Marjorie Rusche and Clare Longendyke: Bringing a Composition to Life05 Mar 202600:32:15

In the world of classical music, the collaboration between composers and performers often leads to remarkable creations that resonate deeply with audiences. In this episode of Crushing Classical, host Jennet Ingle engages in a captivating conversation with composer Marjorie Rusche and pianist Clare Longendyke about the upcoming premiere of Rusche's Eclipse Piano Concerto, with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra on March 15 2026.

Marjorie M. Rusche is an internationally performed award winning composer who combines romantic, modernist, and vernacular influences in her music. Dr. Rusche composes for opera, music theater, orchestra, chorus, dance, soloists, and a variety of vocal and instrumental chamber ensembles.

Pianist Clare Longendyke is a soloist, chamber musician, and fearless advocate for new music who brings daring repertoire and thoughtful storytelling to the concert stage. Her performances are marked by imaginative programming, charismatic stage presence, and a gift for weaving together contemporary works and classical favorites.

Together, they are bringing Rusche's Eclipse Piano Concerto to the stage this March, and the creative process of this collaboration is worth exploring!

Happiest Musician Minisode: Follow Your Energy26 Feb 202600:12:07

After weeks of hustle, I'm finally in a phase where I can focus on practicing and enjoying music for the sheer joy of it. It’s a refreshing change!

But I know many of us feel the weight of expectations to always be productive. We think we should be working harder, promoting ourselves more, or achieving something grand.

What if we allowed ourselves to explore different creative directions and passions?

Our artistic journeys don’t have to be linear. It’s okay to embrace joy and creativity, even if it doesn’t directly pay the bills right now.  (As long as SOMETHING is paying the bills, let's be real!)

So, the next time you find yourself feeling guilty for pursuing what makes you happy, remember: your artistry matters!

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Share in the comments below.

Happiest Musician Minisode: What if you don't NEED the money?11 Apr 202400:13:30

I've had conversations in the past two weeks with no fewer than four people who claim a good reason for undercharging, or avoiding price increases, or even declining to look at the money at all in their creative lives!

And I celebrate you if you are in that fortunate position! If you aren't in a space of urgency around money, that's wonderful.

But it DOESN'T mean you shouldn't think about it. Here's why!

Looking Forward: Work Life Balance 529 Mar 202400:25:19

Thanks for sticking with me through this 5 day challenge! Today, we recapped a bit about the three pillars of Time, Money, and Joy that are available for us to adjust all the time, within our portfolio careers. I hope you've been able to take a little bit of agency around these pillars this week!

Here’s my question - NOW WHAT?

What are you going to do with the time you’ve created, the income you’ve improved, the space you’ve opened up by saying NO? What is the project you really want to see in the world? Is it an artistic project? An educational one? Is there a new income stream you want to build for yourself? Because it is UP TO YOU.

Today I opened early enrollment for the Happiest Musician Accelerator, a three month program that helps musicians to uncap their income and thrive in their creative career.

I invite you to book a call with me so we can chat about what is going on in your life, what you hope to create, and whether the program is a good fit for you. In my experience, I’ve found that this discovery call itself can have a lot of value for people, whether or not you decide to go forward and enroll - there’s a real magic to exploring your ideas with a live person. On that call you’ll get a taste of the way I might coach you in the program.

I'm passionate about this topic because I want to see more creatives thriving in the world. Your artistry MATTERS.

Why it's so HARD - Work Life Balance 125 Mar 202400:17:18

I'm sharing my live challenge with you this week! Listen along to snippets of our daily live sessions: Seeking Work Life Balance for the Working Living Musician!

Today we talked about how hard it can be for us, as musicians, to make our livings and how we all do a million things both artistic and non-. Brendan Slocumb: From musician to best-selling author!21 Mar 202400:25:50

I'm offering a FREE Five Day Challenge starting March 25. Seeking Work-Life Balance, for the WORKING, LIVING Musician. We'll meet on zoom (or you'll enjoy the replay) every day to look at how you could intentionally rebalance your pillars of MONEY, TIME, and JOY and thrive in your creative career!

