6: Twas the week before Christmas20 Dec 202401:36:41
A rather long and rambling (no surprise there) episode recorded in the week before Christmas 2024 -  Richard Negus, Callum McInerney-Riley and Richard Prideaux discuss their typical Christmas, past traditions, how taxidermied crows can help to save partridge, and which politician is currently in the bad books....

We won't be back next week but that gives you a chance to listen to this entire episode and hopefully enjoy the festive period.

10: The Accidental Deer Episode24 Jan 202501:00:19
This week the podcast derails early on as Callum entertains the two Richards with his cautionary tale about missing a family bowling trip thanks to a successful stalking trip which gave him a callous. Richard Negus, Callum McInerney-Riley and Richard Prideaux take a winding path to the end of the show with stops to talk about how Negus has made his X account more cheery, the Duke of Bedford, the realities of 'Deer in a Day' courses and the lack of recognition given to rural photographers. The guys may have lost a couple more potential sponsors along the way too...

11: Accidentally Breaking Nature31 Jan 202501:31:35
We did actualy manage to stick to the plan for this episode, although we overran by about 30 minutes because Callum McInerney-Riley kept talking about Milton Keynes.

We also had some listener feedback, which descended into Mills and Boon-style embarasment for Richard Negus.

When we did end up covering the intended topic the three hosts talked about some of the things we all do that create a poorer outcome for nature and conservation - and for once it's not shooting, farming or even hedgelaying.

12: Is Agriculture Evil?07 Feb 202501:28:58
After a bit of talk about starting a book club (but with none of that smutty Mills and Boon stuff) and once Callum McInerney-Riley had finished recapping every mouthful of his meal at Fallow in London, Richard, Richard and Callum finally got into the meat of the show and answering a listener question.

Richard Negus really delved into the history of land management on this one, bringing up dates which everyone had hoped to forget, from the Corn Laws to CAP and ELMS.

It is particularly worthwhile listening to the end of this weeks episode too.

13: Dunnocks and Mullets14 Feb 202500:58:16
This weeks episode is a bit of a rollercoaster right from the off, with Callum McInerney-Riley discovering which photo was used for the cover before it descends into the hosts previous fashion choices and then picking up with the joys of spring.

Richard Negus' provides an education in mullets and the secret life of dunnocks. Amazingly it ended up being less than an hour long!

14: Reedbeds and Thatching with Andy Dodson21 Feb 202501:30:07
This weeks episode is a long one, with Callum McInerney-Riley on the road to scotland it is left to the two Richards to interview our fantastic guest - Andy Dodson.

Andy is not only from a long line of thatchers, but he is also a lecturer and currently studying to become a doctor of reeds (AKA Reedbed management)! The three discuss everything from reedbed conservation, the importance of the reedbed habitat to Bittern and other wildlife, lack of management in the UK, exotic reed, Andy's less good looking brother Chris, the endangered craft and hard job of reed cutting and so much more.

15: No Horses Were Harmed In The Making Of This Episode28 Feb 202501:16:25
Let's be honest, once in a while it's best to just let people run with what springs to mind, particularly these three people.

Beware, this episode may lead to coffee on your keyboard, swerving tractors or people giving you strange looks on the bus. In a nut shell this is an episode about rural life, with a few real-life experiences thrown in along the way. Be prepared for your heart to be warmed, and your sides split.

16: The Women Take over07 Mar 202501:05:37
Producer Amy, Clare Negus and Angharad (director of Hadleigh Show) take the lead on this weeks episode in honour of International Women's Day on 8th March.

Richard asks some insightful questions about being a woman in the countryside, rural life from a different point of view and the possible isolation. Expect ramblings of a different kind as the three ladies talk about the potential problems with women-only groups, cloaks of invisibility and growing up in a time and place where adventures were encouraged.

After last week's rather sensible episode, the guys are back in their respective seats to shake everything back to normal. After several short detours into green children, stealing wood for carving, Stephen Fry, Orford Ness, and stolen drugs....eventually we reach the main topic of clubs and societies in rural communities - all inspired by a recent casting call and speaking gig.

Expect to hear about staircase lining parties, Aldi drinks, port cocktails, technical issues, massive trees, foraging in spring, attack hawks, fashion choices, illegal foraging, who should be in the cabinet next, and cats....

Callum's been making sacrifices for his children but on the plus side got to eat donuts and ice cream before hunting for fossils.
Richard N finally has more to talk about than hedgelaying and visited an excellent restaurant in Lambeth.
Richard P has just about recovered after a week of mini digger hire shenanigans and improving some old drainage ditches for wildlife.

This episode is the result of an invitation to attend a Conservation Communication event in Northumbria along with 7 other people. We were there for a little over 24 hours and taken out to different parts of the upland there to experience the absolute abundance of wildlife.

Rather than writing an essay here, we'll leave it to the people we interviewed to explain the importance of events like these and how we can better communicate and publicise rural life and pursuits of all kinds.

24: Uncommon Ground with Patrick Galbraith02 May 202501:08:56
Following the release of his latest book Uncommon Ground, we invited Patrick Galbraith to talk to Richard P and Callum about what inspired him to write about land access, some of the opinions he encountered in his research and also whether he thinks there is a sweet spot.

Along the way topics covered include the Great Wall of China, the history of land access in the UK - from common land to mass trespass to now, the actual realities of access and the effects that we as humans (along with our four-legged friends) can have on wildlife.

Sorry that this episode is later than usual, it took a long time to edit as the heady rush of being in the same room only 2 days previous seemed to empower your beloved hosts (some more than others!) Leading to many tales and standing on soap boxes.

