Impact on Optimism Episode 2 - growthepie - Scaling Ethereum L2s and The Superchain as a Positive Sum Game
27 Aug 2024
00:45:51
For today’s episode we’re excited to return to the Impact on Optimism Series for the second episode! In this series, we highlight gamechanging public goods projects in the Optimism Ecosystem, and today, we have a super interesting conversation in store centered around the Ethereum Layer 2 ecosystem.
For episode 2 of the Impact on Optimism miniseries, we’re excited to welcome Tobias Schreier, Co-Founder of growthepie, a Layer 2 fundamentals and blockspace analytics platform on a mission to help scale Ethereum! We dive into the complex Ethereum L2 ecosystem, the exciting momentum around the Superchain, the Web3 public goods funding ecosystem, Optimism’s RetroPGF program, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
The L2 ecosystem is rapidly evolving, with new L2s launching on a regular basis. Given the complexity of the L2 ecosystem, and the various use cases of L2s, it can be difficult to stay up to date and understand the L2 ecosystem, especially for those that are new to Web3. As such, it’s important to have open, accessible, and transparent metrics and analytics to help navigate this complex landscape.
There are several metrics that can be helpful in evaluating the sustainability of L2s and which one to build or transact on. These include the cost per transaction, the stablecoin market cap on the L2, chain profitability, and the types of activity (i.e. DeFi, NFT sales) that are most prominent on the chain.
The Superchain is a network of layer 2 blockchains that are built on the open source OP stack. This allows builders to launch their own chain, giving them the freedom to optimize for their use case while still keeping consistency and connection between the different chains. Participants in the superchain get the benefits of the OP stack as it pertains to security, bridging, and updates from the OP Collective.

Episode 168 - The Wellbeing Protocol - Scaling Localism with Web3 and Hyper Local DAOs
20 Aug 2024
00:38:05
In episode 168, we’re excited to welcome Mark Pascall, Co-Founder of The Wellbeing Protocol, an organization on a mission to build a world where local communities are empowered to support their own wellbeing. We discuss how their participatory grantmaking tool is giving communities the power to allocate capital, the role of quadratic and conviction voting mechanisms, the future of hyper local DAOs, why Web3 is a powerful tool to scale localism, and much more!
One of the best ways to reallocate power from large corporations and institutions to local communities is by bringing communities onchain as local DAOs. This gives communities a mechanism to allocate capital, make decisions, and coordinate to limit the power of large institutions.
Conviction Voting is a coordination tool that allows communities to collectively govern shared resources. In this system, individuals can vote over a period of time, and are able to change their vote at anytime. However, as long as an individual doesn’t change their vote after it has been casted, it is a signal that you have strong conviction, and the power of your vote grows.
In addition to the value of putting local community organizations onchain, one of the other benefits of web3 is all the open-source experimentation happening in the space. Since web3 is so new, it gives communities an opportunity to experiment at the ground level with new mechanisms for coordination and governance.

Episode 160 - CryptoConexión & WAGMI LatAm - Catalyzing the Next Generation of Web3 Innovators in Latin America
18 Jun 2024
00:33:26
In episode 160, we’re excited to welcome Monica Talan of CryptoConexión and WAGMI LatAm, two incredible projects focused on catalyzing the Web3 movement in Latin America. We discuss why Latin America has been such an exciting hub for innovation, how Web3 can create economic and social inclusion in the region, some of the most exciting projects coming out of Latin America, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
One of the biggest barriers to accessing Web3 for non-English speakers in a lack of resources and educational materials in their language. The importance of this cannot be understated, so it’s vital that education and onboarding projects (including Crypto Altruism) work to offer their content in multiple languages.
Hackathons are an incredible tool for catalyzing innovation, however they have traditionally been focused on the development of software. There can be a lot of value in expanding the concept and culture of hackathons to other disciplines including education, international development, public goods, etc., to ensure diverse individuals can benefit from hackathons.
A combination of great leaders, a focus on the ethos of Web3, projects centered around accessibility and social impact, and a pre-existing foundation of innovation make Latin America a great place for building and experimenting in Web3.

