S2 Ep11: Season Finale: The Good Ally with Nova Reid

Saison 2 · Épisode 11

jeudi 16 septembre 2021Durée 25:51

My debut book, The Good Ally is OUT NOW via your favourite bookseller or online: https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-good-ally/nova-reid/9780008439484 In this episode it's just you and me kiddo wrapping up and reflecting on an incredible season. Going solo to share more about my author journey and barriers to author success. I also talk about healing and why courage and vulnerability are necessary to be anti-racist AND, I treat you to a little exclusive reading from my debut book The Good Ally.

The Good Ally is an urgent call to arms to become better allies - and, in turn, human beings - against racism, and provides a thoughtful approach centering collective healing to do so. It is a book for those against persistent racial injustice, hungry to expand their knowledge and understanding of systemic racism in Britain and beyond. It intricately uncovers the roots of racism and its birthplace, anti-Blackness. It is for those who not only want to be able to better recognise both subtle and overt forms of racism in action, and to examine their powerful role in it, but who want to know what to tangibly do about it. The answer often lies within.

Full of punch, humour and hope and packed with searing research and case studies – some toe-curling, some blood-boiling – The Good Ally will show you how, with knowledge, a dose of self-interrogation and a lot of courage, we can broker privilege and create powerful change.

The Good Ally is out now via your favourite bookseller or online now: https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-good-ally/nova-reid/9780008439484

S2 Ep10: Being the Change with Gina Martin

Saison 2 · Épisode 10

jeudi 9 septembre 2021Durée 01:11:14

In this episode I have the pleasure of talking to campaigner, writer and speaker, Gina Martin, who is best known for founding and running the national campaign to make upskirting illegal and changing English and Welsh law by creating the Voyeurism Act.

Gina’s first book Be The Change was published in 2019 and is a practical guide for activists starting out. Recently named one of the Evening Standard’s 1000 most influential people in London, Gina is also an ambassador for UN Women UK and advocates for regular people creating change in their communities.
Gina and I had an honest conversation about activism and what triggered her involvement leading the Upskirting Campaign which ended up changing the law. We talk about sexual assault and power, being an influencer vs and activist, anti-Blackness and the different standards that are held for white women who are campaigners and Black women and how human rights issues are deeply connected. We also talk about the impact of social media, racism in the law and most importantly the role you have and how can you impact change.     Referenced in the episode:

So here we are the final episode of season one! Inspired by Barack Obama I open up about what it's like to be an anti-racist educator, black woman, and soon-to-be author in unprecedented times like these.

I delve deep into the heaviness of reliving racist trauma I talk about how we can ALL instigate change in ourselves and others without resorting to dehumanising behaviour. And I share some deeply personal stories that came to me after watching Barack Obama delivering an incredible eulogy for activist, the late John Lewis.
In the episode I also discuss:

  • Remembering past trauma while concurrently experience it right now
  • How we can normalise racism as a way to protect ourself from trauma
  • Them-ing and us-ing and the race hierarchy we all need to be aware of and disrupt
  • Anthony Walker and Joy Gardner
  • Being vigilant of our own internalised racism and where racism shows up everywhere around us; the media, social media, and everyday life too.

S1 Ep18: The Fine Line between being an Ally and Stealing the Mic. Racism, Education & Self Forgiveness

Saison 1 · Épisode 18

mercredi 22 juillet 2020Durée 01:17:25

You can pre-order my new book, The Good Ally, in Waterstones and Amazon now.

In this episode I talk to Natalie an Educational Psychologist, mum of two and one of my anti-racism students.

Natalie and I had an incredibly raw and vulnerable conversation about her anti-racism journey and she shares her experience of being in an interracial relationship with two mixed heritage children while also working in education.

Natalie grew up in an almost exclusively white area and while she felt innately uncomfortable with the covert and sometimes overt racism she observed; she talks about how she didn't have the language to speak up until she grew up.

This is a really truthful conversation about how to become an ally beyond performative action. The boundary between speaking up and passing on the mic, tackling systemic racism in education and the joy of becoming anti-racist. Natalie generously opens up about her journey, leaning into the messiness of anti racist work and imploring her fellow white folk to do the same.

In the episode we also discuss:

- Natalie's journey into her anti-racist work & the importance of intentionality
- White privilege and how that can be weaponised against black and brown people.
- Racism and unconscious bias in education
- Natalie's thoughts on Christianity and dismantling systems of oppression

S1 Ep17: No Mud, No Lotus: Dismantling White Supremacy in Yoga and Collective Healing | Jonelle Lewis

Saison 1 · Épisode 17

mercredi 15 juillet 2020Durée 01:24:47

In this episode I talk to Jonelle Lewis, a mother and incredible yoga teacher smashing stereotypes.

Jonelle and I met at an event on International Women's Day a few years ago and have been friends ever since. She is a force of nature who doesn't mince her words and speaks truth about white supremacy in the wellness industry.

Jonelle's experience of dealing with racism in the wellness industry is such an important lesson. Despite the noise, Jonelle listened to the small voice calling her to teach, went to India to train and has been teaching yoga in person and online ever since.
We talk about her experience as a black woman with boobs and butt in yoga, how she's cultivated resilience from dealing with white supremacy, and she shares the wisdom and fire that makes her such a powerful soul.

In the episode we also discuss:
- How Jonelle was called to teach yoga
- Violence in the wellness industry
- Her experience at Howard University (which is an all black university in the U.S)
- The importance of seeing Anti-Racism work as the healing work it is
- Decolonising the wellness industry
