Season 2 Episode 10 Dad Like a Seahorse: My deeply wise, rich, thoughtful conversation with visual artist, songwriter, poet Dad Chad Elliott08 Apr 202400:44:50

Send us Fan Mail

This episode of Dad Like a Seahorse left me both laughing and crying for days. Visual artist, songwriter, poet, Chad Elliott, has so much to share about being a dad to his three children and now one granddaughter after growing up without a dad. So much wisdom and depth and hilariousness (why is talking about farting always funny?). Hear about Chad's children's book of stories and gorgeous, bold artwork Wilderman's Treetop Tales be moved by his original poem. Listen to his life-changing moment of returning to his six-year-old self, finding his way back to being playful, messy, comfortable in his skin, and light-hearted self. Hear what it feels like to be "that person" who makes a difference in a troubled young boy's life. Be moved by what Chad imagines his daughter saying about what it was like to have Chad as her dad. This is a wonderful conversation. Please enjoy and share it.

DLAS Season 2 Episode 7: My conversation with Dr. Bill Thomas about Bossy Dads & Guardrails08 Jan 202400:40:54

Send us Fan Mail

Dr. Bill Thomas is the dad of five children. He is also  a physician, professor, entrepreneur, playwright, and performer whose wide-ranging work explores the terrain of human aging. His dedication to culture change and innovations for well-being led the Wall Street Journal to highlight Dr. Thomas as one of the nation’s “top 10 innovators” changing the future of retirement in America and US News and World Report named him to its list of “America’s best leaders.”

I would love for you to tune into our conversation about how all five of his children are so different, his own childhood love of books, and why he didn't take his dad up on his offer to get a job at the plant. This is a beautiful conversation about following children's lead whether it's off to the military or giving his son a forge for his 11th birthday. Two of Dr. Thomas's children were born with a rare medical condition that shaped his dad journey. There is so much wisdom and love in this conversation. Enjoy!

We explore the intersection of Physics & Philosophy. You'll get a to hear Rowan's song, Little Bird (written before he was born). We talk about the importance of working puzzles & eating sushi.

Jonathan talks about, "Being the dad I wanted."

It's a wonderful conversation. I hope you enjoy it and share it with other dads.

More from Jonathan ...

I’m a Teacher.

I’ve traveled the world with my songs. Now I want to teach you how to write them.

For more than twenty years, I’ve made my living writing, recording, publishing, and licensing my own songs. I’ve won awards- my personal favorite being the Kerrville New Folk award in 2003 with fellow winners Anais Mitchell, writer of the multiple Tony Awards® winning “Hadestown”, and Colin Brooks of the Band of Heathens- and I’ve been covered by great artists like Sam Bush, Larry Keel, and Red Molly.

I still just want to write the next great song. I want to be knocked over by songs, talk about songs, take them apart, rewrite them and figure out how they work. That’s why I love teaching- because I learn so much.

Anyone can write songs. The desire to do it IS the talent. If you want to write songs, I can teach you how.

I’m the little guy, by the way. He had big dreams, and he made it. Now I’ve got another big dream. I want to hear YOUR song.

Your fan,
Jonathan Byrd

Season 1 Episode 3: Jon Camp talks about his journey as a father and how his "fathering" has changed over the years. 09 Sep 202200:41:21

Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of Dad Like a Seahorse, I have a great conversation with Jon Camp about what being a father means to him. He explores the differences between his relationship with his two biological kids who live on the west coast and his stepson. We explore the idea of becoming friends with our kids - how does that happen and what would that look like? Jon Camp was born in Seattle, Washington and spent years moving around the country. After receiving a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Yale and a Master's degree in Journalism from Syracuse, he started a career as a television news reporter that took him across the country. Starting at WWNY in Watertown, NY, he moved on to KESQ in Palm Springs, WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut, WMTW in Portland, Maine and finally ABC11 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Jon’s last position in TV news was Managing Editor of the I-Team. He earned multiple Emmys along the way and moderated both U.S. Senatorial and Congressional debates. Jon left the news in 2017 and now runs a video production company, Ever Living Memories, helping families and individuals share and preserve their most important memories and moments (www.everlivingmemories.com). Jon's an accomplished singer/songwriter and loves mountain biking, hiking, camping, and all things outdoors. He also loves reading up on history and painting. He lives in Raleigh with his fiancé and step son. His two biological kids live in California.

DLAS Season 3 Episode 3: PART 2 of My Amazing Conversation with Alex Trippier: The Power of Packing11 Oct 202400:30:34

Send us Fan Mail

In this first-ever Part 2, I continue my conversation with Dad of three kids, Alex Trippier. Alex explains his 'evolution' as a dad learning how to pack for family trips, which involved his wife, Eloise, learning how to step back and letting Alex make mistakes.  "You can't live in shame and change at the same time."

Challenging for Mums to step back and to no longer be in charge.

The 'instinct' is for the Mum to "own the problems," when it's really both parents' job to teach kids how to be responsible for their own lives.

Why do Mums think it's their job to be responsible for the family?
Dads have to choose to take on fatherhood. To choose to be cracked open by our children.

Season 1 Episode 2: Fred Peretz Cohn's Journey as a Dad15 Aug 202200:36:15

Send us Fan Mail

Born in New Brunswick, NJ, Fred Peretz Cohn spent his early childhood in neighboring Highland Park before moving with his family to the Jersey Shore. He graduated from Rutgers University with a B.A. in French, received a masters in French Studies from New York University, and subsequently spent several years working and studying in Paris. He lived in New York City (1979-2002) before moving to Ithaca, NY.

His artwork is an extension and reflection of the natural world. He creates textural pieces using vegetation – including wood fiber, tree bark and limbs, clay, sand, foliage and flower petals, fruit peels and pulp, onion, garlic and avocado skins, tea leaves, coffee grounds, and the found organic objects of forests, mountains, glens, rivers and streams.

He focuses on exploring and revealing the materiality (in texture, tone, and organization) of Nature’s vast creative expression. Every tree is a living sculpture. The forest floor, mosses, rock, clay, sand, soil, dirt, and roots are all elements of a natural, renewable, self-sustaining masterpiece.

While my use of naturally sourced vegetation arose from a desire to move away from commercial pigments, canvas, and other manufactured supplies, his intention is to express a deep reverence for the beauty and magic of the natural world.

Currently, Fred resides in Asheville, NC with his wife and their two children.

DLAS Season 3 Episode 2: My Awesome Conversation with Dad Neil Levine Whose Wife Wrote the Book BoyMom31 Jul 202400:41:25

Send us Fan Mail

Hello Dad Like a Seahorse fans. This episode is really special. I just finished reading an amazing book called BoyMom by Ruth Whippman.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/06/style/boy-mom-ruth-whippman.html

I reached out to Ruth to tell her how much her book means to me, and I ended up getting the chance to talk to the Dad of her three sons! My conversation with Neil Levine is so wonderfully engaging. He grew up in the north of London and moved to the Bay Area after his first son was born. Now this very-engaged Dad of three sons, he shares what he has learned along the way. We talk about the importance of teaching our sons why friendships matter and why it's a good idea to expose our sons to more than just Star Wars, Tolkein and Harry Potter (although of course we love those too!). I hope parents will listen to this conversation and go out and get their copy of BoyMom. It's a very important, well-researched, and timely book.

PS. I'm releasing this episode early to get the word out about this book!
