Nabil Kazi … Make Every Day Count19 May 202402:14:44
Nabil Kazi has traveled to 129 countries   Hey now, I am your host, Ric Gazarian. I am excited to share my conversation with Nabil Kazi.  I connected with Nabil Kazi back in 2021 when he suggested a guest (Nick Butter - episode 95) for Counting Countries.  I guess everything comes full circle as Nabil is a guest on this episode. Nabil and I have been in contact ever since and even connected in person for dinner in Bangkok at my favorite Mexican restaurant, Charlie Browns.  Nabil has had two distinct chapters in his adult life.  Chapter One, an executive in the land of Hollywood and Chapter Two, as a full time traveler.  Maybe we can get some behind-the-scenes Hollywood insights.   Some of you might have heard the tragic news from Bamiyan in Afghanistan.  Nabil and I touch on this but while editing there are some greater details.  Apparently, a tour provider from our 193 community brought a group to Afghanistan.  Three Spaniard travelers and three Afghan locals were shot and killed.  In additional six travelers and Afghans were also injured.  Just a reminder when you ask in a conversation or online, “is it safe?” and many people respond, “I just went it is very safe, just go!”.  Remember it was very safe for that traveler, on that specific day, time, and location.  This is a country of 40 million and 250,000 square miles.  That traveler is not a security expert on Afghanistan.   If you are a listener, you have heard this before … the next Extraordinary Travel Festival will be held on November 15, 2024 in Bangkok.  Discount code BANGKOK of $100, so please purchase your ticket today to lock in your savings at the . Just a reminder for those who are coming or thinking of coming that we will be hosting the NomadMania Awards live in Bangkok on Sunday evening.  This is the great event that NM has been streaming on YouTube for the last several years.  This is a great opportunity to get together and recognize some travelers who are making a difference.  Don’t forget, Sunday evening, November 17 this year.   I would like to thank everyone for their support of Counting Countries, especially my Patrons: Adam Hickman, Barry Hoffner, Bisa Myles, Ted Nims, Simen Flotvik Mathisen, Ed Hotchkiss, Steph Rowe, Lori Pastorelli, Gin, Philippe Izedian, Sunir Joshi, Jorge Serpa, Justine Kirby, Phil “Marmaduke” Marcus, Sonia Zimmermann, Katelyn Jarvis, Carole Southam, Per Flisberg, and Sam Williams for supporting this podcast.  You can support this podcast by going to .  My patrons will hear extra content with Wee Cheng that you will not hear.   And remember, we have a new feature on Counting Countries.  The idea is to celebrate wins in the 193 community and involve more people.  The inspiration came from my friends at Club 100 from Sweden.  They have been recognizing milestones on their great IG account - .  So make sure you follow along.  Today, we will get updates from Ted Nims, Justine “off the beaten path” Kirby, Raiiq Ridwan (former guest and ETF speaker).  You will hear their updates throughout the podcast.  Let’s listen to one now.     I will be asking for travelers to submit audio files to recognize travel accomplishments.  To learn more follow the Counting Countries on and accounts and I will be making future call to actions.  Here are a couple of milestones to recognize now.  And take a look at Nabil’s page on GlobalGaz.com Counting Countries page.  I share his Pakistani passport from when he was a small kid.     I was in Boston for this recording while Nabil was in Cali. Arvi only has 15 countries left and is hoping to finish this quest in the next year.  During his travels, he has visited both Antarctica and the North Pole.  He sailed around Antarctica from New Zealand to Chile, stopping and visiting McMurdo Station via helicopter during his 30 day cruise.  He joined a Russian nuclear ice-breaker as it journeyed to the North Pole.  Arvi shares with us why he is fond of Macedonia, thinks Paris is overrated, and why Nigeria is not one of his favorites.  Arvi tells us about crossing the border from India to Bhutan as he motor-biked in Bhutan in the early 1970s, when tourism did not even exist.  And Arvi will most likely be our first guest who travels to outer space.  He has placed his deposit with Virgin Galactic and heopes to be traveling to space in 2019.  Arvi shares with us what it is like hanging out with Richard Branson who he has met through being a client of VG.             Check out our partner and sponsor: Explore the unique stories from 20 more world-class travelers from various backgrounds and nations and from all walks of life who have tirelessly pursued visiting every country in the world and have filled their lives with a virtually endless amount of adventure. Ellany Lea - 104 countries ... and living as a digital nomad28 Sep 201701:05:35
Ella made a drastic decision after graduating university and starting her first corporate job.  She quit on her 89th day.    Despite having a great opportunity in the corporate world, she realized quickly that she craved a life of independence and freedom.  She ended up living in Rwanda working for a NGO for 6 months.  And this started a transition to becoming a digital nomad and beginning a career as an elite success coach.  This new role allowed her the flexibility to live where she wanted to live as she grew her business.   As she gained more success, she began to travel and explore more often.  Ella shares with us why she loves Thailand, believes Paraguay is interesting, and why she is not fond of Dubai.  We also talk about her upcoming road trip to West Africa.    During this conversation, Ella joined me from Spain while I was in Chicago on Skype.  Please listen in and enjoy. Jakob Øster - 178 countries ... and travels with his family to Somalia and Afghanistan!14 Sep 201701:35:16
A family that travels together stays together.  Jakob travels frequently with his girlfriend and two young children.   Jakob travels often with his girlfriend and two young children.  Family vacations include overland West African road trips, visits to Somaliland, and family excursions to Afghanistan.  His children aged 10 and 8 respectively have traveled to 72 and 55 countries respectively. Jakob also hits the road solo as well.  He recounts witnessing a secretive Satanic ritual in West Africa.  He overviews his attempt to travel overland from Antarctica to the Arctic over 10 months.  Jakob was fortunate to visit Cambodia in the early 90s when the Khmer Rouge still reigned.  He visited Angkor Wat when there were virtually no tourists.  Cambodia was a bit lawless, where travel sometimes required armored cars where the machine gunner's bullets cost extra and where marijuana came for free at your guest house. During this conversation, Jakob joined me from Copenhagen while I was in Chicago on Skype.  Please listen in and enjoy. Favorite travel book: by Khaled Hosseini (about Afghanistan, by the author of The Kite Runner and Under A Thousand Splendid Suns  and by Hemingway.= Favorite travel film:   (because it is funny, has beautiful locations and brilliantly portrays the contrast between everyday working life and adventure). Favorite travel site: App: Google Maps (and Check My Trip, Booking.com, Airbnb, TripAdvisor) Website: flightconnections.com – Lonely Planet Thorn Tree, Wikitravel. Wikipedia. Must carry:  Solo: I almost always carry my extremely small and thin travel pillow and my sarong-sleeping-bag (good for when it is hot or not too clean). Family: We always carry a deck of cards and a game of (and play a hell of a lot).   Favorite food: Two national Danish dishes that my girlfriend cooks very well: “Stegt flæsk og persillesovs” (fried pork belly with potatoes and a parsley sauce) and “flæskesteg med brun sovs” (Danish version of roast pork with gravy). I also like Indian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Italian and Mexican food (I eat pretty much everything). Favorite drink: “BMW” (Baileys Mitt Whiskey) alcohol mixed with alcohol what more can one wish for and Carlsberg because it is probably the best.   Favorite Hotel: There are many. I don’t like fancy, traditional hotels very much since I think they usually have no soul. I usually prefer guesthouses in historical buildings and with the possibility to meet other travelers. One example: , Jaisalmer, Indien – 200 year old “Haveli”. Favorite Airline: Turkish (for being the airline with routes to most individual countries) and for their fresh orange juice (that they have now tragically abandoned!) Randy Williams - 86 countries ... and counting!20 Jul 201701:39:23
Randy is a well-known radio personality who happens to be on a quest to travel to every country in the world. Randy became intrigued with travel while listening to his Spanish teacher’s travel stories.  At the age of 26, he ventured abroad for the first time, and immediately became smitten with Brazil.  He traveled there over 30 times, and lived there for two years.  While discovering Brazil he decided to visit every country in the Americas before the age of 40.  That goal transitioned to visiting all UN countries. Randy enjoys visiting those countries which are less visited.  He spent New Year Eve’s in Tripoli.  He also recently visited South Sudan, Burkina Faso, Venezuela, Nauru, and North Korea.  Yet, he has not been to Greece, Turkey or Egypt.  On the podcast Randy shares with us many travel tales.  Randy was stopped in the Tripoli airport when departing and had several items confiscated from his bag.  When crossing into Burundi, he picked up a police escort who did not leave his side, and encouraged Randy to buy many drinks for him and his friend in the bar.  Randy also shares why he hates the city of Clorinda, Argentina.  And he tells us where to find the best beach vendor in the world. Randy began his radio career as a teenager.  Today, his syndicated radio show, Sunday Night Slow Jams, is heard in over 130 cities and in nine different countries.  In fact, Randy visits radio stations when traveling and has made some sales of his show.  Randy was also featured on Shark Tank.  Check out the links below.  And please listen in and enjoy the show.      Check out our partner and sponsor: Explore the unique stories from 20 more world-class travelers from various backgrounds and nations and from all walks of life who have tirelessly pursued visiting every country in the world and have filled their lives with a virtually endless amount of adventure. Eric Nguyen - 193 countries ... at the age of 24!06 Jul 201701:11:31
