| 216: How to Sell 1 Million Books in 24 Hours [A Gary Vee and NFT Case Study] | 21 Sep 2021 | 00:13:33 | |
On August 27th, 2021 at 5pm EST (that’s 1pm my time in Cali), Gary Vaynerchuk went live on YouTube and Instagram (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlcsdCsBR3U) to announce a 24-hour only opportunity to his millions of fans and followers...involving NFTs in exchange for book purchases.
By the following day, his new book Twelve and a Half: Leveraging the Emotional Ingredients Necessary for Business Success was the #1 bestselling book across all of Amazon around the world (while on presale). It sold so many that Barnes & Noble broke for a lot of us trying to buy.
As I record this in mid-September, the book is no longer #1 in all of Amazon, that’s how the rankings work -- they change almost hourly -- but there is a lot we authors can learn from what Gary did to write and promote his book.
But let me backup and define a few things for you…
Who is Gary Vee? Gary Vaynerchuk is a Belarusian-American entrepreneur, author, speaker, and Internet personality. He is a co-founder of the restaurant reservation software company Resy and Empathy Wines. First known as a wine critic who expanded his family's wine business, Vaynerchuk is now more known for his work in digital marketing and social media as the chairman of New York-based communications company VaynerX, and as CEO of VaynerX subsidiary VaynerMedia.
NFT: Non-fungible token You may have heard this term floated around a lot lately. It’s all the rage in the cryptosphere. Skeptics call it “buying jpegs. My in-laws call it a ponzi scheme.
But what it really is is a digital collectible tied to a smart contract that cannot be destroyed. Who created it? All this and more is recorded on the blockchain, which is a digital ledger of transactions recorded on multiple computers around the world so that no one person or entity can alter the records. Oh, and non-fungible is just a confusing way of saying unique. If you trade 1 US dollar for another 1 US dollar, you have not changed anything. Dollars are fungible. If you trade 1 cryptopunk for 1 curiocard, you have very much changed things. These are non-fungible...they are unique. It’s all a big deal. It’s the wave of the future, if you ask me. If this is your first time hearing about it, I really think you should put in some hours to research and learn more. It will (and already is) affecting everything we do in life. Don’t be an old fuddy duddy and say it’s all just a silly trend kids these days are into. It’s not.
NFT examples To help, for this convo, to make what an NFT is more clear, let’s look at a few examples.
Are pieces of digital art of apes with different facial expressions, backgrounds, and accessories. The cheapest one as I record this is 33.5 ETH, or about $117,000. There is no utility -- or ability to use the token -- that I am aware of. However, owners of BAYC tokens get ‘airdropped’ (aka rewarded with) additional tokens that also have value because they are in demand by the market.
The leading conference on the topic of NFTs is held each year in New York City, and, as we would expect, the ticket to get in is an NFT. Using NFTs as tickets into an event in real life is an easy example to wrap our heads around potential ‘utility’ of a token. Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, recently said on a podcast interview that tickets to all games would soon be tokenized. Gary Vee jumped into the NFT space in May as well. His project is called VeeFriends and it comes with access to his new VeeCon conference in 2022, 2023, and 2024, which gives it real utility. Some tokens also have direct access to him in groups or in one-on-one sessions like courtside Nick's games. But where the big promise from Gary lies is in the I.P. of the characters. He plans to turn the drawings for the tokens into the next “disney.” -------
So, back to our story about Gary selling over 1 million books in 24 hours. Starting in early 2021, Gary told his followers to buy up ETH when it was about $1400 to $1800. Then, for months before launch, Gary educated his audience on NFTs, the blockchain, what wallets like MetaMask were and how to set them up to be ready to buy NFTs, and more. Then Gary launched his VeeFriends in May of 2021. For the majority of the 10,255 tokens that he sold, you could buy them for 0.5 to 3 ETH (that’s about $1750 to $10,500 in today’s value with ETH around $3500). As I record this 4 months later, the cheapest VeeFriend is 18ETH (or about $63,000). That’s a 36x return...and Gary swears he’s just getting started… Flash forward to the book offer.Gary went live on a Friday afternoon in the summer to say that for ever 12 books someone purchased in the following 24 hours, she or he would receive 1 surprise NFT after the books ship in November. Hence, selling over 1 million copies in 24 hours.