Register here

Today you'll hear my interview with Brendan Slocumb, whose life was changed by the books he wrote during the pandemic!

I read the Violin Conspiracy a year or so ago, on the recommendation of a non-musical friend. When your thriller, based in the world of classical music, is picked up and enjoyed by people outside of our insular little world, and when it has something really important to say about money and family and race and music and about the world we live in now - that is something we should all be paying attention to!

Brendan Nicholaus Slocumb was raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a degree in music education, concentrations on Violin and Viola. For the past two decades, he has been a public and private school music educator from kindergarten through twelfth grade, teaching general music, orchestra and guitar ensembles. His students were often chosen for district and regional orchestras. In 2005, Brendan was named Teacher of the Year for Robert E. Lee High School; he has been named to Who’s Who of American teachers, and is a Nobel Teacher of distinction. Brendan also serves as an educational consultant for the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Music has always played a major part of Brendan’s life. He believes that it’s a life-saving force, and a gift we should always offer our children. When he was nine, he started playing violin through a public school music program. Friends he grew up with are today sitting in jail; when they were out running the streets, he was in rehearsals. When they were breaking into people’s houses, he was practicing Dvorak and Mozart. His violin opened the door to opportunity, and he ran through it. Since then, Brendan has performed with the Washington Metropolitan Symphony, the McLean Symphony, the Prince George's Philharmonic, and the Alexandria Symphony. He has served  as the concertmaster for the NOVA-Annandale Symphony Orchestra and regularly performs chamber music with members of the Alexandria Chamber Music Society. He maintains a private music studio teaching lessons to students on violin, guitar and piano. Brendan believes that everyone can learn to appreciate and love music, and that it can be a new way of communicating, building bonds, and connecting with people who may look, sound, or speak differently.

In 2022, Brendan published his first novel, THE VIOLIN CONSPIRACY (Anchor Books), a GMA Book Club Pick, the  riveting story of a young Black musician who discovers that his old family fiddle is actually a priceless Stradivarius: when it’s stolen on the eve of the world’s most prestigious classic

Happiest Musician Minisode: Hitting the CAP14 Mar 202400:15:34

I love performing, but when it comes in a surge like it has this week, it reminds me that the cap exists. This is beyond the maximum amount of time I can spend playing in orchestras. But what if I need more money than this? Or need to have a life that works for ME?

Helen Cha-Pyo: Conductor, Educator, and Arts Leader07 Mar 202400:42:14

It's incredible to speak with Helen Cha-Pyo because she is so filled with joy and wisdom.  Her optimism about the next generation of humans is inspiring, as is her mission and story. This is a feel-good episode if I've ever recorded one!

What is YOUR artistic mission statement? You'll want to lean into this question as you listen to Helen's story!

Helen H. Cha-Pyo, the current Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts, leads an organization that serves nearly 2,000 students from 12 New Jersey counties. Her impactful leadership spans across four key programs: the Wharton Performing Arts School, New Jersey Youth Symphony, New Jersey Youth Chorus, and the Paterson Music Project. In her role as the Principal Conductor of the New Jersey Youth Symphony (NJYS), she has led tours to Italy and France, championing the performance of works by women and BIPOC composers, effectively amplifying the voices of underrepresented composers. Under her guidance, NJYS had the distinguished honor of performing at the Juneteenth Celebration concert at Carnegie Hall (2022) and the Motif Award Ceremony at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall (2023).

Prior to her role at Wharton Arts, Cha-Pyo served as Music Director and Conductor of the Empire State Youth Orchestra (ESYO) for 16 years. Her tenure was marked by the orchestra's transformative international tours to Germany, Czech Republic, China, Korea and Portugal. Her dedication to promoting works by American composers earned ESYO the prestigious ASCAP's Adventurous Programming Awards. Her positive impact extended to the founding of ESYO CHIME in 2015, a program dedicated to serving underprivileged youth in Schenectady and Troy, NY. In 2018, ESYO introduced the Helen Cha-Pyo Golden Baton Award and Scholarships to honor students who shared her passion for using music to uplift and enrich communities.

