We need to communicate with other pet professionals, and if you're an owner, you need to communicate with everybody. So we're gonna talk about how we can best get everyone on the same page.

In the first part, we'll talk about some myths that groomers and owners may still believe. In the second part, we'll talk about helping fellow groomers modernize.

This week we're talking about the use of words and what to do if a dog doesn't know any useful words. 

In the first part, we'll talk about 100 episodes and what I've learned. In the second part, we'll talk about how understanding a dog's comfort and range of motion can reduce unwanted behaviors. It's important for new groomers and a great reminder for the experienced groomers.

This one is for the trainers and those of us who work with trainers. In the first part, we'll talk about the new puppy or new dog with no known problems. In the second part, we'll talk about the dog with a known problem.

We will talk about the controversy about using meds for animals who have difficulty with grooming. There are lots of strong feelings about this. I think that many groomers refuse to work with animals that are medicated. And then there are other people who really want the animals to be medicated.

So we'll talk about where some of this bias comes from. This is not veterinary advice. I am not a veterinarian, and we will not list specific medications. We'll just talk about how many groomers feel about medications, and we'll give a little bit of a history lesson to see where that was coming from.

This week, we're talking about dogs when they're at home. What do their owners expect from them? What do their owners believe is going on at home, at the groomer, and at the vet. Why should we be asking?

In the first part, we'll talk about the advantages to gentle, kind, and patient handling. In the second part, we'll talk about introducing our owners to the idea.

Maybe you think they're too small, old, or young. Any pet can hurt you. I also don't want you to think that maybe a dog missed. “You got lucky that he missed.” They rarely miss. So we're gonna talk about the difference between warnings and a dog that's trying to hurt you and why we, as professionals, should take warnings very seriously.

This week we'll be playing around with a made up example of when we aren't asking the right questions. We'll ask "do we need a better bucket?". In the second part, I'll give you a brief introduction to a tool to help figure out behavior problems. Applied Behavior Analysis, Functional Behavior Assesment, and Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence chains. Don't worry! I'll try to make this tool fun and easy. 

This week, we're talking about our role as dog pros who are not veterinarians. Gathering clues about what behaviors are normal and abnormal and helping owners understand that their Vet may have some medications that can help their dogs be comfortable. 

In the first part, we'll talk about what consent is and why it's important. In the second part, we'll talk about consent as communication. 

In the first part, we'll discuss what we would do if were "in crazy land" and wanted to teach dogs to be aggressive for grooming and vet visits. What would we do if we "wanted" dogs to struggle and wiggle against us? In the second part, we talk about avoiding tunnel vision and thinking about the bigger picture. 

In the first part, we'll go over some questions for owners to find out how their dog responds when they don't want to be touched. In the second part, we'll talk about some things for owners to do at home. 

This week, we'll talk about why some people aren't ready to try to teach dogs to be good for grooming, vet visits, and home care. We'll talk about why forcing dogs to "get it done" is still so common.

This week we'll talk about what we should try with Every Dog, Every Time, and in Every Situation. 

This week, we're talking about answering questions with more questions and clue-gathering. How does that work when we talk about a specific dog? 

January is train your dog month. We'll be discussing what training is and how we can encourage owners to continue to train during their dog's lifetime. 

This week, we'll talk about some puppies that I'm working with. In the first part, we'll talk about breaking things into tiny steps and teaching about carriers. In the second part, we'll talk about getting owners touching their dogs. 

There are lots of ways we can define learning. I think these 4 stages are going to be helpful. If you've ever wondered, well, we worked on it last time, why doesn't he understand this time? Or why does he need to practice this? There are lots of things that we can do better if we understand how dogs learn.
