Colorado College Women's Upset Win25 Sep 202400:33:30

We know it's September. Colorado College Women's team knows it's September, but they are still fired up to come away from the John McNicholas Invite with a huge win over NYU and Chicago.

We sit down with captains Elliot Singer and Isabel Olson to reflect on the win, how summer training has prepared them for this season, and how patience fueled this victory.

They go in-depth not only on their own stories but share why this result felt like a long time coming. They're excited to see the hard work pay off but want this result in November.

They'll use the confidence from this weekend to power them the rest of the season and don't plant to make any drastic changes.

From the D3 Record Book to the D1 Champ: Cheick Traore13 Jun 202400:37:20

The D3 Champ is now the D1 champ.

Last week, Cheick Traore went into Hayward Field and walked away with the 200m title after running 19.95.

Cheick's progressions has been so fun to watch. He came out of high school without even thinking about Division 1 and went to Ramapo College to continue his track career.

Once at Ramapo, he believe in his coaches and bought into the idea that he can improve.

He never thought he would improve this much.

Traore credit Ramapo for his development and preparing him to make the next jump to Penn State.

At Penn State, the training schedule stayed the same which made his transisition easier. Add in teammates to train with and Cheick opened up faster than he finished the indoor season in D3. He knew something special can happen.

Cheick signed with Total Sports to represent him and will turn pro. All the information will be announced at a later date.

He will be representing Ivory Coast at the Olympics!

Making D3 Proud.

Episode 83 - Brian Diemer12 May 202201:14:01

On April 28th, 2022, Brian Diemer announced his retirement from coaching at Calvin College after 36 years. What does a D3 coach do before going off into the sunset? An interview on D3 Glory Days!

After 34 straight MIAA cross country titles, Coach Diemer has left his legacy not only Calvin College but across D3 as a whole. What started as a two year stint to help the current coach at the time write a book, turned into a prosperous 36 year career.

Before getting to Calvin, Diemer was coming off the best year of his own running career. Diemer won a Bronze medal at the 1984 Olympics in LA, had a Nike contract, and just ran a lifetime best of 8:16. His career has taken him across the world to compete at the highest stage and made two Olympic teams as the head coach at Calvin.

From this conversation, you would have never guessed Diemer’s team won four national titles and had four runner-up performances along with other podium finishes. We can list out all the accolades but the theme from Coach Diemer was how much he enjoyed working with his student-athletes, regardless of his finishes. He said the biggest thing he’ll miss most from coaching are the daily interactions he’ll have with his team.

Episode 82 - Jack Flood03 May 202201:10:24

The new era in athletics involves an athlete to do more than show up to a meet, compete, and then go home. Social media has changed the way athletes are able to connect with their fans to show not only their training, but their personality. Jack Flood has built a large following on his Tik Tok to show his training and his love for the best CPD.

From an athletic perspective, Flood’s story is one of great progression. As a high school athlete, Flood was unsure what his plans were nor what he wanted to do. He was all set on not going to college as he wanted to figure out what to do with his life but after winning the sate Pentathlon and encouragement from his high school coach, Jack enrolled at D3 JUCO school, SUNY Delhi (now a full D3 school).

While at Delhi, his love for track and field intensified despite the situation he was dealing with there. With the lack of facilities and coaches, the path to improvement was difficult but that wasn’t going to stop him from going back on his word. Despite the lack of support, he won the decathlon twice but was aware that his score wasn’t good enough. His desire to improve intensified and he knew going to the next level would push him.

Jack transferred to SUNY Cortland which dramatically improved his situation. All of a sudden he had coaches that cared, great facilities, teammates that wanted to improve which Jack thrived off of. His first year he finished 3rd in the Hep and 4th in Dec but wasn't satisfied with those results. That summer, he visualized how he was going to improve and came into his senior year hungry for a title. His senior year, he won both the Hep and Dec and he knew his journey didn’t stop there.

The Double - New Era in D3 Sprints with JP Vaught29 Apr 202200:25:24

20.66. The new D3 200m record. Last year when we interviewed JP, he predicted he would run 20.76. Last week, he came through with his prediction a whole tenth faster.

In this episode of the Double, we chat with JP on his current season, his indoor season and what we can expect from JP the rest of the season. As a confident runner, JP is feeling great as we head into the championship season but won't let his head get too big.

We should note we did speak with Derrick Jackson after his 100m record, but given the questionable mark deemed by the USTFCCCA, we're going to hold onto that episode.

Episode 81 - Kathy Derks26 Apr 202201:00:49

“Don't be afraid to hurt because it's going to hurt.  Getting better, getting faster - it hurts, it sucks, and it's uncomfortable. But just being able to understand your limits and knowing where those are is a big first step in order to reach some of those goals.”