Cha-Pyo's contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, including The Dove Leadership Award from the David & Dovetta Wilson Scholarship Fund in 2019, and the Angelos Artist Award from the Angelos Mission Ensemble in 2022. She was further honored with the Eastman Centennial Award from the Eastman School of Music in the same year.

You can check out Wharton Arts at its website, or follow Helen Cha-Pyo at her website, Facebook, or Instagram.

Nicholas McGegan: the JOY of Creativity in Music04 Dec 202500:38:02

Sometimes on this podcast it's just a pleasure to listen to a great artist talk about the art!

An “expert in 18th-century style” (The New Yorker), Nicholas McGegan is in his sixth decade on the podium. Following a 34-year tenure as Music Director of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale, he is now Music Director Emeritus. He is also Principal Guest Conductor of Hungary’s Capella Savaria.

McGegan’s approach — intelligent, infused with joy, and never dogmatic — has led to engagements with many of the world’s major orchestras, including those of Cleveland, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Sydney, London's Royal Opera House, and the Royal Concertgebouw; regular collaborations with choreographer Mark Morris; and appearances at the BBC Proms and the Edinburgh International Festival.

His extensive discography includes more than 100 releases spanning five decades, including more than 40 with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale, and more than 20 with Capella Savaria. McGegan's recordings have garnered two Gramophone Awards and two GRAMMY nominations.

He was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) “for services to music overseas.” McGegan is committed to the next generation of musicians, frequently conducting and coaching students in regular engagements at Yale, Juilliard, Harvard, the Colburn School, Aspen Music Festival, and more.

He was made a Honorary Member of the Royal College of Music, London by King Charles III and was awarded the President's Award for Distinguished Teaching by Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber.

He's recently released a historical fiction romance, The Copyists.

And our conversation about it is LOVELY.

John Jeter: Rediscovering the music of Louis Ballard08 Feb 202400:43:08

John Jeter has been music director and conductor of the Fort Smith Symphony since 1997. He is the recipient of the Governor’s Award for “Individual Artist of the State of Arkansas”, the Helen M. Thompson Award presented by the League of American Orchestras, and the Mayor’s Achievement Award for services to the City of Fort Smith.

Jeter has guest conducted numerous orchestras in the US and Europe. His music education programs for schools reach up to 10,000 students annually. He is also involved in a growing number of music and wellness projects, and has a long history as a media guest and host.

He’s recently released a new album on Naxos, featuring the music of Louis Wayne Ballard, the first Native American concert composer.  His music is wonderful and his life and career make for a fascinating story.

You can listen to the music at the link above. Our conversation touched on numerous topics including diversity in programming, audience development, the difficulties and rewards of rediscovering a composer, and why we all need to be proactive in this!

Follow the Fort Smith Symphony and John Jeter at their website.

Ian Campbell: What is Partimenti?25 Jan 202400:36:38

Ian Campbell is a composer, pianist, teacher and partimenti expert and teacher.  Partimenti is one of the most efficient tools ever developed for teaching music creatively, but was discarded and has almost been lost. Ian first encountered partimenti studying in Paris, France with disciples of Nadia Boulanger and has been learning, practicing, and teaching partimenti for more than 10 years.

WHY didn't I know anything about this? I'm DELIGHTED to have had this conversation. I feel smarter already...

Cody Weisbach, Doctor of Physical Therapy11 Jan 202400:37:35

Cody Weisbach is a Boulder, CO based Doctor of Physical Therapy with an interest in the prevention and treatment of playing related musculoskeletal disorders in musicians.

He earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy from Simmons College in 2007 and has since gone on to become Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy in 2009 and a Fellow of the American Association of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists in 2010.

Professionally, Cody works for a hospital based outpatient clinic in Longmont, CO. He is a member of the Performing Arts Medical Association, the American Physical Therapy Association Performing Arts Special Interest Group, an advisor on the Performance Healthcare Committee of the National Flute Association, and the founder of Musician’s Maintenance, a website dedicated to connecting musicians with quality, science-based injury prevention and performance health information.

While in Massachusetts he frequently worked with students from the Berklee College of Music. He is also the past Chair of the APTA of Massachusetts Manual Therapy Special Interest Group, where he helped physical therapists from around the state improve their manual therapy skills. He has taught continuing education courses and has held adjunct and affiliate faculty positions in several doctoral level physical therapy programs in the Boston area. He has published in peer reviewed PT journals, co-authored a textbook and presented nationally on topics related to evidence based physical therapy.

Following a childhood in Boulder, Cody moved to Boston for grad school where he met his amazing wife Cara and together they started their family. It took him 12 years, but he finally convinced Cara to move back to Boulder where they now live with their two kids and spend their time hiking, mountain biking, climbing, playing at playgrounds, playing a little music and enjoying the Colorado outdoors.

I loved this conversation. Why do we not have this information, as performing musicians? I was taught that if I hurt, I should rest. Period. Oh, and I was told to warm up before I play, which … whatever. I love warmups, I talk about them all the time, but blowing air through my instrument and playing scales is not an injury prevention tactic. I absolutely signed right up for Cody’s video series and I’m looking forward to whatever his upsell is on the back end.

If you, like me, would be better off if you were taking better care of your body? This is the episode for you.

Check out Cody's website and his excellent free email series!

Dr. Tonya Lawson, Musician, Blogger, SEO Specialist!28 Dec 202300:35:45

Dr. Tonya Lawson is a musician, blogger, and SEO specialist whose mission is to empower musicians and other creatives to build out passive income streams so they have the financial freedom to live the life they want to live.

She works part time at Middle Tennessee State University, runs a private music studio of 50+ students, has 3 blogs, and through her membership, helps musicians get their websites found on google so they can book more gigs, get more students, and earn passive income along the way!

We talked about

1. Why musicians should be diversifying their income and how to set up passive income streams without sacrificing your music career.

2. How to use a blog to bring new people to your website (without having to constantly promote it on social media).

3. How to add additional monetization to your private studio with affiliate income.

And this was SOO deliciously geeky for me. I loved our conversation and I know you will too!

Tim Corpus: Composer, Sound Designer, Arts Manager14 Dec 202300:41:08

Tim Corpus is an internationally performed composer, sound designer, and arts manager who calls Chicago home. Highlights include performances at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and features on CNN Money, BBC Radio3, and 98.7 WFMT among others. His album, “MMXX”, was shortlisted for the 2022 Grammy awards and hailed as “a striking disc” by critic Robert Hugill.

Also a composer for film and games, his music has received awards from festivals around the country. Beyond his own compositions, Tim is an active orchestrator and arranger having worked with Andrea Bocelli, Placido Domingo, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, Third Coast Percussion, and others.

His diverse career in the arts has also included leading arts organizations as an Executive Director and board member, and teaching at Loyola University Chicago and Chicago City Colleges.

I loved talking portfolio careers with Tim - he’s right down in the weeds of how you build a thriving life as a creator, a performer, an arts manager - how you take care of yourself both inside and out, and how you get things done when there are a million things pulling at you.

I know you will love this conversation!

Kincaid Rabb: Navigating Burnout and Creativity30 Nov 202300:38:57

Kincaid Rabb is a writer and composer. They like dinosaurs, roller coasters, romance bookstores, craft cocktails, and houseplants. Kincaid writes about childhood memories, fantasy worlds, and little epiphanies that inspire the everyday extraordinary.

Kincaid identifies as queer, transgender, nonbinary, neurodivergent, and autistic, and uses they/them pronouns.

I’ve been working with Kincaid for a while - they wrote a fantastic piece for the oboists in my FLOW program and I have such admiration for their talent - but this conversation was not about that.

Many people aspire to a creative life - the magical idea of working from home, as a composer or writer, all the time sounds just heavenly. Kincaid speaks eloquently about the difficulties that come along with this life, and I’ve not heard anyone speak so specifically and helpfully about burnout and creative recovery.

I know you will hear some ideas and truths that you can take away into your own practice!

