In this episode, we cover a recent presentation where I included a good portion of the kitchen sink. The kind of work one might do in forensics and ABA, a little more on competence to stand trial, and also public speaking, social validity, intimate partner violence, and some general information on how to apply what we know in this unique specialty of forensic and behavior analysis.
Highlights:
Different forensic settings where ABA can be applied
The challenge of implementing ABA in forensic settings
The “other forensic psychology” = Public speaking
Fitness to stand trial
Social validity and social significance
Intimate partner violence
The challenge of establishing cause and effect relationships - Forensic Behavioral Case Conceptualization

Highlights:
This interview focused on the importance of improving supervision in behavior analysis, with Dr. Weinberg discussing the upcoming comprehensive book on behavior analytic supervision co-authored with Joseph Catilli and Lynn Connor. Mike emphasized the need for evidence-based supervision and highlighted the current gaps in training, particularly in case conceptualization and interdisciplinary collaboration. He shared examples of complex cases where medical and neurological issues influenced behavior, stressing the importance of recognizing the limits of behavioral interventions. The conversation also covered the high rates of burnout among behavior analysts and the need for a restorative model to address supervisor burnout. Dr. Weinberg proposed the development of a structured system for supervised experience placements, similar to APA's model in psychology, to improve the quality of supervision and training in the field. We discussed the challenges of preparing new BCBAs for complex cases and the potential for rotations in various settings to broaden their experience. The book aims to serve as a comprehensive resource for universities and practicing behavior analysts.

This is the third episode in a three-part series featuring Dr. Jerrod Brown. Following up on our discussion of Forensic Neuroscience, Dr. Brown introduces us to the tasty topic of nutritional neuroscience. We cover the Dan White case from San Francisco, California in the 1970s. Mr. White murdered Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, after a series of disputes. In the years since many have scoffed at White’s lawyers who argued his poor diet led to physiological state where the defendant was suffering from a diminished ability to make decisions (i.e., “Twinkie Defense”). Could there have been something to that idea? Join us for this detailed discussion of how nutrition helps conduct our behavior. Contact Dr. Brown at jerrod01234brown@live.com for further information on this topic. He will provide a copy of the comprehensive nutritional neuroscience article to anyone who emails him.
Highlights:
- “Twinkie defense”: The Dan White case overview
- Diet and criminal behavior connection
- Lead paint
- Prison diet and health impact
- Circadian rhythms and their impact on health and behavior
- The basics of neurotransmitters, neurohormones, and the HPA axis

- The “Bible” of behavior and crime from 1987.
- An overview of mental capacity and competency in US law.
- The story of the mentally ill professor and the development of the first Oxford English Dictionary.
- Three books that are all about psychopaths, and some oddball authors whom we might want to keep an eye on.
- The future of crime.
Books covered in this episode:
Behavioral Approaches to Crime and Delinquency: A Handbook of Application, Research, and Concepts. Ed. Edward K. Morris and Curtis J. Braukmann (1987)

In 1982, America was in the grip of terror where an unknown assailant was poisoning Tylenol capsules with cyanide. Unsuspecting victims innocently tried to treat their ailments with a common pain medication, and ingested a fatal dose. We still feel the impact of these murders in the form of mandatory safety seals on medicine, milk, candy, and virtually every other kind of consumable product. In this episode Dr. Joseph Cibelli, a forensic psychologist, may have solved the case as an investigator, specialist, and the son of the possible Tylenol poisoner.
Highlights:
- Dr. Cibelli’s new book about the Tylenol poisonings.
- A deathbed confession by Dr. Cibelli’s father while on hospice.
- In Arlington Heights, Illinois, three members of one family are poisoned by Tylenol capsules. Three “martyrs.”
- The broad concept of psychopathy.
- The possible Tylenol poisoner’s experience of being accidentally poisoned by medicine in his own childhood. “I tasted death, and I don’t know that I was ever the same."
- How Dr. Cibelli started putting the clues together at the time of the poisonings.

Once a student. Now I lecture. I graciously accepted this opportunity to speak at my alma mater. I hope this lecture serves as an introduction to this field. As I have discussed in previous episodes, there are many different areas to cover in this subspecialty. I did not include the questions from students, but one can deduce from my answers what the focus is. Also, from the highlights below.
Highlights:
- Literature in support of using ABA in Forensic Psychology
- Association for Behavior Analysis International Special Interest Groups
- Different forensic settings where ABA can be applied
- The challenge of implementing ABA in forensic settings
- “Fitness” or competency to stand trial
- Social validity and social significance
- Measurement of the presenting problem, as best we can do
- Generality in forensic settings
- The systems perspective when it comes to solving problems
- Q & A (Just the “A” rather)

Towards the end of 2025 I was invited on a panel to discuss applied behavior analysis and scope of practice. My specialty area had to do with (you guessed) crime and behavior analysis. I saved my modest contribution, and will present it here now. Just my point of view. Enjoy.
Highlights:
- My beginnings in the field, and where I see the combined specialties of crime, forensics, and behavior analysis at this point in time.
- How graduate students can prepare themselves for their own work in this area.
- Inpatient care, and how behavior analytic interventions can gain greater acceptance.
- Other licenses and qualifications (in brief before the camera power ran out).

All four authors of an upcoming book on supervision join the podcast for this overview of supervision. This extraordinary panel focused on behavior analytic supervision, featuring a discussion between Michael, Valeria, Lynn, and Joe about the challenges and best practices in supervising behavior analysts. This is a follow up to our discussion with Joe and Michael from the last episode.
Highlights:
The participants explored the importance of competency-based models, ethical considerations, and the need for ongoing supervision beyond initial skill acquisition.
The high rate of behavior analysts leaving the field due to lack of proper support and supervision, emphasizing the need for structured training programs.
The evolution of supervision practices, including the use of remote supervision and simulation models, while acknowledging the limitations of distance supervision.
While supervision training is now being formally recognized by the BACB, more needs to be done to ensure effective supervision practices across the field.

- How it was discovered, early on in the case, that Tylenol capsules were used in the poisonings.
- Dr. Cibelli’s “old school” method of geographic profiling.