At the age of 24, Eric visited his last UN country beating Guinness World Record Holder, James Asquith.   Eric grew up in northern California, the son of Vietnamese immigrants.  He had the opportunity of international travel with his family growing up.  But his travel began in earnest when he went backpacking in East and Southeast Asia when he was just 18.  He was inspired to visit every country in the world and attempt to break the world record for three reasons.  First, Eric was inspired by world traveler and former guest, Gunnar Garfors.  Second, Eric learned about James Asquith, the Guinness World Record Holder at the time, the youngest person to travel to every country in the world.  But the final catalyst was a meeting with his college professor who encouraged him to see the world when he was young. Eric at times threw caution into the wind when pursuing his quest.  He couchsurfed in Libya, while local militias learned of his presence.  He had a very challenging time in West Africa.  He was in a motorcycle accident.  Eric also caught malaria and was robbed while he recovered in his hospital room.  Eric crossed into Yemen at the Omani border.  Later, he attempted to return to Oman, but was denied entry.  For five days, Eric was held in a detention center at the border.  Eric celebrated in May when he arrived in his last country of Eritrea.   Check out our partner and sponsor: Explore the unique stories from 20 more world-class travelers from various backgrounds and nations and from all walks of life who have tirelessly pursued visiting every country in the world and have filled their lives with a virtually endless amount of adventure. Dustin balanced his career as a dentist while completing all 193 UN countries and then some. Dustin grew up in small town America yet ended up living in Singapore working as a dentist.  Despite a childhood of limited travel, he spread his travel wings after settling in Singapore and began to discover the region.  Dustin shares with us an amazing collection of travel stories.  He crossed the border into Syria from Lebanon as an invited guest of Syria.  Dustin was the keynote speaker at a medical conference in Damascus.  He was banned from entering Israel and had to hire an attorney so he could attempt another visit.  Dustin couchsurfed in Burundi and ended up in jail.  He met his host in Afghanistan on Tinder.  Dustin tells us why the Maldives is one of his least favorite countries.  And Dustin also gave back when traveling, including spending two days providing dental treatment to half of the population of Pitcairn Island.      Check out our partner and sponsor: Explore the unique stories from 20 more world-class travelers from various backgrounds and nations and from all walks of life who have tirelessly pursued visiting every country in the world and have filled their lives with a virtually endless amount of adventure. Thanos is on a quest to visit every country in the world and has already visited 146 UN countries.   Thanos initial focus in life was education and business, not travel.  In fact, one of his first overseas trips was a basic package trip to Sri Lanka.  After completing his doctorate in theoretical physics and starting his own business in India his life eventually transitioned into a life of travel.  Now adventures include summiting the seven summits with three already completed.  Thanos also enjoys road trips like a 3 week, 3000 km motorbike trip across Mongolia.  Thanos also appreciates a good land crossing such as when he entered Mali and ended up spending the night in jail.  Thanos will also share with you why he needs to go back to Laos.  Please listen in and enjoy.            Check out our partner and sponsor: Explore the unique stories from 20 more world-class travelers from various backgrounds and nations and from all walks of life who have tirelessly pursued visiting every country in the world and have filled their lives with a virtually endless amount of adventure.   More about Thanos Koukoutsakis: Born in: Greece Passports from: Greek Favorite travel book: Favorite travel film: Documentaries about mountaineering and the arctic explorers. Audrey Walsworth - 193 countries ...  and 324/325 on the TCC List!27 Apr 201701:28:44
Audrey is a member of an elite club of female travelers who have traveled to all 193 UN countries.   I thought it was important to have a member of this club to speak on the podcast in regard to    the media’s claim that is the first woman to travel to every country in the world.  This false narrative has been embraced by the public.  During the podcast, we speak about this controversy and Audrey shares her perspective on being a woman who has accomplished this feat.  Audrey’s first international foray took place in 1969 as she traced her ethnic roots to Soviet Lithuania and recounts how a group of Soviet officers serenaded her.  Other stories include visiting China during the 1980s and almost being shot in Ethiopia.  Please listen in on how Audrey as a mother and grandmother accomplished this amazing quest.   Check out our partner and sponsor: Explore the unique stories from 20 more world-class travelers from various backgrounds and nations and from all walks of life who have tirelessly pursued visiting every country in the world and have filled their lives with a virtually endless amount of adventure. Lee Abbamonte - 193 countries ... and the North and South Pole!30 Mar 201701:35:42