Last week, thousands of runners ran from Hopkinton to Boston to compete in the 126th running of the Boston Marathon. The 8th American that day was a college 400 runner from Wisconsin Stevens Point, Kathy Derks.

The progression that Kathy has made from her college days to her marathoning is incredible. Especially since she hated to walk when she was 10 years old and had her mom push her in a stroller during their vacation in New York City.

Kathy wasn’t recruited onto the UWSP team but simply asked to join. She came in as a 60s 400m runner with room to improve and the determination to get better. It was a after a breakout race her sophomore year where she finally dipped under 60s that she realized her potential.

As she moved to the cross country team to help her 800, she began taking running more seriously. And her times dropped with her increased dedication. When the dust settled, Derks was a 57/2:13 400/800 meter runner after improving from a 60/2:29 runner.

After she graduated, she had difficulty not being on a team and gravitated toward distance running. She started running because she had the time to do so. As she trained for her first marathon, the goal of running Boston became her focus. She ran 3:01 in her debut and was hooked.

As her marathon days progressed, she needed to help to achieve her goals. She reached out to a friend to coach her and the partnership has seen even more improvement. As she grasps what this new PB means to her, Kathy will continue to run for the love of it. In 2024, she’ll toe the line of the Olympic Trials hopefully as a 2:30 marathoner.

The Double - Upping the Standard with CMS22 Apr 202200:36:55

This week on The Double, Natalie Bitetti, Riley Harmon, Emily Clarke, and Meredith Bloss join to talk about finishing 2nd in XC, fast times in track, and the culture at CMS. Not being on campus for the ‘20-'21 school year was challenging but it brought a renewed love for running for the CMS team. Many of them were able live together while being able to train consistently during that time. After John Goldhammer retired, Emily and Riley played a role in finding their new coach and are so happy with how their new coach, Marina Muncan, has positively impacted their program.

While a lot of the discussion revolved around their team success and culture, we were able to hear about their unique experiences. Meredith transferred from Cornell to get away from the cold, but to also have a small school experience. She found that the individual focus she receives in the classroom and at practice has led to success in both areas.

Natalie Bitetti was originally recruited to CMS for softball but after picking up cross country during her senior year of high school, she has shifted her focus into becoming a full-time runner. In her first full year, she was 16th in XC and has run 4:33 for the 1500m in track!

CMS is ready to chase fast time this season, break school record and be apart of the rise that is happening in D3 right now. It’s clear they’re having fun with it and enjoy the community they have built at CMS.

So far this season they’ve run:

Meredith Bloss - 16:51/34:35

Natalie Bitetti - 2:16/4:33

Emily Clarke - 4:39/16:53

Riley Harmon: 10:58 (steeple)/ 17:04

Episode 80 - Frank Gramarosso19 Apr 202201:15:18

“Like the air we breathe, there's something there that has kept us [Al] together and it's the biggest emotion you have. That's love for each other and love for the program that Al started. I tried to do the best I can, and I hope somebody else is is willing to put in the time and energy that it takes.”

On April 4th, Frank Gramarosso announced his retirement from North Central College marking a new era for the historic program. For the first time in almost 60 years, NCC with be conducting a search for a new Cross Country & Track and Field Coach.

Gramarosso began at North Central in 1983 as a part-time assistant coach. He was still teaching at a local high school, but his passion was in coaching. In 1985, Al Carius promoted Gramarosso to full-time assistant to allow Gramarosso to go all in on his coaching. He was tasked with building up the track and field side of the program as the cross country program had already won six national titles.

Gramarosso helped North Central claim its first track and field national title in 1989 and would be the start of something special. Throughout his time, Gramarosso’s teams won 12 total track and field national titles and enjoyed five straight from Indoors in 2010 through Indoors in 2012.

While winning was fun, Gramarosso enjoyed making his student-athletes better people. His goal was to create a program built on trust and love as to not completely focus on times and titles. His time spent at North Central has seen countless trophies and accolades, but he’s most proud of the fact that there are over 100 current coaches that called North Central home.

Gramarosso’s impact is not only felt at North Central but across the entire division. We want to thank him for his what he’s done for the sport and division. We hope he enjoys his retirement and only goes back to campus one day a week!

The Double - Program Goals with Pomona-Pitzer15 Apr 202200:42:27

Welcome back to D3 Glory Days! It’s been a bit since we last spoke but we’re back with a few guys from Pomona-Pitzer. On today’s episode of The Double, we speak with Colin Kirkpatrick, Lucas Florsheim, and Bennett Booth on Pomona’s national title in xc and how the season is going so far.

The team has 16 guys under 15min in the 5k and just added their 17th last night. They speak highly of the team culture as it’s a community that lifts each other up. While they were not allowed on campus for all of the 2020-2021 school because of COVID, the team lived and trained together all across the country. A big group was in Asheville, NC and they contribute that time together as a big catalyst for their success.