-------
TAKEAWAYS I personally don’t have as big an audience as Gary. Likely you listening don’t either. So maybe selling 1 million books in 24 hours is something unattainable for us right now. Nevertheless, we can employ his tactics to a scale that works for us.
...Gary created a Discord (like a giant chat room) where he shared these special tips and info completely for free, but only with true fans who took the time to join it
...Gary went out of his way to make sure true fans got first crack at his NFT drop (before whales with big bank accounts could swoop in and buy everything up) ...And he’s been working to make VF grow in value already
...Gary doesn’t just promote and ghost, he stays actively involved...this builds that know, like, and trust factor
...Gary has been building rapport and trust for yearrrsssss...he didn’t just emerge out of nowhere and expect people to trust him. ...You have to have patience and build.
...Gary is jumping on the wave of crypto and NFTs early. How can we make our books themselves NFTs? Could someone buy our book as an NFT and be able to sell it later? ---- There is so much to be learned by watching Gary and following in his footsteps when it comes to books, business, and NFTs. If you want to learn and see more, I’m attaching links to all that I mentioned in here about Gary’s incredible book frenzy. And if you're wondering...I will have a crap ton of books in my garage come November. When you speak, I hope your audience believes too. | 111: The Psychology of “Fake It Til You Make It” as a Public Speaker and Author - Quick Tip | 06 Feb 2018 | 00:06:58 | |
Fake is the new Real? Check out this week’s quick tip to find out how to embrace faking your skills as you build them up! Check out today’s transcript! The Psychology of “Fake It Til You Make It” as a Public Speaker and Author Some people hear the work ‘fake,’ myself included, and instantly feel a gut reaction that that is bad to do. The last thing I want to be seen as is a fake, a fraud, a scammer. However, paradoxically, we become things by action. We cannot become unless we do. For example...you become an author by writing. You become a speaker by speaking. So, I truly believe that if ‘faking confidence until you build confidence’ works to get you to take action, embrace it and GO! As a personal example, I decided to speak about 10 days ago at the Ultimate Stage Experience put on by Tamara Thompson and Danielle Gomez of Serious Take Productions. I haven’t spoken on a stage in a while so I was feeling nervous and even admittedly had a little crying breakdown with my husband the Sunday before feeling like, “I am going to suck -- I’m not ready -- I’m going to embarrass myself!” No matter how great my photos are on Instagram, sometimes I hit brick walls too and question my abilities. Luckily, I have a great husband and he said, “Laura, I know it’s going to be great.” By the way he said it, I knew it wasn’t just half-hearted platitudes. So I asked, “How do you knooow that though?” And he replied gently, “Because you put your whole heart and brain into EVERYTHING you do, so how could it not be good. You’ll make sure of it.” That external reinforcement was enough to get me back on track and feeling ready to take one step forward the next day, the next, and the next...until Friday when I delivered my talk and actually had the entire room cracking up first, then inspired next. I told them my “Print Your Own Shirt” story that I shared with you podcast listeners back in podcast episode 108. Then, I told them about how I channeled my inner ‘Senior Queen’ and printed my own shirt which read “best selling published author” when I took massive action and wrote and self-published my first book at the end of 2016...that one action that has lead to so many more opportunities, clarity, and confidence that I never expected. Now, I’m telling you about this recent experience from 10 days ago because even though I was feeling nerves and stage fright, I decided to ‘fake it til i make it.’ The more speaking I do, the more comfortable I will be on stage, and the better speaker I will become. But if I just sit in my office googling tips on speaking and never actually do it until I feel “100% ready,” I legitimately will never get to my goal. Speaking of speaking, I am speaking again this coming weekend at the Massive Success Breakthrough event here in San Diego. Shoot me an email if you are in the area and want to come, I have a few free tickets I can get you. Laura@CopyThatPops.com And keep your eye on my Instagram and Facebook accounts...I’ll try to share behind the scenes where you can watch me hopefully more making it than faking it! Haha Now, for you… If you are like me and wanting to do more public speaking, well, go do more public speaking. It’s the only way. Reach out to a local high school, college, Rotary Club, or Toastmasters and get practice with audiences who do not feel as intimidating to you than where you want to end up (say...at SMMW, or Thrive, or T&C...etc). If you are still dreaming of writing a book and becoming an author, well, open up a Google doc or grab a pen and paper and start writing. Start with just brainstorming, idea dumping, journaling if you are still not sure what your book will be about. Action begets action. Do to be. Instead of “Think and Grow Rich,” it could be “Write and Grow Into an Author.” :) Oh, and one last thought on my brain...if you are in the San Diego area...I’m been journaling about putting on a 10 week hands on workshop where only 10 people plus me will meet in person and digitally to make everyone in the group Amazon best selling authors by the end of it. You’ll get your message out, instant credibility, and lots of media attention for your business...all of which will lead to more traffic, sales, and confidence for more. Please email me if you are in the SD area and interested in more details. Laura@CopyThatPops.com is the email again :) But no matter what you are working on to move your business forward, remember that it’s okay to sometimes “fake it until you make it!” | |||

| 215: Less is More Quick Copy Tip with 2 Copy Editing Examples | 13 Jul 2021 | 00:04:59 | |
Hello copy poppers! Long time no talk...but we are back today with a quick writing tip for you inspired by two often-heard quotes:
When I first heard these sayings, I thought they were wrong. In school, the hardest assignments seemed to be the long term papers 15 or more pages long. But as a former teacher, professional copywriter, ghostwriter, and all around writing nerd for internet copy, I’ve come to learn they are profoundly true. I admittedly have the habit of ‘over communicating in writing.’ I tend to add too many details in emails -- and try to keep in mind that if something can be said with fewer words, it should be. Let me give some concrete examples for you… COPY EDITING EXAMPLES
You may write something like this:
(true story for yours truly!) This is a perfectly good sentence with 22 words. But can we tighten it up without losing any meaning or important information? How about… “I graduated in 2003 from UCLA with a degree in Psychology and a minor in German.” That’s shorter! With 16 words now. We shaved off 6 words...or 27%. Not bad and no meaning was lost.
Say you are writing up some information about your company for your website or short social media bio. You could write something like this: “At XYZ Media Company, we know the importance of leveraging social media to grow your business in this increasingly online and global economy. This is the reason why we love helping businesses create and execute strategies that help them grow their businesses through attracting new leads, converting sales, and building brand loyalty.” This is a lovely description from a company who gets it! But at about 52 words, it looks like a big paragraph that most people may say ‘ain’t nobody got time for that’ and skip over reading it. How about… “Leveraging social media is essential to grow your business. We help you create and execute strategies to grow by attracting new leads, converting more sales, and building brand loyalty.” This version is 29 words, so 44% shorter. Plus, we changed 3rd person words like “their” and “them” to 1st person words like “you” and “your.” I also cut out things like “At XYZ Media Company” under the assumption that if someone is reading it on your website, they know what you are called -- you don’t have to restate it. And also “in this increasingly online and global economy” because if your audience doesn’t already know this is happening, I’d be shocked.
