Glass Breaker’s Club with Korina Oswald

Saison 5 · Épisode 56

mardi 3 septembre 2024Durée 01:10:28

Today on Cracked with Chevonne Ariss speaking with Korina Oswald, a stained glass artist based in Seattle, WA where she lives with her husband and children.

Currently, her artistic practice is focused on community-based projects liker her glass quilt that involve artists from around the world. She first conceived this project in the aftermath of COVID’s isolation.  Much like quilt-making, glass has long been relegated to “craft” and it’s artistry has not been acknowledged nearly enough by the mainstream art world. Oswald seeks to broaden the conversation of what constitutes fine art by creating a piece so large that it cannot be ignored.

Korina’s truly my twin flame in community building. Here’s the thing about Korina (and if you know her you already know this): Whenever I’m talking to her I feel like we’re whispering, on the verge of giggles, the entire time. She and I have an inside joke but I have no idea what it is. Korina was the first interview I did for this season and so whenever I would mention her name to everyone after, everyone smiles, and I think that’s the thing about Korina that makes sense that she’s so good at doing community work.

Today Korina and I are going to discuss some of her personal work as well as her community projects, their future and how you could and should get involved!!!

Join me as I crack it all wide open!!

To see more of Korina’s work, her instagram is @korinaoswald and mine is @runaglassworks

For the Cracked Patreon members Korina is gifting one of her gorgeous plant trellises. I’ll be doing a drawing for that the 15th of September, 2024. She also made a stretching studio playlist for all of the Patreon members to enjoy. I love this- she made the playlist 25 minutes long so that you know when it ends, it’s time to stop what you’re doing and move around, stretch and I quote,  “give your dang neck a break” :)

I did go to Seattle to see Korina and the amazing crew at Fremont Antique Glass this spring! Shout out to them and thanks again for taking the time you did with me. Check out my visit in my story highlights on instagram.

Sculpting Skylines with Tom Fruin

Saison 5 · Épisode 55

mardi 27 août 2024Durée 59:52

Welcome back to Cracked with Chevonne Ariss!
Today, I’m honored to have Tom Fruin join me. Known for his large-scale installations, Tom uses steel and brightly colored plexiglass to create monumental sculptures.

Tom’s work stands out not only for its visual impact but also for its commitment to accessibility and sustainability with his use of reclaimed materials.

You may already be familiar with Tom’s work but just didn’t know the artist behind the pieces. Fruin's largest installation to date, the Watertower series, is installed on multiple rooftops across New York City and around the country.

Tom, who grew up in Los Angeles and now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, shares with me today his experiences and insights into the world of large-scale installations.

Join me as I crack it all wide open…

To see more of Tom’s work, his instagram is @tomfruin and mine is @runaglassworks.
For a lucky Patreon page member Tom is gifting some stickers and one of his glass patchwork candles. The best part: as the candle burns down, the colors glow through the glass it’s really pretty! I’ll be doing the drawing for that September 8th, 2024.

Booty Bounce with Kyle Hubbs of Booty Glass Girls

Saison 4 · Épisode 47

mardi 1 août 2023Durée 01:23:15

Today we’re talking BBLs, BBGs Bounce Clubs, Baddies and so so much more today with Booty Glass Girls’ New Orlean’s artist Kyle Hubbs. Kyle is a self-taught stained glass maker who began his work with glass in 2014. After several years of experimenting with more traditional and geometric work, as a native of south Louisiana he looked no further than his own New Orleans for inspiration for his current and modern expression of glass. He credits the exuberance, attitude, style and self-confidence of young people in his local bounce clubs as the muses for his work. Bounce is a style of music that originated in New Orlean's bars and local nightclub scene during the late 1980s and early 90s. Using a call-and-response  style of flow inspired by the Mardi Gras chants that were common in New Orleans brass bands. It brought a new life to New Orleans’ own brand of Louisiana hip-hop and continues today to grow in popularity and be nationally recognized in current songs like Beyoncé’s “Get Me Bodied," Rihanna’s “Pour it Up" and Drake’s “Nice for What.”