In this week's episode we talk about La Palombe - THE wild food restaurant in London; Richard Negus' book launch; the complete lack of water in the UK right now; and foxes both urban and rural!

27: Steam Punk Toilets and Gen-Z in the countryside23 May 202500:56:58
A mixed bag of an episode covering hard hitting topics including the benefits our little podcast is having to our listeners mental health - expressed through the medium of Callum reading a thread from X.com; Richard's rural plumbing woes which have lead to a less than ideal but still functional adaptation to the outside loo, and the other Richard sharing his in depth thoughts about a recent poll of Gen-Z to discover how they view the countryside.

The Mullet : How Not to Build a Pointless Website27 May 202500:20:42
Welcome to the new mini-series of CountrySlide Business / Marketing.

There is going to be a new episode each week in which we answer a question from the audience. If you have a question, you can send it in by email to contact@countryslide.co.uk or DM it to us through our social media platforms (the pod, Richard P or Callum) or drop it in the comments below!

This week's question is:
Hi Callum and Richard – I’ve been running a small cut flower business from my family farm for the past three years, mostly through Instagram and a local market stall. I’ve never had a proper website, but now I’m wondering if it’s holding me back. Is it worth the cost and effort to build one, or should I just focus on social media where my audience already is?— Becca, Herefordshire

28: Clarkson's Farm and Rural Diversification30 May 202501:01:05
There is one very small spoiler in this episode, you have been warned!

With the release of the latest series of Clarkson's Farm we struck whilst the iron was hot to bring you an episode which (eventually) gets into some of the interesting features of this hit show. Whether you love or hate it, there is no denying that Clarkson's Farm has had an impact on awareness about farming in the UK, diversification and the pressures on agriculture.

The Mullet : When to put Money into Branding03 Jun 202500:17:38
This week's question is:

"Love the show – it’s the only podcast I can listen to while mucking out! I’ve recently taken over the social media and marketing for our family’s farm diversification business (a mix of glamping and selling beef boxes). I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth getting a proper logo and branding done, or if it’s just a waste of money when we’ve already got a name and some basic Canva graphics. Any thoughts?"— Tom, Carmarthenshire

29: Bad Taxidermy, Childhood Trauma and County Shows06 Jun 202500:58:36
As we really enter into show season and stewards across the nation blow the dust and cobwebs from grandads old bowler hat, we delve into the nature of County Shows nowadays and how they have changed. From ugly garden ornaments to expensive paddling pools, they offer a whole host of ways to spend money - even going so far as hiring Spudman to attend! (don't ask me, I'm just the producer)

The Mullet : Do I need a Professional Photographer?10 Jun 202500:17:27
This week's question is whether to hire a professional photographer or look into other options.

"Hi both - I run a small rural dog grooming business and have been getting by with phone photos for social media, but they just look a bit flat and inconsistent. I’ve been quoted £400 for a local photographer to do a shoot. That’s a lot of money for me, but could it actually help me bring in more (better) clients, or am I being sold a dream?"

- Jess, Northumberland

The guys also discuss some British geography, pick on Paul in his shed and just in general talk about what they have been doing in the past week.

31: Peppering, Cart Sheds and Healthy Food Choices20 Jun 202501:06:32
The main topic for this weeks episode is the mid-season spending review, but we ease you into it with the usual banter. Callum has been creating memorable summer evenings for his kids. Richard P has been out in the woods and cooking up a storm with locally sourced ingredients. Meanwhile Richard Negus has been out and about meeting interesting people like the Duke of Norfolk and Davie Scott.

32: Rupert Lowe's dog and the tree planting conundrum27 Jun 202500:59:19
Social media recently flew into outrage at one man's decision - we talk about perceptions of rural life as viewed through the media, should it only show the highlights or is it better to provide a balanced view of life in the countryside?

Callum has also been working with his suspiciously ChatGPT like glamourous assistant to devise a better tree planting scheme which takes into account life after planting and right species in the right place.

38: Protecting Rural Life with Tim Bonner08 Aug 202500:41:03
We interviewed Tim Bonner, Chief Executive at Countryside Alliance, and asked him about working in/around politics, upcoming policy and legislative changes which will affect shooting, what has changed in the last 20 years, the impacts of social media, and whether or not a cocker spaniel should be retrieving pink-footed geese. All bundled in with some light-hearted banter and chat.

This episode was recorded on the Countryside Alliance stand at The Game Fair with a backdrop of headache inducing orange carpet and background chatter.

39: Farmer Clusters and the Importance of Data with Megan and Lizzie from GWCT15 Aug 202500:41:15
Farmer Clusters have been referenced more times than we can count in the last 38 episodes so we went straight to the source and arranged a conversation with Megan Lock and Lizzie Grayshon from GWCT who facilitate Farmer Clusters, work with waders, monitor wildlife and offer advice to farmers across the UK.

Richard Negus takes the helm for this interview and the three discuss Wild Quail, the problems facing our breeding waders, how the government could help, mapping hedgerow habitat and more.

This episode was recorded behind the GWCT stand at The Game Fair with a backdrop of rented van, low hum of generator and a spaniel who would rather be retrieving.

40: The Cornish Episode with Avian Sandercock22 Aug 202500:37:22
Richard P sat down with Avian Sandercock - regular cohost of the Guns on Pegs podcast, ex-gin distiller, current gin drinker, woodland manager and proud Cornish man.

The pair talk about Cornwall's different coastlines and Avian's struggle to find local apple trees, experimenting with gin flavours - Clotted cream infused gin anyone?, and the realities of being in a syndicate shoot and managing a small woodland. The conversation flows from topic to topic like a river full of pools and gives vibes of a pub chat between friends.