Send me a piece of copy you’d like cleaned up to be shorter and more punchy. I may feature a quick edit of yours in a future episode! --- Hope these copy editing examples helped inspire you to look for words you could cut to improve your writing online. It takes more time to trim the fat, but it’s worth it! xo Laura PS: To access full show notes, please click here: Podcast Shownotes for "Less is More Quick Copy Tip". | |||

| 099: Persuasive Holiday Card Writing Quick Tip | 14 Nov 2017 | 00:08:21 | |
It’s time to bring (sexy) snail mail back! Do you remember the last non-electronic card or letter you received?? I bet it stands out above all digital correspondence. Amiright? A few exciting highlights include:
Hey there! Welcome to Copy That Pops! I’m LaptopLaura, your tall Math & Psychology teacher turned serial entrepreneur….and host of this podcast! These days I’m also a podcast launch and best-selling book launch strategist. I help elite entrepreneurs and business create and launch powerful podcasts (a biiiig influencer client to be announced soon!) as well as best-selling books! FUN FACT! So far, Alex Berger went live on 11/6 (with his book Practical Curiosity: The Guide to Life, Love & Travel) and hit #1 bestseller in all three of his categories + #1 & hot new release in 3 other countries -- Germany, France, and Spain! Kolton Krottinger went live on 11/10 (with his book Anxiety Hackers: Learn The 3 Secrets That Made My Anxiety Disappear In 17 Days) and hit #1 bestseller in all three of his categories! Next up we have, WANT TO JOIN US? For a first step, I’d love to personally invite you to join our free Facebook Group called the Best-Selling Author Posse. It will redirect you to the Facebook group. Can’t wait to meet you in there and support you on your writing a book journey. TODAY’S QUICK TIP Okay, but let’s get to today’s quick tip all about persuasive holiday card sending. Since Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, all the winter holidays are coming up, you may have it on your mind to send out holiday cards to family, friends, and even business connections. Each year I procrastinate doing this and usually do not. Often I just send out cards to those who sent something to me! (which ties into some research I want to tell you about, by the way!) But let’s talk about why writing handwritten cards (or at least signing your name to cards with some customization, even if printed with the same message...though not as effective) is arguably very important for business and personal… THING 1 Last week I had quite some adventures! I flew to NYC for 3 days to attend a presentation at the Teachable headquarters by Jess Lindgren, the creator and CEO of Gal Friday 612 and the host of the Art of Correspondence. Her presentation was moving indeed. I reminded me just how rare it is to get nice snail mail, so it is therefore more treasured, more meaningful, more memorable than just an email or text. She relaid story after story of incredible relationships strengthened because of taking the time to send postcards, handwritten notes, birthday cards, and holiday cards. It got me motivated to do more of it and I have already started since last week! In fact, I attended on Saturday an incredible mastermind meeting with 10 other female entrepreneurs who are rocking their worlds...lead by Dana Malstaff of Boss Mom. We all then glammed up and went to a charity gala in Beverly Hills to support the Just Like My Child Foundation. I could record a whole other podcast just on the important work that group is doing to educate, empower, and protect young girls and women in Uganda! But to tie this story into handwritten notes, I just popped in the mail before sitting down to record this podcast a thank you note to Dana for organizing the wonderful day and to Allison Melody -- host of the unbelievable Food Heals podcast -- who invited me to stay in her guest house in West Hollywood. I included some stickers with the Copy That Pops podcast artwork on them and wrote a handwritten, heartfelt thank you for their kindness and efforts this weekend. I hope it brightens their day even just a smidge when they receive them! THING 2 Because I knew I’d be on a plane for long stretches of time, I downloaded two audiobooks by Dr. Robert Cialdini, a psychology professor at ASU. The books are called Influence and Pre-Suasion. I am geeking out so hard and relistening to them both AGAIN. Stay tuned for more research and learnings from these books to inspire future solo podcasts from me. But one in particular I wanted to share was about sending holiday cards. They did an experiment where they sent family holiday cards in the mail to complete strangers and were SHOCKED at just how many they received back! I’m sure the people who got the card were thinking, “Honey, do you know Jim Smith? I can’t remember him or his wife June and their two kids. But they sent us a card...I suppose we should send one too!” In one instance, two families sent each other holiday cards for 10 years without any other interactive before or during. Then, when the son of one family was going to college and needed a place to stay for 2 weeks while the dorm was under constructions...they called up the parents of the other family and asked if he could stay with them and they said yes! Essentially, they let the 18 year old son of total strangers (except for holiday cards) stay in their home! The punchline psychological principle to all this has to do with reciprocity. When we receive something, we feel compelled to react in kind and it deepens our relationship. So, putting the inspiration from Gal Friday 612 together with the research findings of Dr. Cialdini, I encourage us all to send out holiday cards this year to not only friends and family, but also to business colleagues, associates, mentors, and people you’d LIKE to deepen a connection with. You never know where a handwritten card may lead! And if you want to send me anything in the mail, you can send to: haha! -------- See you next week when we’ll find more ways to write copy that pops together...