On top of not being on campus for that school, their coach from the 2019 XC National Championship team, Jordan Carpenter, left for BU. Stepping in to replace him was their assistant coach, Kyle Flores. They speak highly of the transition and how well Kyle has done given these circumstances. You can get a sense that the strong team culture didn’t they a school year a part and a new coach change the trajectory of the program.

This was a fun a conversation to get a better idea of what happening over in California. One big takeaway is how proud they are of their team, their conference and being D3 athletes. They talked about getting excited for other schools running well because it helps the collective of D3 running.

Pomona will be a force to reckon with next fall as 5/7 will return and more than half of the 16 under 15 are underclassmen.

While they wanted to talk about the team success, here is what each guy has ran this season so far:

Colin Kirkpatrick - 8:53 (steeple), 14:23

Lucas Florsheim - 14:13, 29:55

Bennett Booth - 1:49, 4:05(mile), 14:36

We move up in distance this week and speak with Colorado College head coach, Alex Nichols. Alex is professional trail/ultra runner for Scott Running and finished 3rd overall at the USATF 100mile Road Championships.

Alex was drawn to Colorado College due to the access to the trails and the unique academic calendar. His freshman class was large and showed a lot potential to become a great team. Throughout his time at CC, they would consistently send individuals to the national meet but come up just shy of making it as a team. His senior year, they accomplished what they set out to do by making it as a team. Alex finished 14th overall and CC finished 21st.

After college, Alex had early success at Pikes Peak Marathon where he beat multiple sponsored athletes. He wanted to see how far he could take trail running especially when he knew there was an all expensed paid trip to compete internationally. He competed multiple times for Team USA at the Mountain Running Championships and was highlighted by a 6th place finish in 2015 where Team USA earned 2nd place.

His success doesn’t end there as notable highlights from his trail/ultra career including winning the Pikes Peak Marathon twice, holding the course record at Mont Blanc 80k, and a 2nd place at Western States in 2017.

No Limits: Eric Gregory11 Jun 202400:47:22

Today’s episode felt like a long time coming, but we’re happy to finally welcome Eric Gregory of Gallaudet to D3 Glory Days. We started this episode with a conversation with head coach Byron Moore, getting his insights on what makes Gregory such a special competitor.

Moore and Gregory have a unique opportunity in the track world to head to the startling together, as Moore will give Eric a hand signal when the starting gun fires. We also get into the nuts and bolts of coaching a bit, especially considering the length of Gregory’s season as he pursues an Olympic Trials Qualifier after running 45.73 to win nationals.

It was clear in our conversation with Gregory that he just loves racing track. Before attending Gallaudet, Eric had never left Louisiana, now three national championships later, he serves as a beacon of inspiration to the community he came from, along with the deaf community, for which is the 400m world record holder.

We talk about Eric’s willingness to take on a big training load to prepare for the triple at nationals this year, as well as what it’s like to be a part of the deepest sprint field D3 has ever seen.

Thanks to Eric, and Coach Moore for taking the time to sit down with us. Special thanks to the Gallaudet athletic department, and sign language interpreters who made this conversation possible.

Episode 76 - Macklin Chaffee23 Feb 202201:16:53

Macklin Chaffee’s running journey is centered around the question, “what if.”

In high school, his coach put him in three events to see what he would do well in: high jump, hurdles, and the 1600m. After a fast last lap to propel Chaffee to a 4:45 in his first 1600m race, it was clear Chaffee was a miler.

Chaffee’s motivation levels ebbed and flowed while he was at Williams College. To put it bluntly, he didn’t enjoy running which led to sub par training heading into three of his four cross country seasons. On top of the lack of training, he had interest in the ultimate frisbee club that left him wondering if pursuing that would make for a better college experience.

However, his sophomore year track season gave him the motivation he needed and began the “what if” theme of his career.  After having to step into the DMR as an alternate and getting into the mile after a medical scratch, Chaffee saw first hand what it’s like to be at the top of Division 3. However, a stint of mono that outdoor season left him dreaming for the next season.

That next track season he began to see more success by lowering his PB and finishing runner up in the 1500m. That second place finish gave him the motivation he needed to train over the season to help Williams during cross country. Despite an injury, he was able to muster up a 38th place finish to help Williams finish third on the podium.

His eyes were set on winning a national title during track but came up 0.09 seconds short. His coached convinced him to do a few races after the season which ended in him finished 32nd at the USA Outdoor National Champs. From there, he wanted to see how far he could take running.

While his ultimate goal of making the Olympics fell short, Macklin’s story is one of resiliency and of what you can do if you go all in. His professional career was filled with ups and down but he can say he is a 3:56 miler.

Episode 74 - Lilah Drafts-Johnson09 Feb 202201:06:00

We're welcoming Lilah Drafts-Johnson to the D3GD staff and what a better introduction than to know her D3 story. In high school, Lilah started out as a two-miler but shifted toward the 400mH and triple jump. While not completely understanding the recruiting process, Lilah sent in her track marks to boost her application to Oberlin College. The coaches reached out and she quickly realized joining the track team would make for a positive college experience.

Lilah spent a lot of her college career shifting her goals. She wanted to leave college as a sub 60 400m runner. She did that by indoors her freshman year. So, she set the bar higher to become a national champion.

She completed her final goal of becoming a national champion in the 400m Hurdles in her last track race ever. We explore the psychological makeup of shifting goals and what role track and field played in her college experience.

Lilah will be taking deeper dives into D3 Track and Field in her written work on d3glorydays.com

The Double - Broken Records and Converted Times featuring Marcus Weaver and Coach Linh Nguyen04 Feb 202201:00:11

For the second episode of the double, we sat down with Marcus Weaver to discuss his record breaking Heptathlon. We won't see him back in the Hep until Nationals but expect a big performance out of him in March.

After Marcus, we spoke to Coach Linh Nguyen from Emory on his transition back into D3. We also discussed ways to better standardize the time conversion that takes place every to reflect where the National meet is held. His idea calls for D3 to use a banked track as the standard so that way no matter where the National meet is held, times won't be converted slower. Let us know what you think.

Olympians, they’re just like us! If you need someone to cheer for this Winter Olympics, look no further than St. Olaf graduate, Jake Brown.

As a self proclaimed, ‘typical Minnesota distance athlete' Brown got his start in cross country skiing at a young age. His aerobic background from skiing made for a  natural transition into running world when he got to high school. However, wile at Princeton he was longing to ski in college. He transferred to St. Olaf in 2013 and was an instant impact for their cross country program. St. Olaf was retuning five guys from the previous year’s 14th place team. Adding Jake was the missing piece as they were able to take down North Central College by 2 points to take home the 2013 XC Team Title.

With eligibility left to ski, Brown went to Northern Michigan University for graduate school. He was able to compete on the Nordic ski team and that’s where it began to click for him with skiing. After being scouted at a Biathlon ID camp, Brown made his way to Vermont to train full time as a Biathlon athlete. Since then, he has gone to compete at 3 World Championships and was the 2019 US Biathlon Champ!

Episode 72 - Christina Welsh on How She Went From 3:29 to 2:33 in the Marathon25 Jan 202200:48:16

“After I ran 2:44, it would have been very easy to pick a reasonable goal time of 2:40 and then completely limit myself from 2:33, so I don't really like to set goal times.”

The Houston Marathon was a historic day for US distance running as the American record in both the marathon and half marathon were broken. As the celebrations began, Christina Welsh crossed the line in 8th place running 2:33:00 in her 6th marathon. A quick TFRRs search will tell you Christina was a 18:25/39:21 5k/10k runner out of Stockton University in New Jersey.

The other staggering fact you’ll find out about Christina is that she made her marathon debut in 3:29 and went into Houston with a 2:44 PB.

Her progression:

6/2019: 3:29:17 - Lake Placid Marathon

11/2019: 3:20:34 - NYC Marathon

11/2020: 3:03:58 - Space Coast Marathon

4/2021: 2:56:09 - Wilmington Marathon

6/2021: 2:44:35 - Grandma’s Marathon

1/2022: 2:33:00 - Houston Marathon

She credits these jumps to her love of running and low intensity/higher mileage training that she wasn’t able to have in college. At Stockton, she was in the training system with everyone else of higher intensity workouts and reduced mileage. As she continued running more mileage for each marathon buildup, her times dramatically fell.

Christina brings a unique perspective to elite marathoning. She isn’t glued to her watch in workouts or races. A race plan stresses her out as races typically don't follow the plan and doesn't account for the variability that can happen. You’ll see she enjoys going with the flow and joins everyone else that is excited to see what she does next because she isn’t even sure!

Episode 71 - Liz Kujawa (Woodworth)18 Jan 202201:12:41

One of the most decorated middle distance runners in D3 history almost stepped away from the sport. Liz Kujawa (Woodworth) went to UW-Oshkosh with the intentions to run and study Athletic Training. The AT major was demanding and the director of the program told her it would be difficult to run while being in the major. Her successful freshman year made her realize she could become something special in running and sought a major that would better align with her training schedule.

As her success piled up, she always wanted to make sure she was being a positive example for the other women on her team by leading by example. While she may not have been the most talkative on the team, she knew her success would be motivation for the rest of the team.

It was clear throughout her career that the team success meant more to her than her individual success. Winning the DMR title as a sophomore was one of her career highlights as she shared that moment with her teammates. As senior, she agreed to double at the National Championships because it meant giving her a team a chance to win and of course, they won.