You can find Kincaid at their website or on instagram.

Merideth Hite Estevez: Artists for Joy!16 Nov 202300:31:57

Grab my UNRELEASED chapter, Managing the Money!

Of course, you might want to read the rest of the book, too...

Today you’ll hear my interview with Dr. Meredith Hite Estevez.  She's an Oboist, Author, Coach, and Podcaster, which might lead you to believe that I only ever interview people who are exactly like me. You’d be wrong, though. Meredith is uniquely herself - and so wise and interesting! You’ll hear me speechless over and over at the ideas and frameworks that come out of her mouth.  I’ve long been listening to her podcast, Artists for Joy, admiringly, but with full awareness of how differently we approach our work. And this is what makes humanity so wonderful!

An active freelancer and sought-after recitalist, oboist Dr. Merideth Hite Estevez has performed and taught throughout North and South America, Asia, and Europe.  She has performed with top orchestras in the US and abroad, including the Met Opera Orchestra and PhillyPops, and is currently the English hornist/Second Oboe of the Chamber Orchestra of NY. She has served on faculties of numerous universities and schools of music, most recently as Associate Professor of Oboe at University of Delaware.

As the founder and director of "Artists for Joy," she invites artists into community to unleash joy in the creation of art and to consider creativity as a spiritual practice. Her podcast of the same name was a winner of the Award of Excellence in 2022 Communicator Awards. She has degrees from The Juilliard School, Yale School of Music, and Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Her first book, “The Artist’s Joy: A Guide to Getting Unstuck, Embracing Imperfection, and Loving Your Creative Life,” debuts in Spring 2024 through Broadleaf Books.

Dr. Kristin Leitterman, a solo artist of oboe and voice, defies modern convention, bringing exciting and unusual programs to audiences. She has performed compositions employing both oboe and voice that she commissioned from Michael-Thomas Foumai, Jason Coleman, Whitney George, and Lyle Davidson in major concert venues around the world, taking her to Spain, Brazil, and Canada, as well as throughout the United States, including Carnegie Hall and Jordan Hall.

As Assistant Professor of Oboe at Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, since 2018, Dr. Leitterman teaches oboe and bassoon and double reed techniques, coaches chamber ensembles, and acts as the woodwind area coordinator. For many years she has served as director of the Lucarelli Oboe Master Class, a weeklong immersive oboe workshop founded by Humbert Lucarelli. As a guest artist, she has presented master classes at many institutions, including Manhattan School of Music and New York University, both in New York City, and the Hartt School, West Hartford, Connecticut.

Dr. Leitterman has presented her research on the life and works of composers Mary Chandler and Marie de Grandval, as well as the musical autograph album of oboist and composer Gustave Vogt, at The Juilliard School, New York, Music by Women Festival, the International Double Reed Society conferences, and the conference of the Associação Brasileira de Palhetas Duplas (ABPD) in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil.

She holds degrees from the City University of New York’s Graduate Center, the Hartt School, University of Hartford, the New England Conservatory of Music, and the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory. Besides her long association with Humbert Lucarelli, her teachers include Mark McEwen, Barbara Bishop, and Amy Burton (voice).

We spoke about her new book, "Relax and Take a Deep Breath: The Lucarelli Approach to Oboe Playing", which is available from Carl Fischer.

Mary Lou Falcone: Public Relations and Lewy Body Dementia12 Oct 202300:34:58

Today on the podcast, you'll hear from Mary Lou Falcone, Founder and owner of M.L. Falcone, Public Relations

Mary Lou Falcone is internationally known as a classical music publicist/strategist who for 50 years has helped guide the careers of celebrated artists – Van Cliburn, Gustavo Dudamel, Renée Fleming, Sir Georg Solti, James Taylor – and advised many institutions including Carnegie Hall, Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic.  Combining communication skills with her background as a performer and educator, she now adds another layer: advocate for Lewy body dementia (LBD) awareness.  Her late husband, the illustrator Nicky Zann who died from LBD in 2020, was the catalyst for this her first book.