I help elite entrepreneurs and business create and launch powerful podcasts (a biiiig influencer client to be announced soon!) as well as best-selling books! In fact, a student in my free Facebook Group and course is going live TODAY as I record this! His name is Alex Berger and his book is called: Practical Curiosity: The Guide to Life, Love & Travel As I record this (on Monday Nov 6th 2017) it is #1 in his first category and #4 and #7 in his other two...those numbers are dropping (in a great way) so by the end of the day I expect #1 in all three categories in the US as well as in other countries! It will redirect you to the Facebook group. Can’t wait to meet you in there! ---- Okay, so the topic of today’s podcast is a Quick Grammar Tip...and I have a very treacherous story to tell you … it’s a bit gruesome, so hold on to your hats! ... But first, a quick shout out to another tool made ONLY to benefit YOU! I’ve been taking my blog very seriously again -- only fitting since I’m a nerd for writing! -- so I want to invite you to head to CopyThatPops.com/blog and check it out if you have not yet. Some recent articles to help you include: - How to Format a Book for Amazon Book Publishing: Kindle Format, CreateSpace, and More - Book Cover Design Tips: How to make a book cover even if you’re not a designer Some titles may change slightly over time because I am really playing with the keywords for long-term SEO (search engine optimization) growth! That’s the topic of next week’s podcast and you do NOT want to miss it...a special presentation from Andy Steven of High Voltage SEO. That episode boasts detailed specifics of what you can do to optimize your website and an amazing Aussie accent. So, look out for episode 099 coming next Tuesday! And if any of those articles call your name, head over to CopyThatPops.com/blog -- so many people are telling me the blogs are more like legit books or mini courses and super helpful. I hope you find the same! --- Well then, back to our Quick Grammar Tip and that Halloween-like story… As this episode goes live on Tuesday the 7th, I am flying from San Diego to NYC to see friends old and new including my friend since 7th grade Laura Eidlitz who has a PhD in Psychology, Victor Adefuye (who was on this podcast way back in episode 23...it’s a very popular one called Managing Psychology, Emotion, & Ego for Success with Victor Adefuye. And you can find it at CopyThatPops.com/023), and Jess Lindgren who is both the creator of GalFriday612 and the Executive Assistant to the one and only Pat Flynn. It is with this last friend Jess, that this episode today is partly inspired. Last month she was in town for several events -- she lives in Minnesota right now -- and we got together for bagels and coffee in downtown San Diego before the Pat Flynn mastermind meeting. As we talked, we realized we are both nerds for great writing and made jokes about poor grammar use as only nerd would. But no laughing matter is my story… It takes place back in the year 1885. This was long before cell phones, computers, and -- crap wait -- typewriters were around but not widely used...okay, so …Back in 1885 there lived a very peculiar family of 3 generations in an isolated farm house. What made them especially odd was they never spoke aloud to each other and would only scribble handwritten notes. They lived such a routine life that not much communication was really needed and they got along well enough. The other thing was that the son in the family, Lurch, he was an adult but had a child-like mind and took everything very literally but without question. His mother Bertha didn’t mind that one bit because it kept things working smoothly without conflict. Well, one dark and stormy night, Bertha was in the kitchen toiling over pots and pans to prepare supper. She saw Lurch walk by and motioned for him to come hither. She quickly scribbled a note with just four words on it and nodded her head toward the stairs. Lurch looked at the note bewildered but without question, turned and walked up the steps to where his Grandmother lay resting. Bertha, consumed in cooking and distracted by the wind and rain outside didn’t hear the screaming of her mother. A few minutes later Lurch returned with blood around his mouth and streaked across his chest, holding bits of body parts from his slain grandmother. Bertha screamed in shock, disgust, and fury. “What have you done!?” she shouted uncharacteristically breaking her usual silence. Lurch, confused, pulled out the slip of paper and held it out, “Time to eat Grandma” it read… But, it was missing a comma after the word eat! Bertha learned the hard way that very night just how important punctuation is. Good grammar saves lives. --- Well, with this gruesome and sad but most likely true story, I want to commend you for listening to this podcast and searching for more insight on improving your writing. It’s more important than you may think. See you next week when we’ll find more ways to write copy that pops (and is found by search engines!)...