What made Liz so good was her love for the sport. When a stress fracture kept her from her junior year cross country season, she realized the worst part of the injury was not running - the same thing she mentioned as her least favorite part of cross country and track. Her love grew overtime and she understood all the benefits running provided.

From this conversation, you’d never expect Liz to have walked away from Oshkosh as:

  • 7x National Champion (Six 800m Titles in a row, One 1500m)
  • 3x XC All American (2x Runner Up)
  • 2x National DMR Champion
  • 2x All American in Track
  • 1500m National Record Holder and 800m National Record Holder

Episode 70 - Sam Grotewold of NYRR11 Jan 202201:07:54

"I didn't realize at the time, but the chance Coach Ellingson gave me, it changed the trajectory of my entire life. I realize that more and more every year that I wouldn't be at NYRR today without that opportunity.”

Have you wondered how the fields at the NYC Marathon and Fifth Avenue Mile are put together? Sam Grotewold and his team are responsible for putting together the world-class of the events you love. It also happens that Sam went to a D3 college and wouldn’t be doing what is he today with the opportunity Coach Keith Ellingson gave him at Simpson College.

Sam chose his path to college without running influencing his decision. He had his mindset on going to Simpson College to study graphic design and journalism. It wasn’t until a meeting at orientation where the athletic director asked the incoming class if they were interested in doing a sport. Sam raised his hand and a few days later, Coach Ellingson called Sam to ask him to join the team.

While Sam didn’t go on to win National Titles or become an All-American, his opportunity to join the Simpson Cross Country team shaped his life and career trajectory.

After Sam graduated, he joined New York Road Runners as a web editor. As NYRR began to have professional races, he transitioned from his web editing role into the Professional Athletes space. Sam explains the process of filling the fields, memorable stories, and fills us in if Kipchoge will run NYC.

The impact of Sam’s D3 experience shaped his life into what it is today. He gives credit to Coach Ellingson for giving him an opportunity when he didn’t have to.

Episode 69 - Dylan Gearinger04 Jan 202201:20:28

“Even when running sucks and I'm not having any fun with it, I keep coming back to it. That keeps paying off because running, more than any other sport, rewards you for showing up every day and continuing to work hard.”

Welcome to 2022! We’re back with recent 2:14 Marathoner and Haverford grad, Dylan Gearinger. Like many runners, Dylan didn’t start out as a runner. He focused on football and baseball but a string of concussions from football forced Dylan to find a new athletic outlet.

He responded well to running as the team environment was friendlier than his football and baseball teams. Dylan began to see his potential in running as he became the top runner for his high school team his senior year.

A mysterious illness consumed Dylan’s life as he was unable to get a proper diagnosis of what was keeping him ill for extended periods. Once at Haverford, he was able to get treatment from UPenn which turned his health and running around. The restored health allowed him to train consistently and stack high mileage weeks together. By his junior year track season, the culmination of mileage paid off with an Indoor 3k National Title.

After a disappointing senior xc season and other personal reasons, Dylan left the team and ran unattached for both indoor and outdoor season. Under the Philly Runner Track Club, he ran 7:59.74, the unofficial #2 time in D3 History.

The high mileage college days made for an easy transition into the marathon. Dylan knew he would be a strong marathoner but never expected to bust out a 2:14 so early in his marathon career. Dylan was a Top 20 Marathoner in the US among all courses and tied for 10th on record eligible courses in 2021. Dylan will be the one to watch for in 2022 as he eyes the Chicago Marathon in the fall.

Dylan's story shows that a running career isn't a linear path and consistency pays off.

Episode 67 - Annie Rodenfels08 Dec 202100:56:48

Annie Rodenfels returns to D3 Glory Days after running 15:08.80 at BU this weekend - a World Standard! The original goal of the of Saturday was to pace the BYU women to 3k-4k. At 3k, she was feeling good and dropped back into the pack to see where the train would take her. A 30 second last lap propelled her to win the race of her life. She is now 12th All-Time on the US Women’s indoor 5k list. The best stat of all, she is now the fastest Woman to run a 5k out of D3.

Annie recently joined the BAA after training with Greenville Track Club. This is the first time in her life she has female training partners and she is absolutely loving it. As she continues to bet on herself, she is excited to be training with Erika Kemp and Abbey Wheeler who will continue to push her each day.

We go into how the race played out, what her transition to the BAA has been like, and how she is handling this transforming race.

If you want to hear her origin story, go back to Episode 2!

Episode 66 - Kassie Parker24 Nov 202100:59:25

Both National Champs in the same week? Kassie Parker won the 2021 Women’s Individual National Title on Saturday by running a D3 Course record down in Louisville. Kassie made her way to the front of the race from the start and never looked back. She was joined by Evie Miller for about 3k, which was the longest she had someone trailing her in a D3 race. While it wasn’t the time she wanted to run that day, she’ll be back next year to take a stab at sub 20:00 for the 6k.  Even after the victory, Kassie mentions it wasn’t the best executed race and that leaves her excited for another attempt. This was Kassie’s second time on D3 Glory Days as she was on the Track Contenders episode last spring. In Today’s episode, we go back to learn how a 5:25 1500m high school runner became a 2x National Champion.