This conversation was so inspiring to me - Mary Lou has SO MUCH wisdom to share for musicians today about seeing opportunities, about learning on the job, about taking agency, about integrity and kindness and paying it forward. She has such beautiful words about caregiving, and she relates it so beautifully to what we do in so many realms of our lives. I wanted her to keep talking forever.

The book, I Didn't See it Coming, came out October 3 and I recommend it highly, but first please listen to this beautiful conversation.

Mary Lou's website is https://maryloufalcone.com/

Happiest Musician Minisode: It's All Experiments04 Oct 202300:12:58

Sometimes as musicians - heck, as PEOPLE, we hesitate to start new things. We shy away from what we are meant to do in the world because we aren't sure how it will go or what will happen or what other people will think. What if you were allowed to treat something new as an EXPERIMENT?

I want to let you know that I have a new program starting this October.  The Happiest Musician Accelerator is a three month group program for musicians who want to have an impact in the world.

It’s to encourage musicians to step outside the narrowest version of their career, to expand the box, and to create for themselves the life they want to live from a place of alignment and love.. It’s to give them the practical tools to start new income streams or launch programs. And it’s to give them the confidence to try!

Check it out at the link above, and reach out to me if you have any questions. I’d love to chat with you!

Today on the podcast: Kate Kayaian is a bestselling author and a career & mindset coach for artists and creatives. She runs her signature group program, The Creatives Leadership Academy and maintains a small roster of 1:1 clients.  Kate started the blog, Tales From The Lane in 2016 to be a career and lifestyle-focused resource geared towards creative entrepreneurs, and is currently working on her first full-length book.

A former professional cellist, she attended the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music and went on to have a thriving career–performing with several Grammy Award-winning groups and touring as a solo and chamber musician. When the pandemic hit in early 2020, she pivoted to the online space, and she’s never looked back.

She lives on the beautiful island of Bermuda with her husband and rescue pup and spends her days working with clients, writing, gardening, and serving on several boards. She believes that everyone has the right to live exactly the kind of life they have always dreamed of living.

Kate and I have been friends for a long time and I’m an enormous fangirl - everything she does is smart, and loving, and bold, and aligned. It was great to hear the inside scoop on how she’s been creating these huge shifts in her own life and how she’s helping her clients to do the same.

Jonathan Kravtchenko: Tangos for Two14 Sep 202300:36:15

Jonathan Kravtchenko is an exciting young composer from Canada. He is currently getting ready for the premiere of his new opera-nova, "Tango for Two", which premieres in Toronto on October 21st.

It's difficult to get STARTED in a music career, and in my conversation with Jonathan we looked at the landscape for recent graduates.  COVID was awful for everyone, but my husband and I were in a relatively privileged place, with established portfolio careers to fall back on.  The generation that came of age during this pandemic has had a harder time!

We talked about the needs of new audiences, the trajectories of young musicians, and his upcoming self-produced opera premiere, Tango for Two.

You can follow Jonathan at his website, Facebook, and YouTube.

Jeffrey Biegel: a 50-State Project!31 Aug 202300:46:08

Today you'll hear my interview with Jeffrey Biegel: Pianist, composer, arranger, professor and entrepreneur.

We talked about what it takes to create a major project and find buy-in from EVERYWHERE. About the importance of bringing new music into the world. About sharing the legacy of those who have come before and creating your own. This conversation was a delight!

Jeffrey Biegel is a respected pianist of traditional repertoire, starting life nearly deaf. He studied with Adele Marcus and has built a career of old and new music. He created the first classical livestreams in 1997 and most recently, the first 50 state project free to orchestras celebrating America with Peter Boyer's "Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue". Mr. Biegel also recorded the critical edition of "Rhapsody in Blue", and composed "Three Reflections" of JFK, RBG and MLK. He has created over two dozen commissioning projects while simultaneously playing in the grand tradition of the piano, most notably reflective of Josef Lhevinne.