Episode 71 - RemittDAO - Crypto, the future of remittances, and inclusion for the unbanked
26 Sep 2022
00:40:39
For Episode 71, we’re excited to welcome Craig Schuster, Founder of RemittDAO, a social impact DAO focused on building wealth in migrant & refugee families, worldwide. They do this through teaching web3 skills & enabling digital remittance payments; especially for those who are unbanked. In this episode we discuss how crypto can build a fairer remittance system for migrant workers and those who are unbanked, their plan to provide web3 and digital remittance education to migrant communities, how crypto and web3 can lead to financial inclusion for the unbanked, and much more.
The remittance system is broken, and those who are most vulnerable, such as refugees, migrant workers, and the unbanked, are paying the price with high fees and interest rates.
The tools exist to fix the remittance system with cryptocurrency. However, we can’t go by an “if we build it, they will come” approach. Coordinated education is needed to make sure those who need these tools most have the support and onboarding to make use of them.
A community-driven approach is needed to implement web3 solutions in vulnerable populations. These solutions must be locally-driven, with the local communities having ownership over the project.

Episode 70 - Console - Building a web3 platform for community action
19 Sep 2022
00:35:32
For Episode 70, we’re excited to welcome Chris Castiglione, Co-Founder of Console, a web3 alternative to Discord, and crypto-native platform for web3 communities to focus and take action. Chris is an experienced tech leader, is a Y Combinator alumni, and left his web2 company to start building in the exciting new world of web3. In this episode, we discuss why they’re building a web3 alternative to Discord, why this matters, how their platform gives web3 communities like DAOs the tools to take action and drive change, the future of decentralized identity, and much more.
In web2, you may have heard the motto “don’t be evil,” whereas in web3, it is possible to build a system where one “can’t be evil,” by putting in place decentralized structures and trustless accountability models.
Cryptocurrency gave people ownership over their money, and web3 platforms can give individuals ownership over their identity.
Open source is the future. Building decentralized open-source alternatives to traditional web2 platforms will help build a more collaborative and fairer internet.

Episode 66 - DeSci Labs - Rebuilding the backend of science with web3
22 Aug 2022
00:44:18
For Ep. 66, we continue our exciting journey into the world of Decentralized Science, or DeSci. We welcome Erik van Winkle and Jon Starr from DeSci Labs, a decentralized scientific ecosystem using web3 to empower scientists and rebuild the backend of science. We discuss some of the current pain points being faced by scientists, how science is in a crisis, and how DeSci Labs is looking to resolve this by using web3 to rebuild the backend of science.
Three Key Takeaways
Web3 shifts the balance of power in science away from scientific journals and large centralized bodies to scientists themselves, ensuring that they are fairly compensated for their work.
DeSci provides exciting opportunities to onboard talented individuals to web3 including scientists and researchers, who otherwise may have not felt compelled to engage with the space.
Science has been built around the same processes and technology for decades. Web3 will develop a more modern and decentralized scientific ecosystem that is accessible and empowering to the next generation of scientists.

Episode 63 - 400 Drums - Building an Indigenous-led web3 ecosystem
08 Aug 2022
00:50:31
In Episode 63, we have the privilege of welcoming back the team from 400 Drums, a movement dedicated to supporting Indigenous artists, elders, language speakers and tour operators to harness new online platforms, such as NFTs and web3, to monetize their skills while sharing their teachings and stories. We discuss how they are using NFTs to empower Indigenous communities, the amazing artistic process behind their 444 NFT series, their plans to build an Indigenous web3 ecosystem and more!
Today we welcome four members of the 400 Drums team. First is Tamara Goddard, the Founder, Project Lead, and Graphic Artist behind 400 Drums. Next, we have Rian Bevan, who is one of the Founders and the Innovation Lead for 400 Drums. Next we have the Public Relations Manager, Chris Nelson. And finally, we welcome their web3 specialist, Branden Dame.
Three Key Takeaways
NFTs present unique opportunities to build bridges between the digital and physical. 400 Drums does this by turning beautiful, handcrafted Indigenous drums into an NFT that honors the physical art, while preserving it on an immutable blockchain.
When building a strong community around an NFT project, it’s all about personal relationships, and building a strong core community, as opposed to trying to just reach the masses.
400 Drums has an ambitious roadmap where the 444 act as a foundation for an Indigenous-led web3 ecosystem including additional NFT collections, DApps, community events and giveaways, and much more.