Kassie found herself at a big state school, University of Iowa, running on their club team and wanting to be better at running. Her HS PBs of 5:25 (1500), 11:39 (3000), and 20:20 didn’t get her much attention from around Iowa. Yet, her past visit to Loras kept coming back up. As she decided she would transfer to Loras, she took a look at the D3 Record book and decided that she was going to break a D3 National Record. She’s unsure of where this confidence comes from, but attributes it to thinking nothing is impossible to accomplish.

Once at Loras, she took the training well and began dropping big PRs. The reality of what she was accomplishing so quickly didn’t set in as she thought it was normal to have 1+ minute PRs during the season. With these new PRs, she was ready to take on her first collegiate cross country season. She wasn’t afraid to mix up in the front pack and would find herself in the Top 5 at most races. She ended that season as 31st, earning her first All-America award.

Kassie is a unique National Champion as she spends her weeks running 5 days a week and cross-training the other two. Her background in Triathlons helps her while she cross-trains but is a big catalyst in keeping herself healthy.

Kassie confirms she will be using her remaining eligibility (1 XC season, 1 Indoor, 2 Outdoor) at Loras as a Graduate student. We’re not sure D3 was ready to hear that news.

Thank you goodr

Episode 65 - Alex Phillip23 Nov 202100:59:39

Today on D3 Glory Days, we’re joined by the 2021 Men’s Individual Champion, Alex Phillip. The 2021 Champion made his initial move around the 5k mark to try to break open the field. Down the home stretch, Alex responded to a late kick from Elias Lindgren and overtook him with 100m remaining. Pure jubilation took over as Alex began to celebrate before the line as he pumped both his arms as he crossed. He didn’t have to wait long to hear that his team, John Carroll, had placed on the podium by finishing 4th. This was their first trophy in program history, completing the sweep of firsts (conference championship, regional championship) during the season. Alex has been D3 Glory Days twice before. Once on YouTube and most recently, on the Contenders Episode. We know Alex for who he is today, so in this episode, we take a step back to figure out how Alex became the 2021 XC National Champion.

Alex started his high school career with a hot start. Running 4:35, 10:00, and 16:10 his freshman year, he had eyes set on becoming a great high school runner. However, the team loved ultimate frisbee and threw the disc around more than the miles they ran, resulting in a regression for Alex over the next two years. His senior year, he realized he wanted to run in college and began taking running a little more seriously. He reduced his long-time PRs down to 4:28,  9:40, and 16:00. Yet, he wasn’t getting many looks from college coaches. The head coach of John Carroll, Kyle Basista, kept calling and kept sharing his vision for what John Carroll could become. Alex committed to John Carroll but wasn’t entirely sold on running. He was debating whether to go to Akron to be a normal student or commit 100% to running at JCU. He chose the latter and slowly built his mileage up.

When Alex commits to something, he goes all in. He trained super hard over the season running himself into the ground on most runs. Despite this tactic, he credits his big jumps his freshman year to it. He went on to finish 15th as a freshman as John Carroll made the national meet for the first time in school history. He and his teammates knew the next time they would be at the National Meet, something special would happen.

Alex took advantage of the non-racing schedule during COVID to increase his mileage, train consistently and pay attention to the small things. This resulted in a 5th place finish at the 2021 Outdoor National 10k and a Runner-Up in the 5k. While they were the results he had hoped, he left him wanting more heading into this cross country season.

Alex will be running a 5k up at Grand Valley State in 10 days and has eyes on Dan Mayer’s indoor 5k record of 13:53. When it comes to outdoors, he hopes to nab both the 5k and 10k records as well. With the determination and work ethic Alex shows, don’t be surprised if he finishes the season with multiple D3 Records.

Episode 61 - David Cooper25 Oct 202101:01:57

David Cooper began running after an injury took him out of wrestling. He quickly converted his competitive spirit from the mats to the track. Running came naturally to him while he would cut weight in wrestling and after he had quick success during his junior year of high school, he wanted to see how far he could take running.

On his campus visit to Mount Union, his conversation with legendary coach John Homon and the atmosphere on campus had him hooked. Add in his experience from the Army and David was prepared to take on the college transition.

His first semester on campus was used to get him back in shape while training with some of the top guys in the country. His confidence spiked as he knew he could go to well every Tuesday with these guys. This resulted in his first OAC XC title as a freshman and he would ultimately not give up that title.

