95: Cheeseburgers and Old Tools02 Oct 202600:23:31
This week, CountrySlide comes from somewhere between the burger van and the chainsaw demonstrations at APF 2026.

Richard Prideaux is joined by forestry contractor and SideCountry writer Nick Adams for a wander around the 50th anniversary show at Ragley Estate, where the machinery is enormous, the fish and chips cost £16.50 and somebody appears to be selling a 16-foot shovel.

They compare APF with the Game Fair, consider the financial commitment involved in some seriously expensive forestry machinery and attempt to record a podcast while seemingly every chainsaw manufacturer in Britain starts a demo nearby.

Along the way there are broken brush cutters, George Browne attempting to handle tools, a chance meeting with a Richard Negus fan, Nick's latest SideCountry article, beavers, strange Warwickshire road names and the discovery that the forestry world is small enough that somebody at every stand appears to know somebody else.

All recorded with the 'gentle' background ambience of petrol engines, tannoys and two men waiting for their cheeseburgers.

94: Moths, Myths and Big Cats25 Sep 202600:44:21
Content note: This episode includes discussion of suicide and mental health.

This week, Callum considers building a moth trap, Richard Negus explains the existence of "hyper moth season", and Richard Prideaux admits to a surprisingly strong dislike of small dusty insects.

From there, things drift into some of Britain's stranger countryside folklore. There is the Owlman of Cornwall, Cornish knockers, Hangman's Hill, Black Shuck, the Essex Serpent and the question of why some parts of the country seem to accumulate far more weird stories than others.

Eventually they arrive at the modern rural legend that refuses to disappear: big cats in the British countryside. Were panthers and other exotic cats genuinely released decades ago? Could any still be out there? And if they were, wouldn't one of the country's gamekeepers have found one by now?

Patrons also get the aftershow, featuring an accidental rally stage in an ageing Freelander, lions roaring beside a Suffolk marsh and Callum having a professionally awkward moment while photographing a politician.

93: Posties, Pubs and Public Transport18 Sep 202600:36:45
Are things actually getting worse in the countryside, or are we just noticing what has quietly disappeared?

This week, Richard Prideaux, Richard Negus and Callum McInerney-Riley talk about access to the countryside, disappearing rural services and the difference between visiting rural Britain and actually living in it.

Callum looks back at his earliest memories of fishing and how his relationship with the countryside has changed, while the two Richards compare that with growing up surrounded by rural life. From there, the conversation moves onto village shops, post offices, buses, unreliable postal services and the lack of resilience that comes with living somewhere where everything is spread further apart.Richard Negus then takes the scenic route through rural transport history and arrives at Sutton Hoo, Basil Brown and the question of whether one of Britain's most famous archaeological discoveries would have been quite so easy to make today.

There are also detours into AI, long marriages, old branch lines, tiny trains, men in Lycra and the possibility that the modern countryside has replaced Basil Brown with baboons on Strava.

Richard and Amy will also be at the APF Exhibition at Ragley later this month, so if you spot the hand painted sign, come and say hello.

92: A Pint of Maggots and a Good Education11 Sep 202600:34:49
This week the gang try to hold it together, and after Callum’s cardigan, Richard Negus’ suspicious lighting and an unexpected Tim Curry impression, they eventually get onto the question of how children actually learn about the countryside and whether enthusiasm has gone out of fashion.

Callum’s son taking a copy of The Field Junior into school sparks a wider conversation about field sports, conservation and what happens when teachers and parents are themselves increasingly disconnected from rural life. The three Richards - well, two Richards and Callum - talk about Natural History education, grandparents, letting children get muddy, learning where food comes from and whether enthusiasm is being quietly trained out of youngsters.

Along the way there are childhood fishing trips, bird spotting from the car, deer stalking with a three-year-old, wildfowling misery, whistling children, an unexpected meat-and-pest-control tour, and Callum’s ongoing campaign to hand fishing rods to any curious child who happens to wander past.

Essentially: how do you give children a connection to the countryside? Possibly by worrying less, letting them have a go and accepting that somebody is probably going to spill a pint of maggots.

91: Shark Fishing, Smoking Tea and Summer Catch-Ups04 Sep 202600:33:06
After a few weeks off, Callum, Negus and Prideaux catch up on their summer activities. Negus has spent the hottest months of the year indoors writing his next book, while Callum has been catching absolutely nothing from a kayak, eating slightly furry muntjac and eventually earning the title of shark hunter after landing several sizeable tope in the North Sea.

