.Born in Thousand Oaks, CA, Lovette began studying ballet at the age of 11 at the Cary Ballet Conservatory in Cary, NC. She enrolled at SAB as a full-time student in 2006. In October 2009, Ms. Lovette became an apprentice with NYCB and joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in September 2010. Promoted to soloist in February 2013 and to principal dancer in June 2015, she stepped down from her position at the company in 2021 to embark on a career devoted to dance and choreography in more equal measure. Ms. Lovette received the Clive Barnes Award for dance in December 2012 and was the 2012-2013 recipient of the Janice Levin Award.

Her unshakeable belief that dance brings about positive change, giving hope to those without hope, is creating a ripple effect and becoming a growing worldwide movement.

Mark Mann: Behind the Lens. The Making of "Movement at the Still Point, an Ode to Dance"16 Jun 202301:02:03

Movement at the Still Point, An Ode to Dance

In this episode of  “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey, join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest: Mark Mann, renowned Celebrity Photographer, who found himself, like all of us, silent and without a space to create during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown. For an artist, not being able to create is lonely, for a dancer, not being able to move, is a daily death. Enter sister-in-law, Loni Landon, choreographer, dancer & movement director living in NYC who suggested to Mark to take some photographs of her community who were hurting as well. Together with Loni, Jacob Levy (Mark's producer) along with a host of other yes's, and over 140 dancers, a collaboration was born that transcends any photographic lens. Mark says it best: "In what had been my first moment of stillness, I discovered boundless humanity in their movement. This book is a testament to the power of their expression, in movement and stillness."

MARK MANN is a renowned celebrity and advertising photographer who originally hails from the sun-soaked streets of Glasgow Scotland. The countless list of famous faces photographed in Mann’s unique and recognizable style includes President Barack Obama, President Bill Clinton, Iggy Pop, Rihanna, Martin Scorcese, Jennifer Aniston, Stevie Wonder, Eartha Kitt, Robin Williams, Emma Stone, Bill Murray, Jessica Lange, Arthur Miller, Margot Robbie, Robert Redford, Queen Latifah, Michael Douglas, Gillian Anderson, Dave Chappelle, Olivia Wilde, Bradley Cooper, Willie Nelson, Sean Connery and many more. Mark’s editorial work has appeared in Esquire, Men’s Health, Vibe, Spin, Fortune, Billboard, Parade, and Complex, and his clients include Reebok, Adidas, Hennessy, Bombay Sapphire, Pepsi, Gillette, Vitamin Water, NHL, Zumba, Ford, Chrysler, and Svedka to name a few.

Always hungry for new subjects and challenges Mark has spearheaded his own projects over the years, one of which was creating a collection of LUCHA LIBRE wrestlers.  Where all the photographs were shot on a vintage Graflex camera using polaroid instant film. Most recently he was struck by the contrast of dancing bodies to his traditional portraits in a new body of work which culminated in a book titled Movement at The Still Point: an Ode to Dance published by Rizzoli International in March 2023.

Mark was born in Glasgow, where he lived until he was accepted to the prestigious photographic program at Manchester Polytechnic. Upon graduating Mark was immediately taken under the wing by innovative fashion photographers, Nick Knight and Miles Aldridge, where he learned the ropes and quickly built his own body of work. Three years later, Mark started shooting on his own and relocated to New York City where 26 years later he still lives with his wife and son, and their recently adopted Chihuahua, Shaq.

Within the series, several guests join Joanne to dive into the responsibility of carrying on the mission and legacy of well established and often world famous dance companies, dance institutions and academies as well as the journey of artistic directors who are forming and have created new dance companies and institutions; all whom are paving the way in the dance world, making their artistic mark for generations to come.

In this episode, Joanne sits down, across time zones, with Gina Tse, to discuss Gina's artistic vision and the freedom of creating a dance organization from the ground up and in doing so is instilling the mission of "giving back — teaching from the heart to spread the joy of dance". By keeping the love of the art form, the well-being of her students, and the leadership of her staff at the forefront, Gina has taken both her extraordinary dance and theater background as well as her professional career as a principal dancer with the Royal Swedish Ballet, to create a school where the joy of artistry is nurtured and the vehicle of dance is used as the building blocks of life.

Gina Tse began her ballet training at 3 years of age and commenced her pre-professional training at The Royal Ballet School in London seven years later. She was a dancer with English National Ballet before joining The Royal Swedish Ballet  in 2004. There, she was promoted to First Soloist in 2007 and Principal Dancer in 2011–– the same year she was awarded Dancer of the Year in Stockholm.