He suffered a major setback as a sophomore when he finished 169th at the national meet. At that point, he was a 2x OAC champ, 1x AA and felt prepared to be in the Top 10. He used the feeling of disappointment to fuel the rest of his career. After that meet, he would leave a national meet as either an All American or a National Champion.

When David hung up his spike, he left Mount Union as a 3x XC All American, 4x OAC XC Champ, and 7x National Champion with 4 other All American performances in track. He credits this success to the fear of losing. When he started to win National Titles, he knew he had a target on his back and was motivated to not give his title up.

Quotes

On the impact from his team:

“I always try to circle back to the team that I joined because I wouldn't be talking to you guys today if it wasn't for the team of freshmen that I came in with.”

On the Impact of training and racing:

And so for me, it was more or less just knowing that if you're doing the work [it’ll pay off].  We used to say this all the time,  you're doing the work during the week and you're collecting your paycheck on the weekend.”

On Finishing 169th as a Sophomore:

“I remember thinking, like, hold on to this moment for training. Hold on to this moment as I go into future races because this is exactly why you train for these things to not happen.

On his training Senior Year:

“If I came out of practice on a Tuesday and I didn't have crutches, then it wasn't a good practice.”

Advice for the Post Season:

You have to go into these races with that chip on your shoulder, being convinced that nobody can beat you or be better than you on that particular day. You have four big races like that in a career right for nationals, it's all you get. So it's time to go out there and collect your paycheck.”

Episode 58 - Simon Heys and Evie Bultemeyer (Pre Nats Champs)05 Oct 202100:36:46

This past weekend was a big weekend for D3 Cross Country. Teams are starting to show their true colors and individuals are beginning to have break out races. Tom Sawyer Park played host to the D3 Pre National Meet to give teams and athletes a preview of what’s to come in November. We mentioned this in last week’s episode that the real season is beginning. Simon Heys and Evie Bultemeyer came away with the individual titles. Both had similar race strategies as they hung out in the pack, matched every move, and waited until it was time to make their own move.

Evie is familiar with these big races. She is a 4x All American in Track and in 2019 placed 8th at Cross Country Nationals - yet still sees this as a big win for her career. This seas is different for her as she is off campus getting her Master’s Degree and doesn’t have the luxury of being around her teammates. However, the power of FaceTime has allow Evie to stay close with her team during this time. She’s up to her highest mileage ever and is getting excited for the end of the year meets and hopes to help her team qualify for the National Meet.

Simon calls this the biggest win of his career. He’s fresh off his first National Meet last spring in the 10k and is hungry to improve upon his 13th place finish. He gets fired up about how strong his conference (OAC) is and how that competition will prepare him for the National meet. With this win, he’s beginning to view himself a little differently as a runner and is adjusting his already big goals.

This was a great conversation to get insight into their races and hear from current student-athletes. Want more information from this weekend, read our Meet Recap article by Emily Richards.

Episode 56 - Sean Carlson22 Sep 202101:02:35

“My job is to protect what we already have and what I sold the guys in our locker room. If I go and recruit a kid that wants a lifestyle that's completely opposite of that, I'm doing those guys in the locker room and injustice because I'm bringing in a poison.”

Sean Carlson’s approach to coaching comes from the fear of being out worked and not being good. He had this mentality at North Central College running 120 mile weeks as a Sophomore which led to a team finish of 16th place. His perspective of what constitutes hard worked was shaped during his time at North Central when that 16th place team eventually won the National Title 2 years later. He has followed a similar trajectory leading the Notre Dame Cross Country team from a 14th place regional finish to a National Runner Up in 5 years.

Sean knew he wanted to be a Coach but having daily wisdom from Al Carius was a helpful catalyst to know he was heading in the right direction. Coach Carlson credits the rise of the Notre Dame distance team to a strong team culture, which he learned from Al Carius. Sean has worked tirelessly to get the team to be at a point where they are doing all the small things correctly, and are running at Notre Dame for the right reasons. He has even gone to recruited kids that would be a better fit for the team, rather than take the fastest kid available.

We mentioned the documentary, ‘16 2 1’ in our conversation with Al. It’s a documentary made by @NCCMensXCTF alumnus, RJ McNichols. It highlights the rise and fall from 2005-2011. He’s offering our listeners 50% off if you follow this link: https://vimeo.com/r/2Tcn/WHJqaGw0WG

Episode 54 - Carmen Graves07 Sep 202101:05:55

Carmen went to Roanoke College with the intention to play soccer as that was the sport she was recruited for. She eventually joined the track team after being asked by the coach. As a naturally talented athlete, Carmen was able to pick up new events quickly. While she was a pure track runner, her fall soccer conditioning helped her get into fitness for the track season. Slowly but surely her coaches kept adding to her training and she found her speciality was in the 800.