We also discuss alternative locations for nicotine pouches, becoming the fish and the wisdom of responding to a wildfire warning at sea by heading ashore and lighting a barbecue.

90: Ground Cry with Jamie Blackett13 Aug 202600:29:17
Richard Negus caught up with Jamie Blackett to talk about the new campaigning organisation he has set up to help Britain's ground nesting birds. They talk about some of the problems faced by ground nesting species, the changes which Jamie has seen on his own farm, and what Ground Cry intends to do to identify the gaps in current research, speak honestly about challenges, and support practical, evidence-led solutions.

89: Our highlights of the Game Fair31 Jul 202600:40:51

After a heady weekend of parties, pubs and car park shenanigans, we go through our highlights and experiences at The Game Fair 2026. Richard Negus found himself with the freedom of the fair, Richard Prideaux spoke to nearly everybody in attendance, Callum McInerney-Riley almost saved the day and George Browne had more costume changes than a pantomime dame.

88: Dank Memes, Kidney Beans and R.S. Surtees24 Jul 202600:46:19

After deliberations about who could make a difference as Prime Minister in a one month stint, Callum, Negus and Prideaux reveal their specialist subjects. We're not talking the thing they do best at work, nor what they excelled in at school (if anything at all). No, we are talking about the random things that they have more knowledge than they should about!

Also find out more about Bingo cards, T-shirts and where you can meet up with us at The Game Fair if you are going!

87: Wild Fire, Singed Brows and Charcoal17 Jul 202600:51:02
We couldn't not talk about the drought, resulting fires, Callum's recent pizza oven woes (spoiler alert: he wasn't even cooking a pizza) and Prideaux's forays into making charcoal!

There are a few announcements in this week's episode so listen through to the end and enjoy!

86: Cheese, Salmon flies and Foreign food that you can't live without10 Jul 202600:46:33
In this episode you'll learn about which fish can stand the heat and how river systems suffer in our recent high temperatures, as well as how fountains can actually help fish in distress. Negus challenges Callum and Richard P to identify Salmon flies, and questions which imported foodstuffs the guys can't live without.

In the aftershow (available to patreon supporters) we challenge Callum's historical knowledge, there is a super surprise announcement and a bit of a tease!

85: The Game Fair Prep Episode feat. George Browne03 Jul 202600:48:59
It's not all about the Game Fair, and with a shakeup in hosts this week George off of Scribehound and the Guns on Pegs podcast, and Producer Amy are keeping Richard Prideaux company whilst Negus and Callum are playing away.

We discuss drive-by farming, whether there are benefits to being completely stacked as a podcaster, the sights, smells and sounds of the Game Fair and we (almost) launch Game Fair bingo! There's also a bit more information about "Project X"

83: Mr. Negus Comes To Wales19 Jun 202600:56:24
This latest episode is brought to you by Richard Negus' tour of the British countryside.

During a visit to North Wales, Negus and Prideaux sat down in a woodland to talk about land management, what Negus has witnessed on his travels and why you won't find any mole hills on slurried silage fields.
They also try to bring back feudalism, why land managers should be the ones leading the charge for outdoor access and the slim possibility of Richard Negus writing a second book.

This is our first stab at filming an episode of Countryslide. We DO know what we're doing, but you would never know from the above output.

Jeremy Clarkson did a thing! The title may not sound like these topics are entirely related....although what a segue! Amongst the big topics of what went wrong with FarmFest and who won the Big Farmland Bird Count (in Negus' mind) Prideaux, Negus and McInerney Riley cover off topics as far ranging as weasel taming, mouse attacks, portrait photography and wedding anniversaries.

This week, we’re doing something a little different. Richard Negus sits down for a chat with his mother. Together, they travel back 90 years to explore a bygone era of Southwold and Lowestoft, sharing first-hand memories of growing up in the heart of rural Suffolk.

68: Are you on the list that no one knows about?27 Feb 202600:56:54
Your three hapless hosts sat down with it in mind to record a serious episode about Deer culls, subsidies and fly tipping. Instead they pulled each other off the rails and swan dived into elephant shaped deer and how to discover businesses which may be more aligned with rural life or at least tolerant of rural traditions.