Check out Jeffrey's website and follow him on Instagram

Happiest Musician Minisode: Get clear on the MONEY part!22 Aug 202300:12:49

I’ve had a few conversations recently with people about pricing, about raising the prices that you’re charging for your teaching or for your reeds, or for the coaching that you offer. And I’ve had conversations with people recently about choosing to monetize or not to monetize a skill or passion, a hobby that they have.

So I'm sharing some thoughts on this topic with you!

This episode is brought to you today by Happiest Musician Coaching. You are amazing, and I believe in you. What are you trying to create?  What do you need your career to be and do for you? What are you not seeing that you need to do and work on?  I love these conversations and supporting musicians like you. Gabriel Olafs: Lullabies17 Aug 202300:35:21

Lullabies For Piano And Cello is a collection of instrumental works inspired by Icelandic folk songs. Accompanied by cellist Steiney Sigurðardóttir, the duo tracked the album in Reykjavik’s Eldborg Concert Hall. Following the implementation of choir, orchestra, and cinematic heft on 2022’s Solon Islandus, Gabríel made a conscious decision to strip the sound down to just these two instruments. As opposed to electronics, multi-tracking provided expansive flourishes. Together, Gabríel and Steiney unlocked a striking sound reliant on their quiet chemistry and a rich connection.

The 10-track album traces its origin to a famous collection of Icelandic melodies entitled Icelandic Folk Songs, which was unearthed by Gabríel at an antique bookshop in his home city of Reykjavik. Originally published in 1906, this out-of-print tome collated various folk numbers and lullabies with rare sheet music. Gabríel decided to not only reimagine five of the book’s tunes but to also pen five of his own lullabies as an homage to tradition.

“I have faith in the power of melody, and lullabies encapsulate both history and nostalgia,” says Gabríel.  “When I’m writing music, nostalgia is my favorite feeling to capture. It’s a complex emotion because it evokes both sadness and happiness at the same time. Lullabies are core musical memories for all of us, and with Lullabies for Piano and Cello I hope to unlock them for you.”

At just 24 years old, Gabríel responds to ancient Viking folk songs with the perspective of a postmodern Gen Z composer. By challenging himself to compose contemporary lullabies, he has explored his own fantasy world – a fantasy for his generation. And like all the best fantasy worlds, it is rooted in the history and mythology of his people, the Icelanders. After generating over 100 million streams for his original instrumental compositions and earning widespread international acclaim, Gabríel summons the spirit of timeless Icelandic lullabies with a twist of his own magic.

I loved talking with Gabriel because I learned A LOT. A lot about Icelandic history and linguistics. A lot about creating a brand new work with a sense of nostalgia. A lot about self-promotion and how having a record deal doesn't mean that all of your problems are over.  This was a fascinating conversation and I know you will enjoy it!

What if we normalized paying musicians for their expertise and professionalism? What if we normalized asking for the fee we need?  This is not ALWAYS possible, and not ALWAYS advisable - but if you've never thought about it, let's think!

Joseph Sowa: Wizarding School for Composers03 Aug 202300:44:29

Composer and educator Dr. Joseph Sowa writes music that revels in vivid colors and rich textures. His music has been performed by a wide spectrum of groups, from prestigious ensembles like the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Dal Niente, and the PRISM Quartet, to schools and churches across North America. His talent has earned him accolades from ASCAP, the American Prize, and the Barlow Endowment.

Joseph is also the founder of the Wizarding School for Composers, where he teaches both amateur and college-trained musicians how to compose memorable, goosebump-inducing music — and do it in a healthy, happy, and effective way.

Joseph is brilliant. In this conversation he demystifies and de-stuffifies the art of composition, ALMOST making me believe that I too could do it. He's an INSPIRATION, and I know you will love this conversation!

You'll hear him talking about an oboe project during the Fall 2023 cohort of the Wizarding School - that's a collaboration with my Invincible Oboist FLOW program!  WE will have oboe pieces written for US! If you are an adult oboist, and looking for a community of support and world-class mentorship that will INCLUDE a personalized composition? You might be very interested in my nine-month program and I encourage you to reach out to me now

But of course, I want to promote Joseph's Wizarding School here, and he's hosting events throughout August 2023 and you should absoutely check it out.