Carmen quickly rose to the national level in the 800 with qualifying for the 800 her Sophomore year. Unfortunately, she finished the dreaded 9th, meaning she was the first one out of the final. This proved to be her motivation as she never missed another 800m final after that.

Her senior year, she wanted to break school records and eventually tried the Steeplechase. Her coach saw her naturally ability shine through but was put on the back burner as the focus was still the 800.

After college, Carmen pursued running as she wanted to keep the dream alive. She so quick success in both the 5k and Steeple. She brought her 5k PR down to 16:09 and her Steeple to 9:49.

Her love/hate relationship with running has taken out and brought her back into the sport many times. The latest is when the Pandemic hit, she decided to give running another shot. She ended up qualifying for the Trials this year. A similar story to college, she was the first one out of the final. As looks to the big meets coming up, Carmen has a great outlook on running and a nice shiny new PR of a 9:41 Steeple.

Episode 53 - 2021 Regional Realignment31 Aug 202100:49:29

On July 8th, D3 XC went under a regional realignment from 8 regions to 10 regions. It came as a surprise to some and an “Oh yeah” to others as this was voted on in the 2019 Coaches Convention. Some regions stayed the same, while others were completely changed. The Wisconsin schools will face off against the Minnesota schools, colleges in New York and Massachusetts will be split amongst different regions. These changes were made to create equal field sizes as some regions would be north of 50 teams while others would barely get to 20.

More information on the realignment

The biggest change will be the 1 Automatic Qualifying spot. In years past, it’s been 2 with 16 At-Large Bids. Now, there will be 10 Auto Spots and 22 At-Large Bids, giving a lot of responsibility to the selection committee. Jordan Carpenter  comes back on to discuss these changes and what went on behind the scenes when creating this realignment. Cassie Funke-Harris, Head XC Coach at Amherst College, and Jeff Stiles, Head XC Coach at Wash U, share their thoughts on the realignment and how it may affect their programs.

Stay tuned for our rankings!

Episode 52 - Jack Pinho24 Aug 202101:12:48

"I wasn't supposed to be doing this (running) and now it's all I can do. It's what makes it fun for me to train for something and knowing it's worth it"

Thank you to Under Armour All Out Mile for partnering with us! You can learn more and register for the CITIUS Mag team here: www.uaalloutmile.com.

Jack Pinho was a 3 sport athlete in high school with an emphasis in Football and Basketball. Track was a secondary sport as baseball was too slow for him. As he went off to Springfield College for their PE/Education program, he had plans to only be a student. As time wore on, the feeling of not having competition took over and he ventured over to the Track Captains’ practices. He quickly became invested in the team and want to join them.

Jack had PBs of what most D3 Coaches would want coming out of high school: 2:00/4:30. Yet Jack was unsure on how he’d fair on the team. His hard work mentality showed him success early on as he consistently broke 2 in the 800.

An ultimatum was the force behind joining cross country led him to losing his nickname of ‘Fake Distance.’ Jack continued to improve while working hard. He lowered his 800m PB down to 1:53 and was on the cusp of making it to Nationals.

As a walk-on at the D3 Level, Jack didn’t expect to have the success that he had. He began focusing on the mile for his senior year and came away with a 4:07PB and a 4th place finish at the National Meet. From there, he knew he had to repeat that success but it would come down to the final last chance qualifier at Swarthmore. A 3:47 PB would get him qualified for the Outdoor National meet but his qualifying time placed him 6th in the nation.

Jack chalked it up to his training that led him to a senior year All-American performance. Despite a heatstroke in the prelim, Jack recovered enough to repeat his 4th place performance.

With 2 season of eligibility left, Jack continued at Springfield to continue to lower his mile PB. Unfortunately, that fell short but gave him the fire of keep competing after college.

Jack has lowered his mile PB to 4:03 and is continuing to hunt for that sub 4 attempt. For a kid who wasn’t supposed to continue running, he has a quintessential D3 Story.

Episode 51 - Elias Lindgren and Aidan Ryan17 Aug 202100:33:56

“We want to say we’re good runners without the asterisks of good for D3.”

D3 Glory Days is back for Season 3. And with a new partner! We’re partnering with Under Armour All Out Mile to bring you an epic mile race this fall.

Kicking off the new season we’re joined by Elias Lindgren and Aidan Ryan from Williams College. Aidan is a repeat guest but earned the right of passage to return to D3 Glory Days as he became the unofficial #2 5k of All Time in D3. His teammate Elias, is the unofficial #4 5k of All Time.

When Covid cancelled their XC season, they made the decision to take the full year off to focus on running. Aidan, as you recall, went to Boulder in the fall and convinced Elias to join him in the spring. While training with Noah’s team, Roots Running Project, they were able to run massive 5k PBs in the process

We go into what they learned in their time away from Williamstown, MA, what they’re looking forward to this fall, and how they won’t put as much emphasis of winning a national title like they did in 2019.