Bonus: Great British Shooting Show 202618 Feb 202600:43:34
As appears to be becoming tradition, Richard P and Callum once again went to the Great British Shooting Show and after a day of wandering the hall, fondling shiny things, eating and drinking rubbish and talking to hundreds....well, probably dozens...of people, they decided to record a little episode about it all. Hear about what they saw, what they liked, what you missed out on, and it may even help you to decide if it's worth you attending next year!

Sacrifice at Christmas : The Tragedy of Solomon Browne19 Dec 202500:51:18
This is a different episode for us, but it's one we felt compelled to share.

On 19th December 1981 a dramatic rescue played out on the English coast, involving a stricken cargo ship being driven towards a rocky shore by a storm. It's an important story of courage, skill, sacrifice and decisions that ultimately led to tragedy which affected an entire community.

Tonight is the anniversary of that incident, and in this episode we pull together the original radio transmissions to tell the story of the crews of the Union Star and the Solomon Browne.

They say that you should only repeat good things, but we decided to rebel and repeat our Christmas Gift Guide format once again this year! If you're reading this in 2035 then I apologise that we have now repeated it 10 times...

Following the usual format, Richard, Callum and Richard have each chosen a gift under £10, one under £100 and one over £100 and then proceed to question or better each others choices (all links below). So if you're struggling to find something for the person you love - why not ignore everything that the guys say and just buy a gift patreon subscription to CountrySlide.

54: One Year of CountrySlide21 Nov 202501:03:37
We're 1!
It's been a fantastic year of recording, editing and reading comments and reviews on the show. We've loved every minute of it and to celebrate we sat down as usual to record and episode, as usual.

This week the guys talk about the news that game dealers in Belgium are no longer going to be taking game birds from the UK (aside from honouring existing contracts) This is possibly just the beginning of a prediction coming true that Europe will no longer be taking game from UK suppliers. This calls into question where the future of shooting lies. To put this into perspective, Negus has found an old edition of the Shooting Times complete with game prices from 1972.

To round out the episode, there's a quick (ish) fire round of questioning to get to know your hosts just a tad better.

53: Wild Trout Trust with Shaun Leonard14 Nov 202501:05:21
Shaun Leonard, director of the Wild Trout Trust talks with the guys about the challenges facing our native trout and what makes them so incredible and able to adapt to conditions worldwide. Our rivers aren't in a great shape, although as Shaun recalls they were once much worse, and it isn't in fact all pollution and run-off. The Wild Trout Trust are involved in improving habitats for wild brown trout (and therefore other fish) around the country through adding in woody debris, removing physical barriers and educating land managers and the general public.

The conversation then turns towards how we can help and the huge variety of citizen science projects out there - from counting flies to collecting water samples, there is something for everyone to get involved with. We've provided links to some of those below.

52: Mental Health with Mark07 Nov 202501:23:14
This week, Richard and Richard are joined by Mark, former Army Chaplain, Church of England minister and farmer, for a thoughtful conversation about faith, farming, and mental health in rural Britain. From Normandy beaches to North Oxfordshire fields, they explore the links between the military and the land, the quiet role of the rural church, and why resilience matters more than resistance. 51: ABBA, Brandecosse and the truth about Waterproofs31 Oct 202500:59:01
Following on from the high level conversation last week, we offer you respite from the effects of nights drawing in and the clocks changing with imagery you never knew you wanted and stories which explain a lot about our hosts. There's also some useful intelligence included about how waterproof fabrics really work, comfortable and durable boots which actually last and some of our plans for the future ("useful" in the loosest sense of the word).

The Patreon only aftershow is dominated by Callum's account of nearly dying on a marsh for a pittance and the latest instalment of Prideaux's tales from North Wales - folk are different around here (in the best ways)

50: Frostbitten with Nigel Vardy24 Oct 202501:29:29
Nigel Vardy is an outdoorsman in every sense of the word; he grew up in the Peak District fishing for his dinner and hunting for his tea and exploring the woodlands around his home. He is now an accomplished mountaineer, adventurer and motivational speaker who recounts how he lost his fingers, toes and nose to frostbite after the weather closed in on an attempt to summit Denali in Alaska.

Richard P and Nigel talk through topics ranging from sizing footwear with no toes, the crossover between mountaineering and field sports, respect for our countryside and wildlife, and the psychology of recovery.