In Episode 62, we welcome Nadja Bester, Founder of AdLunam, a community-driven crypto investment and startup accelerator platform. AdLunam was founded by experienced blockchain entrepreneurs who have worked with over 200 firms in managerial and consulting roles, ranging from tokenomics to marketing and communications. AdLunam's Engage to Earn investment model democratizes crypto investing, and their Proof of Attention mechanism has been built in response to the challenges of the Web3 Attention Economy. In today’s episode, we discuss the need to democratize early stage crypto projects, how AdLunam is creating a more inclusive and accessible space for retail investors, AdLunam’s unique Engage to Earn Proof of Attention mechanism, and advice for those looking to break into the world of web3.
Our guest today, Nadja Bester, has over 16 years of marketing & communications expertise as an Agency Director, and a Digital Marketing Executive for a multi-billion-dollar pharma company. She has been a crypto journalist for publications such as Bitcoin.com and Investing.com, a blockchain industry speaker, advisor, and consultant, and a female founder in the crypto industry. Nadja has been profiled on a number of publications including Benzinga and Hackernoon.
3 Key Takeaways
Traditionally, early-stage investing has been reserved to high net-worth individuals. There is a need to create a system that is accessible to everyone, regardless of financial standing.
AdLunam rewards users on their platform for their engagement through their Engage to Earn Proof of Attention mechanism. Think the “Reddit of IDO launchpads” – where users who conduct research and engage around a project are rewarded with “points” which enable them to receive allocation.
We have an opportunity to learn from the inequities of the traditional financial system and build a more fair and inclusive system through crypto. However, it’s important to not fall into the same errors of the traditional system.

Episode 158 - Treegens - Decentralized, Permissionless Tree Planting with World Record Tree Planter Jimi Cohen
05 Jun 2024
00:53:42
In episode 158, we’re excited to welcome Jimi Cohen, Founder of Treegens, a community on a mission to build a world where anyone can plant trees & get rewarded. Another fun fact about Jimi, is that he recently set a Guiness World Record for most trees planted in 24 hours by a single individual, with over 30,000! In our chat we discuss how Web3 can help coordinate tree planters all over the world to plant hundred of millions of trees, how blockchain can improve monitoring, reporting, and verification in tree planting efforts, growing the regen movement, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
Mangroves absorb about 8-10x more carbon from the atmosphere than old terrestrial forests and are efficient to plant, making than an ideal fit for tree planting and decarbonizing efforts. This is why Treegens has primarily focused on mangrove trees for their tree planting efforts, including Jimi’s Guiness World Record attempt.
Decentralized, permissionless tree planting is much more scalable than centralized tree planting, as anyone can support it, and anyone can be rewarded. In one of the communities Jimi has worked in, some of the locals are paid two days a year to plant trees, or simply volunteer their time. Platforms like Treegens, leveraging Web3 primitives, can create an environment where these individuals can turn tree planting into a full-time job where they are consistently rewarded for their efforts.
If an individual’s first experience with Web3 is being rewarded and receiving crypto for positive impact, it can be a very powerful tool for onboarding individuals and communities to Web3.

In web3 it’s all about community and collaboration. We have an amazing opportunity to learn from the mistakes of web2 and create the most inclusive web3 possible, and it all starts with collaboration. The Pride With A Purpose campaign is a great example of how collaboration can drive change.

NFTs are more than just an image file. There is a lot of utility that non-profits can make use of to engage audiences and raise funds.
Non-profits are beginning to capitalize on decentralized governance models, such as DAOs, to govern their organizations.
Crypto is where the money is. It presents new opportunities to raise funds and reach new audiences.

06 Jun 2022
00:46:33
In Episode 54, we welcome Ediz Basol and Brett Memsic, Co-Founders of Etched NFT, a platform dedicated to harnessing the power and innovation of web3 to sustainably support charity in the metaverse. Etched has launched charitable NFTs in collaboration with athletes and non-profits, and to-date, have raised over $120,000 for various non-profits. In May, they launched their own PFP collection titled the Prosocialites. The Prosocialites are a collection of 7,000 vibrant and diverse NFTs living on the Ethereum blockchain. They are symbols for optimism. Bold, independent voices who believe in how extraordinary our digital lives can become. We discuss the power of NFTs and web3 to bring philanthropy and social impact into the metaverse, and what the web3-social impact ecosystem might look like in the future.
Five Key Takeaways
NFTs are the ultimate community building tool for non-profits. They create new and accessible ways to engage donors.
PFPs have always been a way for individuals to show their support for causes. NFTs help take this to the next level by serving as proof of participation in a movement or cause.
There needs to be more emphasis on building better narratives around the space, so non-profits feel more comfortable engaging.
NFTs will help build longer term support for causes by building communities around movements – helping drive a shift from slacktivism to activism and engagement.
Web3 is changing very quickly – it’s important for organizations, especially non-profits, to stay agile so they can keep up.