There’s been a bit of controversy around Kyle because he's a male and coming into today, many of us thought he was a female. With that came assumptions and projected intentions and narratives around of his work. Then once listeners realized he was a man, really strong opinions about cultural crossover, exploitation and appropriation began to fill my DMs. I wanted to give Kyle a platform to speak on all of it, and he knew what he was walking into, so Kyle, thank you for showing up. And for you the listener, I ask that you hold your judgement til you listen to my talk with Kyle in it’s entirety. Duality in art is so important. Art that inspires conflict within us is important. Whether it's violent but also beautiful or full of both sorrow and joy. These are the conversation starters. Right? And these conversations are often the ones that can spark growth.

The core mission of this podcast is about celebrating stained glass art, and my love for the work of Booty Glass Girls is unwavering. Despite all my questions,  there's no question in my mind that the cross pollination of this contemporary culture and stained glass is still a smash hit. All right let’s get into it…

Join me as I crack it all wide open!
To see more of Kyle's work, his instagram is @bootyglassgirls.

For the Patreon Kyle is gifting a 20"x16" numbered print.  I’ll be doing a drawing for that 12 days after this episode is released!

Baking Business Pie with Erin Glassworks

Saison 4 · Épisode 46

mardi 18 juillet 2023Durée 01:27:34

Today on Cracked I'm joined by artist Erin from Erin Glassworks. Her work is inspired by nature,  with a focus on her local Florida wildlife. When she's not translating the natural world into a  glass design she's building community and educating other artists and small business owners through her social media. Today Erin and I are going through how she's running things down in Largo Florida, exactly how and where she's making her profit, the art of Patreon,  ways she's minimizing her impact on the environment through her packaging and how she's found, at least in my opinion, the most organic and thoughtful way to create an online stained glass community. To see more of Erin's work, her instagram is @eringlassworks and her website is eringlassworks.com.  For the Patreon page members Erin is gifting her guide to Social Media eBook, and for 1 member we’re doing a drawing for a set of her layout frames.

mardi 11 juillet 2023Durée 01:21:41

Today for episode 46 of Cracked I'm joined by Jacob Hinnenkamp, the son 1/2 of  Cincinnati's father and son duo Hinnenkamp Glass Crafters. As a young child Jacob remembers watching his father work on windows, mesmerized by the amount of detail and care that went into every piece. As a young adult he took on the craft himself and in late 2017 he finally decided to take the hobby to the next level and start marketing his work, creating a business making custom pieces. Today Jacob and are are going to discuss his personal designs as well as  his experience as being a licensed artist for the Charley Harper Studio, his take on inside angle cuts and his future of designing official Charley Harper patterns.
Let's get into it...

mardi 4 juillet 2023Durée 01:31:14

Hello and welcome back! Today on Cracked with Chevonne Ariss I'm joined by Lindsey Wonder. She is a Tucson, AZ based tattooer, stained glass artist, painter and illustrator. Lindsey received her BFA from The School of Visual Arts in NYC. She specializes in stained glass tail lights she makes custom for vintage cars, trucks and vans. Today we're going to chat about the parallels between stained glass and tattooing, her upcoming vending at Van Nationals, and different ways we all should tweak the way we approach waitlists to keep everyone honest! Let's get into it...

Join me as I crack it all wide open!

To see more of Lindsey's work her instagram is @Lindseywonder and her website is lindseywonder.com

For the Patreon page Lindsey is gifting one of her sets of stained glass dice to hang in your rearview mirror. They measure about 3.5” x 2”, so they’re really the perfect size, not too big like classic fuzzy dice, not too small, and I’m speaking from experience because mine are hanging in my truck as we speak and I love them so much! I’ll be doing a drawing for those on Instagram 12 days after this episode is released.

Unified Design In Mind with Jack Brindley of Pavilion Pavilion

Saison 4 · Épisode 43

mardi 27 juin 2023Durée 01:13:50

Hi everyone and welcome back to Cracked with Chevonne Ariss!
Today on episode 44 I'm joined by Edinburgh artist Jack Brindley. Under the alias Pavilion Pavilion, Jack has been exploring the relationship between contemporary art and objects of use, combining his research as an artist and his interest in design and architecture. Each work is a unique and individually commissioned piece, looking at forms found in minimalism and ‘painterly hard line abstraction’. The aim is to create works that are contemporary whilst adhering to the traditional methods and materials. How should Contemporary Stained Glass sit between an artwork and an architectural embellishment?

Stained Glass by Pavilion Pavilion is influenced by moments such as the groundbreaking Bauhaus School, where Design, Architecture, Craft and Art were all at the forefront of innovation. Today we discuss his idea art as a place holder, finding focus in his craft, enhancing what is already present and how maybe having all the glass tools and resources at your fingertips may not be the best thing after all. Let's get into it...