Lee has led an incredible life, traveling to all 193 countries and being the youngest American to accomplish this feat at that time.  And he is only 6 territories away from completing the Travelers Century Club. Lee travels in style whether it is entering his 193rd country under a hail of gunfire or hanging out with Prince Harry in Antarctica.  Lee grew up in modest circumstances and began his travel with a semester abroad in London.  This trip and the loss of his friends on 9/11 sparked his interest in travel.  Lee was motivated to complete the Travelers Century Club after he read an article about Charles Veley accomplishing the TCC list.  He shares with us the high and lows of traveling in Africa.  Lee recounts summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro and spotting lions in the Serengeti.  And also, how even the ATMs in Nigeria are in on the scam.  Lee shares his journey to off-the- beaten path places like Tuvalu (awful experience) and Pitcairn Islands (rewarding experience).  Please listen in and enjoy.                   Check out our partners and sponsors: Explore the unique stories from 20 more world-class travelers from various backgrounds and nations and from all walks of life who have tirelessly pursued visiting every country in the world and have filled their lives with a virtually endless amount of adventure. João Paulo Peixoto - 193 countries ... and wedding ceremonies in 8 different countries!16 Mar 201701:00:24
João is a quintuple threat. He is a professor, an entrepreneur, a father of seven, a romantic, and a believer in all of the world’s religions.   The professor shares his amazing stories of traveling the world.  As a romantic he has married his wife eight times in different ceremonies around the world, including their first in Addis Ababa with a honeymoon in South Sudan.  He spent time in a Yemeni jail cell that conveniently included wifi allowing for some Facebook updates. He avoided being strip searched in the Congo with a well placed bribe.  And the professor traveled the Karakoram Highway, one of the world’s  highest paved roads in the world.  The trip ended in Pakistan where he raised thousands of Euros to help Pakistanis who were affected by the severe floods.  The professor’s travels began in earnest when he began competing with his cousin.  The professor has been to all 193 UN countries, 292 places on the TCC list, and is the 35th most traveled on The Best Traveled.  He recently returned from the British Indian Ocean Territory via ship from the Seychelles. This military island is one of the most difficult places to travel to in the world.    Check out our partner and sponsor: Explore the unique stories from 20 more world-class travelers from various backgrounds and nations and from all walks of life who have tirelessly pursued visiting every country in the world and have filled their lives with a virtually endless amount of adventure. Sepp Kaiser - 190 countries ... on a single 10 year trip!02 Mar 201701:28:27
Sepp left his family farm in Austria in 1985, and he did not see his family until 1995, when he returned after visiting every country in the world.   Sepp is a vagabond at heart as he traveled the world with his guitar.  He traveled non-stop for 19 years as he traveled to every country in the world at that time (190 countries).  He nearly lost his life on more than one occasion, as he battled gun wielding attackers in Nigeria, and hepatitis in Angola.  He was both drugged and arrested in China prior to its opening to the west.  Sepp also shares a different perspective since his travels took place pre-internet, with all of the difficulties from communications to managing money.  He shares with us the beauty of Libya under Gaddafi.  His ten year journey, ended as he walked the final few kilometers to his family farm, as he nailed his backpack to the wall, to mark the end of his journey.            Check out our partner and sponsor: Explore the unique stories from 20 more world-class travelers from various backgrounds and nations and from all walks of life who have tirelessly pursued visiting every country in the world and have filled their lives with a virtually endless amount of adventure. Dave’s travel and life has morphed into one collective.  He began his travel career after graduation with the start of his travel blog, and has been travelling ever since.    Over the past 20 years Dave has managed to visit 140 UN recognized countries in a quest to discover and experience true travel.  He does not have a specific stated goal of visiting every country, but through his desire to discover the world he has already managed to visit 140 countries, with a target of visiting ten plus new countries a year.  Dave’s other quest is to visit every winery in Napa Valley.  He has visited approximately 850 of the 1,000 wineries.  Dave shares with us how he nearly perished on his first true international trip as he trekked to Everest Base Camp and had to be carried off the mountain after being felled by altitude and food sickness.  This challenging event spurred him on to travel even more.  Dave shares more stories from traveling independently in Papua New Guinea to backpacking in Yemen.  Dave also provides some insights on running his travel blog for 20 years and the benefits of “free” travel. Lawrence Williams - 152 countries ...  and spreading his Uncle’s ashes in every country!20 Jan 201701:37:10