Episode 53 - Crowd Funded Cures - DeSci and the decentralization of public good medicines
30 May 2022
00:42:53
In Episode 53, we’re thrilled to be joined by Savva Kerdemelidis and Nicholas Fiorenza from Crowd Funded Cures, a web3 project with a mission to launch a DeSci crowdfunding platform to incentivise the discovery of new uses for off-patent drugs, plant medicines, nutraceuticals and other unmonopolisable therapies without reliance on patents by using IP-NFTs, Pay-for-Success (PFS) contracts, and the issue of Public Good Medical Prize NFTs. Sound complicated? Don’t worry, they do a great job of breaking it down in this episode as we discuss the role web3 can play in funding medical research and development, IPNFTs, and the amazing potential in the DeSci movement.
Five Key Takeaways
DeSci provides new opportunities to engage individuals and communities in scientific research and development, and to create a more collaborative and open-source space.
IPNFTs allow for the fractionalization of ownership in early-stage biopharma projects and research, providing greater access to liquidity for researchers.
Pay-for-success models help incentivize research into new uses for off-patent medicines without the traditional risks.
IP NFTs and pay-for-success models will allow for greater research into medicines and therapies that have traditionally been ignored due to a lack of profitability.
Blockchain alone won’t solve the issues plaguing scientific research and development, but it will make solving them a lot easier.

There is a lot of virtue signaling in the web3 space. It is important to seek out projects where social impact is core to the mission, and not just an after thought.

Episode 157 - Leveraging NFTs to advance elephant welfare in Thailand
28 May 2024
00:30:58
In episode 157, we’re excited to welcome Daniel Villota, Founder of Unchained Elephants, a community leveraging Web3 technology to promote elephant welfare in Thailand, and to rescue elephants enduring cruel treatment. We discuss some of the challenges facing elephants in the tourism industry in Thailand, how they’re leveraging NFTs to create a community dedicated to elephant welfare, how they raised almost $50,000 to support elephant welfare, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
In Thailand, there is a large industry built around elephant tourism. Unfortunately, many of the providers engage in unethical and inhumane treatment of their animals. As such, it’s important to work together with NGOs and local authorities to educate tourists and community members, and to build a system centered around sanctuaries and ethical tourism.
NFTs can be a valuable tool for connecting community members to causes they care about. In addition to giving donors a cool memento for their donation, NFTs can also give community members certain benefits like access to a token-gated community and regular updates on the impact of their donation, helping them feel more connected to the cause.
Whether it’s humanitarian aid, or donating to causes on the other side of the world, crypto can help make philanthropy much more efficient by cutting out unnecessary intermediaries and the fees that come with them, ensuring more money goes directly to the cause.

For the 50th episode, we are excited to welcome Ian Chong, CEO and Co-Founder of OSbiome and Ome NFTs, a project dedicated to using web3 and NFTs to encourage healthier living, and to save 1.5 million lives every year.
Ian, alongside his partner Dr Maria, the Chief Technology Office and an award winning & published scientist in the microbiome space, they cofounded OSbiome & Ome NFTs to help make health accessible to everyone. Ome NFT by OSbiome is the world's first Health-to-Earn OG NFT collection. It's a collection of 1,000 unique 3D Omes, which act as your own personal virtual pet on the blockchain. By interacting with it and acting on simple health quests, owners can earn tokens and be rewarded for simply being healthy.
Five Key Takeaways
NFTs, fused with a play-to-earn approach, can help incentivize users to engage in healthy behaviors, and get rewarded for doing so.
Web3, by helping decentralize health data, can make health care more accessible for all.
Millions of lives are lost each year to conditions that can be improved with diet and lifestyle changes. Tokens can be a unique way to encourage healthy activities which can ultimately save lives.
Successful NFT projects, especially those that follow a play-to-earn model, need to be driven by the community and responsive to community needs.
Organizations that started as non-web3 companies, can find innovative ways to make use of web3 tools to advance their mission and make it more accessible to all.

Episode 48 - DeFi, ReFi, and DeSci
02 May 2022
00:12:28
In this episode, we highlight three movements within web3 that have experienced incredible growth in recent years: Decentralized Finance (DeFi), Regenerative Finance (ReFi), and Decentralized Science (DeSci).
Reflecting back on the start of 2022, it is clear that the broader movement of decentralization has gained incredible momentum as we’ve seen the launch of dozens, if not hundreds, of social impact DAOs and NFT projects, and the exponential growth of decentralized philanthropy. Decentralization is a core aspect of DeFi, ReFi, and DeSci as well – in that they seek to use decentralization, and the power of community, to address complex challenges that legacy systems simply haven’t been able to address.
In this episode we give a brief introduction to each of these movements, and some of the projects and organizations that are leading the way.