| 094: The Psychology of Snippet Text Copy [Quick Tip] | 10 Oct 2017 | 00:12:48 | |
Words (even if few) really do matter! Here's a quick tip on writing preview text or snippet copy that captivate the reader immediately... even if they only see the first few words on a Google search or in iTunes! A few exciting highlights include:
Here are the (loose) transcripts from this episode, in case you'd like to read as you listen or see the images referenced during the show: Welcome to Copy That Pops!...I’m your host LaptopLaura. And lately we’ve had some great but LONG interviews with a heavy focus on book writing. I wanted to share a short episode with you around psychology of a spot with very short writing.. And that is a ‘snippet’ or ‘preview’ text. We’ll look at two examples to demonstrate...but keep this in mind for any spot where just a short bit of text is displayed…. Two examples:
Some good things it tells me are…
So, before making any changes to the post, i just added a keyword of “coaching”...that’s a bit too broad for great SEO, but I’m going to use it in this example because it’s a keyword that showed up in the title already.
Now, it gives me even more advice for how to improve like: The big one for our purposes on this show today is “No meta description has been specified. Search engines will display copy from the page instead.” So, right now it reads: “Story: 10 seconds left in the game…” So, let’s change the meta description to Now I’m getting more green lights showing that things are more optimized for search engines. Plus, I tried to write the meta description in a way that would attract readers to want to click on the post to read more and listen to the show. Keep in mind both bots for search engines and humans for being enticing! If you want to learn even MORE about SEO...keep your eye out for an upcoming, in depth episode with Andrew Steven of High Voltage SEO. Where I know 20%, he knows 100%! | 091: Mad Profits Using Smart Sales Psychology with Ryan Stewman | 19 Sep 2017 | 00:46:55 | |
Sales psychology. Do you have to be born good at it? Or, if not, how can we all improve our sales — the right way!? That’s the theme behind this week’s interview with esteemed guest, the Hardcore Closer Ryan Stewman! He takes a no B.S. approach to life and today reveals valuable tips, tricks, and practices to get you mad profits using smart sales psychology in your writing, phone conversations, and even text messages. A few exciting highlights include:
Ryan Stewman, CEO and Founder of Hardcore Closer and Break Free Academy, is a 4x (no, 5x!) best-selling Author, Motivational Speaker, Sales Coach, Podcast Host, Blogger and all around Entrepreneur. He’s also a regular contributor to Forbes, Entrepreneur, Addicted2Success, Good Men Project, Lighter Side of Real Estate, Huffington Post, and more. Ryan is best known for consulting with alpha personality business owners on rapidly growing their sales through the use of strong marketing and advertising. With his no B.S., ‘take action’ approach, Ryan has been able to help high income and high net worth performers make adjustments in their businesses that unleash windfall profits. In the day and age of sales trainers advertising their success by bragging about the private jets and expensive cars they’ve been able to purchase themselves, Ryan prefers to brag about the mansions and exotic cars his clients have been able to purchase through the utilization of his teachings. His programs have propelled numerous clients from 5 and 6 figure incomes to 7 figure a year earners, and he has a new group he’s working on each year in his top tier program “The Tribe.” It doesn’t matter if you are selling cars, homes, financial services or consulting, Ryan’s sales mastery can help you generate higher quality leads, increase your closing ratios, and show you how to charge premium fees for the items you sell. PASSION STATEMENT“I help Salesmen increase their profits by teaching them skills through coaching, consulting courses, etc. Many of us in sales come from a broken past or humble beginnings. I’m passionate about my work because I’m one of them. It’s my mission to help those who came up from nothing and those on the rise to break through the socioeconomic barriers that their past has put in front of them, and help them achieve their goals. I love the sales community.” Links to Mentions in This Podcast Episode:
