Courageous Nobility with Sgt. Jeff Daukas31 Jan 202300:45:35

Send us a text

A core principle of Courageous Leadership is "Courageous Nobility." Without it, nothing else in leadership will matter and today this is exactly what the law enforcement needs.

Regardless of what society believes, leaders must have a moral compass both in their life and on the job. It is only through the lens of character and integrity that leaders can make difficult decisions in the correct fashion.

Sergeant Jeff Daukas is a current patrol sergeant with over twenty years of service and he will discuss, at a high level, exactly what is meant by "Courageous Nobility" and how it can enable a leader to achieve greatness.

Leadership In The Aftermath of Memphis30 Jan 202300:14:53

Send us a text

In this episode, Travis Yates breaks down the incident in Memphis and what has been missing in all the conversations about this horrific event.

According to Yates, the author of "The Courageous Police Leader" what everyone is missing is that what happened in Memphis was a leadership problem.

"If one of those officers was a leader, that never happens and that is exactly what every chief or sheriff should be asking themselves today.  Maybe they’ve done the duty to intervene training or any of the other check box things we are told to do and I don’t mind that bt no training program can take the place of leadership. If they have not fostered a culture of leadership in their agency…a philosophy that everyone with a badge has the duty of a leader, then they aren’t addressing the right issues. It is that simple.  Everything good and everything bad is because of leadership."

When Stephanie Kiesow hung up her badge and set her sights on academia, she carried with her the silent weight of a career in law enforcement, a weight many of her brothers and sisters in blue know all too well. In this episode, Stephanie, a former officer turned PhD student and author of "Workicide," offers an unguarded look into the mental health challenges that are all too common among those who serve and protect. Her book, a beacon of research and personal experience, guides us through the dark corridors of career-related mental health decline, providing a voice for those often left to suffer in silence.

The thin blue line is one that bears more than just crime and justice—it's a line threaded with personal sacrifice and an unspoken battle with the 'traumatic mind.' Through Stephanie's insights, we learn of the occupational hazards that go unseen: the mental health crises, the identity loss post-retirement, and the continuous exposure to trauma that can chip away at even the staunchest of hearts. It's a candid discussion on the need for resilience and the importance of fostering an identity beyond the uniform—crucial armor for those facing the daily emotional onslaught.

Our conversation takes a turn into the shadowy realms of Internal Affairs investigations, where the psychological toll on officers is as heavy as their badges. Stephanie illuminates the isolation and stigma that can arise during these inquiries, which can feel more like trials by fire than routine procedure. It's a compelling reminder of the critical need for robust support systems capable of guiding law enforcement personnel through their most vulnerable moments. Have you ever stood at a crossroads, principles in one hand, the easy path in the other? In this episode, we tackle the silent crisis afflicting today’s society: a dire need for courage among leaders. Courage that demands we stand grounded in our convictions, regardless of the tremors that threaten our professional and personal worlds.

Through our journey, the spotlight falls on Dr. Roland Fryer, the brilliant mind whose empirical research on police use of force overturned widely accepted narratives. Withstanding immense pressure and the looming threat to his career, Fryer’s resolve to publish his findings remains a testament to integrity. His story, woven from the threads of a challenging upbringing to the academic peaks of Harvard, underscores the monumental impact that one individual's adherence to truth can provide. Our discussion is not just a chronicle of Fryer’s work, but a rallying cry for the kind of leadership that can genuinely reform and inspire change within the community.

This episode is a tribute to those who prioritize unwavering principles over the luring call of comfort and a reminder that it is these rare acts of bravery that carve paths for progress. A Consent Decree Disaster with Sean Willoughby23 Feb 202400:46:22

Send us a text

When the rules of engagement change on the streets, what happens to the guardians keeping the peace? Sean Willoughby, president of the Albuquerque Police Officers Association, steps into the spotlight to shed light on the stark realities of police reform under DOJ consent decrees. Through Sean's lens, we uncover the consequences these changes have wrought on the Albuquerque Police Department: a rise in officer-involved shootings, strained budgets, and a workforce grappling with the chasm between theory and practice.

As we peel back the layers of oversight, Sean's story unveils the paradox of deescalation policies leading to more fatal encounters, and the mounting pressures on officers to comply with often burdensome reforms. The narrative moves us through the city's law enforcement ecosystem, revealing the complexities of balancing constitutional protections against federal intervention and the intricate dance of local governments funding investigations into their own police forces. This episode is a wake-up call to consider the efficacy of DOJ decrees, the cultural shifts within police departments, and the broader implications for public safety.