Episode 42 - The good vs. the bad – Evaluating web3 projects and avoiding scams
11 Apr 2022
00:11:04
Unfortunately there are a lot of scams in the web3 space. The projects doing real good far outweigh these scams, of course, but this doesn’t take away from the importance of being able to recognize bad actors in the space. In this episode, we discuss what you should look for when evaluating potential partners and projects in web3, and some red flags that could indicate that a project is a scam.
The questions to ask yourself when evaluating a project?
Is there a solid whitepaper or guiding documentation for the project?
Who are the developers? Are they doxed?
Who is the project partnering with or supported by?
How long has the project been around?
What sort of social media activity is there around the project?
Is there a solid, well researched value proposition behind the project?
It’s important to note that there is no, 100%, catch-all formula when it comes to evaluating projects, and every project needs to be evaluated on it’s own merits. Please be careful when evaluating projects, and make sure to take an individualized approach to evaluating each project.

Episode 156 - Kyoto - Leveraging DePIN to build a carbon negative, planet positive blockchain
21 May 2024
00:32:24
In episode 156, we’re excited to welcome Ashton Hunt, Co-Founder of Kyoto, a Carbon Negative blockchain built to scale the voluntary carbon market and regenerative finance by harnessing the power of Web3. We dive into the world of Decentralized Physical Infrastructure (Aka DePIN), the tokenization of real-world assets in support of climate solutions, leveraging blockchain to bring integrity to carbon markets, how they planted over one million trees in support of their efforts to become carbon negative, and much more!
--Three Key Takeaways--
To date, Kyoto has planted over one million trees and is aiming to decentralize tree planting efforts by making their technology available to local tree planters. This will help individuals and organizations monetize their tree planting efforts, bringing positive economic benefits to local communities.
Carbon markets have faced a lot of challenges lately, mostly due to a lack of transparency and traceability around carbon credits. Blockchain can help address this by bringing the assets on-chain, which will increase transparency, produce an immutable record of each credit’s provenance, and make them more accessible to the end user.
DePIN can be seen as an evolution of DeFi, in that it utilizes the same principles of decentralization and accessibility, while expanding these principles to broader use cases beyond finance including decentralized data networks, energy grids, or carbon markets.

Episode 40 - Blockchain and a world without intermediaries - a social impact perspective
04 Apr 2022
00:12:56
In this episode, we dive into one of the most profound and powerful social impact implications of blockchain and web3, the ability to remove intermediaries or "middlemen" from the equation.
One of the biggest benefits for humanity, that will be ushered in by blockchain, is the role it will play in helping cut out the middle man, or intermediary organizations, that have traditionally funnelled money away from the average individual and put it in the hands of the already wealthy.
Inherent in the web3 space is the value of decentralization, and by helping take power away from the centre, and redistributing it to the periphery, blockchain will usher in greater equity and inclusion for traditionally underserved populations.
To drive this point, there are three specific areas we discuss in this episode, of how blockchain can eliminate these intermediaries, resulting in greater equity and empowerment for the average person:
1. Financial Inclusion 2. NFTs 3. Disrupting the service sector

Episode 39 - AntidoteDAO - Decentralized funding of cancer research and charitable initiatives
31 Mar 2022
00:24:19
In this episode, we’re excited to welcome Niko Katsuyoshi, Founder of AntidoteDAO, a Decentralized Autonomous organization dedicated to funding cancer research and charitable initiatives. We discuss how they are looking to bring greater transparency to medical research & grantmaking, how they are raising funds via crypto and NFTs for cancer research, and the long term vision for the DAO.
About AntidoteDAO
AntidoteDAO (originally Cancer Coin) was created by Niko Katsuyoshi in late 2021 to take advantage of the developments in crypto/blockchain technology and aid developments in curing different cancers. Having lost countless family members to the terrible disease, he wanted to be able to do something to help for once. Originally launching Cancer Coin on the BSC Network, he quickly came to realize he needed to increase community trust. By moving to the ETH Network and also creating a DAO, the project would be able to become community-controlled and fund different cancer initiatives directly.