Join me as I crack it all wide open!

To see more of Jack's work, his instagram is @pavilionpavilion_ and his website is pavilionpavilion.com.
For the Cracked Patreon page Jack is gifting an original drawing that’s called “Grid Study” made in 2022, and it’s charcoal and ink on paper. It's 42 x 30 cm or 16.5" x  11.8”. I’ll be doing a drawing for that 12 days after the release of this episode.

Saison 4 · Épisode 42

mardi 20 juin 2023Durée 01:18:00

Welcome back! It's Season 4 of Cracked! Today to kick it off I'm joined by Brooklyn based glass artist Sacha Carlos-Raps! She is a Filipina immigrant and not only makes beautiful glass work full of bright colors but also does printmaking and illustrations. Her art practice is "her rebellious demonstration against the good immigrant binary and the post-diasporic expectations of “first gens” Her work is memoriric totems that embraces the kaleidoscopic inner self, an ode to the abode and the absurd."
Today we talk glasswork of course but we're also going to talk about markets, candles, get into the making of her zine, her Oaxacan residency and then we wind it back down with some fun Phillipino facts.
Let's get into it...
Join me as I crack it all wide open!
To see more of Sacha's work, her instagram is @sacharaps and her website is sacharaps.com. Take The 90 to The 405 to The 101 to The 2 with Jax Partlow

Saison 3 · Épisode 41

mardi 31 janvier 2023Durée 01:52:03

Hellooooo and welcome back to Cracked with Chevonne Ariss! Today’s guest is Jax Partlow. Jax Partlow is a glass artist based in Los Angeles. While formally trained in graphic design, Jax prefers the longevity and physical aspects that glasswork affords her, as well as a very tangible connection with her late father. It was only after she was left his tools that she gravitated toward the craft while living in Hungary. Thoughtful, romantic and functional, stained glass fulfills a creative desire for Jax as an artist, while meeting her designer side with its utilitarian appeal. She is most recognized for her Public Piece Project in which she installs her art in unlikely spaces. It’s my favorite. It’s so smart and cool and she’s my absolute favorite street artist.
Jax’s work has been featured in Stained Glass Magazine, The Corning Museum of Glass: New Glass Review 2022 and by her own accord in the streets of Los Angeles.
Let’s get into it.

From The Outback to The Alps with Nadine Keegan and Tom Medicus

Saison 3 · Épisode 40

mardi 24 janvier 2023Durée 01:26:28

Today’s guests are the dynamic duo Nadine Keegan and Tom Medicus. I was able to catch them both at the same time while Nadine is visiting Tom’s studio in Austria. Although their work is strikingly different, they both have done a brilliant job bringing meaningful topics and statements into their work. Keep listening and you’ll agree! Join me as I crack it wide open...
Nadine: After spending 3 years studying fine art photography at RMIT and PIC, she became disillusioned with the orthodox methods of image making and work style of a fine art photographer.  A few years past and many less artistic pursuits were explored when, with a visit to the solar-punk stained glass mural Cosmovitrial in Toluca, Mexico she finally discovered the creative industry which aligned with her ideals. While realizing the potential that exists within the craft that I had not yet seen in Australia.  Solidifying her obsession with research into the stained glass window's development through the 20th century, with the manifestations of the Arts and Crafts anti-industrialisation ideals embedded in it's design and construction.  Through her work, she celebrates both the legacy of the craft laid out before her and the potentiality of the materials when manipulated with a contemporary perspective and up-to-date technology. Her experience includes custom stained glass fabrication, heritage restoration, architectural glass work and exhibition works. To see more of Nadine's work, her instagram is @nadinekeegan.
Tom: Thomas Medicus is a visual artist based in Innsbruck, Austria. Best known for his anamorphic cubes he also works in other fields such as illustration, animation, digital art, stained glass, restoration and conservation as well as public art. He studied social work at MCI Innsbruck before attending the Glasfachschule Kramsach, a school for glass art, where he earned a master glaziers degree later. In addition to his independent activity as a freelance artist, he was employed in the long-standing firm for stained glass windows Tiroler Glasmalerei for seven years. From the beginning of 2021 he became completely independent and founded his company Studio Medicus. To see more of Tom's work, his instagram is @tomedicus.