She danced with Stockholm 59°North soloists and was also nominated for Benois de la Dance in Moscow at the Bolshoi Theatre in 2016. Gina has danced for The Swedish Royal Family on numerous occasions, including The Nobel Banquet, and has performed Swan Lake for the Opening of Parliament.

Gina’s instrumental role in the development of The International Ballet School and Arts Centre has been constant. From teaching 3 year olds the thrill of movement within classical dance steps, to preparing her pre-professionals and Trainee Professionals for coming careers at the world’s leading ballet schools and companies, her infectious love of dance and performance is contagious. With a remarkable 100% graduate success rate, it’s no surprise that Gina Tse and the IBS teaching staff are in demand. Students and professionals from near and far regularly turn to IBS for masterful preparatory ballet training, and IBS senior associates have won scholarships from Carina Ari Foundation, as well as Gold and Silver Medals at the AED International Dance Competition held in Italy. Gina and her staff have taught at numerous summer dance workshops and schools across the globe.

“Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey and special guest, Michelle Leagans.

In this episode of Dance Talk with Joanne Carey, Joanne is joined by Michelle Leagans, an educator, choreographer, and author of her newly released book, "Hey Dancers, Let's Talk About it!"

Michelle shares her background in dance, starting at a young age and eventually dancing for the NBA and NFL. She discusses her experiences in the dance team industry in Texas and her passion for creating a positive and inclusive environment for dancers. Michelle also talks about her book, 'Hey Dancers, Let's Talk About It,' which aims to open up discussions about important topics in the dance industry. In this part of the conversation, Joanne and Michelle discuss the importance of effective communication in the dance world. They emphasize the need for dancers to choose their words wisely and have open lines of communication with their teachers and peers. They also discuss the quote from Michelle's book that highlights the importance of understanding the why behind dancing, rather than focusing solely on winning trophies. They go on to discuss several chapters from Michelle's book, including why dancers love to dance, the importance of supporting and cheering on teammates, and the significance of taking corrections and being open to feedback.

The conversation between Michelle Leagans and Joanne Carey focused on the importance of communication and positive energy in the dance community. They discussed the need for dancers, teachers, and parents to have open and honest conversations to improve team culture. Michelle emphasized the value of journaling as a tool for self-reflection and communication. They also touched on the impact of negative energy and the role of mental health in the dance community.

Michelle Leagans Todero began her dance journey at Oklahoma City University, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance Performance. Following her academic pursuits, Michelle embarked on a remarkable performance career, gracing stages for esteemed organizations such as the NBA, NFL, Busch Gardens, and Six Flags. Her talent and dedication soon led her to the realm of choreography, where she found her true calling. Settling in Houston, Texas, Michelle immersed herself in drill team choreography, becoming a sought-after name in the industry. Over the years, she has crafted award-winning contest pieces for over 100 high school teams and continues to choreograph for the NFL Texans Cheerleaders. In recognition of her exceptional skills, Michelle was honored as the Texas Dance Educators Association All State Choreographer in 2018, solidifying her reputation as a leader in her field. Most notably, she lent her expertise to the world-famous Kilgore Rangerettes for their 2024 Revel performances. Driven by her passion for nurturing young talent, Michelle founded Power Intensives, a revolutionary dance program that fuses intensive training with a vibrant party atmosphere. With Power Intensives now spanning 20 locations annually and attracting over 1,500 dancers, Michelle's impact on the dance world continues to grow. She recently published her first book, Hey Dancers Let's Talk About It! Outside of her bustling career, Michelle finds joy and support in her loving family. She resides in Houston with her husband Jaymie and their two shelties.

The conversation explores the importance of community, the struggles of advanced dancers, the impact of fear on the mind-body connection, tools for mental wellness, prioritizing self-care, and the power of validation and community. In Danscend, Deiss and Loucadoux have created a resource that they wish was available when they were beginning their dance careers, a resource that will benefit not only their students but also the dance industry as a whole.

Michelle Loucadoux and Kristen Deiss are the co-founders of Danscend, a mental health organization focused on the well-being of dancers. They started Danscend in response to the mental health struggles they observed in the dance community, particularly during the pandemic. Michelle has a background in ballet and musical theater, while Kristen started as a ballet dancer but shifted to teaching and higher education. They both have a passion for education and saw a need for mental health resources tailored to dancers. Danscend offers courses, resources, and workshops for dancers and dance teachers, with a focus on creating a supportive and inclusive environment. Dancers face challenges such as negative self-talk, perfectionism, and body image issues. The pandemic exacerbated feelings of isolation and stress. It is important for dancers to prioritize self-care and seek support from their community. Tools for dancers include reflection, journaling, and validating feelings.