Lawrence is on a quest to travel to every country in the world while honoring his uncle, by spreading his ashes in every country.   Uncle James was a free spirit and travel pioneer who inspired Lawrence to travel even more.  Lawrence lost his uncle to cancer and wanted to honor his memory.  Lawrence is now traveling to every country in the world as well as the 325 regions noted in Travelers' Century Club to spread his ashes.  Lawrence has braved the streets of Mogadishu and has been detained by North Korea while pursuing this quest.  Lawrence is based in The Gambia where he moved with Uncle James in the 1990s.  Their goal was to protect and preserve the environment and culture and along the way they built a beautiful lodge.  For years, they lived off the land, camping in the forest, with no running water or electricity.  Today, Lawrence joins me on Skype from England while I am in Boston.  Please listen in and enjoy. Anthony is on a quest to visit all 193 countries in the world.  And he plans to accomplish this goal as the first person in a wheelchair.    Anthony is an incredibly impressive individual who has not let physical disabilities dictate his life.  Despite being in a wheelchair he has managed to travel to 20% of the world’s countries on his quest to visit all 193.  He shares with us the challenges of being disabled in developing countries with two heartfelt stories.  What stands out most is his positive and can-do attitude.  Anthony is an inspiration whether you are a traveler or not.   More about Anthony William: Born in: I was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, which is a city in the North East of England. Passports from: British Passport Favorite travel book: As much as I love reading and as much as I also love traveling, I've never actually combined the two and read a travel book. Favorite travel film: Perhaps it would either be something like Into the Wild or Life of Pi. Favorite travel site: It's probably dreadfully unoriginal but I would say my favorite travel related app is the couchsurfing app. Must carry: Recent addition to my carry-on baggage – an iPad Pro – really handy for writing on the road and is much smaller than my old laptop. Favorite food: Vegetarian Lasagna or Spaghetti. Favorite drink: Pineapple and Coconut water. Favorite Airline: I think the best airline I've flown on so far way one of these three: Air NZ, Xiamen Airline and Oman Air. Favorite Hotel: I quite enjoy staying at the Marriott whenever I can afford it or snag some free accommodation. Overall though I've stayed in way too many hotels to specifically pinpoint a favorite. At the young age of only 23, William has made his way to over three quarters of the world’s countries! William began traveling at a young age with his family, including a 6 week cruise from the UK through Australia via the Suez Canal.  He took his first independent trip to Scotland via train.  He has only 39 countries until he visits every country in the world.  William has also created a list of approximately 12,000 places in the world. He plans and hopes to visit these places over his lifetime.  William also has a penchant to visit some of the most remote corners of the globe including the Russian Arctic and  Tristan da Cunha.   More about William Baekeland: Born in: United Kingdom Passports from: Republic of Ireland and United Kingdom Favorite Travel Book: I like historic accounts of colonial expeditions. One which ones to mind is Richard Burton's 'Wanderings in West Africa from Liverpool to Fernando Po'. Good luck finding a copy, it took me a few years. Mike Spencer Bown - 193 countries Mike is a true traveler and explorer, who over a twenty plus year time period has traveled to every country in the world. Mike shared with me some incredible travel tales, including a road trip with a nun in a war-torn, African country.   Mike has been on the road for over twenty years, exploring and discovering the remote corners of our planet.  He travels slow and espouses a simpler lifestyle with all of his belongings in one bag.     More about Mike Spencer Bown:   Born in: Canada Passports from: Canada Favorite travel book:  I like old Jack Vance fantasy travel books such as and .  Also, early travel accounts such as the .   Favorite travel site:   I’m kinda old school, not a big user of the internet. I don’t travel with electronics, not even a phone or camera. Must carry: Mosquito net, a Swiss Army knife, Flagyl (for ) and Coartem ( for ).  I bring a collared shirt for embassy visits.  I also bring an outfit similar to what an NGO or U.N. inspector would wear, including clipboard for impersonating officials to get past roadblocks. And finally a journals for writing in. Favorite food: Any kind of exotic fruit or fish. Favorite drink:  .  Chinese whisky with ‘special’ herbs. Favorite Airline:  The cheaper the better. For example, I liked those old flying in Iran. Favorite Hotel:  I like to find one that used to be the best hotel in the city, but say, in the 1920s, and nothing has been done to upgrade or refurbish it, so it's a charming semi-ruin, in the $5 to $10 a night range.
